MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th 1977
"It's only the first day back and Slughorn is already giving me an assignment to do. This is ridiculous. Right, Reg?" Evan complains from our table at the library.
"I've already done it" Regulus shrugs, not looking up from his book.
"What?!" Evan shrieks.
Madam Pince shushes the boy in pure annoyance and he shoots her a wide smile to which she rolls her eyes at, looking back down at her desk.
"Write mine for me, Reg" Evan pleads in a quieter voice.
"No" Regulus answers simply and I snort in amusement.
"You girls are really smart-" Evan starts but Mallory puts her hand out in front of his face, cutting him off.
"Don't even go there. We're not doing your work for you" Mallory declares.
"Why not?" He whines childishly, slumping down in his seat.
"We've already got enough work to do, kiddo. We sit our N.E.W.T.s at the end of the school year" I tell the boy who glares at me.
"Seriously, Angel? Kiddo?" He scoffs and I shrug with a smile "I'm a year younger than you!"
"Rosier!" Madam Pince hisses in a scolding manor.
"Sorry!" He apologises to the pissed off woman.
An owl flies through the window and drops an envelope on the table in front of me, gaining the interest of my friends.
"Who's it from?" Mallory asks curiously as I lift it off the table and stand up.
"Probably just my mother wondering if I've settled in fine" I lie, pushing my chair in "I better get to Arithmancy before Professor Vector has a fit"
"You aren't taking Arithmancy this year, Mal?" Evan questions.
"No. All the numbers gave me a headache and Vector is an awful old witch" Mallory answers and Evan grins.
"You just wanted to spend more time with me. Didn't you, Belovna?" He teases.
"Don't make me hex you, Rosier" Mallory spits with a glare.
I let out a soft laugh as I exit the library and open the letter in my hands. There is a small photograph in the envelope of a small 4 year old girl with bright pink hair, a wide smile on her lips and a light brown teddy bear in her arms that I gifted her when she was a newborn. I pull out the letter and start reading it as I walk to class.
Dear Evangeline,
I hope the start of your seventh and last year at Hogwarts is going splendidly for you. Did you make head girl? I'd hope so, after all your hard work as a prefect for the past two years. You'd make a wonderful head girl, darling. Ted, Dora and I are rooting for you.
Talking about my lovely daughter, she has been asking for you and I thought I'd let you know as you haven't been to visit for a little while. I understand things can get very hectic during the last year at school and I can imagine things aren't all that wonderful at home right now as you're almost of age to be betrothed which comes with it's own problems in a pureblooded family, I went through the same situation after turning seventeen. Luckily, I don't believe Carina will allow your father to make a decision like marriage before you've even left school. Although, I thought you'd be pleased to know that us Tonks' are thinking of you and we miss you dearly.
Try not to stress yourself out too much, darling, as it will cause a great load of grief for your mental and physical health. Have fun with your friends and relax with all the spare time you have. I know that your N.E.W.T.s are this year, but don't worry about it too much. You're an extremely bright young lady, you'll do an outstanding job in those exams. I am sure of it.
I hope to hear back from you soon and I am sure the photograph of little Nymphadora with her 'Mr Teddy' will make you smile as much as Ted and I did.
Andromeda Tonks x
My body abruptly slams into another and the objects in my hand are sent sailing to the ground as a pair of hands grab my arms to steady me. I look up at the other person's face with a scowl but it drops when my hazel eyes meet a pair of grey that are narrowed in annoyance.
"Can you watch where you're going, Malfoy?" Sirius huffs, letting me go.
"Certainly, if it means I don't accidentally bump into your traitorous face again" I retort, crouching down to pick up my things.
I grab the envelope and the photograph before reaching out for the letter but Sirius bends down and snatches it up before I can get it.
"You still contact Andromeda?" Sirius asks in surprise, his brows raised.
"Keep your nose out of my business, Black" I sneer, snatching the letter from his hands.
"What would mummy and daddy say about their precious little princess sneaking around with a blood traitor and her half blood family?" Sirius coos in amusement and my heart drops.
"Sirius, you can't tell anyone. Keep your bloody trap shut" I warn him.
"Why, are you ashamed of being associated with my dear traitorous cousin?" Sirius questions.
"Of course not, you blithering idiot. You know what they'll do to me" I hiss at him and his facial expression softens "Best case scenario is that I'll be tortured, disowned and branded a blood traitor. Worst case scenario, they murder me and bury me in a shallow grave"
"Then why would you risk all that?" Sirius asks, his voice a little less judging as before and more curious.
"Nymphadora is my goddaughter and Andromeda is like a sister to me. I want to be a part of their lives" I answer simply and Sirius goes silent for a second his eyes falling to the photograph of the pink haired child in my hand.
"You're secret is safe with me, Malfoy. Just watch where your walking next time" The Gryffindor tells me before walking past me, his shoulder hitting mine harshly.
"Maybe you should take your own advise, Black!" I holler after him and he holds up his middle finger to me without looking back "Bloody drama queen"
I glare at his retreating figure, shoving my things into one of my large robe pockets and heading towards my next class.
"Miss Malfoy, you're late!" Professor Vector snaps at me as I enter the classroom "Care to explain why?"
"I apologise, Professor. I was helping a first year find his classroom. He was a little lost" I lie with a charming smile, turning a little to flash the woman my green prefect badge.
"Very well" She sighs with a nod "Take your seat, Miss Malfoy"
"Of course, Professor" I chirp, my head held high as I walk through the classroom of Slytherin and Ravenclaw students until I reach the last row.
Professor Vector starts talking as I sit down next to my friend Pandora, turning to her with a grin and she shakes her head at me with a smile.
"Lying is not a good habit to pick up on, Angel" The blonde girl tells me, passing me my books that she promised to bring from the dorms with her.
"First of all, thank you" I reply and she shrugs nonchalantly "Second of all, lying has helped me a lot in my 16 years of life. Sometimes a lie is easier than the truth, Dora"
"But it's still a lie, my friend. No matter how sweet the tale, the truth will come out and it's usually an uglier outcome if you've lied about it" Pandora says wisely.
"I still think you were supposed to be a Ravenclaw. You're nothing like your knucklehead brothers" I state, looking at the Lestrange girl who is writing down notes at a fast pace.
"They mean well. They're just not the brightest" Pandora counters.
"You can say that again" I snort.
