~Logan's POV~

"Easy, Lyla... Easy."

"Adamantium. The Sentinels have been remodeled with adamantium." Lyla groaned, clutching her side as Scott gently set her on the ground. "I'll heal, but it'll take some time."

"What happened to her?" Bobby asked, pushing me aside and crouched down in front of her.

"A Sentinel almost burned her alive. Part of the adamantium in her melted completely and made it to her bloodstream." Scott explained as Lyla writhed around in pain.

"I'll heal! I always do, dammit!"

"Not this time, liebchen." Erik said and my eyes widened. "The particles are too small for me to remove them from your blood... Your healing factor is weakening by trying to regenerate new cells which keep getting attacked by the adamantium."

"The fuck you mean it's weakening!?" I exclaimed.

"It means that no matter how hard I try or how fast her healing abilities are, it's not enough to save her... Her body is rejecting the adamantium after all these years."

"Don't... don't pretend to care about me while I'm on my deathbed, Logan." Lyla spat and closed her eyes for a few seconds. "You never cared."

"Moonlight, I-"

"Stop calling me that! You were alive the entire time and never searched for me! I was rotting in that cage covered in your blood for what seemed like an eternity while you were alive somewhere!" She screamed and tried to stand but fell on her knees. "This is your karma... getting to witness your only kid die right in front of you."

"You're not dying, for God's sake!" Scott protested and turned to Erik and Charles. "Tell me my wife isn't dying!"

"I'm sorry, Scott." Charles sighed. "There's nothing we can do except wait."

"Fuck waiting. I'm going out by taking down those tin cans and it'll literally be the last thing I ever fucking do." Lyla practically snarled and used her claws to stand up.

"Ravager, you're in no condition." Ororo pointed out and nudged my ribcage. "Say something to her."

"Let's get her inside and see what we can do to make her more comfortable." Bobby decided as Scott helped her walk.

"You missed your chance, Logan. All because you kept pushing her away for years." Ororo rolled her eyes before walking away and I pursed my lips, looking down at my feet. "Scott is about to be widowed and you lost the only person who tried to give you pure and unconditional love all because you kept pushing her away when she needed you."

"There was a time where Lyla would scream and cry trying to call for you, Logan." Charles said and I sighed. "She never gave up, even when you gave up on her."

"Think she'll forgive me now, Professor? I mean, she forgave Magneto."

"No... I don't think she'll ever forgive you. Especially now that it's her final moments and you're not by her side."

"I thought her mind was the only one you couldn't break?" I mused and he chuckled.

"One doesn't have to be a mind reader to know these things, Logan."

"Scott, we need to talk."

"No, we don't, Logan." He spat, removing his visor to wipe his tears. "I have nothing else to say to you. Especially now that Lyla's dying."

"That's exactly what I want to talk about." I sighed, placing a hand on his shoulder but he shoved it away.

"Once she's gone, we're done. I tried everything in my power to prove to you that I love her and all you did was shut me down and say that I'll never get your approval... The moment she takes her last breath, I'm fucking done putting up with your bullshit."

"Scott, I wanna make it right. I'm losing my little girl and-"

"Cry me a river, Wolverine."

"Scott, her body can't take it anymore." Ororo called out and we both froze. "Erik did his best and the Professor eased her mind to make her forget the pain... I think it's time to say your goodbyes."

"I'm not ready, Storm." He choked out and wiped his tears again. "I don't think I can do it."

"We'll be right there with you. The Professor's talking to Kitty to try and find a last resort, but she needs you. She's stubborn and will never admit it, but she's scared."

Scott took a deep breath and walked to the stone table Lyla was laying on and we both followed.

"I'm here, angel face. I'm right here with you."

Lyla was stripped off the top of her suit, leaving her only in a tank top and pants and was covered in sweat and blood.

"Scott..." She whispered and held his hand. "I'm sorry for being so reckless."

"Wouldn't be you if you weren't, sweetheart."

"Where's my dad? I want my dad." Lyla mumbled and Ororo immediately pushed me towards her.

"I'm here, moonlight." I said and held her other hand. "I'm not going anywhere."

"You left me alone in there... You should've come back for me."

"I know I should've, my moonlight. And I'll be dealing with the consequences until my dying day."

"Good... that's the least you deserve for the shit you put me through." Her breathing started to slow down making me grip her hand just a bit tighter.

"We may have found a way to save Ravager." Charles announced and I heard Scott let out a sigh of pure relief. "Time travel."

Scott and I both glanced at each other before turning back to Charles with a raised eyebrow.

"Professor, with all due respect, but that's the dumbest thing that's left your mouth since I met you." Scott said.

"Not the time travel you see in movies, Cyclops. Kitty can send someone's consciousness back into their younger body."

"That just might work, Charles." Erik realized.

"Still the dumbest idea I've ever heard and I married Lyla for crying out loud!"

"The Sentinel program was originally conceived by Doctor Bolivar Trask. In the early '70s, he was one of the world's leading weapons designers. But, covertly, he had begun experimenting on mutants... using their gifts to fuel his own research." Charles ignored him. "There was one mutant who had discovered what he was doing. A mutant with the ability to transform herself into anyone."

"Raven." Lyla wheezed and I gently lifted her head so she could see us. "She killed Trask after 'Nam. I remember because Havoc and I tried to stop her but we were too late. When we got to the office, Trask was dead."

"They captured her that day... tortured her, experimented on her. In her DNA, they discovered the secrets to her powers of transformation. It gave them the key they needed... to create weapons that could adapt to any mutant power. And in less than 50 years... the machines that have destroyed... so many of our kind were created. But it all started that day in 1973... the day she first killed. The day she truly became... Mystique."

"You wanna go back." Kitty realized.

"If I can get to her, stop the assassination... keep her out of their hands... then we can stop the Sentinels from ever being born. And end this war before it ever begins."

"Uh, I can send someone back a couple weeks. Maybe a month. But you're talking about going back decades. You have the most powerful brain in the world, Professor... but the mind can only stretch so far before it snaps."

"Lyla?" Scott asked and we all turned to see her with eyes still open and limp. "LYLA!"

"I... I can't hear her heartbeat." I admitted and he fell to his knees.

"No... no, no, no, no." He cried, pulling her lifeless body close to him. "I wasn't ready! I didn't say goodbye to her... I wasn't ready to let her go."

"Scott, it's-" Ororo was cut off by Scott letting out a scream and took off his visor to shoot a beam at a wall.

"I WASN'T READY, DAMMIT!" He wailed and closed his eyes.

"What if someone's mind has a way of snapping back?" I desperately asked Kitty and tried to blink back my tears. "What if someone can heal as fast as they're ripped apart?"

"It's a big risk." Kitty said, looking away when Scott started crying again.

"Yeah, I get that."

"Not just for you." Bishop added. "You do this, you change history."

"That's kinda the point."

"You're really gonna do this, Logan?"

"I have to at least try." I shrugged, holding Lyla's cold hand and Scott nodded. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry I treated you like shit for years... I just wanted what was best for my little girl."

"And in turn it made her hate you." He bitterly said, stroking her cheek. "Your apology means nothing now, Logan."

"I know."

"Like I said before, we're done. There's nothing tying me to you anymore... The only reason I took your shit was because she was your daughter and I had to at least try. But not anymore."

"Scott-"

"Go be the hero and try to give me my wife back, Wolverine. I have nothing left to say." He cut me off and I slowly stood up to walk away.

"So, I wake up in my old body, God knows where. Then what?" I asked Charles who made quick work in wiping his tears.

"You'll need to go to my house and find me. Convince me of all of this."

"Won't you be able to just read my mind?"

"I didn't have my powers in 1973." He admitted. "Logan, you're going to have to do for me what I once did for you. Lead me, guide me. I was a very different man then. You'll have to be patient with me."

"Patience isn't my strongest suit."

"And beware of your daughter. She was dealing with a lot during that time, mostly because of me."

"She stayed with you?"

"Ever since Cuba. She refused to leave my side no matter how much Erik tried."

"You'll need me too." Erik added and I raised an eyebrow. "After Mystique left Charles, she came with me... and I set her on a dangerous path. A darker path. It's going to take the two of us, side by side... at a time when we couldn't be further apart."

"Logan, you'll have one shot and one shot only." Kitty said as I laid on the table Lyla died in. "Basically, your body will go to sleep while your mind travels back in time. As long as you're back there, past and present will continue to coexist. But once you wake up, whatever you've done will take hold and become history. And for the rest of us it'll be the only history that we know. It'll be like the last fifty years never happened, in this world, in this war. The only person who will remember it is you... Alright, Logan, I need to you clear head and to stay as calm as possible."

"What do you mean?"

"If your mind gets rocky it'll be harder for me to hold you. You could start to slip between past and future."

"What if I need to get a little rocky?" I asked.

"Think peaceful thoughts... Maybe say one out loud and I'll tell you if it's enough." Kitty offered and I immediately turned to see Scott crying over Lyla's body while Ororo tries to calm him down.

"She was five years old and her mutation triggered. Instead of being scared of it, she just smiled and said 'Daddy, I'm just like you now!'... I think it was the happiest I've seen her." I said and Charles nodded with a smile. "Is that enough?"

"Yeah... that's more than enough." She smiled and placed her hands on my temples. "This is our last chance, Logan."

"You have one chance to make it right, Logan. Don't waste it." Scott said through cries and I immediately knew what he was talking about.

I'm getting my daughter back.
