Chapter 42: Second session
Peter's POV
So now I am lost in my thoughts for a few minutes waiting for Dr. Marsh in her office. Not even ten minutes later she enters the room and gently sets her papers down on her desk and plops onto her chair apologizing, "Sorry to keep you waiting Peter, co-workers seem to think it's okay to interrupt sessions."
"It's okay I don't mind waiting." I replied. It gave me more time to panic, but more time to learn to control the panic.
Her lips form into a plastered smile, "So how's your day going?"
I pause for a few moments trying to come up with a good answer when I sigh, "It's okay. I guess I don't know."
Dr. Marsh leans forward in her seat asking, "What do you mean "I don't know" are you okay?"
I pause then explain, "Honestly everyday is a struggle because it seems that people don't care if I have a life that's how I feel."
Dr. Marsh has an answer ready to go, "It's perfectly okay to feel that way Peter. No one is ever allowed to tell you how you should feel and why. I know exactly how you feel, I can relate to your situation on some level. Some people I work with seem to not care that I have a job that lets me keep a roof over mine and my son's head."
"Peter, there are two types of people in this world. There are the people that care too little, and the people that care too much. I don't know a lot about you, but I know that you care a lot about the people around you, you like to wear your heart on your sleeve, but sometimes, we just have to find a balance, even though it might sound selfish, or you simply might not want too. But doing too much, or too little can leave you vulnerable, but that is our reality."
I nodded as I listened hard to her words and understand exactly what she was implying. I've had people that either cared too much or too little, but at the same time, I'm extremely grateful for who took a step back and assess the problem, and then figure out what to do about it. Like Wanda, and MJ. They understand that sometimes, I need to figure something out myself, and then they offer their input.
But that left me with a question, "I agree with you, but then why do people have to act like they're all that and much more we're all human, why can't we all just get along?"
"That's a very good question kiddo. Some people think and act the way they've been taught. It's all about upbringing. Take Tony Stark for an example, in his earlier half of his life, he was an alcoholic person, and acted the only way he knew how to-from his father. But after a wake up call from being kidnapped, he soon learned the harsh reality. That's finding balance. Other people seem to think that they are entitled to everything and that everyone should worship the ground they walk on, and that we should feel lucky to be standing in their presence. Like Voldemort. Don't be a Voldemort, be like Tony Stark. But don't strive to be a carbon copy of someone, because then you'll lose yourself in the process."
"You're very wise Dr. Marsh." I complemented.
She kindly smiled, "Why thank you Peter. I'm just doing my job, being able to help people without becoming a superhero. It appears to be a trend, and I mean no disrespect to any of the Avengers or yourself, but people see heroes and want to be exactly like them, which isn't the problem. But I think that the world is already equipped with people, the Avengers are Earth's Mightiest Heroes for a very valid reason. I myself wouldn't be able to become something heroic such as a police officer or a firefighter."
I inquired, "Why not? There are plenty of women police officers and firefighters."
She answered, "I have severe asthma, the smoke would instantly cause an attack against my health and I'd have to go to a hospital. I also cannot shoot a gun, as excellent as my penmanship is, my aim is terrible. I've tried at a gathering, and I didn't hit the target, however, getting the bullet around it."
"That's not good." I said.
She chuckled, "No it is not. Peter I also have a question for you."
"Y-yes?"
"If you could change anything about your past what would you change and why?"
That was a pretty valid question, but I don't think I could answer it because like Mr. Bruce said, when you change the past, it molds into the future, and your present becomes your past. Time travel is not how it is in the movies.
I explained, "Well, if I changed something, it would be my future, and my present self would be the past, that's how Mr. Bruce explained time travel."
"Let me rephrase that pretend none of what you just said wouldn't do anything what would you change?" She asked.
"Well...I- I don't know because there's a lot I wish to change and if I chose I don't know how I'd live with it. What would you do?" I asked.
"I'm the therapist Peter, but I'll answer your question. A little before my son Liam was born my husband Ben and I learned we were having twins when Liam was born, with his twin Leo."
"Leo got sick a few months after we brought him home. He almost died, but now, he's okay, happy, and healthy. If I could change something, I wish I could go back and take away all of his pain from when he was sick."
"I'm glad he's okay." I said.
"Yeah, me too. But back to you, there's one thing you need to know. Don't think you have to change for the approval of others. You're a good kid Peter. and I hope one day everything will be resolved."
She continued, "Peter, do you know why you responded to my question with a science fact? Because, compare our lives. If you changed some form of pain in your life, it would change the way you are today. All the pain you've experienced in your life, is what has molded you into embracing the Avenging life. A dear friend of mine told me, with great power, comes great responsibility. Take it as a motto."
"Thanks Dr. Marsh. That's kind of funny, my father had told me the same thing."
"You're welcome Peter. Do you have any happy news to share?"
"Uh yeah. Actually in about four months it'll be a year since my girlfriend and I have been together and I was thinking of doing something special for her. Keep in mind we're not "that couple" who celebrates things like that but I thought why not."
"Aww that's sweet tell me about her."
"Well her name is Michelle or MJ and she is a girl who doesn't let you walk on her like a doormat, she'll speak the truth even if it hurts someone's feelings when she needs someone to talk to, she always comes to me and when I need to I talk to her."
"You seem to have a good relationship with her if anything gets too difficult don't push her away okay?"
"Okay." I replied.
Our session lasted two hours, and after it was time to head home. Dr. Marsh is a good person, and it must have been scary almost losing Leo, I'm glad he's okay. I wonder what it'll look when I'm a father, I hope to set a good example for my kids but that's another thought for another day.
