Everyone was inside the van when you came back. At least that's what you guessed since you couldn't see anyone around L'manburg.
You made your way around the big hole and knocked on the door when you got to the van. No one opened, so you had to open the door yourself.
For a moment, you thought your friends weren't in there - it was so quiet. But when you turned around the corner, you saw each and everyone standing in a half-circle, looking at you.
"Oh, so now you decide to show up?" Tommy glared. He was leaning against the wall, apparently still recovering. His body looked fully healed, but something in his face expression almost looked sick.
You were a little taken back. What was with his tone of voice?
"Tommy-" Tubbo spoke with a quiet voice beside him, but Tommy cut him off.
"No, Tubbo. I want to hear what (Y/n) has to say." He turned to you once again. "Why did you get here so late?"
You blinked, completely confused. "Tommy, calm down. I wasn't the one who shot you with an arrow, remember?"
"You might as well have been. We know you're on Dream's side."
You choked on air. They thought you were what?
Completely skeptical, you looked at the others in the room. Fundy was playing with his tail, and Tubbo was looking at his shoes - both avoiding eye-contact. Tommy and Wilbur were the only one's man enough to look you in the eyes. Wilbur with a sad look, and Tommy with an angry one.
You were waiting for them to burst out with laughter, saying that they got you. That it was just a stupid prank. But they didn't. They were completely serious.
You had just begun to feel like you were a part of the gang - like you were just as much a part of L'manburg as they were. But now as you stood here, being treated like you were the executioner or something, all of those feelings faded away. You felt like an outcast, an unwanted member. And you still didn't understand what the hell was happening.
"I, Tommy-" Your voice was trembling upon all of the emotions that were blossoming inside of you. Anger, sadness, confusion. "Listen I get that you're sad that you lost, but I'm not- Why would you- I'm sure we can get independence another way-"
"Oh, cut it out!" The boy yelled, standing up straight. "Do you honestly think we're that naive? We know you went to Dream on your little 'walk' earlier today. Fundy saw you!"
You looked hurt at Fundy, but the furry just kept staring guiltily at the ground.
Tommy continued. "And right after the duel ended, you stayed behind to congratulate him. We know you're on his side. You always have been, it just took us some time to realize it."
You couldn't believe it. You couldn't believe them. It was nothing more but an hour ago you all had walked down to where Tommy and Dream would have their duel - and everything had seemed to be completely fine there. Sure, there had been a lot of tension, but you figured that had been because of the duel. And now they suddenly thought you were on Dreams side and had been so the whole time? Were they being serious?
You, who had backed yourself up against the door, stepped an angry step forward. Your heart was beating loudly in your chest, and it felt like your veins were threatening to pop out. "Do you seriously think that after everything I've done for you guys, saving you several times, risking my life for the sake of L'manburg, that I would side with the enemy!? That's ridiculous! Do you even hear yourself, Tommy? I know Eret scarred you guys after being a traitor all along, but that doesn't mean you have the right to put me under suspicion. I put everything aside to help you!"
"Oh please," Tommy said, stepping forward as well. He was just as angry as you, but you could easily see the hurt in his eyes. "Do you think, we believe it's a coincidence that one of Dream's conditions back then, in order for him not attacking us, was to hand you over? Or that you were the only one who wasn't killed in the final control room? That you didn't seem surprised at all when I died just now? Or maybe the fact that you're standing right here in front of all of us, with a loadstone compass in your hands?!"
Off guard, you looked down at the heavy object in your hands. You looked up again at Tommy ready to explain, but you could see in his eyes that it would be no use. He already viewed you as a traitor. And so did the rest of them. The people you, even after only two weeks, trusted with your life. The ones you had tried to fight the enemy alongside with for so long...
And now they suddenly thought the enemy was you.
You got that they were skeptical. After all, you didn't know why Dream was so interested in you either. You understood, that they had just lost all possible hope for L'manburg's future, and you well aware that they had just been betrayed by one of their own. But despite you knowing all of that, it didn't make the situation hurt any less.
"Did you make a deal with Dream, (Y/n)? behind our backs?" Wilbur asked quietly but calmly. He gestured to the compass in your hand. "That if you secretly helped him, he would give you the compass?"
"What-" You were completely out of breath. "No! I would never! I don't even know why he gave me this compass, I swear! I spoke to Dream yesterday because I wanted to protect you guys! I made a deal with him and-"
"Don't." Tommy just said. His anger had faded away, only sadness left in his eyes. "If you won't tell us the truth, then just... Don't."
"We trusted you, (Y/n)." Wilbur sighed. Fundy made his way around you, and opened the door to the van, gesturing for you to get out.
You took a faltering step back. "But- But you still can, I-"
As much as you hated it, tears welled up in your eyes. You were being thrown out of the place that had just become your home. They thought you had betrayed them. "I-I can't believe you guys. I gave up everything to fight alongside you, and- and you- but-"
You didn't know what to say. Was this really happening? Were they seriously kicking you out? How could you convince them that they were wrong?
As you backed out of the van, you suddenly remembered Dream's words. "I know that Wilbur has said many things about me and my friends, but remember, you only know their side of the story"
You got a weird taste in your mouth. None of this made any sense. None of it. You weren't sure of anything anymore. You felt like you didn't know anything.
But one fact still stood clear in your mind; You had given up the search of your old friend, for these guys... To help them in a war they couldn't win. You had shared your stuff with them, shared your knowledge, shared your time. You had taught Tommy and Tubbo every possible survival trick you could think of. You had put your life on the line to protect them, and protect what they stood for.
And this- this was how they repaid you.
You weren't mad. After all, as you said before, you could see where they were coming from. All you were, was disappointed. And hurt beyond relief.
You had been alone for so long. And you had finally found these guys, who you genuinely enjoyed being around. And now you were about to be on your own again.
"You're wrong, I'm not- you're making a mistake." You whispered, but they didn't listen. They had made up their minds, and you had absolutely nothing to prove them wrong with.
You got pushed out of the van and stumbled onto the grass. For a quick moment you thought you were about to faint, but it was just your mind playing you a trick.
"You know what?" You spoke with a voice you didn't even recognize. You looked up at the four boys, who were now all staring at you. Wilbur looked determined but hurt. Tommy was busy convincing himself that this was the right thing to do. Tubbo and Fundy just stared at you with tears in their eyes.
You wanted to say that they were doing something they'd regret. That they were being stupid and misjudging. Or that they were all dickheads.
But even after all of this, you genuinely cared for every single one of them. And if this was truly the last time you spoke to them, you'd want your last words to be something you truly meant.
"I hope you'll get your independence."
Being stubborn, hurt and angry, you turned around and walked out of L'manburg. The place you've grown to love more than life itself. Your heart was aching and your eyes were watering.
All of this - for practically nothing.
"Yeah, run away (Y/n)! Run to Dream, he'll comfort you!" Tommy yelled behind you, hurt in his voice. "You were never really a part of L'manburg anyways!"
You felt your heart sting from his words. He's just sad, you told yourself. He's just confused.
Your hands were shaking. You wanted to run back and do something more to convince them. But your stubborn ass didn't even look back. You just continued walking, hoping that they would suddenly shout your name, begging you to come back.
But they didn't.
So then... What were you going to do now? You could do the typical villain move, and go join Dream's side, to give your friends a lesson - but you weren't like that. There was no way you'd sink that low.
The compass felt weirdly heavy in your hand. You looked at it, the magnetic needle pointing into the darkness in front of you. 'An old friend' Dream had said.
There was no way Dream had meant your old friend. After all, he didn't even know the guy, so how would he be able to make a compass that pointed right towards him?...
Maybe it pointed towards something else. Someone else.
Well, you didn't have anything else to do. No where else to go. And if there was even the slightest chance...
It could be a trap. Set up by Dream himself. The magnetic needle could point you right towards your death.
But there wasn't anything left here that prevented you from taking the chance.
And so, you took it.
With a determined gaze, you started heading in the needle's direction, and away from L'manburg - leaving the hope of a new life with your friends behind in the process.
And as you walked through the night, as you had done so many times before, Dream's words echoed in your unconsciousness. The words he had said, after giving you the compass.
"I have a feeling you might be needing it soon."
