Chapter 4

James POV

I woke up at the crack of dawn as usual. I looked around confused. I was unfamiliar with the white canopy sheets around me. The eiderdowns looked too posh to be in the boys dormitory. Then it all struck me. I was Head Boy along with Lily Evans! And I was in the Head Boy dormitory. Following my morning schedule, I went down to the grounds for a run as I usually do. After one and a half hour of exercise I went back to the Heads common room. a

I put my ear against the door of Lily's room only to hear soft snores. I remembered that she was not a morning person. I went to the bathroom to take a shower and came out all ready for the day in fifteen minutes. I saw a very grumpy looking Lily sitting on an armchair waiting for me to free the bathroom.

"'Morning Lily!" I said cheerfully.

"'Morning James. Is the bathroom free?" She still had a sleepy voice.

"Yeah. Go get ready." I said and she went to the bathroom. Thirty minutes later she emerged from the bathroom totally ready. Ah, my precious Lily. The one girl who had enough of me to break my heart every time she refused my proposal for Hogsmeade dates. That gorgeous face I had fallen in love with. She looked so beautiful. She was wearing the school uniform and had her hair tied back in a loose ponytail. Now we were friends and I was closer to her than I had ever been. It felt great.

"James, you waited for me?" She said incredulously, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Of course, I did! Couldn't leave for breakfast without my friend." I grinned and she slapped my arm playfully.

"Alright then. Let's go or we'll be late for breakfast." We picked up out bags, walked through the portrait hole and downstairs to the Great Hall. Our friends stared at us suspiciously as we sat with them to eat.

"Where were you both?" I heard Marlene whisper-yell at Lily.

"Just in the Head common room. He waited for me to get ready so we could come down to the Great Hall together." She explained to Marlene who was still looking at her suspiciously. I had had enough of the conversation so I turned my attention back to my fellow marauders.

"So, did you both snog?" Padfoot asked me, smirking. I shook my head, blushing and was able to give only so much as a reply before Minnie came to us to give out the timetables.

1st: Defense against the Dark Arts

2nd: Transfiguration

3rd: History of Magic

Lunch

4th: Divination

Free

5th: Potions

I peeked over my friends' timetables. Padfoot, Marlene, Alice, Frank and I had all the same classes. Lily and Moony had Ancient Runes instead of Divination. Peter and Mary had Care of Magical Creatures instead of Potions. We quickly finished breakfast and hurried off to Defense against the Dark Arts.

Professor Adams was already in the classroom when we entered. As soon as we were settled, he started talking about the importance of NEWTs and then started explaining about werewolves. I saw Moony and Padfoot doze off just before I did. We woke up just in time to make it to Transfiguration.

"Mr. Potter, Mr. Black, I am glad that you both could join us" Minnie said sternly.

"Ah! We won't miss it for the world, Minnie." I replied jokingly. McGonagall rolled her eyes and gestured us to take our seats. She explained about NEWTs just like Professor Adams, only in a more detailed manner which took the whole class. As the bell rang, we headed off to History of Magic. Everyone had taken their seats when Professor Binns arrived and told us that he had selected out partners with whom we would be working with for the rest of the year. There was a collective groan throughout the classroom.

As he flicked his wand a list of pairs came on the board. I was delighted to see that I was paired with Lily. We went over to sit with our partners. Unlike the other teachers, Professor Binns did not talk about the NEWTs. Instead he droned on and on like he usually did. I got bored out of my skull. I looked around the class to see Lily and Moony scribbling furiously on a paper, probably taking notes.

"Why aren't you taking any notes?" Lily asked not taking eyes of her notes.

"I will borrow them from Moony later." I replied casually and dozed off. The last thing I remembered was Lily rolling her eyes at me, only pretending to be annoyed. I thought I saw a hint of fondness in her eyes, but quickly dismissed it as my eyes being influenced by drowsiness.

I woke up to the sound of Padfoot yelling the most annoying song in my ear. I would have woken up on hearing that song alone, even if it was not complimented by his off-key and horrible voice.

"SIRIUS ORION BLACK!" I yelled. "Why the hell did you do that?"

"Merlin, Prongs! Is that a way to say 'Good Morning'? Now, a 'thank you Sirius' would suffice."

"Go to hell Padfoot!" I packed up my stuff and headed for lunch. The rest of the classes also covered an explanation about NEWTs. I was so exhausted that I went to bed for a small afternoon nap so that I would be well rested for the start of year party in the Gryffindor common room which the marauders held every year.
