Chapter 2
ย Lily went over to the barrier between platform 9 and 10 and after double checking if any muggles were watching, she went through the barrier to platform 9 ยพ.
Lily's POV
The scarlet steam engine glowed, students including nervous first years were boarding the train after kissing their parents' goodbye. The platform was as welcoming as ever. It always surprised me. I snapped my eyes shut, blocking out the buzz of chatter and the hooting owls as I let it all sink in. This was my last year at Hogwarts and the very last time I will be boarding the Hogwarts Express. This will be the end of my childhood and the beginning of a brand-new chapter. Then I, and everyone else will be thrown out into the reality and let me tell you something, the real world is a terrifying place. Although the parents showed that they were happy, I knew they were worried for their kids because of the war. I sighed and opened my eyes, absorbed the surroundings and started looking for my friends.
"Lily!" A familiar voice cried. I turned back to see my three best friends- Alice Fortescue, Marlene McKinnon and Mary MacDonald- grinning widely at me. I met Ali, Marly and Mary on my first day on the train. We had been best friends ever since. We all were sorted in Gryffindor and shared a dorm which made us even closer.
I smiled and ran towards them. They wrapped me in a bone crushing hug. I loved it so so much. I hadn't seen these pretty angels in too long.
Marly had long, slender legs and very thick bouncy curls of dirty blond hair that hung halfway down her back. She is a halfblood and her light hazel eyes that were specked with light green shone bright with a sparkle of mischief whenever she smiled. She was a player of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. We were complete opposites which was why she was my absolute best friend on the entire earth.
Ali was the shortest with shoulder length straight blonde hair. Her bright blue eyes danced in the sunlight. Her blood pure as can be. She had a kind round face that shone with compassion. She was rather shy in comparison to Marls and was easily the most empathic out of us four. Despite her introverted nature, if you knew her well, she was a crackhead. I completely admired the love in her heart and her hopelessness to only see the good in people.
Mary was medium height and was a muggle- born. She has sterling grey eyes. She is of African descent with her coffee brown skin, the most stunning tone. Her natural jet-black hair collected in wild untamable curls around her face. Her and Marly, the clowns of the group. Honestly, they could keep everyone alive just by being in the same room. They always found something stupid to say no matter what the situation was.
We went to find a compartment while exchanging news about our summer holidays and discussing about me getting Head Girl. We found an empty compartment near the end of the train.
"Sorry girls. I have to go. Being the Head Girl, I have to lead the prefects' meeting." I said as soon as we had changed into our robes.
"It's ok Lil. We know that you have more responsibilities. Have fun." Said Ali.
"Sure will." I replied giving them a smile but what I did not know was how wrong I was.
I went to the prefects' compartment brimming with excitement, eager to see the Head Boy. I hoped that it was Remus Lupin, my fellow prefect but I would collapse if it was Snivelly. I entered the empty prefects' compartment and sat down near the window. I was deciding what to tell to the prefects' when the compartment door slid open revealing the one and only James Potter. I was surprised to see him there. Slowly I started getting angry thinking that he had come to prank me or ask me out. Potter had always found a way to ask me out or annoy me.
I got up and said, "What are you doing here, Potter? This is the prefects' compartment and only prefects' and Head Students are allowed to come here."
"I know Evans. That is why I am here." He said giving me a crooked smile. He was starting to annoy me with every passing second.
"So, what are you doing here?" I spat. I saw a bit of hurt in his eyes but it was gone as soon as it had come. He shuffled on his feet.
"I am Head Boy, Lily." He said politely. What?! Head Boy?! You have got to be kidding me, Albus. And how come Potter was being polite?
I laughed and said, "Don't prank me Potter." When he didn't reply, I looked up at his face and realized. Geez! He was being serious. I stopped laughing immediately. Shit!
"Oh God! You are not pranking. You are being serious?!" I stuttered.
"Yes, I am." He replied not meeting my gaze.
I opened my mouth several times to say something but closed it.
"Merlin's pants....... Please tell me that you are not actually Head Boy, are you Potter?" I eventually managed to blurt out, my words coming out slightly strangled. He merely shrugged in reply, a tinge of pink greeting his tanned cheeks. Hmm, that's something I have never seen before. He flicked the badge on his chest in confirmation, his actions making me wince.
"Badge and everything." He said weakly, with a pathetic attempt at what he must have thought was a reassuring smile.
"How in the name of Merlin did you get Head Boy? You weren't even a bloody prefect." I said. I could feel the contortion of my face and didn't bother to relax it. A role, let alone Head Boy? Oh my God....... I have to work with him. This was going to ruin my entire year.
"Believe it or not, even I was surprised when I got the letter. Honestly, I think that Dumbledore is losing his marbles." He laughed trying to lighten the mood. ''I mean for Christ's sake; how could you ever get a leadership role.'' I cried indignantly, doing my best to reflect on any occasion where Potter has shown leadership.
''You? Potter, the bullying, arrogant.... Good Godric, what on earth was Dumbledore thinking? Making Potter Head boy? Spending the year together, what am I going to do-oh my, -'' I pressed my fingers to the bridge of my nose.
'I don't like this any more than you do, trust me.'' Potter said. ''I'm sorry that you're stuck with my arrogant arse.'' He continued hotly, glaring at me. ''But there's nothing I can do about it, ok? I was given the position, and I gladly step up to the plate and try my best to set an example, but you being bitchy about it isn't going to resolve anything. Please can we just... get on with it?'' He finished weakly, closing his eyes. '' For once.''
Aghast, I suppose I had been a little too dramatic and rude. I realized and apologized immediately.
Just a few minutes later the prefects' started flooding in the compartment. Potter and I had decided that being Head Girl and Boy we will patrol together and the prefects' from the same houses will patrol together. As the prefects' settled down I got ready to give instructions.
"Good morning everyone. I am Lily Evans and I will be the Head Girl for this year." I spoke with confidence.
"And I am James Potter and I will be Head Boy." There were gasps throughout the compartment when they heard this. It was only Remus and I who were not surprised because we already knew.
"A blood-traitor and a mudblood as Heads! What has the school come to." I heard Nancy Parkinson mutter under her breath. I had to hold Potter to stop him from lunging onto Parkinson.
"Well, Parkinson sorry for being Heads but Dumbledore trusts us more. I guess you will have to bear us for the rest of the year." Potter said coolly.
"I think we should start with the meeting if you are done calling us foul names, Parkinson." I said but didn't wait for a reply. "So, for today we will only be giving out the schedules for patrols and explaining the rules. So, we have decided to let the people of the same house patrol. So, it is Remus Lupin and Jennifer Lawrence for Gryffindor, Amos Diggory and Jessica Biel for Hufflepuff, Severus Snape and Nancy Parkinson for Slytherin and William Patil and Catherine Davis for Ravenclaw. Everybody happy?"
Severus looked far from happy. "And who are you doing patrols with?" he sneered. "Being Head Girl I have to do them with the Head Boy which happens to be James." I said smiling. "Everybody else happy?" Everyone nodded. Then we proceeded with rules Potter adding few things occasionally. Finally, we were done and the perfects' went out leaving only James and I were left.
"You called me James! You called me James!" Potter cheered. It took me a second to realize that I had indeed called him James. "I suppose." I said without meeting his eyes.
"Well, Lily, as we will be working together this year, can we try and be friends for once?" He asked nervously looking at his feet. Well, he has been polite all this time and looks like he has changed. Maybe we could give it a shot.
"Ok, Potter. I think we can give it a shot" I replied after thinking for a moment. He looked up at me, his eyes gleaming and giving me a dazzling smile.
"That's great!" I smiled and was about to leave the compartment that he asked, "And now that we are friends, can we come to first- name basis?"
"Sure, James." I smiled and left the compartment leaving a grinning James behind me.
.....
I went to my friends in our compartment. I told them all about the prefects' meeting and their jaws hit the floor when I told them that James was head boy and that we had decided to be friends. There was a clatter of money and I saw Marls give two galleons to Mary.
"Marls, why did you hand her money?" I asked. "We bet that you and James will become friends this year." Mary grinned. I shook my head at them, bemused. We spent the rest of the journey talking and playing. As the train stopped at the Hogsmeade station and filled out.
I was back where I belonged.
