Whispers in Golden Curls

As a child, her golden curls brought her recognition from relatives, friends, strangers. Fingering her locks, they would tell her how sweet she was. They would say how she would grow up pretty, for that's all that really mattered. They talked freely in front of her, not bothering to whisper.

As a young girl, her sunny hair, too heavy now for curls, hung in curtains on either side of her head, protecting her from the stares of the other children as she read instead of played. It tried to block her ears, to stop the whispers from reaching her. For a while it did.

As a girl, her light locks brought determination. Determination to show that she was worth more than what the magazines said. Determination to prove the mockers wrong when she signed up for math club. Determination to turn a deaf ear to the whispers when she raised her hand in class, saying to herself that time would prove them wrong.

As a young woman, her soft, simple hair was her coach, making her to stand out when she wanted to hide in the shadows. It was her hiding place, giving her a place to rest from the eyes of the world when she had had enough of their ideals of what she should be. Balancing out what she thought was wrong with herself with what she thought she knew to be right. Balancing out the whispers.

Now, her hair is for her.
Not for the grown-ups who called her pretty as a child. Not for the children who whispered about her on the playground. Not for the boys who thought they owned the math club. Not for the girls who thought she was strange because of her appearance. Not for the whispers.

Her hair is for her. And her hair whispers in her ear, We did it.

A/N
I'm writing this story from a prompt I saw. There was a competition, sponsored by the hair product company Aussie, to tell a story about how hair is important (or something. I don't really know.) Unfortunately, only Canadians can enter. I thought it was a cute idea, though, so I'm writing one anyway.
Let me know what you thought of it, and if you liked it vote and tell your friends!
❤️
