The entire time that Andrea had waited for Nancy to finish talking to the police, she felt guilty. She was more of the reason for these deaths than Eddie Munson was. Than anyone was and it was truly eating her up inside.
And the creature knew that it was. That is why he was doing it this way. Andrea had been through her fair share of deaths in the Lab and by fair share? The moment when everyone died. It wasn't one by one, it was unanimous. The only survivors are Andrea and Eleven herself.
Those were the only two numbers left.
Andrea blamed herself every day for what had happened because she had played a role in the demise of the experiments. Dr. Brenner never let her forget that even after she played the role of his stupid toy, the role of a respectable lab experiment that was the act that got her free.
The act that gave her freedom.
Andrea sat at the picnic table with the others.
Now was the time that they needed to explain everything to Nancy and rather listen to her explanation. She could tell them about the events that led up to the death of who they know learned was Fred Benson.
But first of all, they needed to explain to Nancy what the hell had been killing the teenagers of Hawkins, Indiana this go around.
"It's back again," was Max's cut to the chase explanation.
"What do you mean it's back again?" Nancy immediately grew skeptical, "They closed the gate."
"We did multiple times and it kept coming back," Andrea added as she rubbed her head, "But this time... the gate isn't open for this. It's something different."
The confusion that filled the air upon Andrea's words to Nancy was deadly, "It's never worked like that before."
"That's because this time... the force? It's evil... someone that doesn't lose," Dustin began to explain as he looked at Nancy, "Vecna."
"Vecna?" Nancy questioned as if that was the stupidest thing she had ever heard.
"He's a dark wizard. What's happening to everyone... to Chrissy, to Fred, it's all a spell," Dustin began to explain to the Wheeler woman.
"Spell?" Nancy questioned, "Like wizards?"
"Precisely," Dustin nodded his head.
"It's a long story," Steve waved his hand as he leaned against Andrea's shoulders.
"Very long story," Robin then added in agreement.
"But we know that this thing is killing people," Max looked at Nancy with a stern look, "It's killing them brutally as shit and we need to stop it."
"Eddie didn't do it," Andrea gave Nancy a firm look, "I know this thing is real. It isn't something that is going to stop."
"You're saying that this thing that killed Fred and Chrissy," Nancy clearly did not believe this story, "It's from the Upside Down?" She questioned slowly as she attempted to wrap her head around it.
"If the shoe fits," Steve remarked as he looked between everyone at the table.
"Our working theory is that he attacks with a spell," Dustin began to explain as he sighed, making a face as the sun began to set in their eyes, "Or a curse. Now, whether or not he's doing the bidding of the Mind Flayer or just loves killing teens, we don't know."
The wind began to blow softly against the area around the group mixed with teenagers and young adults. Andrea began to tap her fingers periodically against the wood of the picnic table, causing Steve to rub her shoulders softly.
"All we know is this is something different," Max began to explain as she looked down, the whisps of her red hair being moved by the wind, her blue and yellow pullover seeming more vibrant in the shade, "Something new."
"Doesn't make sense," Nancy shut the group down as she looked down.
"It's only a theory we've come up with. For the most part, we know its true through Andrea," Dustin explained as he tried to get it through to Nancy.
Nancy looked up from the table as she began to look at Dustin, "No, Fred and Chrissy don't make sense. I mean, why them?"
"Maybe they were just in the wrong place," Dustin tried to come up with some sort of theory on that part.
Andrea shook her head as she thought it through. Why had Fred and Chrissy been chosen? Was it the random luck of a draw? Or was this creature trying to send out some sort of sign... one they'd have to cipher.
"They were both at the game," Dustin began to explain making Andrea shake her head.
"Everyone was at the game, Dustin, this all started before that... before the game," Andrea looked worried as she moved her hands back to hold onto Steve's which rested on her shoulders.
"And near the trailer park," Max was quick to add as she listened to Dustin's explination.
Andrea leaned her head up as she looked at Steve, worry evident on both of their features before Steve slowly said, "We're at the trailer park...Uh, should we maybe not be here?"
Everyone fell into a silence as they began to look around. Andrea's grip on Steve's hands tightened as the wind seemed to pick up around the area. The small coos of the birds being the only other thing that reached their ears.
"There is something about this place..." Nancy began to speak as everyone gazed out.
Nancy was right. There was something off about this place. Andrea could feel it deep down. Something was very wrong around the area, she knew that whatever it was... was close. Andrea let out a shaky breath.
"Fred started acting weird the second we got here," Nancy began to explain as she looked back at the group.
"Acting weird as in...?" Robin began to question as she looked at Nancy, the wind blowing through her hair.
"Scared," Nancy began to explain as she thought back on her final moments with Fred, "On edge..."
Andrea's eyes fell on one of the trailers. Something about it felt alluring... something she did not want to feel while in this area.
"Upset," Nancy continued to explain causing everyone to slowly look over at Andrea.
"Max said Chrissy was upset too," Dustin was quick to realize as he leaned forward a bit more.
Max was quick to add to that statement, "Yeah, but not here," She shot at Dustin as she shook her head, "She was crying in the bathroom at school."
Andrea felt a shiver run down her spine causing her to shake momentarily, Robin took the time to speak, "Serial killers stalk their prey before they strike, right?" Robin questioned as she placed that idea on the table.
"He's taunting," Andrea whispered as she shook her head rapidly, "That's what he's doing. He's making them scared."
"So, maybe Fred and Chrissy saw this Vecman-" Robin was cut off by Dustin.
"Vecna," Dustin was quick to correct Robin as he gave her a look.
Steve leaned further into Andrea as he spoke, "I don't know about you guys but if I saw some freaky wizard monster, I would mention it to someone."
"Maybe they did," Max made a face as she spoke, looking up to face the rest of the group, "I saw Chrissy leaving Ms. Kelley's office. If you saw a monster, you... you wouldn't go to the police. They'd never believe you," Max began to explain before pausing, "But you might go to your-"
"Your shrink," Robin took over as she looked over at the younger girl.
Max gave a nod striking up a more thorough talk of this conversation. If they talked to their shrink and it happened to be the school counselor, there would be records of it.
"Guys," Andrea spoke causing everyone to stop talking, "If they talked to a counselor at school then there would be records. We could go in there and look through the files."
"We'd need a key," Max spoke before stopping seeing the look on Andrea's face, "This thing is messing with you too much for you to be relied on."
"I can handle it, Max. I'm not a child," Andrea shot getting a bit aggravated.
Max gave Andrea a firm look, "You may not be a child but you are on the track to being this thing's final victim."
Andrea let out a scoff as she got out of the seat, "That's the thing, Max. It's not going to kill me - look back on what we know from the Mind Flayer, it was made for Eleven. God the number of times it told me I'm going to watch everyone die and still stand... you don't fucking get it, do you?"
"I watched my brother die," Max responded as she looked at Andrea, "I can assume how it is."
"Then stop babying me," Andrea looked at Max while everyone else looked startled, "I can handle my own shit. I don't need you making it seem like I can't."
"Wait, so, Andrea... you're seeing this thing?" Nancy questioned as she seemed shocked by this statement, "Is that what has been bothering you."
Andrea felt like an explosive at the moment and in all honesty, she wasn't sure how she went from really anxious to this, "Ding, ding, ding. Seems Velma finally realized something," She accidentally said before she covered her mouth, "Jesus, Nancy I'm sorry."
Nancy shook her head at Andrea, "Don't worry about it, you are worried and it seems like this place is really... really doing something to us."
"Let's go get that key, okay?" Robin looked at Andrea trying to offer up something to get them out of this trailer park.
And so everyone left. Everyone walked over to the cars and Nancy continued to walk off, Andrea made a motion at Steve for him to see what was going on and he did.
"Whoa, whoa? Nance, Nance. Where are you going?" Steve questioned as he began to jog down, not wanting to piss off Andrea anymore.
"Oh, there's something I wanna check on first," Nancy began to explain as she continued to walk backward while Andrea got into the car.
"Something you maybe wanna share with us?" Dustin retorted as he held his arms out while watching the other woman.
Nancy looked at the ground as she held her hands in her pockets before she stated, "I don't wanna waste your time. It's a real shot in the dark."
"Yeah, okay. Are you out of your mind?" Steve retorted as he looked over at the Wheeler woman, "Flying solo with Vecna creep on the loose? No, it's too dangerous. You need... You need someone to..." Steve nearly gave up talking but turned and saw the look Andrea had through his car window.
As pissed off as Andrea may have been at Nancy, she'd be damned if she let Nancy be the next one to end up dead. Andrea really did not like the idea of the groups splitting up but it seemed that was what was happening.
Andrea got back out of Steve's car before saying, "I'll go with her."
Steve turned around and tossed his keys back to the others upon hearing Andrea's words, "Here. I'll stick with them. You guys take the car, check out the shrink."
"I don't think you want me driving your car," Robin explained with a look as she pointed back to Steve's car.
"Why?" Steve turned back around and questioned while Andrea stopped at Nancy's side.
"I don't have a license," Robin stated the obvious as she made a face at Steve.
"Why don't you have a license?" Steve then questioned as he made a face.
Andrea pinched the bridge of her nose, "Neither do I, Steve."
"I'm poor," Robin responded as she made a face at Steve.
"I can drive," Max spoke, her voice seeming a bit too happy.
"No! No, never again. Please," The look on Steve's face was priceless as he spoke, pointing back at Max, "Anybody but you. No."
"Andrea told me to drive," Max let out a small huff under her breath as she rolled her eyes at the Harrington man.
Dustin made a face as he shrugged his shoulders causing an immediate reaction from Steve, "No chance."
"Come on," Dustin begged as before he sighed watching Steve's movements.
"No," Steve continued to shut that down.
"Alright, okay. This is stupid," Robin took something out of Dustin's book bag before walking over to the two females.
"Girls trip?" Andrea questioned.
"Girls trip," Robin agreed as she handed Steve back his keys before walking back down as she spoke, "Us ladies will stick together. Unless you think we need you to protect us," The look on the three girls' faces were smirks of pride.
Andrea watched Steve's expression before the three began to leave, "Be safe!" Andrea pointed as she began to walk backward, "Remember I love you all!"
"Be careful!" Steve yelled back in return.
Andrea continued to get into Nancy's car as she slid into the backseat. A small silence fell over the trio. Andrea didn't plan on saying anything after they had pulled out of the trailer park, she'd figure out where they were going eventually.
But it seemed Nancy had other plans.
"Andrea," Nancy was careful with how she spoke, clearly not wanting to piss off the girl any more than she was, "Why didn't you say anything?"
"What was there to say?" Andrea questioned as she leaned against the door of Nancy's car as she watched the world beside her pass, "It started out as dreams. Me being back in the Lab with everyone who was there when I was little. Things slowly got darker and darker until it changed."
The two women in the front looked at each other before Robin asked, "What do you mean it changed?"
Andrea let out a sigh as she rested her head against the coolness of the window, "You know what happened. I started to buzz out in a way with it. It was like I was daydreaming but I was actually there. I could hear everything happening in the world around me but I was trapped."
Trapped. She had been trapped.
She had been held hostage by the memories that plagued her mind. The memories that had changed the entire path of her life. The memories... the memories that had changed number Seven.
She never wanted to revisit the memories and she never wanted to revisit what had happened. All together, it was one of Andrea's biggest mistakes that she had ever made.
"Andrea?" Nancy was being softer with Andrea, acting as if she were porcelain.
"What?" Andrea asked as she watched the greenery pass.
Despite everything being in a blur as they passed, she managed to pick up on some of the beauty of the earth. Seeing wild flowers that leaned away from the road in all of their colorfulness. The trees that stood so tall that they nearly covered the sky.
The sky which shined so brightly despite the array of clouds that moved around in the area. For all of the bad that was happening, the area still remained beautiful.
"What memory does it keep bringing up?" Nancy asked the question that had been struck in everyone's minds since they had found it merely hours ago about this.
Andrea paused. Her eyes moving back and forth rapidly as they tried to keep up with the moving greenery that resided outside the vehicle on the roadside. What do I say?
Andrea was not about to tell them the story. She wasn't going to give them the exact memory of what had happened. Maybe, just maybe, she could explain it to them as she had to Steve and Dustin the night prior.
Oh, but she couldn't. Robin and Nancy were the type of people to ask questions. The type of people to get to the bottom of something they realized wasn't right. If she gave them that story, they'd pry more and more until they found some sort of answer... some sort of explanation for what Andrea's memory was.
Even if it had not come from Andrea herself.
"Andrea?" Robin questioned, trying to regain the woman's attention.
"I'm thinking," was Andrea's simple response.
Nancy looked at her through the mirror, "Thinking about what? The memory?"
Andrea debated on how she should answer that question, deciding it would be best to give a soft nod of her head.
"What about it?" Nancy continued to pry, not yet going back to the previous question of what the memory actually was.
"Why it had to happen."
And that is where Andrea left the conversation. Ignoring the rest of the words spoken to her by both of the women. Ignoring the questions that they had tried to ask her. Ignoring whatever the two women wanted to know about the infamous memory that brought Andrea into a fit of tears just reliving it.
And so, halfway through the car ride, they had finally given up on getting an answer from the girl.
But that didn't mean that it wasn't Andrea's time to pry.
"So, what were you and little Fred Benson doing at the crime scene last night, anyway?" Andrea questioned as she moved to lay down in the backseat.
Nancy peered over at Robin before answering, "We we're looking into it so we could write a new feature for the newspaper. We figured that the town wouldn't be looking at the major win of the tournament."
Andrea let out a scoff.
"What?" Nancy questioned as she raised an eyebrow.
"You we're going to write about the death of Chrissy Cunningham for some stupid feature in the newspaper? That's sick," Andrea absolutely despised the idea, "This is why I didn't follow after you."
Nancy's blood began to boil at that comment, "The article would've shed light into the town. You didn't follow me because you didn't have the guts to do something that wasn't being in the public eye, Henderson."
"Guys, can we please not fight," Robin found herself uncomfortable in the middle of this situation.
"I decided why not embrace the stares that I oh so hated," Andrea sneered at Nancy, "I wasn't waiting for a damn letter from Jonathan, I actually made a life for myself meanwhile your life was handed to you."
"Andrea!" Robin was trying to get this to end so that they could focus on the task at hand.
"How dare you!" Nancy exclaimed before she whipped into the parking lot of Hawkins library, "Least I wasn't chasing after Steve."
Andrea let out a laugh as she sat herself up, "Don't lie to yourself, Nancy. I can see the way you look at him. Unlike you, I'm not worried about seeing how he is with other women. Let alone you."
And Andrea knew that irked Nancy a little too much for her enjoyment.
