xxv
Andrea had sat on her bed for an hour or two as one of her records played. Her foot tapped against her mattress as she fiddled with a piece of paper in her hand, folding it in various directions as she concentrated on folding it correctly.
Andrea had around an hour, give or take a few, before she needed to be back at the High School and ready to cheer for the game. The game that Andrea was debating on sabotaging out of spite for Jason Carver.
Andrea had pushed the events of earlier off, not wanting to think anything of them. They were merely... daydreams. Well, the nightmare version of a daydream. She shrugged it off deciding that it was simply a trick played by her mind because the past wanted to come back to her.
How wrong yet right she would be...
Andrea finished folding the paper ring and rose from her bed, walking to grab a piece of tape from her vanity before sitting back down on her mattress as she taped the two folds of the ring together before having a small smile.
"Annie!" Mrs. Henderson's voice caught her ears, "Lucas is here to see you!"
Lucas? Andrea was confused as to why Lucas was coming to see her but she shrugged it off. The two hadn't actually been around each other outside of school since the summer. Lucas started pulling away from everyone in High School, trying to rise to the charts.
"Send him back!" Andrea yelled as she pushed a few things under her bed before placing the paper ring on her nightstand.
Andrea sat staring at her door as she waited for Lucas to enter. Though, she heard him pause for a few moments before he turned her doorknob and entered after knocking. Andrea tilted her head as she stared at him.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready for your basketball game?" Andrea questioned as her eyes narrowed, "I'm pretty sure the boys went out to eat."
"I wanted to talk to you," was Lucas' response as he stood awkwardly in her doorway.
Andrea sucked in a breath before sighing, "If it is about what I think it is then I don't want to talk about it. I just spooked myself."
"You spooked yourself? Andrea, since when do you spook yourself so bad that you use your abilities?" Lucas questioned as he walked further into the room before shutting the door behind him.
"Quiet," Andrea pointed a finger at him, "Be careful what you say."
"What's going on with you?" Lucas questioned as he shook his head, "Andrea everyone's noticed. There's something different about you."
"So what? I'm not allowed to change as a person?" Andrea crossed her arms as she stood up.
"You know that is not what I meant," Lucas gave Andrea a look.
Andrea had changed in the past three months more than anyone would've ever thought and no one knew what had sparked it.
Andrea had been more on edge of anything that walked. She barely slept due to the fact she'd wake up terrified and often someone would have to calm her down. It was like... it was like something was eating her up.
From the inside out.
"Leave it alone," Andrea looked at Lucas as she sucked in a breath, "You wouldn't understand."
"Would Eleven?" Lucas didn't hesitate in questioning.
Andrea felt as her chest tightened and she stared at Lucas. Her entire body froze momentarily before she seemingly went back to normal. Shaking her head as she laughed.
"What?" Andrea acted as if that were hilarious, "No. It's nothing like-"
"You can't lie to me, or any of us," Lucas responded as he looked at her, "You have that look in your eyes. Whenever something bothers you everyone knows because you get more protective. You're more on edge."
"I don't know what you are talking about," Andrea dismissed as she picked her bookbag off of the floor and placed it on her bed, "Can't I just be my usual protective self to the kids that Steve and I have practically adopted?"
"You can't fool any of us. You're right, you and Steve played the parent role to a lot of us since we met both of you. That means we know you better than you think," Lucas snapped before settling down.
Andrea stayed quiet after listening to Lucas' words, "I've ran for too long, Lucas."
Lucas seemed surprised before his eyebrows furrowed, "What do you mean?"
"They always say that your past comes back to haunt you," Andrea looked over at Lucas as she sighed, "I never expected mine to come back so soon."
Lucas looked nervous, the boy breathing a bit faster, "Andrea... they would never find you."
Andrea knew what Lucas was saying was not true. That she could easily have been found and that maybe they already knew where she was. She used phones which could've easily been listened to.
She was in public in government-funded schools where she was placed on a roster.
"They already know where I am. They always have," Andrea spoke as she held a distant look, "But I fear that someone within has already been close."
The two fell into a silence for a moment. Andrea watched Lucas' expression closely. She could easily tell he was anxious. She could see the fear that lingered within his eyes as he seemed to be conflicted.
Andrea knew that it was a huge mistake to tell Lucas, but who would believe him? She would deny it until the end. Deny the words that she had just told Lucas. Deny everything no matter who asked her.
"You've got to tell Steve," Lucas looked at her, "Steve and Dustin deserve to know. They would do anything for you."
"That's why I can't!" Andrea yelled, accidentally losing control as a surge ran through her which sent Lucas back into her door, "Lucas... I'm sorry."
Andrea realized what she had done. Fear and shock ran over her features as Lucas rose to his feet, shaking his head.
"It's okay. It was an accident," Lucas tried to help her, but she stepped back in fear.
She had just hurt Lucas. She hadn't meant to. She would've never purposefully done that to anyone unless they had hurt her and Lucas had not tried to hurt her.
Ever since that chip had been removed from Andrea, she would feel surges. It was almost like an entire powerhouse had been blocked off. She wasn't used to this, it was causing problems for her.
And it seemed that ever since that chip had been taken out, everything had begun to slowly spiral.
"Andrea," Lucas slowly began to walk over to the girl.
Andrea shook her head, "Stay back... I don't want to hurt you," Her voice wavered with fear.
"Andrea, you won't hurt me," Lucas gave her a look as he took big steps at a slow pace, "It's going to be okay."
Andrea felt as Lucas' arms wrapped around her. The boy pulled her into a hug while tears pricked at her eyes.
"Please, please, don't tell anyone," Andrea begged as she pulled back from Lucas, "Please just not yet... please, Lucas."
Lucas went quiet. His eyes scanned over Andrea's face as she begged him. Something she did not do to anyone. Andrea did not beg.
"I won't."
And he didn't.
Andrea stood with the other cheerleaders as they yelled and cheered for the basketball players as they ran into the gym from the side doors by the bleachers. The crowd began to roar with glee upon the sight of the boys.
This was the championship game after all.
"Let's go Tigers!" Andrea faked enthusiasm with the other cheerleaders as she hit her poms together as if she were clapping. "Let's go Tigers!"
The entire newsroom team stood off to the side by the doors causing the occasional flash of pictures. Probably getting whatever they needed for their new paper. Needing a sports section most likely that was going to be dedicated to Jason. Andrea could tell Nancy was staring at her - but she was far from being the only one.
Lucas was also peering over at Andrea every few minutes. She knew he was probably trying to make sure she didn't freak and send anyone else flying or he was just making sure that she did not get taken away.
A small smile graced Andrea's lips as she caught sight of Steve walking into the gym. He wore an old white shirt and walked in, another girl trying to talk to him. He was polite but his eyes immediately gravitated toward his girlfriend.
He sent her a wink and a wave while she rolled her eyes with a grin, sending him a wink back. A common thing between the two since Andrea claimed that air kisses were the strangest thing that she had ever seen.
Andrea mainly said that because the number of times Jason and Chrissy would air kiss during a game or practice made her want to shove her pom-poms so far down their throats that they would cough up the little colorful strings for weeks on end.
It was a tad aggressive.
The band played music that the cheerleaders would dance to while waiting for the game to start. Every game is opened by the national anthem and whoever the school managed to get come to sing it.
Andrea watched as one of the older teachers walked over to the microphone before opening his arms, "Everyone now please rise for our national anthem."
The tiger mascot raised his arms to the crowd as if saying to get up. Not many people hesitated to stand once they were told to.
"Singing for us tonight, we have a very special guest," The principal was standing weirdly as he stood in front of the microphone, "All the way from Nashville, our very own Tammy Thompson!"
The way the man said her name made Andrea fight back laughter before she watched Tammy run into the gym. Wearing a white coat over her frilly pink dress. She acted as if she were the most important person there, Andrea figured how her voice sounded would definitely give that away.
The crowd cheered nonetheless. Whistling and applauding her with pride and glee. One of Nancy's friends snapped a picture as she entered the gym with a bright flash of their camera.
Andrea looked back at Steve who was looking over at Robin in the band section. Both as equally shocked while Andrea laughed ignoring the glare that one of the cheerleaders sent in her direction.
Tammy waved at the crowd as she grabbed the microphone, "Oh say can you see, by the dawns early lights. What so proudly we held... at the twilights last gleaming."
Andrea was trying her best not to yell some sort of profanity, wanting nothing more than to cover her ears and run off. Or at least run and take that microphone from Tammy. Whoever claimed that she could sing definitely was tone-deaf. Or deaf in general.
The microphone continued to give back harsh feedback, poor Microphone has had enough as well, "And the rockets red glare! The bombs bursting in air... gave proof through the night... that our flag was still there."
Andrea was trying her hardest to keep herself together but she swore up and down that her ears were bleeding. Even the basketball team seemed to absolutely hate how she sounded. Andrea found it hilarious, none of them were standing still trying to keep it serious.
Whoever commissioned for Tammy Thompson to sing needs to be fired, immediately.
"O say, does that star-spangled... banner yet wave!" Andrea let out a loud sigh of relief once Tammy Thompson was off the floor.
Andrea made a few snide comments to the cheerleaders about how she sounded like a dying cow. One that someone needed to put out of its misery. Even apologizing to the poor microphone because she knew that no one listened to its cries, aka, the feedback.
And then, the game started. The basketball players ran across the court as they passed the ball between their hands. The opposing team running and chasing after the Hawkins players. Both teams were desperate to take home the win.
"Push 'em back, defense! Push 'em back, defense!" The cheerleaders exclaimed from the front of the bleachers as they worked through their cheers.
Watching as Hawkins managed to score points causing them to yell and cheer. Andrea made a face as Jason ran over talking to Chrissy momentarily before running off once again.
Andrea screamed at the team as she yelled out their cheers. Watching as they switched from defense to offense. She watched as the guys ran around the court until someone got knocked down causing the whistle to be blown.
Andrea sighed as she watched the players be moved around. Lucas was subbed in and the ball was being passed around. Score after score being taken by Hawkins High.
The cheerleaders never stopped. Yelling and screaming in glee as their team actually stayed in the lead for once. The other team though was catching up quickly.
But Hawkins never stopped.
Andrea watched as a time-out was called. The band continued playing while the basketball team tried to come up with a plan.
Andrea had to listen to the band though as the cheerleaders continued to do their dances. Swinging their hips with their poms while they got down onto the beat.
The band halted as the game started once again, everyone's focus being on the game. The ball bounced back from the rim and Lucas caught the rebound before shooting his shot at the final two seconds.
Andrea debated on helping him cheat, but decided against it.
She watched as his feet lifted from the floor before he threw the ball. The buzzer went off as the ball flew through the air. Everyone's heads turned as they watched, anticipation in the air. It was only a matter of seconds before the ball either went in or bounced back off.
And everyone rose to their feet to get a glimpse of what was going to happen.
Andrea felt as her heart pounded watching the ball go in before going around the rim and bouncing back against the backboard before going in the basket.
The screams of the crowd were loud. Hawkins High had won the championship. Andrea jumped up and down in the air before running out onto the court with the other cheerleaders as Lucas was lifted into the air.
"Lucas! Lucas! Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!" Everyone began to cheer.
It was a happy day for everyone in Hawkins. They had finally won a championship. And Lucas Sinclair scored the winning basket.
Andrea ran up and hugged Steve before he even made it down the bleachers. Steve does not hesitate to waste any time, lifting her off of the floor. Andrea's arms went around his neck while her legs wrapped around his waist.
"We won!" Steve exclaimed happily as he laughed, "You did good out there, hot stuff."
"Thank you," Andrea laughed.
Andrea watched as Steve signaled for her to let go, and she did. The girl's feet hit the floor as she let go of her boyfriend. A smile resting on her face before she placed her hands on her hips, the poms swishing slightly.
"I thought about tampering with the game..." Andrea admitted with a sheepish grin, "I almost did."
"Andy!" Steve scolded as he placed a hand above hers, "I thought you knew better..."
Andrea let out a laugh before making a face, pushing back every emotion she felt from the day she had, "I thought you hated touching my poms."
"I hate touching the poms but I love touching you and it just so happens your holding them against you," Steve made a fake pout before kissing her forehead, "Now we've got to get Dustin. His campaign should be over, right?"
"Right," Andrea nodded before pulling Steve along as she went to grab her bag.
Andrea didn't waste any time in placing her poms into her cheer bag. Waving Lucas off as the basketball boys took him out to celebrate their win.
Steve slung an arm around Andrea's shoulder as the two walked out to the parking lot. The two walked out together. A small smile resting on their faces. The two were in the pure bliss of the others arms.
"Dustin!" Andrea called out with a smile upon seeing the boy leaving the school in pure happiness.
The entire Hellfire club had walked out together. Cheering and jumping together. Even Erica was with them, wearing an American flag which raised a couple of questions.
"Nerds," Steve could not help but mutter.
"Shush," Andrea shushed him.
Dustin ran over to the car after finishing his talk with the others. A wide grin on his face as he adjusted his hat over his messy curls. It was clear whatever had happened during their campaign time was a win for them.
"We won!" Dustin cheered as he looked at his sister, "It was awesome!"
"That's good," Andrea smiled as she walked over to enter the passenger side.
"You guys are a bunch of nerds," Steve responded as the three loaded into his vehicle.
Steve was not wrong, they were a bunch of nerds. Nerds who could literally think of absolutely anything and it be true. Though, their game was a little odd. Andrea had once been subbed in to play and she couldn't understand a thing that was happening.
The entire ride to the Henderson home was full of talking. Andrea wasn't sure that she'd ever get the two boys to shut up. Steve telling Dustin how nerdy the game was and something about Eddie Munson while Dustin fought back.
Andrea gathered that Steve was slightly jealous of Eddie being around Dustin as much as he was.
The door to the Henderson household swung wide open. A gleaming smile on Mrs. Henderson's face as she brought out the plated food to the table.
"Good! You're all here," she smiled as she continued her actions.
Andrea was surprised that her mother hadn't said anything about Lucas coming to see or her the bang that she had heard. Come to think of it, she never actually questioned Andrea about what had happened.
"So, how long have you two been dating now?" Mrs. Henderson always asked this question, always wanting to know the answer.
"Since November 5, 1984," Steve responded as he looked at Andrea to find out how long.
Andrea did the math in her head but Dustin answered first, "One year, four months, and sixteen days."
Both teens looked at each other like 'oh shit'.
"Great job on the math, Dusty-Bun! Aw, young love," Mrs. Henderson seemed ecstatic, "Have you two talked about the future?"
Andrea looked at Steve as they both nodded. Oh, we are in for a loooong night.
