The next morning, Andrea woke up because Dustin nearly threw her off of the couch. The two siblings yawned before Andrea rose to her feet and stretched. Andrea picked up the blanket off of the floor, not remembering having one but shrugging it off, before she began to fold it back up and placed it on the couch arm.
She knew that it was probably something that Mrs. Henderson had done upon finding both kids asleep on the couch. She always would place a blanket on them no matter where she had found them asleep. It was thoughtful of her to do.
"So, do you want to go see Steve?" Andrea asked as she rubbed her eyes trying to wake herself up.
"If you can wake yourself up," Dustin teased his sister who sent him a glare.
"Just get ready," The girl shook her head at him before walking back to her room and shutting the door.
Andrea grabbed out one of her blue jean skirts. One which had multiple buttons going down the front. She slid off her pajama shorts and changed quickly into the skirt, not buttoning it all the way up as she rummaged through her shirts.
She settled on a striped collared shirt that was short sleeves, perfect for the summer heat. She pulled it on and tucked the shirt under her skirt before adding a belt.
"Andrea?" There was a knock on her door.
"Come on in, Dustin," Andrea finished fixing her belt before watching as her brother opened her door, "What do you need?" She asked with a smile.
Dustin grinned before asking, "I was wondering if I could do your hair?"
Andrea's eyebrows raised, "You want to deal with all this?" She pointed at her curls which were wildly untamed.
Dustin let out a chuckle as he nodded, "Yes. Can I? Please? I have curly hair too. I know how to fix it."
Andrea sighed as she crossed her arms, not finding it in her to say no to her brother, "Fine. You can do it under one condition."
"What is it?" Dustin questioned as he walked over to Andrea's dresser, grabbing the brush and spray bottle.
"Do not make me look like Steve," Andrea gave him a pointed look.
Dustin grinned widely as he laughed, "You got it. No Harrington cut for now!"
Andrea shook her head before moving to sit on her knees while on the ground so Dustin could sit on her bed. The girl was trying to prepare herself for whatever Dustin was about to do to her hair. She trusted him... but not with her hair.
"Can I put a small section in a bun?" Dustin questioned as he tried to section off her hair.
"Yes, you can. Need a scrunchie? I think ones on the brush," Andrea was trying her best not to shift around too much.
"Got it," Dustin sprayed some of her hair as he tried to pull it up, taking a scrunchie and messing around with her hair for a few moments, "Ta da!"
Andrea moved to look in the mirror and was pleasantly surprised, "You did good, D."
"You might wanna do what you usually do, you know, pull out a few pieces but other than that I think it's good," Dustin smiled at his sister before snapping his finger, "Oh! And I got you something."
Andrea did as he told before looking at him with an eyebrow raised, "And what did you get me?"
Dustin pulled something out of his pocket before holding the small packaging out to her, "Take a look."
Andrea gave him a look of confusion before taking it from him, slowly opening the packaging when a necklace slid out. A necklace that had a small strawberry charm.
"I know you don't like anything really flashy and Steve and I talked a lot about how you have a weird obsession with strawberries and I saw that when Mom and I were coming back home and I thought I'd get you something, you know?" Dustin placed his hands back in his pockets.
Andrea smiled widely as she began to put the necklace on, "You really are the best brother I could ever ask for."
"Now, we've got to get going. Your Romeo awaits us at the mall!" Dustin changed the subject as he walked outside.
"That he does," Andrea shook her head before sliding back on a pair of converse and running after her brother.
The two didn't take long in getting to the mall. Both riding side by side on their bikes after leaving Andrea's room. Riding down the roads and racing to see who could beat the other getting to Scoops Ahoy.
Andrea slid her bike into the bike parking and chased after her brother who had already entered the vast crowd of the mall. Andrea tries her best to slip her way through too, not wanting to cheat and use her abilities.
Her abilities which she hadn't used in a while.
"Excuse me, sorry, excuse me," Andrea slid through the people on the escalator as she tried to reach the bottom, "Gotta find my brother!"
Before she ran off, cutting off many people in their path to get into the different shops that resided around the mall. Andrea made the cut into Scoops Ahoy seeing her brother do his handshake with Steve causing her to laugh.
"How many children are y'all friends with?" Robin found herself asking.
Andrea let out a laugh, "Robin, this is my brother. The others are his friends that we've practically become the babysitters for."
Steve let out a sigh as he pointed at Robin before letting Andrea and Dustin get ice cream. Andrea got her usual strawberry cone while Dustin got the U.S.S butterscotch. They took a seat in one of the booths. Steve's hat sat on the table in front of him while Andrea and Dustin sat on the outer sides of the booth.
Steve's arm draped over his girlfriend's shoulder as she leaned into him while eating.
"Hotter than Phoebe Cates? No way," Steve shut that down and Andrea raised an eyebrow at her boyfriend, "Not referring to you, you are on your own level that no one can top babe."
"I better be," Andrea joked as she took another bite of her ice cream.
"Brilliant, too. And she doesn't even care that my real pearls are still coming in!" Dustin was happy that she didn't shame him, "She says kissing is better without teeth."
Steve was nodding and clearly weirded out by this statement causing Andrea to laugh, nearly choking on part of the cone, "Careful," Steve warned Andrea before looking back at Dustin, "Wow. Yeah, that's great. Proud of you, man! That's ro - that's kinda romantic."
"Steve," Andrea was shaking her head while smiling.
"That's like... wow," Steve managed to get out.
"Hm," Dustin seemed lost in his thought of happiness, "So do you really just get to eat as much of this as you want?"
"Yeah. I mean, sure. It's not really a good idea for me, though," Steve made a face before, "You know I gotta keep in shape for Andrea over here."
"Yeah, and how's that working out for you?" Robin retorted.
"Ignore her," Steve glared over at the other teen before looking at Dustin.
"She seems cool," Dustin seemed amused.
"Very cool. Robin's amazing," Andrea agreed as she finished eating the bottom of her cone.
"She's not," Steve looked at Andrea before looking back at Dustin, "So, where are the other knuckleheads?"
Andrea nudged into Steve's side and shook her head as if saying don't ask.
"They ditched me yesterday," Dustin explained.
"No," Steve looked shocked, getting the confirmation from Andrea that it had in fact happened.
"My first day back," Dustin looked back at his ice cream as he got riled up, "Can you believe that shit?"
"Whoa. Seriously?" Steve questioned.
"Don't worry, they're gonna get some shit from me," Andrea mumbled.
"I swear to God. Mm," Dustin took another bite of his ice cream, "They're gonna regret it, though, big time, when they don't get to share in my glory."
"Glory? What glory?" Steve asked, confused.
"We heard some strange stuff on his machine," Seven spoke as she leaned forward.
Dustin scooted closer to the couple as he mumbled, "So, last night. We're trying to get in contact with Suzie..."
"Oh?" Steve made a face that made Andrea snicker.
"Mmm. And, uh..." Dustin looked around before whispering, "I intercepted a secret Russian communication."
Steve had leaned forward but still had not caught what he said, "What?"
Dustin clicked his tongue before whispering the same sentence again.
"Just speak louder," Steve tried to get him to talk.
"I intercepted a secret Russian communication!" Dustin yelled, causing everyone to go silent and turn to look at the boy.
Andrea pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed while Steve moved back into Andrea, "Jeez, shh. Yeah, okay, that's what I thought you said."
Andrea shook her head at her boyfriend as she rested her head on his arm, "You idiots."
"What - what does that mean?" Steve questioned Dustin before moving his shoulder to annoy Andrea.
"It means, Steve, we could be heroes," Dustin explained as he planned it all out inside of his head, "True American heroes."
"I can be Leia Skywalker," Andrea beamed.
"Huh," Steve sounded like he liked that idea.
"Mm-hmm?" Dustin trailed off.
"American heroes?" Steve seemed to like this idea.
"Just think, you could have all the ladies you want and more..."
"Excuse me?" Andrea raised her eyebrows.
"Correction, you could have all the Andrea you want and make everyone jealous of both of you," Dustin reworded his sentence.
"All the Andrea I want?" Steve looked at his girlfriend who rolled her eyes.
"All," Dustin confirmed.
"I like that," Steve nodded his head as he looked at his girlfriend.
"You both realize I dictate that, right?" Andrea questioned.
"Of course I do, Andy," Steve nodded as he gave her a wink, "What's the catch?" He asked Dustin.
"There's no catch, I just need your help," Dustin looked over at Steve.
"With what?" Steve questioned now all in with this movement.
Dustin began to unzip his bookbag and Andrea went to move away from Steve, only to get pulled back. His arms now move around her waist to hold her in place. Dustin pulled a book from his bag and held it up.
"Translation."
The three had piled up in the back of Scoops Ahoy trying to translate this... thing that they had intercepted. Steve ate a banana and sat with Andrea on his knee while holding her close. Dustin replayed the same audio over and over again.
None of them could understand anything and it was driving them mad.
Andrea moved off of Steve and began to move around, getting annoyed before sighing hearing Robin yell for Steve. So, the girl herself went out and put on a Scoops hat one which belonged to her boyfriend as she walked out and helped Robin.
"I've got it, go on break," Andrea nudged Robin as she took over although she really had no clue what she was doing.
"Thanks," Robin wasn't even going to question it as she stormed through the back.
Andrea helped out a lot of the customers. Fixing their ice cream and taking the money.
"HI! Welcome to Scoops Ahoy!" Andrea smiled as she helped out customers, "What can I get you?"
And that went on and on for another ten minutes before Steve came out to help. The two swapped places, Steve taking over the register while Andrea fixed the ice cream and handed it out.
"This isn't your job, you know that right?" Steve tried to act like Andrea as he spoke.
Andrea tilted her head, "Yeah well I couldn't let poor Robin do it on her own."
"I was helping your brother," Steve looked over at Andrea who shrugged.
"I know."
Andrea didn't mind working around with this. Steve was talking to people and working the register while she just handed things out and gave a smile. Although, Steve nearly laughed seeing how fake her smile could get with the customers.
"You really don't like that much interaction, do you, hot stuff?" Steve asked as he grinned.
"I want to shove these cones up someones -" Andrea was cut off when Steve placed his hand over her mouth.
"Hi! Welcome to Scoops Ahoy," Steve answered the customer before letting Andrea go.
"We've got our first sentence," Robin broke up the moment when she opened the window.
"Oh, seriously?" Steve asked as he turned around.
Andrea finished handing out the ice creams before walking over and listening as Robin spoke, "The week is long."
"Well that's thrilling," Steve looked at Andrea with a boring look.
"They aren't wrong," Andrea shrugged her shoulders.
"I know, but, progress!" Robin grinned before shutting the door.
"You really are quite the optimist," Steve teased as he looked at Andrea before he walked back to the counter.
Andrea shook her head as she took her place back in front of the freezer with a Scoop, "Oh I know."
"Wait, Max and El?" Andrea almost hadn't caught them as she handed them their ice creams.
"Thanks," The two spoke in unison as they ate their ice cream.
"You're not supposed to be here," Seven gave the two a sharp look.
"Wait for a second, are you even allowed to be here?" Steve asked after looking at Andrea confused.
Eleven simply laughed before running out of the store with Max.
"No, no she is not," Andrea shrugged her shoulders, "That's their thing. Let them get in trouble."
"That... okay," Steve simply nodded before the two continued their work.
Hours. Hours. Andrea and Steve worked between switching out with Robin and fixing the ice creams going into translating some secret message from Russians.
Andrea wanted to run into a wall and just bang her head.
She sat on the floor in the back room while that stupid audio replayed over and over again. Dustin and Robin tried to translate it as she sat on the floor with her head in her hands. It was giving her a headache.
Who needed to be heroes when absolutely none of them understood whatever the hell this was? Andrea didn't need glory or fame. None of them truly did. Andrea was already in the public eye more than she wanted to be and she'd simply stay where she was in her class.
The day went by in a fast blur. Andrea couldn't have told you how out of it she truly felt by the end of it. The girl's hands were cramping and she couldn't feel her legs and her head was killing her.
She had already taken a nap behind the counter of Scoops Ahoy while Steve worked but that really didn't help much.
"The week is long, the silver cat feeds, when blue meets yellow in the west," was the translation that they had figured out.
Everyone stared at the sign in the darkness of the backroom, except Andrea who was laying on the cold floor seeing if that could help the jabbing pain in her head.
Steve pulled close the bars of Scoops Ahoy while Andrea continued to lay on the ground, "I mean, it just... it just can't be right."
"It's right," Robin stated as Steve continued to lock up.
"Honestly, I think it's great news," Dustin spoke as Andrea rose to her feet.
Steve made a motion for her to get closer to him, inevitably she did and he picked her up. Her legs wrapped around his waist as her arms went around his neck and her head on his shoulder. He held her up and tried his best to keep her ears covered.
The mall had been closed for nearly an hour. The Hendersons and their companions finally deemed it time to leave. Andrea, holding onto Steve as her eyes drooped shut, couldn't be any happier to be getting out of the damned place.
"How is this great news?" Steve asked clearly not understanding this at all, but neither was Andrea, "I mean, so much for being American heroes. It's total nonsense."
"It's not nonsense. It's too specific. It's obviously code," Dustin explained as they continued to walk.
"What do you mean a code?" Steve questioned.
"Like a super-secret spy code," was Dustin's simple answer.
"That's a total stretch," Steve shot.
"I don't know, is it?" Robin questioned.
"You're buying into this?" Steve questioned as he adjusted his grip on Andrea who continued to doze off.
"Listen, just for kicks, let's entertain the possibility that it is a secret Russian transmission. What'd you think they were gonna say, 'fire the warhead at noon'?" Robin questioned.
"Exactly," Dustin agreed.
"And my translation is correct. I know that for sure, so...the silver cat feeds. Why would anyone talk like that unless they're trying to mask the true meaning of their message?" Robin spoke as they continued to walk.
"Exactly," Dustin agreed with her yet again.
"Why would anyone mask the true meaning of their message unless the message was somehow sensitive," Robin had the brilliant thought.
"Exactly," Dustin was agreeing with everything that she said.
"So guess that confirms your suspicion," Robin looked over at Dustin.
"Evil Russians," Dustin nodded as he looked over at her.
"I can't believe I'm about to agree with this strange child, but, yeah. Totally, evil Russians," Robin looked back at Steve and Andrea before looking forward once again.
Andrea let out a groan before Dustin asked, "How do we crack it?"
"Well, I guess we translate the rest and hopefully a pattern emerges," Robin spoke as she thought it through.
Andrea felt as if Steve paused in front of something. Maneuvering around her to feel in his pockets for something.
"A quarter," Steve mumbled to himself.
Steve got a quarter and started to make the carousel work, "You need help getting up, little Stevie?" Robin questioned.
"Sh," Steve shushed her quickly as he listened closely, "Would you two just shut up and listen?"
And they did before Dustin spoke, "Holy shit. The music. The music!"
Dustin pulled out his radio before playing the recording. The music matched the machine.
"So these shits are in the mall?" Andrea mumbled out drowsily.
"Maybe they have these in Russia," Robin offered up.
"The Indiana Flyer? I doubt it. This code, it.... didn't come from Russia. Andrea's right, it came from here," Steve realized.
The creepy music continued to play for a few more minutes. Steve held Andrea tighter as he regained his composure. Everyone knew one thing at that moment.
The Russians were in the mall.
