xii

Andrea bid her mother goodbye as she left to go pick up Dustin and bring him home from his camp. The girl had quickly got up and she noticed as Steve had left the clothes that Andrea had stolen folded in a neat stack and placed on her bed with a small note 'here you go, princess - s.h.'

The girl changed quickly, letting her curls out of their imprisonment in her braids. Changing into a white and red sundress. The straps were very thin but Andrea wasn't too worried. It was flowy at the bottom despite it being cinched around her chest. The fabric had strawberries printed all over it and had a belt that hung around her waist.

Andrea had let her Mom get it for her so that she wasn't just in shorts and jeans all the time. The girl didn't complain about wearing this dress due to her eternal love of strawberries, thanks to Nancy and Steve introducing her to the fruit.

She walked back over to the pile of clothes she had of Steve's. Pulling the note off of it for a moment and staring at it before placing it back down and putting the clothes away.

Andrea smiled at the note once more before she walked out of the room. She walked into their living room and began to decorate around, trying to get everything ready for when Dustin would get home. Their friends even came over to help out.

"He's here!" Will exclaimed, giving everyone the alert to hide.

Andrea sat on the couch and greeted Dustin as he entered. It would've been strange if she had hidden so she knew that she had to be the one that stood out.

"Dustin! I've missed you," Andrea pulled her brother in for a hug, "How was camp? Did you have fun?"

Dustin smiled, though Andrea could tell it wasn't fully genuine, "It was fun. It was everything I wanted it to be."

Andrea twisted the cap on his head around, "That's great."

"Yeah," Dustin moved away from her before she could say anything.

She frowned knowing that he must've thought everyone forgot about him. She watched as he walked into his room and placed his bag down. She leaned against his door frame as he sat down on his bed.

"At least someone missed me," Dustin sighed as he looked over at his turtle.

Andrea frowned at his reaction before giving a small nod signaling for Eleven that it was go time. The girl uses her abilities and makes his toy robots turn on and move around. Dustin looked at his sister but noticed it was not her. Dustin began to look around his room frantically as everything began to make noise.

Dustin began to follow the train of toys and Andrea moved out of the way. She laughed as Dustin grabbed his hair spray and followed the toys out into the living room.

"It's just a dream, you're dreaming," Dustin tried to tell himself as Andrea followed behind him.

Andrea was trying to keep herself from laughing watching how her brother reacted. She watched as he ran over to the toys once they stopped moving and picked them up, inspecting one at a time while the others came out from behind the wall. Lucas fixed the welcome poster around in his hands.

Everyone began to count down on when to do it before Andrea pulled out her little noise maker and blew on it like everyone else. Dustin let out a loud scream and turned around spraying the hairspray into Dustin's eyes.

Eleven ran back into Mike due to being startled while Lucas screamed loudly as well. Lucas put his hands in front of his eyes blocking any more of the spray from getting into his eyes while Andrea pushed her brother's hand down.

"Dustin!" Andrea was laughing so hard at the action as she held the noisemaker in her free hand.

Andrea watched as Lucas was pulled into the kitchen by Max to fix his eyes after Dustin apologized. She knew that he was startled and she wasn't mad.

Andrea followed her brother in his room alongside Mike, El, and Will while Dustin showed off his creations from camp. Dustin was really passionate about what he had made and Andrea was happy for him.

"I call it... the forever clock," Dustin spun a little lever and caused it to move, "All right? Powered by wind. Very useful in the apocalypse."

Will took the creation from Dustin while he went to grab something else, "Exactly what we need," Andrea grinned as she had her hands on her hips.

"Then I give you... the slammer!" Dustin pulled out yet another invention with a hammer on the end, he pushed it forward to El and Mike who leaned back causing him to chuckle, "Pretty neat, huh?"

Andrea's smile only widened as she saw the happiness that radiated off of her brother, "Really neat."

"But this... this is my masterpiece," Dustin pulled out yet another machine and Andrea gave Mike a warning look seeing the look that flashed quickly across his features.

Dustin placed his back on the ground and began to unzip it. Showing everyone what hunk of metal resided within it.

"I would like you to meet... Cerebro," Dustin looked back up at the group with such joy.

"What exactly are we looking at here?" Mike found himself asking, having no clue what the jumble of wires and metal pieces was.

"An unassembled one-of-a-kind battery-powered radio tower!" Dustin explained as he placed his hands down.

"So, it's a... ham radio?" Will asked as he asked questions.

"The Cadillac of ham radios," Dustin added with such passion, "This baby carries a crystal-clear connection over vast distances. I'm talking about the North Pole to the South. I can talk to my girlfriend whenever and wherever I choose."

Everyone looked around at each other in shock, "Girlfriend? Really?" Andrea beamed happily, "That's great!"

"Girlfriend?" Everyone else in the group added once Andrea finished her sentence.

Dustin nodded before everyone prepared to go set up Dustin's machine.

"So her name is Suzie?" Mike questioned, following after Dustin.

"Suzie with a z," Dustin added.

"Girls go to science camp?" Will questioned, not knowing that was a thing.

"Is she cute?" Mike questioned.

"Think Phoebe Cates, only hotter," Dustin seemed proud of his newfound girlfriend.

Dustin opened the door as Mike carried the big parts of the machine, "What's going on?" Max asked.

"We're going to talk to Dustin's girlfriend," Will seemed almost as happy for Dustin as Andrea did.

"Girlfriend?" Lucas shot up from the water while Max nearly ran him over to follow the others.

Andrea ran up the hill alongside her friends to get the Cerebro high enough that Dustin could use it. Quite frankly, it did take a bit to get to.

"Aren't we high enough?" Lucas questioned, obviously getting tired.

"Cerebro works best at a hundred meters," was Dustin's response.

"You know, I'm pretty sure people in Utah have telephones," Max retorted as she carried up a piece of luggage.

"Yeah, but Suzie's Mormon," Dustin explained.

"What's that?" Andrea questioned.

"Oh, shit. She doesn't have electricity?" Lucas questioned.

"Oh, that's the Amish," Max spoke as she corrected her boyfriend.

"What are Mormons?" Will questioned as confused as Andrea.

"What I wanna know," Andrea nudged Will's side.

"Super religious white people," Dustin explained loudly so that everyone got the memo, "They have electricity and cars and stuff, but...since I'm not Mormon, her parents would never approve."

Everyone continued to trudge up the hill. The grass rubbed against everyone's skin and Andrea's dress.

"It's all a bit... Shakespearean," Dustin explained as he looked behind at everyone.

"Shakespearean?" Max questioned, confused.

"Yeah. Like Romeo and Juliet," Dustin spoke with a large grin.

"Right," Max deadpanned.

"Star-crossed lovers," Dustin looked over at Lucas as he spoke.

"I got it," Max nodded.

"Hey, guys!" Mike yelled as he and El stood at the bottom of the hill.

Everyone halted their actions and turned back to look at the couple. Obviously annoyed by the sudden need for a stop when they were trying to get to the top of this hill.

"This is fun and all, but, uh..." Mike tapped his watch.

"I have to go home," Eleven added.

Andrea crossed her arms giving the two a look, "Really? You can't spare any time for your friend?"

"We're almost there," Dustin pointed up the hill, clearly saddened by this.

"Sorry, man," Mike apologized before adding, "Curfew. Come on, let's go."

"Good luck," El yelled back as she grinned widely before running off with her boyfriend.

"Curfew my ass," Andrea spat under her breath, "They've gone to be all lovey-dovey."

"Andrea," Max let out a small laugh at her annoyance.

"Curfew at four?" Dustin asked after looking down at his watch.

"They're lying," Lucas snapped.

"It's been like this all summer," Will explained as he sighed.

"It's romantic," Max smiled as she watched them.

"It's annoying," Andrea grumbled under her breath.

"It's gross," Will added after Andrea.

"It's bullshit," Dustin huffed out, "I just got home. Well, their loss, right?" Andrea could tell he was trying not to be upset, "Onwards and upwards! Suzie awaits!"

Everyone let out a groan except Andrea and Will. Andrea turned to keep walking up the hill but noticed the absence of Will. She halted and turned to see him with his hand on his neck once again staring off.

"Will?" Andrea questioned as softly as she could despite the distance between the two.

"Will, come on!" Dustin yelled.

Andrea watched as Will began to run up the hill. He ran past Andrea who was still looking around, feeling something was off before she shrugged it off and continued to go uphill.

Sweat beaded down her forehead as her curls began to get wild from the heat. The sun had begun to set and Lucas kept drinking more and more water while Max glared at him.

"Did you seriously just drink the rest of our water?" Max asked, clearly annoyed.

Lucas spits some back into the canister before holding it out to Max who gave him a look. She shook her head before everyone began to get to work to help Dustin

They continued to put all of the pieces together. Spinning coil around the wires and taping whatever needed to be taped done. It took them nearly an hour before they pushed the thing to stand.

"Pretty impressive, right?" Dustin questioned as everyone looked up at the invention.

"Yeah," Max was out of breath as she spoke.

"Now, you ready to meet my love?" Dustin questioned as he looked back at everyone.

"Okay, sure," Max didn't seem enthused.

"Yeah!" Will made up for the other's lack of enthusiasm.

"When am I not?" was Andrea's response as she sat down.

Dustin began to mess with the machine, "Suzie? This is Dustin. Do you copy? Over," Dustin spoke through his device to get static, "One sec. SHe's probably... She's still there. Suzie...this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over."

Still nothing but radio static.

"I'm sure she's there. It's just-" None of the friends seemed impressed, though Will clearly had hope.

"Yeah?" Lucas questioned.

"You know, maybe she's, like, busy or-" Dustin was cut off.

"Yeah," They tried to make him believe.

"It's around dinnertime," Dustin added yet again.

"Mmm," Lucas dropped the act.

"Yeah," Max said as her arms crossed.

"Here," Dustin sighed before trying again, "Suzie? Do you copy? This is Dustin, over."

Dustin continued to try until night. The girl had fallen asleep and she felt bad. Will was sitting beside the girl until he woke her up.

"Hey..." Will nudged Andrea awake as he pointed at Dustin.

"And Dustin's obviously lying," Max shot at the boy.

Andrea sat up quickly, too quickly, and got dizzy, not stopping her from glaring at Max, "Don't call him a liar. Not everyone sits around a radio all day. People have things to do and lives to go live."

"Come on, Duan Jaun," Max stood up and offered Lucas a hand.

"Where are you going?" Dustin asked, his tone dropping.

"Home," Max shot at Dustin.

The three watched as Lucas and Max ran back off down the hill. Just as Eleven and Mike had done hours earlier. Though, they hadn't even made it halfway up the hill.

"Well, guess it's just the two Hendersons and you, Byers," Dustin looked at his friend.

"Uhm, it's late. Sorry," Will apologized as he looked at his friend, "Maybe tomorrow we can play D&D or something fun! Like we used to?"

Andrea gave Will a small smile as she nodded, "Definitely."

"Yeah, sure," Dustin agreed.

"Welcome home," Will smiled at his friend before leaving as well.

"Yeah, welcome home," Dustin sighed as he looked down.

"Ignore them, well except Will. He's genuinely missed you like I have," Andrea placed a hand on her brother's shoulder before the radio went wild.

"Shit, shit," Dustin got down trying to get it to work, "Suzie? Suzie, is that you?"

"Dustin... I don't think that's Suzie," Andrea didn't understand the language but she knew that Suzie most likely spoke English.

Dustin increased the volume as he listened closely to the sounds. Neither of the siblings understood what it said but they were going to get to the bottom of it. They were sure of it.

"Hey, how about we go watch a movie? We can spend some time together and tomorrow you can go show Steve your back. He's missed you," Andrea spoke after the long silence after the radio had shut off.

Dustin looked over at his sister, still trying to figure out whatever the hell just happened, "Yeah.... Sure."

Andrea and Dustin left nearly twenty minutes later. The two went back into their house and changed into whatever they deemed comfortable.

Andrea wore a pair of pajama shorts and a Star Wars t-shirt that Dustin helped her pick out. She looked through their small collection of VHS tapes. She chewed on her lip before turning back to look at Dustin who was in the kitchen making popcorn.

"What should we watch?" She questioned as she placed her hands on her hips, "I don't know what you'd want to watch."

Dustin looked over at his sister, she saw the frown that rested on his lips and the dimness of his eyes, "Pick whatever. I don't care."

"Dustin," Andrea's tone got soft, "Is it about everyone leaving?"

Dustin looked back at the microwave before speaking, "I just got back, Drea, and they all just left like it was nothing... the only one who even seemed to care was Will!"

"That's because Will is a boy who has a big heart. Mike? He's so caught up with Eleven that he doesn't really see anyone. Lucas and Max are probably better off being distanced with the arguments they've had," Andrea walked over and placed her hands firmly on her brother's shoulders.

"But you aren't like that. You didn't leave me for Steve," Dustin looked at Andrea, he looked as if he was about to cry.

Andrea gave him a sad smile, "Because as much as I adore my boyfriend, you are my brother. You come first."

"And Eleven's your sister but you see how she is..." Dustin mumbled as he looked down.

Andrea pushed bits of Dustin's hair around, "Eleven and I are complicated. I expected her to push me away a lot sooner than she did but that's something the past has a reason for and quite frankly, I'm not her. We are two completely different people and I chose to stay with you."

Dustin hugged Andrea before either could say anything else. His arms wrapped tightly around her before she hugged him back. The girl rubbed his back in a soothing manner. She knew how much Dustin had missed his friends and she knew he was excited to see them, just for them to blow him off in the end.

It made her upset.

Andrea pulled back from Dustin and grinned, "Hey. How about we watch the Empire Strikes Back?"

Dustin's eyes lit up, "Of course. It's the best of the trilogy! But you can't talk about how cute you think Luke is!"

"What?!" Andrea let out a dramatic gasp, as she placed her hand over her heart, "But he's a sweetheart!"

"But you've got a boyfriend," Dustin added as he grinned at his sister, the sadness passing away.

"Yes but this is a fictional man, I see no problem," Andrea faked a pout before laughing, "Fine. I won't talk about Luke Skywalker."

"Okay," Dustin gave her a strange look.

Dustin continued to get the popcorn out of the microwave before he moved to sit on the couch after turning the lights off while Andrea placed the VHS tape in the tv before pressing play and moving to sit down with her brother.

The two Hendersons had a smile on their face as the movie began to come on. Both of their eyes were shining with joy. There was nothing better than little moments like these.

"I really did miss you," Andrea spoke as she took a few pieces of popcorn and ate them, looking between Dustin and the movie."

Dustin grinned widely at his sister, "I really missed you too."

The two watched the Empire Strikes back in the peacefulness of their home. Not a worry on their mind as they laughed and ate popcorn together, occasionally cracking some sort of joke that would make the other cringe.

Dustin seemed to have the most jokes though, having to come up with them at random times during the movies before they speculated their Star Wars theories. Neither realized how late it had gotten or how tired they grew over the hours.

I missed this.

Andrea truly had missed this. It was good to have her brother back after his month-long stay at camp, a stay in which he had managed to snag a girl of his own. Andrea was proud of him and she hoped that he did not use Steve's dating advice on this girl.

It wasn't long before the two siblings had begun to doze off. Andrea with her legs placed under her as her body was leaning on the arm of the couch. Her head nearly hung off as she slept peacefully with Dustin sleeping while leaning against her.

Mrs. Henderson walked into the room, hearing the loudness of the movie, and turned it off. Finding the way that her two children were sleeping as she placed a blanket over their sleeping frames with a small smile.

"Sleep well," She whispered before going back to bed herself.
