Jeongin stood in front of the door to a classroom, unwilling to take a step inside and enter. The dreaded day had finally came, the day he officially transferred schools to where his step brother currently learned. It wasn't that he was afraid of the new school, he had enough bravery to face a whole new group of people. But it was the fact that he'd be going to the same school as his step brother.
As soon as Jeongin takes one step into that classroom, he's facing the reality he's desperately trying to run away from. He'll have to see Hyunjin's face all hours of the day, go home with him after school everyday, go to lunch with him everyday. The only solstice he'd be able to find was in the classes he takes, but even then who knows if they shared a class together somehow? It was extremely tempting for the boy to turn on his heel on made a mad dash towards his home, his old home.
But then he remembered what his dad had told him. He promised that if Jeongin could deal with Hyunjin at school for a week, he'd get his braces removed as soon as possible. While his step mother found his braces adorable (and frankly he was little flattered by her saying that), he was sick of the having these metal bars on his teeth. He couldn't touch his teeth without feeling the jail that kept them locked away. While he didn't like Hyunjin, his hatred for braces was even stronger.
He reached towards the door handle, before the door swung open itself. Jeongin quickly retracted his hand out of fear of getting hit by the door as he stepped back away from it. When he looked up again it was a teacher that stood in his way, looking down on him like he was a small child. "You really are here. I was wondering where the new student was, I didn't see a new face at the desks." He stated, urging him to enter with him.
Jeongin reluctantly did so, following after him into the chattering classroom. His eyes scanned the class, making eye contact with the students who bothered to check who had came in. There were murmurs and whispers that began to stir up as Jeongin continued to walk behind the teacher. "Hey, hey, quiet down! You all are entirely too loud." The teacher spoke, catching the attention of the class.
The class quieted down and all attention was placed on Jeongin. Though the boy spaced out, staring at the back of the classroom as he was lost in his thoughts. All he could really think about was his friends from his school in Busan. Though they didn't talk as much as they used to know that they were in Seoul, they were still close friends of his. He remembered that two of his friends were foreigners, one from China and one from America, and he had some upperclassmen friends too...
"Jeongin." A voice snapped him out of his daze. He turned his neck towards the teacher in confusion, looking for clarification on what was happening. "Introduce yourself." They stated, pointing towards the class. He glanced over to see that the entire class was still staring at him, some giggled as they found his situation funny.
"Jeongin. Yang Jeongin." He told him, fiddling with his fingers and feeling the metal cage on his teeth with his tongue. "I'm from Busan and I moved here with my dad and my step mom..." Jeongin trailed off, wondering if he should mention Hyunjin or not. Though the thought of mentioning Hyunjin worse several situations he didn't want to be in, so he ultimately decided against it.
"Seungmin," The teacher called. A boy in the back who hadn't been paying attention rose his head off the desk, blinking his eyes sleepily as he tried to play off being awake. "You can sit by him for now, seating arrangements are being changing soon so don't get too comfortable there." The teacher is explained, and Jeongin only nodded his head before scurrying towards the boy who had been called.
He felt... awkward. How many of these kids were actually born in Seoul? How many clicks and little friend groups had been made from the beginning of the year that he'd suddenly crash on? No one would want to make friends with him, he's just some random kid from Busan. Who cared about some random transfer kid?
"Wow, so Busan huh?" A whisper spoke, catching Jeongin off guard as he sat down. He glanced to the desk beside his, only to be greeted by the eyes of a stranger, the Seungmin kid. It took him off guard, not excepting him to get stared at. "What's it like there? Is it nice? I heard it's beautiful there, even in the winter." He questioned.
"Uh, I guess? It's still cold in the winter like everywhere else." Jeongin responded, glancing towards the front of the class. The teacher had began teaching the class, writing down notes and lecturing them on some subject he hadn't even touched in his old school. He scrambled around for some sort of pencil and paper, going to do his best to keep up.
The boy grabbed a notebook out of his bag, but was pencil-less. He didn't even have a pen on him to write down something. Though the boy next to him handed him a pencil, spinning the writing utensil in his hand. "We're you rich and lived by the beach? Are the beaches as nice as people say they are?"
"If I was rich I wouldn't be going to this school." Jeongin stated, taking the pencil from Seungmin's hands. He huffed as he began scribbling down on his paper as fast as he could, trying to keep up with the teacher as his fast paced notes. "And I only went to the beaches every once and a while. My dad didn't have enough money for that whole every month trip that you all think we do." He explained, trying to cut the conversation short.
Seungmin only smiled, pressing his head against the desk so he could catch a glimpse of his face. "You said you moved here with your dad and step mom right? How do you like it here? Do you like Busan or Seoul better? Do you wanna hang out with me at lunch?"
"You ask so many— wait what?" Jeongin questioned, placing down the pencil with a confused look on his face. "You barely know me, why are you asking me to hang out with you at lunch?" He muttered, trying not to get caught by the teacher.
Seungmin pat his back and gave the boy a thumbs up. "To get to know you! And so you can get to know me. Oh, you wanna know something about me? A helicopter crashed into my apartment once, that was such a weird day..." He spoke. While the boy continued to blabber on about things, Jeongin's head fixated on one single thing. The helicopter moment he mentioned and quickly breezed past. "I like taking photographs... those are fun to do!"
"Wait are we just going to pretend you didn't say a helicopter crashed into your apartment?!" Jeongin exclaimed, a little too loud. Seungmin put his hand on the boy's mouth and hushed him, while the rest of the class turned their heads towards the two boys who were a bit too disruptive. Both Jeongin and Seungmin muttered an apology to the class, the two with an awkward expression on their face.
The two faced forward, paying attention in class for a about five seconds before immediately leaning over and whispering to each other. "Yup! One day I was just sitting in my bathroom, brushing my teeth, and boom! A helicopter crashed into the apartment!" Seungmin explained, making an explosion noise and hand movements to put emphasis on his statement. Jeongin "oo"ed softly, just imagining the scene and what would happen if that happened to him.
"And you weren't scared? Not one bit?" He questioned and Seungmin shook his head no in response. The boy gasped, leaning back in his seat as he processed everything in his head. "That's so crazy... I can't believe you just dealt with that like it was nothing." Jeongin explained, trying to get rid of the shock that was still left inside of him.
"My mom was going crazy about it, I can still remember her expression when I left for school like nothing happened." Seungmin snorted, looking back on the past and trying to conceal his laughter. He turned his whole body around towards Jeongin, an eager grin on his face as urged the Busan boy. "What about you? As anything crazy happened to you before?"
"Me?" Jeongin asked, pointing to himself. Seungmin nodded and Jeongin had to think long and hard about this question. "Hm... not really? Nothing eventful like that happens in my life." He explained and the boy simple snorted.
"Come on!" He urged, pushing Jeongin lightly. Seungmin rapped his fingers on the desk as he eagerly waited for an answer. "There has to be something that happened! Bizarre things happen to people every day!" He told him giving examples of weird and crazy things that may or may not have happened in a person's life before.
Jeongin thought about for a little longer, not wanting to disappoint this boy after he told him about the helicopter incident. "Well... I guess I can tell you about this one thing..." He trailed off, and so began the long class period of bizarre and weird stories from the past that the two got to share with each other.
