chapter thirty-six.
Quietly hiding behind the thin walls that separates the hallway and her father's bedroom, Konon listened attentively to the 49 year old man talking on the phone. She just got back from the studio after practicing another dance cover with her friends and once she entered the homestead, a loud and straining voice belonging to her father's, echoed through the household. Filled with sudden curiosity, Konon immediately went up and decided to listen to the conversation.
Lucky her, her father was on a Skype call, making it more easier for Konon especially when the person he was talking to was on speaker.
"I don't think this is the right time to talk about it. Don't you know that the two are practically rivals? How do you think would they react once they find out the truth? They're still kids — "
"And if we tell them as early as now, the better. The fued that they lit up would grow into a massive fire if we don't do anything! They need to know about Yukio. We can't keep on hiding this from them Tsuyoshi. You are the father and you should know what's best for you're kids!" the woman scolded.
Konon felt dumbfounded. A month ago, an envelope with a sonogram and a portrait of a cemetery was hidden in her dad's room. Now second, her father is yet to unravel a secret that he has been keeping from her and her brother. A mixture of confusion and anger conjured up her head.
The truth is somehow alike to a time capsule. It both holds great treasure but no matter how deep it was buried, someone is bound to dig it up again and reveal it to the world.
Tsuyoshi sighed in defeat. He knew sooner or later he had to tell his kids the unfortunate events that had happened in the past but he wasn't expecting that he'd be telling them this soon. "I will. I will. Just give me some time, I can't just run out of my room and talk to my daughter out of the blue. She'll probably think I'm being shameless."
"Sure. Make sure you keep you're word alright?" Tell them that Riki and Konon's. . ."
Konon placed a hand on her mouth, she couldn't believe what the woman said. It made her want to burst in tears.
Sitting at a quiet corner of the practice room, Riki ignored his fellow Adroit schoolmates and went to stare at the door's entrance. The competition was still on-going at the main hall but some of his members craved for food and wanted to grab lunch as soon as the dancers change from they're costumes to they're casual attire.
From all the competitions he went to, this was probably the most boring. He felt a bit soulless and tired right after the performance. He didn't even have the energy to cause havoc and tease his teammates which was apparently a shocking change.
Noticing the japanese boy's quiet figure, Daniel approached Ni-ki and sat beside him. "Ni-ki hyung, I need you're advice on something? Can you help me?"
"If the topic is about academics, I'm out."
Daniel scratches the back of his neck. "Well uh. . . yeah it is about school but my question isn't actually math nor science related. It's about my assignment in english and I'm in need of you're judgement since you are actually a year above me."
"Go on."
Explaining his assignment, Ni-ki like listened and tried to come up with ideas that could help his junior. The korean - american boy decided to make a poem about a love story between a soldier and a princess. "So I was thinking that the princess will go along with the arrange marriage and after maybe two to four years she would file an annulment and find the soldier whom she love and marry him. Boom! Happy ending. What do you think?"
Ni-ki hummed in response. He had to admit that Daniel came up with an interesting plot but there were some parts that seems so unrealistic. "You're plot will do well. But I think it's better if you change the ending and also give focus on the soldier's feelings."
"Yes. When it comes to love stories, most of them usually focuses on the girl's pain rather than the boys which is actually unfair to us. We're not heartless creatures who moves on that quickly. In fact! It's actually men who takes quite a long to move on from breakups rather than girls. Researchers can guarantee that fact!"
Ni-ki ruffled the boy's hair. "That's true. And in the end maybe the princess could just stick with the prince and let the soldier find and marry another woman. Because let's be real here, just because they are the leading male and female characters, doesn't mean they are bound to end up with each other. That's not how it should always work."
Daniel gasped, coming into realization. "So that's why love stories are getting a bit boring these days! It's because the audience are already aware that the two leads would end up with each other anyway." he grabbed his notepad and jotted down notes.
Ni-ki has no interest in watching movies or series with love as it's center. There were scenes that looked so impractical, especially when it comes to the part wherein a boy would use the word 'unique' as a reason on why he felt so attracted to the girl when actually the world is filled with different individuals with different personalities and perspectives, she isn't the only unique one there.
From some of the love centered dramas that his Sunoo hyung dragged him into watching, Love Alarm had the most factual ending. Because let's face it, you're first love doesn't mean that he or she should be you're last. You're bound to meet new people along this lifetime.
"I'll meet you here later, I'll just go out and order us some food."
After parting ways with Nina, Saeyoung entered the hospital and went up to the third floor where Himiko's room is located. For sure, Soul was already there since he arrived four hours ago. When he got a call from his mother, he instantly appointed Jeongseob to lead the team while he's gone out to visit his sister.
Saeyoung wanted to follow him but she couldn't, she still has to fulfill her duty as a member of the news casting committee. And also deal and explain to her fellow Adroit teammates on why and how she was given the opportunity to dance with Hyevin. Some were disappointed of her decision but she didn't mind since they'll be forgetting this whole thing even happened in a span of a month or so.
Slowly opening the door to Himiko's room, she could see that the doctor was still in a deep conversation with Soul and his mom. While his little sister lied in bed asleep.
"I'm so sorry Mi-yoo but I'm afraid that we have no choice but to perform a heart transplant for Himiko. She's already experiencing major heart failures and if we choose to let her be, her risk of dying will increase by seventy-seven percent."
Just by listening to the doctor's words, Saeyoung couldn't believe that Soul and his family has been going through a tough time. She is yet to meet Soul's little sister and now she's thinking that maybe she won't even have the slightest chance to at least talk to her, once. Thinking about it makes Saeyoung feel so bad for Soul and his family that a tragic event like this could happen to such an innocent little girl.
Soul's mother, Mi-yoo exits the room with the doctor to be more familiar on what's going to happen at her daughter's planned transplant, leaving Soul with his sister. Saeyoung took this chance and quietly entered the room. She approached Himiko's bed and stared at her face — which was filled with air tubes. This sight terrified her.
"I don't think I have the rights to be sad right now. . . But I just can't help myself. This is the least scenario I would have imagined Himiko would be in. . ." tears rapidly flows out of Soul's eyes, he's slowly breaking apart. Saeyoung could already feel the intense gravity harshly pulling her chest down, it hurts as fuck.
"What is she diagnosed with?"
"Coronary Heart Disease."
Saeyoung bit her inner lip. Himiko's condition was way serious from what she had in mind. She sat down on the couch, her head hung low. Soul's sniffles were loudly heard. She wanted to flood him with questions but the mood wasn't right. That's why she'd just set her questions aside for the meantime and let silence envelope the room. There was nothing she can do rather than listen to Soul's small whimpers.
"H-Himiko is not who you think she is. . ." he managed to say through sniffles. He wiped his tears with some tissues and reached out for the little girl's hand.
"What are you saying?"
Soul heaved a heavy sigh. He can't believe that he was about to apprise a secret to someone out of their family. He had so many close friends back in his team but he chose to say this to Saeyoung of all people. "H-Himiko i-is not a child of my mother. . ."
Saeyoung's lips parted at his answer. "W-What are you saying? T-That Himiko is not bloodly related to you? Is. . . Is she an orphan?"
"H-Himiko. . . Himiko. . . is the last and youngest child of Yukio's family. H-Himiko is a. . . . . . is a Nishimura. ."
