KENNEDY HAD NEVER felt this heavy as she stared blankly out the passenger side window of her BMW. Pain lay heavily on her chest, it felt constricting, as if with each second someone was squeezing her heart tighter and tighter. She hated this feeling, she felt weak, like she was pathetic to dwell on her ending relationship with her mother. Kennedy despised the woman but there was always a small part of her that believed that one day her mother would change and love her as she was meant to. But she should've known that was just a pipe dream.

Cynthia was a cold and calculated woman that cared about nothing except for herself and only controlled her family in order to fit her own narrative. Kennedy wondered what made her mother get to that point, was she ever a good person? Who made her this way? For the longest time, she pointed the blame at her mother's parents, but they were never that intense. Of course, they were the typical preppy rich that had been passed down through each generation of Thorntons, but they never were cruel, they never treated her mother as she treated Kennedy.

Kennedy shouldn't dwell on how her mother came to be, there's nothing that can undo what happened this morning, Kennedy will never have a relationship with her mother again. She doesn't even think that they could reconcile later in life, her mother is always going to stay the same and Kennedy can't have somebody like that in her life. She was already almost destroyed once, she can't let that happen again.

She's riddled with regret, there's so much of the fight that she wishes she could've changed, there's so much more that she wanted to say, but fear was lodged in her throat and she just couldn't get it out. It was understandable, the way she was treated still haunts her memories, and the abuse was blatant like the woman didn't even care that she was hurting her child in front of people. Kennedy assumed that she was going to get slapped a few times, knowing that the things that she would say were going to offend the older woman. But she never thought there would be a small clump of her hair missing, it still throbs lightly when she touches it. It wasn't noticeable but Kennedy knew it was there, and that's what hurt the most.

Her car was quiet, a deadly silence lingered in the air as she and JJ sat in an empty parking lot of a lookout point that they used to come to all the time last summer. There was a small hum from the radio as the two didn't say anything to each other. Since this morning, JJ went silent, he barely said a few words to Kennedy. She could tell he was upset by what her mother said, he got beaten down by the woman with just a few words. Kennedy was used to it so it hurt a lot less than it hurt him. She could visibly see a new weight sit on his shoulders, he was worried that what her mother said was true, she could just tell.

But the thing is, Kennedy would never see it that way. She views JJ as the person who saved her from a life of misery. From a plastic life that came with living in Figure Eight. When she was young it didn't seem so bad, she was comfortable where she was, almost afraid to venture off into the unknown. But she didn't want that anymore, she didn't want to be tied to a loveless marriage that was certainly going to come out of her relationship with Rafe. Before they ended things, Kennedy remembered her mother bringing up marriage a few months ago. The older woman was visibly intoxicated, but she went on and on about visioning Kennedy with a beautiful white veil as she walked towards a handsome Rafe with a wonderfully tailored suit.

Kennedy could barely get through her words, a sickening feeling flooding into her stomach, it was almost as if the woman was forgetting that Kennedy was just sixteen. The girl had her whole life ahead of her, there was no way she was going to tie herself down to someone that never seemed like her forever person. She wanted to go to college, experience the outside world, and not get stuck in a relationship that was never going anywhere in the first place. But now that was all gone, she no longer had to stick to those toxic people, they weren't controlling her, watching her movements like a hawk. They were gone, they would no longer have that suffocating grip that they once had. She was free.

She wanted to tell JJ everything she was thinking, just to reassure him. He shouldn't have to feel the weight of her mother's words, they were never meant more than just a cruel intent. She doesn't care about him, and she just wanted to hurt both of them, and hitting him where it hurts could affect their relationship. She turned from looking at the sky toward the blond in the driver's seat. His eyes were glued to a perfectly rolled joint in his hands, rolling it between his fingers subconsciously. His mind seemed to be somewhere else, and his thoughts did not look visibly the greatest as a frown began to etch onto his lips.

"J, are you okay?"

The boy instantly snapped out of it at the sound of her soft voice, turning he sent her a small shrug, "Yeah, I guess,"

"What my mom said..." Kennedy began, but it felt like her throat closed up, having a hard time actually talking about what had happened. The boy seemed to be on the same page as her as his body visibly tensed up, while a big part of her wanted to stop, but she needed to get this out. "It's not true, she's wrong,"

"How is she wrong Kennedy? You got disowned because of me,"

"JJ, it doesn't matter, it was going happen eventually, I was not made for that kind of life," Kennedy began, her heart aching watching the doubt never leave his face, even after her words. She hated it, he shouldn't have to feel this way, it wasn't his decision, and it was never his fault. The blonde girl reached out and gripped his hand, the simple touch from her completely knocking him out of his imploding thoughts. The boy glanced over to the teary-eyed girl next to him, "You need to believe me when I say that you did nothing wrong, you saved me, JJ. You gave me the confidence to be free from that life,"

The boy paused as if taking in her words, and an unfamiliar emotion to Kennedy began swirling in his eyes, there were tears lightly brimming in his eyes, but he didn't dare to let them slip down his cheeks. All the emotions began to build, everything that has happened in the past few days began to overflow, and he stumbled over every emotion. There was an emotion washing through the air, neither of them had the courage to say it, not now at least. This was uncharted territory for them, hell, everything that has happened lately was something they'd never dealt with before.

So many emotions swirl around them, it felt almost suffocating, as if their breaths were getting sucked away by the unsaid words. But they don't want to overstep, and they don't want to move another inch, fearing that one small movement or word could make their relationship crumble down within a matter of seconds. They don't want to step too far, they couldn't. Right now, they felt like the only thing they had was each other. And they wouldn't be able to take it if it turned to rubble at their feet.

Kennedy stared at him, praying for him to say something. She needed him to say something. The girl felt so vulnerable, her words spilling from her heart.ย  It looked as if he didn't know what to say, and it made her stomach lurch. He had to say something, she couldn't add the feeling of embarrassment to the list of emotions that lay heavy on her chest.

Her hand was still intertwined with the pogue's in front of her, she didn't even notice it. She was so stuck in her head, so lost in her desperation for him to speak, that she only noticed when his grip got tighter. Her eyes darted down to the hands, but her gaze immediately jumped back up to meet his when he began to speak.

"I'm just sorry for how things played out, I just didn't want it to hurt you this much,"

Kennedy sighed at his words, dropping his hand to reach up to cradle the left side of his face. The boy practically melted, finding so much comfort in the simplest of things that she did. "JJ, you know it would've gone down that way in any circumstance. My mom and Rafe, they were bound to hurt me eventually, even if you weren't a part of it,"

JJ closed his eyes, finding her heavy words more painful, "I know...I just-"

"Just nothing JJ," Kennedy clipped, her other hand finding a place on the other side of his face so she could have his undivided attention as if she didn't already have it. "It's done with, we can't go back and change it, and I don't want to,"

JJ reached up to hold one of her hands, finding himself leaning into the touch without even trying. Kennedy smiled softly, her heart beating roughly from the small scene in front of her. She knew she was the only person in the world to see this side of him and it felt so damn special. These small moments were made for them and only them, and she would never be able to describe how much that truly means to her.

"They're never going to hurt you again, Sunshine," JJ muttered, reaching over to run this thumb just under the cut on her cheek. The girl dropped her own hands, letting them fall to grip the center console lightly. Kennedy wanted to grimace, a slight sting erupting from the movement, but she knew JJ would retract his hand from holding her cheek, and she didn't want that. He was so tender, she couldn't ruin that. "I won't let them,"

Kennedy smiled at the words, and a single tear of relief dripped down her cheek, finding his words more comforting than she could ever begin to explain. She finally felt like she had someone that would do anything to protect her, someone who understood the level of severity of what she's gone through. He was here, saving her from the monsters that have had such a tight grip on her for so long. No one had been able to do anything, and here he was running into the situation practically blind, but managing to take her away from all the things that kept her on a tight leash.

She didn't know what to say, she was speechless. Yet there were so many things that she itched to say, so many things that would permanently change the severity of their relationship. But with everything that happened, it was not the time. They just needed to live in this little bubble for only a little longer. And she was going to do absolutely everything to maintain that.

They stared at each other for a few moments, just taking in each other. It was peaceful, like all the things that were said to them this morning faded away in the summer breeze just outside the car windows. Before she could even comprehend what was happening, they both subconsciously were leaning in, quickly meeting together in a searing kiss. Their movements were synchronized, everything coming back naturally. They read each other like books as if they had studied the other's movements for years.

It all felt so right, so perfect. From his hands all over her, his lips meeting the soft skin of her neck, he was perfect. Kennedy had never felt so comfortable with someone touching her. With Rafe, it was all so impersonal, he never handled her with care. He touched her as if he owned her, as if he had the right to. JJ was different, he held her like she was an angel sent from heaven. As if he had never tasted anything sweeter than her. He held her like she was the greatest thing he had ever seen. He gave her everything she ever wanted. He never did anything without her permission, like he did it all for her enjoyment. He didn't take, he gave. He wasn't selfish like every other teenage boy, he treated her like she deserved.

Before she could even understand the motions, getting so lost in it all. She was finding herself climbing over the console to fall into JJ's lap, the strap of her sage green sun dress beginning to slip from her shoulder as the boy slowly toyed with it. Kennedy's hands delicately rested on the boy's shoulders, lips twisting up softly, feeling the lingering touches that he left on the straps.

The boy disconnected from the girl, a small teasing smile playing on his features as he glanced at Kennedy with her crystal blue glazed-over eyes and puffy red lips. The girl leaned away from him with furrowed eyebrows, confused by the remembrance dawning on his face and the cocky smile that paired with it.

"I remember this dress,"

Kennedy snorted, watching him play with the ends of the flowy material. Her heart pounded feeling him trace his fingers over her thighs, but a warmth flooded her chest remembering the infamous night when she wore this dress. Her wearing it was completely accidental, it was the only thing that was in the room where they resided last night, other than her midsummers dress and the tight pajama bottoms.

"Oh yeah?" Kennedy teased rhetorically, her thumb running against JJ's jawline, truly loving how close they were. Not wanting to change it for the world. "I don't quite remember, could you remind me?"

"You wore the first night we met," JJ replied without a beat, pulling her into him, enjoying the sweet smile tugging at her lips. "Saw you at a kegger last summer, with Riley and Sarah attached to your side. I swear to god, it looked like you owned the place. I was so ready to go up and give you a pick-up line or two, but I just knew Riley would've never let me live that down, so I didn't. Luckily, an hour or so later you were walking down by the water by yourself and that was when I decided to go up to you,"

Kennedy nodded, her chest light as she was instantly transported back to the moment the slightly buzzed blond was hesitantly coming up to her. "Oh yes, then you said hi, and then spilled your stupid beer all over me,"

"It was an accident," JJ groaned, his head falling back to hit the headrest in annoyance, Kennedy laughed vibrantly and the noise brought a warm smile to JJ's lips. "I was nervous and tripped,"

"Nervous? Why the hell were you nervous?" Kennedy questions, a confusing look falling over her features. A teasing glance was sent his way. She smiled teasingly, as she rose up to cup his cheeks in order to pull him closer to her, "Were you intimidated by the big bad Kennedy Thornton,"

"Shut up," JJ snorted at her words, pushing her face away from his in a joking manner. The boy sighed looking at her, a slight crimson coloring his cheeks, "I was nervous because you looked pretty, okay?"

Kennedy paused, any ounce of her teasing nature quickly dissipated when she took in his words. "You were nervous because you thought I looked pretty?"

JJ rolled his eyes, not enjoying the slight embarrassment that was filling his veins, "That's what I said, didn't I?"

The girl had never felt like this before, there was something in her chest, she loved watching him get flustered, it was one of her favorite things, just watching the simple action of crimson bleed into his cheeks. She knew she was the only one who made him act like this and she ate it up. "Do you get nervous by my beauty a lot? If so it's totally understandable,"

"Literally shut up," The boy quipped in a faux annoyance, but the amusement on his features told her everything she needed to know.

"Okay, so yes then," Kennedy concluded, wrapping her arms around JJ's neck as she toyed with the neckline of his shirt. The boy paid no mind to the action, immediately finding his hands falling on her hips. "Again, it's very understandable, I'm literally gorgeous,"

There was no response from the boy, only him rolling his eyes with a smirk twisting upwards. Kennedy opened her mouth to tease him more, finding a huge amount of amusement in this whole reveal. But her words got caught in her throat, feel the boy intruding into her personal space as he leaned towards her lips. Kennedy immediately accepted the intrusion, instantly forgetting the conversation that was just playing out.

There was a comfort in the way they picked up on the intensity they had before, and Kennedy could feel the butterflies fluttering roughly in her stomach, knowing what this was going to lead to. After everything today, this was something she needed. Just a moment where they could forget where they were and what happened, where they could just be them, where no one could bother them. Kennedy felt the boy move his hand under her dress, ghosting them slightly under the material so he could touch her bare skin. Kennedy let out a small gasp in between kisses at the sudden movements, to which the boy quickly disconnected their lips.

"Is this okay?"

Kennedy smiled, sending him a small smile and nod, "Of course,"

There was a moment when the boy paused just to stare at her, an emotion of seeming adoration swirling in his eyes as he examined her. Kennedy wanted to say something, to tell him how much she appreciated him at that moment. But she stopped herself, feeling him start to pull down the straps of her dress as he leaned forward to connect their lips with a fever they did not have before.

The unsaid things, the three words that were so desperately on the tips of their tongues, got expressed in the only ways they were able to. Through the quick pace touches, the clutching of skin, the passionate breaths, everything they ached to say was now swirling in the air. The three words lodged in their throats were practically looming over them, just from the simple, meaningful touches. They were never the type to express themselves through words. Small and sentimental glances, and skin-on-skin contact was what they needed to understand how the other felt. While deep down they ached for the affirming words, right now this is all they could give. And just for the moment, this was alright.
