WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE how much Kennedy hated her brother at this moment. She had spent a good hour and a half fooling around with Riley and Sarah as they got ready. A blunt was passed back and forth between Kennedy and Riley as they pre-gamed lightly for the night ahead. Goofy outfit changes entertained the three, while Kennedy and Sarah were splayed across the king sized bed, Riley praced around the large room, blunt placed between his fingers, bouncing along to a random pop song that flowed through the air. Laughter spilled from Kennedy's lips, a feeling of euphoria dancing across her skin, watching her best friend goofily move around her room in some heels her mother bought her last year.
Overall, the small blonde was in a good mood, forgetting about the foreboding pogues that she would no doubt meet tonight, she ignored the bubbling anxiety, just focusing on the feeling of being excited to get drunk off her ass for the time in a while. But as soon as they made their way down the stairs, the smile that was etched on Kennedy's scarlett red lips instantly fell.
The boy she had been avoiding for the past few days was chattering along with her brother. The heart that was slowly filling with hope and serenity for the night ahead, crumbled to the marble stairs under her. Kennedy had the knack of avoiding the Cameron boy when she didn't want to fix things. When they don't talk it gives Kennedy the free air she desperately craves. It lets her shoulders drop, forgetting the weight of their relationship. She can imagine a life that doesn't constantly revolve around Rafe Cameron's toxic personality. But here he was, ready to weasel his way back into the arms of the Thornton girl.
All eyes were on her once again, here she was having to make another decision she didn't want to make. Yet again, she was slowly getting dragged into a relationship that gave her nothing but pain and exhaustion.
Conversation between the two boys in foyer ceased, apologetic eyes washed over the enigma, Kennedy resisted the urge to scream. Riley audibly groaned once his eyes drifted to the Cameron boy, making Sarah send a light slap to his chest. Kennedy rubbed her sweaty palms against the linen material of her white summer dress, before making her way down the stairs, eager to get this over with.
"What do you want Rafe?" The blonde questioned with her arms crossed, feeling his leering eyes making her skin itch.
The boy wrung his wrists nervously, already feeling anxious from her harsh tone, "I was wondering if I could talk to you?"
"Talk," Kennedy clipped, trying to ignore the slight glare from her brother that stood behind Rafe. She immediately knew he thought she was being harsh to his friend, Kennedy just sent him a condescending glare, not caring about what he thought.
The Cameron boy looked from her to the two eavesdropping teens behind her, "Alone,"
Kennedy sighed loudly, dropping her hands to her sides, "Fine, kitchen,"
"Kenn, let's just go," Riley remarked behind her, the blonde turned to look at the boy, knowing what his mindset was. The girl went to open her mouth but her brother cut her off.
"I think you should hear him out,"
The Cameron boy's eyes lit up, sending Kennedy a hopeful look, "Kennedy please?"
Kennedy turned to Riley for a last time, giving him an apologetic glance, "Just give me a few minutes,"
The Masterfield boy sighed, slightly disappointed in how quickly his best friend gave in. A new weight laid in Kennedy's chest at the sigh, but she played it off with a stone cold glance as she sauntered past both boys at the end of the staircase, making her way towards the kitchen. Instantly she heard the steps of Rafe behind her, with her hands clenched into fists, she pushed the kitchen door open.
"Okay talk," Kennedy's voice rang tired throughout the tension filled air, she leaned on the marble island, resting her chin atop her fists.
"You look beautiful," Rafe complimented in hopes that it would ease the annoyance written on her face, but it didn't.
The blonde rolled her dark blue eyes lightly, ignoring the small compliment, knowing it was just a tactic for him to ease the tension,"What do you want?"
"To apologize,"
Kennedy stood straight up from her resting position, giving him a weary glance, "Rafe can we do this another time, I'm not in the moo-"
"Kennedy, please just hear me out," The boy interrupted instantly, quickly rounding the corner of the island towards her, eyes pleading, "I know I've been the shittiest boyfriend lately, I've just been struggling with my dad and I've been taking it out on you, I'm so fucking sorry,"
Sympathy seeped into Kennedy's bones watching his seemingly sorry eyes bore into hers. She saw a tear brim in his eyes, making Kennedy feel guilty for ignoring him. Kennedy moved towards the boy, slowly falling back into Rafe's spell. "Rafe, you can't say that stuff anymore, you don't understand how much that affects me, it's embarrassing,"
Hands soon gripped her cheeks lightly, Rafe nodded immediately, "I should've considered that Kennedy, I'm so sorry, I'll try to be a better boyfriend for you,"
Her eyes were filled with conflict as she gazed at the Cameron Boy. Her stomach bubbled with uncertainty, the resolve she had before was slowly chipping away the longer she stared into the boy's eyes. All of the words of leaving him that filled her brain before were slowly fading away, and the expectations of what people expected of her flooded in. The history, the seemingly happy times between the two, all weighed on her shoulders. She didn't have a choice.
"Rafe..." Kennedy trailed, swallowing the pit in her throat, feeling a hopeful swipe of Rafe's thumb against her cheek, "I forgive you,"
"Thank god," Rafe sighed, pulling her close in a swift motion. Without a fight the girl complied, accepting the grateful kiss from the boy. Separating and leaning his head against hers, a bright grin twisted on the boy's face, which made the girl falsely reciprocate the smile. "I love you Kennedy, more than you probably will ever know,"
The blonde ignored the tight clenching in her chest as she forced out another lie that weighed her down, "I love you too Rafe,"

TENSION WAS ALREADY making an appearance in the small group of kooks as they worked their way through the crowd of people that resided in the boneyard. On both sides of her lies two men that absolutely detest one another. While one sent the other rough glares, the older boy looked oblivious as he had a strong grip on Kennedy's waist, guiding her along with the other three kooks he was following.
Sarah instantly ran out of the car, an innocent, almost childlike smile gracing her pink lips, she seemed oblivious of the slightly concerned Topper that was trailing behind her. Kennedy took her time, already wanting to get rid of the aggressive tension between Riley and Rafe. Sigh after sigh slipped past Riley's lips, watching the older boy's hands never leave Kennedy's body. The blonde knew he was disappointed, but god forbid Rafe would ever give them some time to themselves. Rafe had never left Kennedy's side, almost as if he was worried she would change her mind and tell him to leave her alone.
Kennedy wanted to enjoy tonight, but she knew that wasn't part of the plan, she knew she would never have any time to herself, if she wasn't going to be with Rafe, she was going to be with Riley. She knew she should've ditched this whole kegger and gone off by herself, at least at that moment she could have the peace she wanted.
As she was planted on a log next to her boyfriend, cups of beer were slowly getting fed into Kennedy's ring-covered hands. With a false smile and chipper laugh, the blonde downed the drinks with a purpose. Hoping to be able to ignore the tension between the people around her. She regretted forgiving Rafe, of course she did. But she felt every pressure on her in the moment and she became weak and picked the easiest thing.
"Kenn babe, you gotta slow down, that's like your third beer," Rafe chuckled in amusement at the small blonde, completely oblivious to why she was really drinking.
The girl gave him a small glance and tight-lipped smile, "I'm alright,"
Rafe rolled his eyes teasingly, soon pulling the blonde closer to him, "If you so say Kenn,"
The girl squirmed lightly out of the touch, finding it too confining. A look of questioning concern swirled in Rafe's eyes at the action, but his attention was quickly pulled away when Kelce's words were directed at him.
Kennedy rolled her eyes, finding her drink much more than the conversations around her. The murky luke-warm liquid burned lightly going down, but it created an almost euphoric feeling to swim through her veins.
The night couldn't seem to move faster, time ticked slowly by, and Kennedy wanted nothing more than to leave, to be by herself. But instead, she sat with a bunch of kooks, eyes glued to the flames dancing in the fire in front of her, wanting nothing more than to throw herself into it.
"Kenn I can't take these idiots anymore, I'm gonna go find the pogues," Riley's hushed voice filled the air next to Kennedy.
Trying to hide her tone of disappointment, Kennedy nodded wordlessly, "Okay, see you later Ri,"
The boy rested his hand on her left shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze, "I'll check on you in a bit, okay?"
"Okay," Kennedy breathed out with a tight-lipped smile, watching the boy make his way towards a smiling Pope and John B.
Kennedy envied their carefree smiles, their genuine words, and everything that Kennedy couldn't do. Instead of being invested in the conversations flowing around her, her eyes wandered around the beach, looking for no one in particular. She focused on the warm summer breeze washing over her skin, ignoring the constant touch from the boy next to her.
"I'm really glad that we made up, Kenn," Rafe whispered to the girl.
The words grabbed her attention from the crashing waves ahead of her, turning she gave him a small smile, "Me too,"
"At least we're happy about it, some people can't seem to get over it,"
Kennedy's eyebrows drew together in confusion at his words, "What do you mean?"
"Masterfield," Rafe quipped bitterly, taking a sip of beer as if the name left a sour taste in his mouth, "He's been huffing and puffing about it since we made up,"
Kennedy just sighed, her gaze falling to her hands, "You know how Riley is, he's just protective over me and doesn't want to see me hurt,"
"He's just being an asshole," Rafe scoffed, sending her a frustrated look, "Maybe he should just mind his own business,"
Kennedy swallowed thickly, trying to ignore the rough tone that came with his words of hatred, "It's Riley, I doubt he would do that,"
Rafe sighed, eyes falling to his drink, "I just wish people would just let us deal with our relationship, I don't need input from other people on how to treat you,"
Maybe you should get some input. Kennedy sucked her lips into her mouth, trying to avoid the truthful words that bubbled in her throat, "With dating me comes criticism, especially from the people who care the most about me,"
"I wish it didn't,"
"It sucks, but what can you do?"
Rafe shrugged lightly, "Nothing I guess,"
"That's the spirit kid," Kennedy joked lightly, knocking her shoulder with his. Hoping her seemingly bright attitude would ease the tension of the conversation they were having.
The Cameron boy scoffed in amusement at the comment, "Shut up Kennedy,"
Eyes burned into the side of her face, looking behind the boy next to her, Kennedy made direct eye contact with the boy she detested more than anything. The crystal blue eyes of JJ Maybank remained slitted into a glare, hearing the small blonde's vibrant laugh from a few yards away.
From the moment the sound flushed through the air, JJ recognized it instantly, his ears perked up, eyes scanning to find the culprit of the melodic sound. The girl he was flirting with immediately attempted to gain his attention again, but his mind was instantly somewhere else, or rather someone else. She rolled her eyes scoffing, soon trudging away to find another conquest. But JJ couldn't care less, his eyes were glued to the two kooks he hated the most.
Seeing the blonde smile jokingly at a boy he hated more than anything, made an unfamiliar feeling burn in his chest, something that shouldn't have been there. The smile faded away once she met his fiery gaze. His eyes refused to leave hers, the glare turned into a challenging staring contest. Unsaid words of hatred were washing over them in waves with just the look in their eyes. A look of disgust flashed in JJ's eyes watching the oblivious, slightly buzzed Rafe Cameron tuck a strand of hair behind Kennedy's ear.
An idea flashed in Kennedy's brain, mischief swirled in the blonde's eyes as she remained glancing at JJ. The boy felt his stomach erupt with unease, watching the scheming smile twitch onto Kennedy's ruby-red lips. Without warning the blonde kook leaned forward smashing her lips to a confused but delighted Rafe.
While a tight grip was soon wrapped around Kennedy's waist, her challenging eyes never left JJ's angered ones. The blonde wrapped her arms around Rafe's neck, soon using her right hand to flip JJ off. The action of the perfectly manicured middle finger left a sting to bloom in JJ's chest. The blond pogue grunted in anger at the scene in front of him, he down his beer instantly, crushing the cup in his hands and letting it fall to the sand below him. With one last hateful glare sent to the kook princess, he was off with the intention of getting progressively drunker. He suddenly felt too sober for this.
Kennedy separated from her boyfriend with a victorious smile pulling at her lips. The Cameron boy had a look of slight bliss spreading across his face from the aftershocks of the kiss, "What was that for?"
Kennedy gave him a small shrug, not daring to tell him the real reason as to why she did it, "I don't know, I just felt like it,"
Rafe chuckled lightly, throwing an arm over her shoulder to pull her close to him, "Well, I wouldn't mind if you did it more often,"
"Noted," Kennedy remarked, her body soon coming down from the adrenaline rush that came with making JJ angry. The blonde's eyes soon drifted down to the empty cup in her hands, feeling the urge to walk around by herself, she felt this would be a perfect excuse, "Hey, I'm gonna get another beer,"
The boy next to her sent her a small nod, "Do you want me to come with you?"
"No it's okay, I'm also gonna go find Riley so I might be a bit," Kennedy added on, soon jumping up from her seat. A sigh slipped past her lips, feeling a slight ache from the muscles in her legs stretching.
Rafe raised his eyebrows in confusion, "Where did he go off to anyway?"
"He went to see the pogues," Kennedy stated bitterly, smoothing out the parts of her dress that had scrunched up when she was sitting down.
The blond kook scoffed, giving her a disgusted glance, "How can you let him hang out with those lowlifes?"
"He can do whatever he wants, I don't own him," Kennedy shrugged, slightly defensive of her best friend, not liking the tone that Rafe had at all.
"Well you should tell him to stop hanging around those shitheads, he'll become one of them sooner or later," Rafe quipped hotly, soon down the rest of his beer. "And plus, he'll probably catch something,"
Kennedy laughed at the absurdness of the last comment, thinking Rafe was just joking, but with the sour look settling across his features, she knew he wasn't, "What? You think he'll catch a fucking STD or something?"
"They're dirty pogues Kennedy, he could catch anything from them, I wouldn't be caught dead hanging around disgusting people like that,"
Kennedy scoffed loudly, crossing her arms in slight offense, even though nothing was directed towards her, "I'm not a fan of them either, but at least I can acknowledge that they're human beings,"
Rafe gave her an annoyed look, pulling a blunt out of his pocket, and lighting it instantly, "Well none of us kooks should have to fraternize with lowlifes, they only scum up the air,"
"So you're telling me if I was a pogue, you wouldn't date me?" Kennedy hissed lowly, being conscious of the other people around the fire, not wanting them to hear their conversation.
Rafe paused to inhale smoke into his lungs, which only made anger rise in Kennedy's veins, "Honestly...probably not,"
"Well, honestly if I was a pogue I wouldn't get caught dead dating a douchebag like you, I could never stoop so low," Kennedy gritted through her teeth, eyes turned into slits at this point of the conversation. More offended that he, Rafe Cameron, wouldn't date her.
Rafe gave her a condescending look, which made the blonde's blood boil further, "Well if I'm such a douche then, why the hell are you dating me?"
"I ask myself that question a lot," Kennedy clipped, fury swirling in her bright blue eyes.
Rafe snapped his head to her, a sudden offense rising on his features, "What the fuck does that mean?"
She rolled her eyes, laying a dainty hand on his left shoulder, a condescending smile twitching at her lips. "Read between the lines dipshit,"
Kennedy didn't bother to wait for a reply, turning away to stride away to find her best friend. But a rough hand caught her arm tightly, and a loud gasp escaped her lips from the sudden pain that vibrated through her skin.
Rafe sent her a harsh glare, grip getting tighter, with each word, "You mind telling me what you mean? I guess I can't read between the lines,"
Kennedy flailed in the grip, fear slightly rising in her bones, never seeing this side of Rafe, "Let go of me, you're hurting me,"
The level of fear and powerful boom of her voice caught the attention of a few groups around her, slowly turning their heads to a slightly frightened Kennedy Thorton and furious Rafe Cameron. Her heart pounded in her chest at the looming look that shadowed Rafe's features, she attempted to rip her arm away from him but he refused to let go. "I said fucking let go of me,"
Suddenly most of the pogues appeared, with a concerned Riley in tow coming up to the scene. Riley scrunched up his eyebrows in anger and confusion, "What the fuck is going on here?"
After realizing more and more eyes were on him, Rafe dropped her arm, rubbing his sweaty palm against his khakis. He tried to play it off with a casual grin, "Nothing, just a little argument, everything's okay now, right Babe?"
The term of endearment made Kennedy almost throw up in her mouth, her anxiety was slowly bubbling over. Tears slightly dripped down her cheeks, her mascara turning her tears a murky grey. She gipped her forearm closer to her chest, "Fuck you,"
All eyes burned into her small body, the panic began to be too much for her to bear. She met the concerned eyes of her best friends, her brother, and oddly the pogues. The slightly distressed gazes of JJ and Kie are what set her off, it suddenly became hard for her to breathe.
She bolted right between the two pogues, she heard her name being called, but she couldn't care less. The farther she ran, the farther her problems were, and that's exactly how she wanted them to be. With each pump of her legs, the noise of her name being called became small echoes in the distance. Her thudding heart slowed as she got farther and farther from the person who caused that to happen.
She really needed to stop settling for shitty guys.
