„Peter“, Susan slowly said. „Do you reckon he wakes up?“
Peter looked away from his pale brother who was lying on his bed to his sister.

„He has to“, he said quietly.

„But if he doesn't? He's had the cordial like ten minutes ago!“

Peter knew that.

He knew it.

„He's not going to wake up“, Susan quietly said. „He's...gone.“

Peters breathing fasted.

No. No. No.
Edmund wasn't gone.

Susan said more things and all of them made him angrier - sadder, more desperate.

„GET OUT!“, he yelled.
He didn't want to yell.
He wanted to be alone.
He wanted Edmund to wake up.
He wanted everything to be normal.

But Susan left shocked the room and Edmund didn't wake up.
And Peter sat in his room next to his brother and felt alone as never.

„Wake up, Eddy“, he choked. „Wake up.“

But Edmund didn't.

Someone came in and closed the door.

„Susan said you screamed at her“, Lucy quietly said.
„I did“, Peter whispered.
„Why?“, Lucy asked and sat down next to him.

„She said Edmund wouldn't wake up“, Peter said.

„But he will“, Lucy whispered. „Right?“

„Yes“, Peter said. „He will.“

Peter was alone again. And all of sudden Edmund opened his eyes.
Peter jumped up, he probably screamed out of luck, but he couldn't really remember it.

Edmund was a little bit confused.

But Peter didn't care. His little brother was alive and he was awake.
His face was covered with a happy expression, but this disappeared as Edmund said: „You can't protect everyone.“

„What?“, Peter asked.

„You tried to protect me and you failed several times. You can't protect everyone.“

„I can“, Peter said. „I have to! I promised Mum! I can't just...break...that promise!“

„Then you shouldn't have made it!“

Edmund stared him straight in the eyes, his face as stern as rarely.

At this point were tears in Peter's eyes.

The two brothers stared at each other, both not knowing what to say.

And then Peter left. He just got out of the room. He needed to get out. A break.
He needed to be alone.

He heard Lucy calling his name.
But he didn't care.
He just ran on.

Then you shouldn't have made it.

Maybe Edmund was right.

Maybe Peter really couldn't protect everyone.

But he would try.
