THE PERFECT GIFT

The last few weeks had been a blur, filled with Newt's constant research into magical creatures and Davina's long hours of studying. Despite the busy days, they still found time for each otherโ€”talking about their day, enjoying long walks to their favorite spot, and sharing the quiet moments in between.

Pickett, too, had behaved surprisingly wellโ€”aside from the two times he almost gave Newt away, once when Davina's father nearly caught him talking to the bowtruckle in his pocket.

Everything seemed fine, but there was one thing weighing heavily on Davina's mind: finding the perfect Christmas gift for Newt before they both went off to spend the holidays with their families. She had an idea, but wasn't entirely sure if it would be the right one.

With a nervous flutter in her chest, Davina walked briskly through the hallways, her scarf fluttering behind her and her ponytail bouncing with each step. She had decided to ask her father for help, knowing that if anyone could provide the right advice, it was him.

Stopping in front of his office, she took a breath and knocked softly on the door.

"Come in."

Davina entered, feeling the cool breeze from the window where her father stood, hands clasped behind his back, gazing out at the snow gently blanketing the school grounds.

"Hello," he said, turning to face her with a warm smile.

"Hey," Davina replied, pulling her scarf tighter around her neck. She hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "I, um... I have a question."

Her father raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "Ask away."

She fidgeted nervously, unsure how to begin. "Well, with Christmas coming up soon, I've been thinking about getting Newt a gift," she said, her voice faltering slightly.

Her father's smile deepened. "That sounds lovely. What did you have in mind?"

Davina glanced down, twisting her fingers together. "That's the thing... I know what I want to get him, but I'm not sure where to find it."

Albus Dumbledore waited patiently, his expression open and inviting. "What is it? Perhaps I can help."

Taking a deep breath, Davina finally blurted, "You know those enchanted bags? The ones that can hold endless things inside? I thought about getting one of those for Newt."

Her father blinked, his expression shifting to one of confusion. "What would Mr. Scamander need such a thing for?"

Davina swallowed, quickly thinking on her feet. She couldn't tell her father about Newt's secret creaturesโ€”he would never understand. But she could offer a plausible explanation.

"Well, Newt has so many books," she said. "Just yesterday, he couldn't fit them all on his shelf. So I thought... maybe it could be like a little portable library for him, a place to carry around all his research."

Albus was quiet for a moment, clearly considering her words. Then, a spark of understanding lit his eyes.

"That's a thoughtful idea, Davina," he said, his tone soft. "These bags can be tricky to find, but I just so happen to have one right here."

Davina's eyes widened as she watched her father gesture toward the case Pickett had first climbed into on his first day at Hogwarts.

"Oh, Dad," she began, her voice wavering with hesitation. "That's your case... I mean, you carry it with you all the time. I don't think you shouldโ€”"

Before she could finish, Albus crossed the room and picked up the case, holding it out to her with a gentle smile.

"I don't need it anymore," he said. "As teachers, we don't usually have much to carry with us while teaching. I'm sure no one could make better use of it than Mr. Scamander."

Davina's eyes filled with surprise and gratitude as she accepted the case. It felt like a gift of more than just a magical objectโ€”it was an expression of trust, of love, of understanding between father and daughter.

She set the case down beside her, her heart swelling with emotion. Without thinking, she walked over to her father and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug.

Albus chuckled softly, returning the hug with one arm. "There's already a small office set up inside the case," he said. "I thought it might come in handy for organizing books or notes."

Davina pulled back, her smile brighter than ever. "Thank you, Dad. This means so much to me."

He smiled warmly, his eyes twinkling with affection. "Now, now, no need to get sentimental. You'll be late to dinner if you stand here too long."

Davina laughed, nodding quickly. "Right! I'll go get this to my room now."

As she hurried out of the office, case in hand, her heart light with happiness, Albus Dumbledore returned to his window, a proud and contented smile on his face.

Davina hurried down the Great Hall, her heart racing with excitement. She nearly tripped over her own feet as she slid into the seat next to Newt, her favorite brunette boy. He glanced up at her, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"You're late," Lizzie remarked, not looking up from her meal, but clearly aware of the delay.

Davina shot Lizzie a knowing glance. "Oh, you remember that thing I was going to do?" she asked, referring to the secret mission she had shared with Lizzie about finding the perfect gift for Newt.

Lizzie's eyes sparkled with understanding, her smile widening. "Ah, right. Did you get it?" she asked, her voice low but eager. The rest of their friends glanced between the two, clearly confused by the cryptic conversation.

"Yes, I did," Davina replied, a proud smile on her face as she thought back to her conversation with her father. She couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment.

Ophelia, however, furrowed her brow. "You two are weird," she said bluntly, clearly missing the context of the exchange. She took another large bite of her food, her focus on the plate rather than the conversation.

"Anyways, what are y'all doing for Christmas?" Ophelia asked between bites, clearly shifting the topic.

Julien, who had been eating in silence, looked up with a soft smile. "Me and my family are doing our yearly trip to Hogsmeade, then it's just a cozy family Christmas," he explained, his eyes lighting up as he spoke about his family's tradition.

Davina smiled at him, knowing how much Julien cherished the holiday with his family. They were always so close-knit, and she admired that.

"What about you, Lizzie?" she asked, leaning in slightly.

Lizzie met her gaze with a sly smile. "You know we'll meet up over the holidays," she said, her tone teasing. "And the rest is just the usual family stuff."

Ophelia paused for a moment, glancing around at the group before letting her eyes rest on Newt, who sat as usual, quietly picking at his food.

"What about you, Scamander?" she asked loudly, breaking the silence and causing Newt to snap his head up, startled by the sudden attention.

Newt nervously fumbled with his hands, looking for words. "I-I'm just going to spend time with my family," he stammered, trying to keep the explanation brief.

Davina watched with a small, understanding smile. She always tried to pull Newt into conversations, hoping to show her friends that he was so much more than just the quiet, awkward boy everyone assumed he was.

"Didn't you tell me you were helping your mom?" Davina asked, swallowing the last of her food in one gulp.

Newt's eyes darted to hers, clearly unprepared for someone to press further. He hesitated before replying, his voice quieter than before. "Uh...yes. She's taking care of magical creatures called Hippogriffs," he explained slowly, careful not to stutter.

"That's pretty cool," Julien said, a grin spreading across his face. The words seemed to put Newt at ease, and a small, grateful smile appeared on his lips.

Davina's smile mirrored Newt's. It was moments like this that made her happyโ€”seeing Newt finally being recognized for the thoughtful, knowledgeable person he truly was.
