The holidays had been uneventful for Davina Dumbledore. She had spent a quiet Christmas with her uncle and dad, nothing too remarkable to note.
Now, as the break came to an end, she was making her way back to the common room with her suitcase in hand.
Just as she was about to enter, a hand suddenly yanked her away. She gasped, spinning to see what had happened.
"Hello to you too," Davina muttered sarcastically, still struggling to keep up with the person pulling her along. Her eyes scanned the corridor, trying to make sense of the sudden disruption.
To her surprise, it was Newt, her friend. He was usually the anxious type, often lost in his own thoughts, but today he was nearly franticโwalking too quickly, glancing over his shoulder as though trying to make sure no one was watching.
"I-I need to show you something," he stammered, his voice tight with nerves.
"Newt, slow down," Davina called, slightly irritated but also curious. She was barely able to keep pace with his hurried steps.
Without a word, Newt darted toward the stairs, his grip tightening on his brown leather case as if it might slip away. He led her up to a secluded tower, a spot they had used before for their secret talks. Once inside, he seemed to relax a little, though his hands still trembled slightly.
"Spit it out, Newt," Davina said, her voice filled with both annoyance and intrigue. She could see the nervous energy radiating off him.
Newt scratched the back of his neck, his eyes darting around as if he were unsure how to begin. "It's... It's hard to explain," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Davina sighed and placed a hand gently on his arm. "Newt," she said softly, "you can tell me."
But when she touched him, she could feel his pulse quicken, and his cheeks flushed with a mix of nerves and something else. It only made him more anxious.
"IโI could show you, though," he said shyly, offering her a tentative smile. "If you want."
Her curiosity piqued, Davina nodded. "Alright. Show me."
With a deep breath, Newt knelt down and opened his leather case. Inside, there was nothing but inky blackness. Davina raised an eyebrow in confusion.
Newt stepped into the case without hesitation, one leg vanishing into the darkness, then the other. "What are you doing?" Davina asked, her confusion growing.
He looked back at her, eyes gleaming. "Do you trust me?"
Davina paused, studying him for a moment before answering, "Of course I do."
A smile flickered on Newt's face, and with a quick motion, he fully disappeared into the case. "Then follow me," he called from inside.
Davina stood frozen for a second, staring at the black void. Her heart raced as doubt crept in. The idea of climbing into that case seemed... off, somehow.
Just as she was about to second-guess herself, Newt's head popped back out of the case, startling her. His wide eyes were filled with impatience, but the way he beckoned her made it clear that this was no time for hesitation.
"Come on, Davina. I promise it's worth it."
With a deep breath, she stepped forward, determined to trust her friend.
Davina carefully watched her steps as she descended the ladder, sinking deeper into the case. At the bottom, Newt was already waiting, his eyes gleaming with pride and excitement.
When Davina's feet finally touched solid ground, she turned to face him. His smile stretched wider as he saw the awe on her face.
She took a slow, appreciative look around. The space was exactly as her father had describedโa small, wooden hut with a desk cluttered with papers and scattered notes.
Each one was filled with observations and sketches of magical creatures. On the walls, drawings of the creatures were accompanied by detailed notes, each one bringing them to life in a way that made her heart race.
Davina's eyes widened in amazement.
"They're not as good as your sketches," Newt said, a bit sheepishly, "but I find the drawings help me remember the notes better."
She smiled softly, taking in the scene before her, her mind spinning with curiosity. Newt gave her a moment before turning to a door behind him, his fingers brushing over the knob with a playful grin.
"Come on," he said, stepping outside. "I-I'll show you the magical part."
Davina hesitated for a moment, but followed him, her curiosity outweighing her hesitation. As soon as she stepped through the door, her breath got caught in her throat. The world outside the hut was like something out of a dream.
The area was alive with creaturesโsome playful, some curiousโeach in their own little territory that mimicked their natural habitats.
Trees dotted the landscape, and each corner seemed to hold a new wonder. The creatures watched her intently, some cautiously, others with outright curiosity.
Newt stood beside her, his smile growing as he watched her taking in the sight. She could hardly process everything at once, but her eyes shone with pure wonder.
A small, white creature approached her cautiously. It looked like a tiny monkey with wide, round eyes that locked onto her with an intensity that made her pause. It was unlike anything she had ever seen.

"That's Dougal," Newt explained softly, "He's usually shy around strangers, but he seems curious about you."
Davina stood frozen, her heart racing at the creature's gaze. She had never felt so captivated by a magical being before. Newt watched her closely, a bit worried. She had been silent for longer than usual, but her eyes told him everything he needed to knowโshe was overwhelmed, enchanted.
"This is..." Davina trailed off, struggling to find the right words. "This is incredible."
Newt's smile softened, his chest swelling with a quiet pride. "They really are beautiful, aren't they?" he said as he watched Dougal go back to his usual routine.
"They're amazing," Davina whispered, her eyes lingering on each of the creatures. There were only five, but to her, they were the most extraordinary beings she had ever seen.
Newt nodded, clearly touched by her response. "I have to thank you for that. Without the case, none of this would be possible."
A sudden, sharp screech broke the silence, and Davina turned just in time to see a Hippogriff approach her. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the majestic creature's gleaming feathers and piercing eyes.

She gasped, reaching a tentative hand toward the creature. It sniffed at her fingers, then nuzzled her gently as if to greet her. She couldn't contain her awe.
"Where did you find him?" she asked, her voice filled with wonder.
Newt's gaze softened as he looked at the Hippogriff. "My mother gave him to me. He was injured, and she thought he needed someone who could care for him." His voice was quieter now, tinged with a hint of sadness, as he stroked the creature's feathers.
Davina stepped closer, her heart swelling with compassion for the creatureโand for Newt, who had saved him.
"Thank you, Newt," she said, breaking the silence between them. Her voice was sincere, full of gratitude. "Thank you for sharing this with me. It's like a dream."
Newt's heart fluttered. Seeing her so at peace among his creatures, her joy so pure, made this world feel even more magical than it already was. For him, it was more than just a collection of creatures; it was a place where he could finally share his world with someone who truly appreciated it.
And in that moment, with Davina smiling at him and the magical creatures surrounding them, it felt like a dream to him, too.
