xii. silent whistle.
"OKAY, GOD OF TRAVELERS. What kind of car does a god of travelers drive?" Daphne shrugged, "Hey, maybe one of these." She said, pointing to an old brown car. "Nope. I don't think so." Percy shook his head as they kept walking.
"Guys, i gotta say, so far, this quest is really exciting." Grover said making percy and pandora look at him, "I really do hope we find that car." Annabeth looked at him, "Finding the car isn't our quest." Leah leaned forward, glancing at all of them. "There's more?" Midas, Percy, Pandora and Annabeth eyed each other and sighed. "Jeez. We'll explain it to you on the way. We're in a bit of a hurry."
"We're late?" Grover asked, as the others walked ahead, leaving him, Pandora and Percy behind, "Very, very late." Pandora nodded, grover turned to them, his mouth opening and closing. "A—Are we late because of me?" He questioned and the trio stop, Pandora and Percy shared a look before Percy places his hand on Grover's shoulder. "It's okay. We're gonna be okay."
"Although," Percy sighed. "I hope that game you were playing was amazing." A smile grew on grover's face, "I was hunting for pan." The two siblings nodded, a small smile on their faces. "No — No, i mean, like i actually felt i was about to find him. That — That i'd be the first. That i'd help save the natural world. It just felt so real." Percy and Pandora's brows creased.
"Guys!" Annabeth and the others stand besides a yellow taxi. "Hermes drives a cab?" Percy inquired, they start walking towards the car, Annabeth held a letter in her hand, looking down at it. "And left us a note."
"How do we know that's for us?" Annabeth showed them the letter, 'To the Dumb Kids.' "Huh. Seems about right." Percy nodded, Annabeth started to open it. "Should've known the god of thieves noticed his pocket getting picked." Leah shrugged, slightly agreeing. "Back door to the underworld, magic word, map in the glove box. And he says we'll become travelers once we're on the road. And then the car will take us wherever we wish to go."
"So, one of us just has to drive it out of the garage." They all turned to the oldest out of the group, "Oh, we're still not 100% sure what we're doing here, which seems disqualifying."
"Yeah," Percy paused, "Yeah, sure, i mean..i killed the minotaur on my first try, right? How hard could this be?"
"Leave it to him to leave me out of everything." The daughter of zeus muttered.
The cab crashed straight into a column, "My fault. That was me. How do you make it go backwards?" The cab reverses into another column. "Okay. Percy, switch spots." The boy turned to his sister. "What do you mean switch spots?"
"I mean, get the hell out of the front seat!" She said, glaring at him, "I'm not getting out of the front seat." He retorted, staring at her with the same glare. "Get out!" Percy shook his head, the others in the cab shared looks then sighed in annoyance. "Hey, how about we —" The siblings turned to her sharply, then said. "Shut up, daph!"
The girl raised her hand in surrender and leaned back into the chair, "Get out! You're literally going to break the car." Percy rolled his eyes, turning back to his sister. "And you think you won't?" He argued.
"Get out." The two glared at each other before percy opened the door and got out, Pandora did the same and daphne looked at leah. "Jeez, what's wrong with those two?"
"They have problems." Midas said, percy climbed in besides him, Pandora sat in the front seat and put the car back in drive, She gripped the wheel and the car jolted forward, slowly moving. A car pulls in front of them making her press the breaks immediately, Percy looked at the car that drove by in shock and leaned forward, "That guy didn't even slow down!" He glanced at the horn before pressing down on it multiple times. "Hey, hey!" Pandora swatted her brother's hand away.
"This is exactly why i didn't let you drive, you idiot!" Pandora pushed him back into his seat, "We could've gotten into a very bad accident." He crossed his arms and leah raised her hand. "I second that." Annabeth looked at Pandora. "Okay. Keep going. Up to the street."
The cab shutters forward, It slowly moves through the parking lot eventually coming to a stop, Pandora stared at the gentle curve ahead of them, "It's okay. You've got this." She nodded slowly, "Right, Right. I got this." Daphne leaned up and patted her shoulder.
"Don't overthink it, dory. Think about mario kart." The girl nodded again, the car moved forward, reaching the turn, pandora pulls lightly at the steering wheel. The cab slowly navigates the corner. The group share smiles. Ahead of them was a straight exit ramp.
Pandora eyes widened as the car scraped the wall and takes off the wing mirror, She peels away, knocking over the central divider, Pandora realigns as the cab crashes through an exit barrier. A truck drives toward them. "Holy shi —"
The cab screeches to a stop, They scan their surroundings, realizing they're at a beach. "Where are we?" Percy asked, looking around at the group, "Turn off the lights." Pandora looked back down and clicked off the headlights. They hop out of the car, into the pouring rain. They walked in front of the car. "Percy, dory, guys, wait. You.. You guys are my best friends."
"I wouldn't say best friends." Daphne muttered and stretched, "Little weird that we forgot a lot more stuff than you guys did. Wonder what that's about."
"We weren't alone. It's easy to forget what's important when you're alone."
"Okay, but we weren't alone."
"No, we were. You got distracted and went to get some food, grover disappeared and i lost both of you." Leah said, looking at the two of them. "Okay? I was hungry." Daphne defended herself, "You're always hungry." The others said in sync and she made a face.
"I think i gotta go meet my dad now." Percy looked toward the water, "We'll be here when you get back." Percy swallows and moved toward the water before pausing, "What do i say to him?" Pandora shrugged.
"I don't know but, tell him i said, if a war comes, beat zeus for me —" Annabeth turned to her, the girl shut her mouth and turned away. "You'll know." Percy smiled at midas and glances once more at his friends before moving toward the water, he slowly stepped into the water before completely being emerged in the water.
Percy opened the door, holding it open for his sister before he let it shut behind them. They glanced around the store that was filled with different types of beds, after a moment, they walked deeper inside. "This is.. creepy.." Pandora muttered, staring at the beds. "It's so — flat." She goes to touch it but percy swats her hand away.
"Welcome, weary travelers! Come on in and take a load off. These beds will change your.." The man paused, staring at the two demigods. "Life. Well.. hello there. Missing our mommy, are we?"
"I know who you are. Your procrustes. Son of Poseidon, and murderer of travelers."
"And owner of weird beds." Pandora glanced around at the beds again, "Crusty, please." The man pads toward the two demigods. "And you.. you've got dad's eyes. Take a load off. Relax for a minute." He gestures to the beds, after he studied percy for a bit.
"The beds are a trap. That's how you do it. How you murder your guests." Crusty looked at him in an offensive manner, pointing to himself. "I do?"
"I know there's a secret passage to the underworld here. I know you were left here to guard it. But i need you to let us through. Please?" Percy said, the man tilted his head and looked away. "I mean, he said please." Pandora shrugged, the man turned away.
"In addition to being incredibly comfortable, these beds are great. For your self-confidence." Pandora and Percy followed behind him slowly, "We're really not interested —" Crusty turned back to them. "They show you how to fit. Fitting's not easy for people like us, am i right?" Crusty comes closer to the two, "Our parents make it so hard. Stretching us and twisting us and hacking off pieces to make us seem more like them." Crusty placed his hands on their shoulders, Percy shared a glanced with his sister. "Anywho.. These beds take all that away."
A bad jiggles under his palm, "With these beds, you just...fit." He made a gesture with his hands. "Try it. I think you'll feel much better." He grins at Percy and Pandora, who stared lips parted at the waterbed. "You first."
Crusty falls onto the bed, the comforter wraps itself tightly around him. The air shimmered as Annabeth took off her hat, "You okay?" She asked, turning to them,
"Yeah, we're fine."
"You won't save them. You won't the first to try bringing someone back from the underworld. You won't be the first to fail." Percy and Pandora looked at each other, "Hey! You're lucky we're letting you keep your head, dummy. Don't push it."
Midas came from behind Annabeth, appearing from the shadows. "Are you guys done? Daph keeps complaining —" Said girl peaked her head through the door with leah and grover behind her. "Can you guys hurry up?"
Later, the group stands in front of a door that read 'Do Not Enter', They stared at it then Percy looked at the others. "Are we sure this is the right way?" Daphne stepped forward, pushing the door open. She caught a whiff of a rotten smell from the darkness on the other side. "Definitely." She muttered and stepped back.
"It's either the realm of the dead, or someone left a carton of milk in there in the 1990s." Grover said, backing up slightly as he held his tiny horn. Looking around the office, Annabeth finds a small red ball and hands it to grover. He squeezes it, "Better?" The satyr looked up from the ball. "Much."
"This is scary. Glad we never been down there, am i right?" She nudged midas, who glanced at her. "If we did, we would've probably been used to it." The girl shrugged. "If we get into trouble.." Percy pulls out a set of pearls, Pandora leaned in, looking at the pearls closely. "These are our tickets out."
"No one's turning back till we all back back." Midas said, patting Percy's shoulder, "No one comes back." Crusty yelled, from behind of them making everyone turned toward the sound of his voice. "Dude! Don't make me come back out there."
"We have no idea what's down there. I just think it's safer if i'm not holding them all."
"Percy's right, For once." The boy glanced at his sister, wondering why he always catches strays, Annabeth looked at Pandora before everyone slowly took a pearl from percy's hand, leaving three pearls in the boy's hand. "Let's go get your moms."
"Are they hot? Would be a bonus if they are." Daphne said to Percy as they walked through the door, "Ignore her, please." Midas said from besides Annabeth, both of them in front of the group. "Um, guys. What if i lose my pearl? Would i die down here?" Pandora said anxiously, "I mean, if the pearl could've come back like my ring, everything would've been fine." Percy walked besides her, patting her head. "Stop doing that." She muttered, swatting his hand away.
Percy and Pandora stare dead ahead at the seats in front of them. "Well, we're not in kansas anymore." Their mother, sally said as she stared at the school in front of her. "What?" The two kids glanced up at their mothers confusedly, Their mama, Fleur, turned toward them with a small smile. "We never showed you that movie? Ah."
"I meant, we are only an hour from the city and it feels like we're on a different planet. It's so.. peaceful —"
"We're not going." Percy said, looking back at the seat in front of him, Blinking, sally purses her lips, She looked at the two kids from the view in the rear-view mirror. "We discussed this. This is gonna be really good for you two. Dr. Higgins says this is the best school, the best program in the state for kids with learning differences, okay? We were very lucky to get in."
"We're not going." Percy repeated and Fleur sighed, turning back around, "Percy, Dory, i know that you don't want to do this, but sometimes mommy and i have to make choices that you may not understand." She stated, staring at both of them.
"We're not going!"
"Sally —" Fleur sighed heavily and followed the woman out of the car quickly, The door closed and Percy looked at Pandora, watching as she locked her side, Percy did the same just Sally tried to open Pandora's door. "Pandora!" The woman said in frustration, Fleur tried percy's door but it was no use.
"This is not a negotiation. The only question is how ugly you two are gonna make it before we say goodbye. Now, open the door." Pandora threw her head back, "Fine!" Percy yelled before unlocking his door, his sister reluctantly doing the same.
"Grover, hurry up." The satyr looked at them before darting toward them, they all stood behind rocks, looking out at the vast plain, an ethereal glow tinges the clouded sky, a dense fog rests at the base at a huge wall that seemed to go on forever. "Not in kansas." The two jacksons muttered. Midas and Annabeth turned to them. "Hey, focus. We left kansas four days ago."
Percy and his sister shared a look. "Yeah. No, it's a.. Never mind." Pandora pursed her lips and looked on at the wall again. "We need to start coming here more, don't we?" Midas glanced at daphne with raised brows.
"I think i'll pass."
"Guys, is that who i think it is?" Leah asked, as grover continued to squeeze the ball Annabeth gave him. They watched as a hooded figure, surrounded by the mist walked toward the wall, a line of people following.
"Charon, the boatman, taking new arrivals across the River Styx. Which means that over there is the main gate. Let's go. Maybe we can get there first." Grover starts to move, the ball squeezes rapidly. "Why don't you let me hang on to that for now?" He hands annabeth the ball and they all stood up, moving toward the wall.
"Excuse me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry." Percy muttered as the seven push through a crowd of people, "I'm sorry. Sorry. Excuse me. Excuse me." Pandora and Percy led the group as they continued to push through them.
"This seems so wrong." Pandora made a face, "Nah. Only suckers wait in line." She shrugged, "You know, you should really spend time in the city with us. I think you'd learn a lot." Percy said, looking back at grover and the others. The siblings come face with charon, his black coat hides his face in shadow. "You're not dead." Percy glanced behind at the others before lifting his shoulders in a shrug. "I mean.. we're all dying.. to some extent."
Charon glares, holding a wooden staff he walks away with a sigh, "And you didn't pay to cross." The others looked at each other quickly and followed him. "Wait! We — we can pay! We can pay!" Grover unzipped the backpack taking out the drachmas before zipping it back close. "Here. Drachmas. Just take.. take, uh.. Just, you know, take them all." Charon blows a whistle.
"So.. no money?" Midas questioned, "Um..you can buy a new whistle." Leah said from behind, after not hearing the whistle blow loudly. Pandora's eyes widen as they hear a loud growl, she slowly back up, hearing giant footsteps approaching. By the time everyone decided to turn and run, Pandora was already gone, "Hey! Dory!" The girl didn't look back as a giant three-headed dog appeared from the wall.
It lunges at grover, swallowing him whole. "Oh, my god!" They group split up, Percy and Daphne behind Pandora as Annabeth, Midas and Leah went the other way. The giant dog fell to the ground with a loud thud.
Eventually they stopped, turning around towards the growling and snarling, They slowly pulled out their weapons, Pandora glanced at her finger where her ring was supposed to be only to find it gone, she then patted her jean pockets then realized annabeth still had her ring.
She pursed her lips then she and percy glanced at Daphne's dagger that was black with undertones violet, shadowy mist drifting off the edge. "Where'd you get that from?" Percy asked incredulously. "My mom. She gave it to me long ago but..i don't know how to use it, or cast any spells for that matter." Percy and his sister shared a look before watching as the dog steps lazily from the fog, panting.
"Okay..?" The trio furrowed their brow as the dog happily sways, they spot Annabeth, Midas and Leah clinging to the dogs neck, "Um. Okay." The dog slumps to the ground, yawning before closing its eyes and resting its heads. Percy and Daphne put their weapons away and stares at the dog, a bulge appears in one of its three mouths. They watch wide eyed and mouth agape as Grover pushes past the dogs lips, soaked in saliva, the satyr scrambles free and stood up.
"Eugh." Pandora made a face, "How did he get in there again?" She asked, as Percy and Daphne's shoulders ease in relief. "Well, you would know if you didn't leave us like that." She glanced at them. "I wasn't going out that way." Pandora shrugged and stuffed her hands in her pocket.
"You.. are a bad... bad dog!" He exclaimed, pointing to the dog, "Guys! We can't hold this forever." Percy and Pandora look toward the other three who were still scratching the dog. Percy glances between the wall and grover. "Can you fly us up there your shoes? And daph —" Percy paused, looking around for the girl.
"Guys!" They looked up at the wall, seeing her wave at them. "Guess she teleport too." Pandora muttered as Grover looked up at the tall wall. "You can do this. One at a time. Take percy first."
"Maia."
"Annabeth!" Pandora yelled, "And..the others!" The girl glanced down, after hearing the dog growl, "Guys!" They all stare into the misty clouds beneath them. Percy catches the red ball and he squeezes it, they look back down, before quickly stepping back as the dog snaps up at them, narrowly missing before falling back down into the mist. "Jeez." They then peak over the edge, spotting the other three hanging on to the wall.
They lean down, grabbing Midas, Annabeth and Leah's hands and pull them up, "Excuse me." Annabeth walks past them, The others share a look before walking toward her as she holds the ball over the edge, she hurls the ball which plops into the gray waters in the river, the group watched the dog run along the river bank, jumping giddily as it goes. "He's actually kind of cute."
"Wow. That was really.." Percy and Pandora turned, glancing to the other side of the wall, "I mean, how did you.." Daphne followed behind the siblings, "My father had a dog when i was little. I guess i remember the tricks."
"Holy moly." Daphne voiced, making the others turn toward her, percy and pandora. "Look at that." A pointed structure hangs upside down in the distance, "Hades's palace. That's where he'll be keeping the master bolt. And your moms." Midas turned to Percy and Pandora, "Oh, no." He runs his hands through his pockets. "What?"
"My pearl. I lost the pearl." The group search around, looking for it. "I think it's.." He froze in place, and the other demigods looked at him. "It's in the dog." Daphne threw her head back with a quiet groan.
"What are we gonna do?"
"I don't know. But if we don't move, it is not gonna matter. Come on."
