ii. our besy friend is.. half donkey?

DARKNESS blankets percy and pandora as they stand on another worldly plane. Lightning flashes above them, before them, a dense fog lingers in the air.

An orange light glows weakly in the mist.

Percy and pandora stared as heavy rain soaks them completely, the orange light brightens as it nears.

"Who are you?" The voice rasped. "So weak. So scared. So sad. Run away, little heroes, before you get hurt." Holding a lantern a figure steps from the haze.

Percy and pandora jerked awake, "We're here." Sally wipes her cheeks and smiles. "On three?" The woman grinned at the two. "Ready?"

"One, two.." Sally laughed as both of them quickly exited the car before she said three.

Two candles sit on a near by dining table, beyond the table, sally stands at a kitchen counter with her back to percy and pandora.

Percy taps her shoulder then he and pandora stands on her other side, they smile as sally chuckled, "I found the good marshmallows. Ones that don't burn so easy." She said.

"I don't think it was ever the marshmallow's fault. we weren't paying attention." Sally looks up, fixing her gaze on her kids.

She turns to face percy and pandoras, their eyes shift as they worked their mouths, "Mom.." The chorus then looked at each other. "We need to talk to you about something."

Sally tucks her lips and straightens her back.

Later, they sit in a living room, the warm light of a fire flickers over them. "We're used to feeling weird. We're used to the world feeling weird to us. Like a puzzle with half the wrong pieces." Percy started.

"We try to pay attention. We really try, but.." He paused, "Then we're daydreaming. We can't help it." He looked at the fire. "But lately.."

"It hasn't felt like daydreaming. It's felt..i don't know. More real, maybe?" He looked at sally then back at the fire. "Then we were at the museum and.."

"You saw something." Gazing into the flames, percy and pandora nods, "Something that felt real to you, but no one else could see?" Their lips tensed then they nodded again.

Sally wraps an arm around her kids, "What did she say to you?" Pandora went to answer but paused, she and percy looked at each other then back at their mother.

"She? How did you know it was a she?" She questioned, sally's head hangs back, she closes her eyes and winces, "Do you know why we come to this cabin every year?" She asked.

"Because it's near the septic tanks, so it's cheap. Mom, how did you know about the thing we saw?" Percy asked, "We come to this place every year because this is the place i met your father." She locks eyes with percy.

Pandora looking back and forth between them, "My dad? What does my dad have to do with this?" Percy questioned, sally smiles thinly, she places her hand on percy's cheek, rubbing it with her thumb.

"A long time ago, i...met a man, here on the beach. He was wise and brave and kind and...noble. From the moment i first saw him, i knew that..that i had never met a man like him before. And then i realized he was unlike any man i had ever met before.." Percy moved his gaze to pandora then the fire in front of them.

Mouth agape, she looks at the ceiling, "Because h..he wasn't a man at all. He was god." Sally's chest heaves as she looks at percy and pandora

The two furrowed their brows and stares back, "So let me get this straight...you fell in love with god? like.." pandora paused, "Like—like jesus?" Percy finished.

"Not god. A god. Percy, dory.." She cleared her throat and shuffled closer to them. "The stories...that me and your mama have told you about greek gods and heroes and monsters, they are real." Pandora shook her head.

"Mom—"

"In those stories, we have told you about how gods and mortals would sometimes have children together.."

"Mom, please, stop. Mom!" Percy looked away from her, "Children called demigods.. and sometimes they are known as half-bloods." The two kids turned to her.

"That's what the monster called us. Mom, what's happening?" Percy questioned.

"You are half-bloods. And half-bloods are not safe in the world. Once they reach a certain age and they begin..to understand what they are, terrible forces are drawn to them," The two shook their heads. "Driven to harm them before they can become strong enough to fight back. That is what you have been feeling."

"It has always been a part of who you are, it was always coming, i just—"

"Why are you telling us this?" Pandora questioned, she couldn't think, it was too much for her. How could this even happen to her, she and percy couldn't have had the same father.

"Percy, dory, i know that this is hard to understand, but you have to believe me that this is real." Percy shook his head and stood up. "No, this is crazy. Okay? We are not gods." He gestured to himself and pandora.

"There is something wrong with our brains. I understand that we're weird, believe me, i get it. But i'm afraid something may be really broken now." He said, his voice low, sally reaching forward.

"Oh, baby, no—"

"And—and now you're telling us stories, like it's gonna make it okay? Well, we're not babies! We know there's no such thing as monsters, we know there's no such thing as gods, and we know for certain that there is no such thing as demigods." A knock on the door turned all three heads. "Who's there?"

"Mrs. Jackson? It's grover." Pandora stood up and looked at percy, "Grover?" They chorus, sally stood and made her way to the door, "This is a little time sensitive. Could someone maybe open the door?" He asked.

"What is he doing here?" Percy questioned, "We don't wanna see him. Wait, mom—" Sally opens the door, "I asked you to have the night, you said we could all leave in the morning." Percy and Pandora shared a confused look.

"Sorry, i'm early, but i didn't have any choice. Things have changed, this is all developing a lot faster than we anticipated." He rushed out.

"Early?" Percy and Pandora said in sync.

Grover enters, "You should have asked us before you—whatever it is you're gonna say. I don't wanna..hear it." Percy trailed off, he and pandora staring at what was supposed to be human legs. "Grover?"

"Percy, Dora." He nods to them then turned back to sally, "Okay, so something's coming.." Pandora shook her head, silently slapping herself, trying to wake up from what seemed to be a dream. "Grover."

"And i know that sounds really bad.."

"Grover?" Percy called again, "This is a dream, totally a dream." Pandora muttered, the slapping didn't work, she pinched herself, which also didn't work. "But the important thing is not to panic."

"I'm not panicking." Sally shook her head, "Grover!" Percy exclaimed. "Great! I'm also definitely not panicking. I feel very good about how we're doing so far—"

"Grover!" The two yelled, "What?" Grover turned to them, "Grover, why is there half a donkey in your pants?" Pandora questioned, "Goat!" He stomped his feet—hoove thingy. "Goat..right, sorry."

"She didn't tell you about..." He looked like he wanted to say more but he decided against it and looked at sally, "You didn't tell them about me?" He asked.

"You're early." Grover turns back to pandora and percy, who stares, head tilted at his legs, "So the important thing is not to panic." He repeated what he said to sally.

"We'll continue this in the car. Let's go." Sally walks between them, looking at percy and pandora, grover shrugs.

"My job has been to guide you to this very moment. It's always an emotional rollercoaster for a young demigod. so providing a support system is really—"

"Who are you?" Percy asked, grover who was right next to him in the back seat, looked at him. "I'm grover. I'm your best friend and—"

"What are you?" They looked at pandora, Grover removes his hat, revealing small horns. "I'm a satyr. And your protector."

"You're our protector?" Pandora questioned, she and percy felt like they're been his protector all those years at yancy academy, "If i hadn't gotten you kicked out of school—" The girl's eyebrows furrowed. "You'd have never survived the night. And what's chasing us now would have found you easily."

Percy and pandora share a look before they turn away from him, "I'm sorry. Usually, i can sense danger coming a mile away, but this time..well, none of us saw dodds coming." Percy looks back at their friend.

"So you knew." He said, "That thing that dodds turned into, you saw it happen? Why didn't you say anything?" Percy asked, pandora shaking her head and fidgeting with her fingers, staring out on the road.

"I saw some of it. The mist kept her hidden even from us until it was too late." Grover explained, "Mist? What's a mist?" Percy questioned.

"The mist." He corrected. "It's the veil that hides the magical world from the human world. My legs. Dodds' wings. Even dodds' absence, but it isn't supposed to hide things from me. That never happens. Something powerful is at work here."

"The sooner we get you to camp, the better off you're.." Pandora snapped out of her daze and turned to grover.

"You told them about camp, right?" Grover leaned forward, looking at sally. "Not yet, no." The woman sighed.

Pandora and Percy looked at sally where she quickly looked at them then back at the road, "Camp is a sanctuary for half-bloods." The two gazes didn't move from their mother.

"A safe space where you can learn who you are and what the world is like on the other side of the mist. Uh, it's not far, actually, just a little ways past the bend up there." Grover pointed.

"Mom, what else haven't we talked about?" Sally's gaze remains fixed forward, "What else haven't you told us? Did mama know?" Percy continues.

In a flash of blue light, a creature pursues the car, "Is that the minotaur?" Percy questions as they all looked back at the creature. "Once the attacks start, they never let up. Okay? Dodds was just the beginning. He is next. He—he is brutal. He is relentless."

"He is still wearing underpants." Pandora voiced, the minotaur thunders after the car, "The mythomagic cards were training. Everything has been training for what's still ahead of you." Grover explained.

Pandora furrowed her brows, "Ahead of us?" Percy questioned, "Kids." Sally spoke up.

"Yeah?" Percy and Pandora looked at her, "I'm actually 24." The two siblings looked at grover in confusion.

"Hold on, please." Sally said. "Wait, wait, are we just gonna ignore what grover just said?" Pandora questioned.

Emerging from the darkness, the hulking minotaur comes to the side of the car, it growled and percy and pandora gawks as it bashes against the car.

Glass shatters into the car, ahead of them, an oncoming headlights flash, the horn blaring loudly as the minotaur's horn loops around the steering wheel.

Sally tugs at it, she switches gear, the car accelerates tossing the minotaur to the side as they narrowly avoid the oncoming truck, their own car hurtles through the forest.

Grover kicked the back window open and he crawled out with pandora and percy behind him.

Shouldering grover, percy and pandora makes their way to the driver side door, sally emerges. "Is everyone okay?"

"Yeah, we're okay." Percy said, speaking for the both of them, "Okay." Sally groans and pulls out a flashlight, the beam hovers over the wreckage.

"This way!" The four wanders off, backed by the car's shining headlights, heavy rain cascades over them as grover stumbles ahead, he pauses.

In the distance, a line of glowing mist splits the forest, "We're here. That's the boundary. No monsters can cross it. Percy and dory will be safe on the other side."

"Percy and dory will be..' But won't all of us be safe?"
The two kids furrowed their brows, He looked to their mother who steps to grover.

"Grover, i am entrusting you to protect my kids, my only children."

"Don't worry, Mrs. Jackson, Percy and Dory will be totally safe at camp—"

"Swear it." She interrupted, "What's happening?" Percy asked. "Swear it, grover! Keep them safe from anyone or anything that comes for them, that want s to do harm, that looks at them the wrong way. Do you understand me?"

"I swear!" He promised, the minotaur roared in the distance and their head snapped to the shadowy forest, sally breathed heavily and they stared into the darkness.

She turned to her two kids, "I gotta go now, sweetheart, birdie." They looked at her. "Go? what do you mean go?" Percy questioned, "I can't go with you." She stated.

"Why can't you?" Pandora asked, staring at her mom.

"She's human." The three all turned to look at grover who lifts a hand and steps away. "You're gonna need to be brave now."

"Remember what i taught you. Remember the stories me and mama told you. Especially the stories, they will tell.." Pandora shook her head. "No. No way! Mom, we're not leaving you!"

"Pandora! Listen to me." She holds both of their faces.

"You.. are not broken. You are singular. You're a miracle. And you are my children. Hold fast." The two shook their heads.

"Brave the storm. Remember what mama told you, okay? always protect each other. I love you." She smiled at them.

The minotaur roared again and sally gasped, their heads turned to the darkness. "We need to move." Grover stated.

"Give me your coats." The two took off their coats and looked at her, "Why? what are you gonna do?" They handed her the coats. "He smells half-blood, that's what he's tracking, yeah?"

"That's right."

"So if he smells you in two directions at once, maybe i can confuse him, buy us both a little time to get away." Pandora stepped forward. "Mom, please, don't. It's dangerous—"

"Hey! it'll be okay." Percy and pandora shook their heads again, the minotaur emerges from the forest, pushing trees aside as it stomps forward, it rises onto its hind legs and slowly approaches. "That's one big minotaur."

Sally pulls pandora and percy close, kissing their foreheads, "Go! Now!" She sprints off, grover, pandora and percy head toward the boundary, they sprint through the shadows.

The minotaur roared again as they placed grover on the ground, Percy and pandora watched as their mother dodged the minotaur, the car's headlights silhouettes the battling pair, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no—" Pandora and percy rush forward.

The minotaur's long horns knock her down. "Mom!"
They yelled and they watches as the beast lifts her.

"Mom!" Caught in the minotaur's grasp, she vanishes into particles of golden dust, the creature tightens its not empty fist.

Percy and Pandora stared from the shadows with teary eyes, raindrops covering their face. They already lost their mama, now they lost both. Now they're alone.

Grover winces nearby, the minotaur's silhouette turns its head toward them.

Percy and Pandora looks down at the vibrating pens in their hands, they morph into orange and blue glowing swords, "Per— dory! Percy, dory, no!" Grover yelled as the minotaur drops to all fours and charges toward them.

Sword at the ready, percy and pandora rushes to meet it, The siblings and the minotaur glanced off each other and tumble to the ground, Gritting their teeth percy and pandora pushes themselves up and sprints towards the still dazed minotaur.

Their swords bounces off its horn, The minotaur turns and bashes them back, their swords fly, The two crawled toward their swords as the minotaur picked up a boulder and marches towards the two.

Percy and pandora rolled out of the way as it slams the boulder down, The minotaur horn gets tangled into a root and Percy and pandora leaps onto its back, the beast twirls as it tries desperately to grab them.

Percy and pandora clings to its wet fur, The minotaur slams its back into a tree before charging head first into another.

Percy and Pandora swings on the minotaur's shoulders, They then gripped each of its horn and rips it of then stabs it into the minotaur, the beast slumps and turn to ash.

"They must be the ones." They heard a voice.

"Hush, Annabeth. They're waking. Everyone, Give them some space, please. Welcome to camp, Percy and Pandora Jackson." Percy and Pandora's eyes flutter.

"We've been expecting you." The voice fades.
