Chapter 23: A Chaotic Encounter Turns Into Some New Shocking Information

My lips crashed right into Ritz's as my hands found the hem of his shirt, pushing it upward as he squirmed a bit and moaned quietly. His arms were latched around my waist as if he thought I'd pull away if he let go.

Not that I was complaining...

I was pushing his shirt upward, our bodies were so close that it made it difficult.

Just as I was about to push the shirt over his head, the door knob turned and we broke apart as fast as lightning. Ritz grabbed his sketchbook and lifted his knees to where they were in front of his chest, using the sketchbook to hide my lipstick that was on his lips.

My mom poked her head in, "hey Veneer I'm going to the store, you and Velvet are coming with me. Sorry Ritz you'll have to head home."

"Awe c'mon Mom me and Vels are old enough to watch ourselves!" I protested.

She raised an eyebrow, "you really expect me to leave you home alone with your boyfriend? Yeah don't think I couldn't hear you two from downstairs. Kissing noises are not quiet."

I groaned, and I heard a faint chuckle come from Ritz.

"Oof, you're busted." He wheezed.

"Indeed he is." Mom smirked. "Now, Ritz I'm gonna give you ten minutes to go wash that lipstick off, and Veneer, I guess you can reapply yours. Bye."

Ritz was dead silent as my mom shut the door. He glanced at me and I grumbled in embarrassment.

We did as she said and Ritz and Orchid headed off, waving goodbye to us as they headed down the sidewalk. Then, me, Vels, and Mom headed to the grocery store.

We were there for a while, buying whatever we needed, I was grabbing a jug of milk, when suddenly some guy runs right into me backwards and we both toppled over.

"ACK! Hey what the fuck?!" I exclaimed, squinting at the dude.

He squinted back at me, rubbing the side of his head with a groan. "Sorry dude, didn't see yah there."

I stood up, my shirt was completely ruined by the milk that had splattered due to the cap being busted under my weight. Fuck. Now I was gonna have to pay for that... and another one too.

"Well gee, thanks." I said in a pissy tone. "Why in hell were you walking backwards anyways?"

"Uh..." he fidgeted uncomfortably with his hands. "I wasn't."

"Then how come you didn't see me here?" I hissed.

He pushed the bangs that covered his right eye out of his face, revealing the dull grayness that didn't at all match the electric blue one on his left.

"Oh..." I realized. "Sorry."

"It's fine." He muttered, letting his bangs fall back in his face.

"Oh noooooo Veneer what- José?" Mom asks from behind.

I turned and saw her staring, her eyes wide with shock.

"Val?" The guy asks.

What the fuck- only close family calls my mom Val. Nobody else.

Were they friends or something?

"Um- hi. I haven't seen you in a while..." Mom said awkwardly.

"Yeah." José says. "A while. Uh, how've you been?"

"I've been good." Mom bit her lip.

Talk about awkward.

"Um," I cut in, "sorry to break the awkward conversation, but Mom, care to explain how you know this guy?"

"Veneer, this is José, I dated him in highschool." She said, giving me this 'Remember?' look.

"Oh." I said.

Then it hit me.

"OH!" I realized.

Holy fucking shit.

"HOLY FUCKING SHIT."

I glanced at the guy, who looked more confused then I thought someone could look.

"Veneer!" Mom slapped my arm.

"Sorry-" I said.

She huffed. "This my son, Veneer. And I think Velvet's around somewhere-"

As if on cue, my sister came walking up with the cart and a couple tubs of ice cream.

"What are those for?" I questioned.

"Me and Mom are gonna binge Heartstopper tonight." She shrugged, and I nodded.

"Oh, okay."

"This is Velvet, Velvet, this is José." Mom introduced my sister to the guy, she cocked a brow but shook his hand nonetheless.

He then shook my hand, and I was finally peicing it together in my head.

I had to admit, Mom was right. Me and Vels really do look like him.

We had the same electric blue pie-cut eyes, or eye, I should say, same pearly skin, and I could even see that both him and me had similar face structures. Mom had blue eyes too, but they were more of a grey-ish blue than that electric color.

The only thing was that, my mother also had that same lime green hair that me and my sister had, while José's was yellow.

"So how old are you two?" The question pulled me from my thoughts, and I thought desperately for an answer.

Do I tell the truth and say I'm eightteen? Or do I say something else.

"They're fourteen." Mom answered for us.

Velvet rose a brow in confusion, but kept her mouth shut. She knew that Mom always has her reasons for lying. She'd learned the hard way not to question her when she did. And so had I.

And if Mom didn't want to tell this guy who we were, then she has her reasons.

But goddammit, I kinda wanted to know more about him. I wanted to know if he'd gotten married and had another family, or if he was successful, or literally whatever else.

Did we share any similar interests? Or hobbies? Or anything?

And if he did find out, my biggest question was; would he care?

Would he want to know what mine and Vels' lives have been like? Would he want to know whether we were gay, or straight, or whatever else? Would he be interested in getting to know me and Vels?

Would he be interested in being our dad?

My head was spinning, I droned out of the conversation, to deep in thought to keep up with what they were all saying. Jeez I really need to sit down.

"Ven? Veneer?? Veneer are you okay?" Velvet shook my shoulders and my attention snapped to her.

"Huh?" I asked.

"You looked like you were about to topple over." She said quietly. "Are you okay?"

"Uh, yeah." I said. "I'm alright, just... tired."

"Okay..." My sister says worriedly.

"Vels, I'm fine. I was just really deep in thought and kinda zoned out." I rolled my eyes. "You know I do that from time to time."

"Oh, yeah I guess." She murmered.

"Welp, it was good to see you Val." My attention returned to the conversation between my mom and José.

"Yeah," Mom smiled, "it was. Goodbye!"

We walked away, and Mom payed for our stuff, and we left. I could see her biting her lip as she unlocked the car and we all got in.

"Mom, are you okay?" Velvet asked.

"No." Mom breathed. "I can't believe that just happened."

"Well, it did." I said.

"Yeah..." Vels said, and I figured that she'd figured out who that José guy was.

God I hate how complicated my life is.
