While Peter was fighting western invaders and Susan was visiting their southern neighbours, Edmund made his way to Doorn on the largest warship they had. It was a good thing that he and Peter chose to switch places, it took him nearly a month just getting to the Lone Islands. First, he chose to make a stop at Galma, there were some trade negotiations to take care of and he thought handling those in person was the best choice. He got to the island the morning after he had left, for it was relatively close by, and he was welcomed with a feast and a tournament. He participated in both and did very well on the tournament considering all his opponents were older than him.
They found favourable wind after the fourth day and arrived at Terebinthia three days later. There, Edmund was invited to yet another feast by the King, where the Lord of Terebinthia shared proudly the story of how they had fought off Calormen conquerors and remained an independent country. On the sixth day, desirable wind allowed them to set sail to The Lone Islands and they left with their ship full of fresh supplies, and seven days later they finally arrived at Doorn.
He was greeted as one would expect, a large welcome party, islanders cheering and waving as the King of Narnia and his companions rode by. He found the Governor's family, his wife, daughters and son, waiting at the small castle where they resided and they welcomed him cordially. After offering his condolences to Lord Rhom's family he was invited inside.ย Edmund immediately understood that the late Governor's son, Lord Jared, had too much support behind him and that choosing someone else for the job or leaving someone to govern while he and Peter considered who to choose would simply be too problematic. There were contenders for the office, wiser, more experienced Lords who had served under Governor Rhom or who coveted his position and considered Jared too young for the office. But although all of this was true, after spending time with the Lords and hearing their reasoning for why they would make better Governor, Edmund considered they were after the job and the power it came with. Jared, on the other hand, seemed to take it as a responsibility. He wanted the job, not because of all the privileges it entailed, but because he considered it his duty to continue his father's work.
"Lord Jared is the best option," Edmund said to Peridan on the fourth morning since their arrival. He had considered all the options and was ready to make a decision. Jared seemed competent enough, he wasn't dull like some of the Lords, and Edmund found him a pleasant lad.
"But does Your Majesty think it is wise to discard the other Lords? Won't they upset over your choosing the youngest contender?" Peridan asked.
"They very well might, but they'll upset no matter who I choose. And I do believe Lord Jared will make for a good Governor. Titles or gifts should keep the other Lords content, not everyone can have their way. In any case, this is not a hereditary office, if he does not perform adequately, my brother can always dispose of him and choose someone else for the office. Anyway, we should be making our way back to Cair Paravel. We have been away far too long considering the circumstances. With Susan and Peter gone it worries me something might happen,"
Edmund signed some papers, named Jared the new Governor of The Lone Islands, attended the feast and the celebrations and then waited six days to make sure everything was running smoothly before he sailing back to Narnia.
Halfway there, Edmund decided they'd be stopping at Archenland instead of Terebinthia and then go to Cair. He figured maybe his sister was still in Archenland and they could go back together. That and he wanted to visit as many places as he could in this voyage.
It took them the same amount of time going from Doorn to Archenland as it would have taken them going to Terebinthia, but when he got there and inquired about his sister's whereabouts, it was too late. Susan was already in Cair Paravel.
When he docked in the port of Cair he found the lack of a welcoming party disturbing.
"I go out for a month and you already forget me?" He says as he walks into the sitting room. His hair is longer, nearly reaching his shoulders, and his face is a little red, probably due to the sun.
Lucy runs up to her brother excitedly and he picks her up in a hug.
"Edmund! I've missed you," Lucy says as I order a dryad to have the princes brought down.
"Now that's a welcome," He says, putting her down. "I missed you too, Lu. Brought you some presents,"
Next approached Susan and Edmund told her how he went looking for her to Archenland only to learn she was already here.
"Oh, I'm sorry Ed. I came back as soon as I heard the news,"
"You mean..." He turned to look at me and I stood up.
"You're a few weeks too late, Ed," I said walking up to greet him.
"Hey, you're no longer pregnant," he said after kissing my cheek.
"That's right. How did your trip go?" I ask, taking a step back.
"It went well, but never mind my trip, how are you? How's the child? What was it, boy or girl?" he asks as he shakes had with my cousin.
"You'll see soon enough," I say, looking expectantly at the door. He'll think I'm joking if he doesn't see them first hand.
"Where's Peter?" he asks us after he's shaken all the hands and said all the hellos.
"He left as soon as Susan got back," I inform him. "I thought he'd be staying, but there was more trouble so he had to leave,"
"Oh, that's a shame. He must have wanted to stay," he tells me as he takes a seat.
"So who did you choose?" Lucy asks him, handing him a cup of tea.
"Thanks," he says as he takes it and has a sip of it. "I chose Governor Rhom's son. I believe he'll do just fine. Hopefully, Pete will agree with me,"
"I am sure he will," Susan said.
I see the doors open again and my maids came in carrying the boys. "Ah, here they are,"
"They?" Asked Edmun, turning to look behind him.
"This is Edward," I told Ed as I took the baby from Jane. "And that, that is Peter, our firstborn," I say, looking at my other son.
"By the lion! You had two? Two boys?" he asks with a grin.
"I guess I am efficient," I reply, laughing at my own joke.
"Blimey! Congratulations," he says, looking at the newborns.
"They're twins," Lucy says and then everyone stands up to hover around the princes. "Isn't it wonderful, Ed?"
"Wonderful indeed. But they don't look like twins to me. This one's hair is darker,"
"That is because they are not identical twins" Susan adds. "Edward's hair is darker,"
"And his eyes are green," Lucy says, "as oppsed to Peter's whose re more blue,"
"Yes, little Peter looks just like his father," I say, looking adoringly at my firstborn.
"Poor kid," Edmund says.
"Edmund!" Lucy and Susan chastise him, though Lucy is laughing.
"I am only joking," he says, raising his hands in a sign of surrender. "Can I?"
"Mind his head," I tell him as I hand over little Edward.
"Ed and Pete?" he asks with a raised brow.
"I hadn't thought about it that way," I say as I take Peter from Amy's arms.
"Well, I say somebody owes me two horses," Edmund tells baby Edward.
"What do you mean?" I ask him as I take a seat and then everyone sits down as well.
"Do you want to tell her or should I?" Edmund asks Darren.
"Tell me what?" I ask them. What is he talking about? Darren is just staring at his shoes, just as he used to do when uncle Jackson would lecture us after causing trouble.
"We made a bet, Darren and I. And it looks like I won. Twice. Ergo I get two horses," Edmund explains.
"Oi, we never said anything about two horses," Darren protests.
"You two made a bet?" Susan asks disapprovingly. "You are unbelievable,"
"If anyone should get two horses, I think it should be me," I tell the boys. I did just gift the kingdom two princes.
"You already got a unicorn, don't get cocky," Darren tells me.
"Hold on, you have a unicorn?" Edmund asks as he lets Edward play with his index finger.
"A present from James," I explain. He sent it to me along with his congratulations as soon as the news reached him.
"How generous," Edmund says. "Still, you lost Darren. Time to pay up,"
"You get one horse and that is my only offer," Darren says.
"You drive a though bargain, Darren, but I accept your one-horse offer," Edmund says, earning an eye roll from my cousin. He tries to get his finger back, but Edward won't let it go. "Hey there, litle guy. I'm your uncle Ed, your favorite uncle. I'm the fun one, unlike your uncle Darren. He's a little prick, oh yes he is," he whispers to the baby as I resist the urge to facepalm.
"Oi, you're the prick," Darren complains. "Forget that horse,"
"What did I tell you, Edward? A prick," Edmund tells the baby.
"Would you two mind not swearing in front of my children.
"Why? You swear all the time," Edmund tells me.
"I do not,"
"You do and you know it," Darren tells me.
"Well, it's a nasty habit which we should all quit," I tell them both.
"You sound like Susan," Edmund tells me, making Lucy snort.
"Oh, shut up. You're both pricks. Susan, slap his head for me, will you?" I ask as she was part of his joke and is the one siting closest to him.
"Gladly," and goes on to slap the defensless Edmund.
"Oi!" he protests, unable to do anything about it because he's holding Edward.
"Ha!" Darren laughs at Edmund's misfortune so I slap him on the head too.
"Oi! Don't hit me," my cousin protests.
"Then don't be an arse and I won't have to," I reply plainly, making Lucy and Edmund laugh.
"So you said you brought presents?" Lu turns to her brother.
Edmund nods and hands Susan the baby before he stands up and goes to the chest the guards carried in while we were talking. "You're going to love this,"
