The Big Day
It was Olivia's day. I got ready, did my hair and makeup. I watched as I slowly straightening my hair, i can see the spitting image of my father.
"Okay." I whispered as I turned off the tool. I switched my pjs to the purple dress that Ruby and Olivia had chosen for the big day. Jamal texted me that he wasn't going to come to the party. I put on my flats as I opened the door of my room, walking around the empty home. I sighed as I walked to the kitchen and drank some soda before Abueltia came and helped me with the centerpieces.
"Ayy que bontia." She whistled as I let her in.
"Oh stop it abueltia." I gave her a shy smile as I gave her a box of the pieces.
"Ruby is going to be enamorado." I shook my head as we went to the yard and set up the tables.
"Ma! We leaving!" Ruby's mom yelled from the house.
"Ill see you church." I gave her hug and went back home, waiting for Jacky. I heard a honk and I went out running. "How's Willy?" I asked as I got in.
"He's getting better." She sniffs. "In about a week, the doc said you can come to see him."
"I miss him." My voice cracked we had made it to the church. Jacky wiped my tear.
"He's going to be okay mamas." I gave her a hug, crying on her shoulder. She pulls away and takes a good look at me. She wipes off my mascara off my face, and pulls out mascara and does a touch up. "You have fun, be a teenager okay? Just for today."
"Okay." I walked out of the car and saw Ruby and Monse handing out the pamphlets. As Ruby looked up, his jaw dropped.
"Wow." I smiled at the two, grabbing some pamphlets from Monse.
"Thanks." I told him. We stood there, passing out the papers. It was awkward since last night, you know, the Cesar thing.
"Bless you." Ruby said as a guest entered the church. "Can you believe we were here only a few hours ago?"
"When there was hope." Monse huffs.
"Oh, my God!" Ruby yelled, making me jump. I looked at him. "I mean, goodness." He chuckles as the padre stared at him.
"Seriously?"
"What?"
"There's a typo in the program." I rolled my eyes. "Their" is spelled with an e-r-e instead of e-i-r.
Only e-i-r shows possession."
"Really? You think this is a time to grammar troll?" I told him as I smiled at the guest.
"Jamal was supposed to double-check before they were printed."
"Add it to the list. He's a loser." Monse growls.
"Hey! I know you're mad, but try to temper your 'tude today. And be cool when Jamal gets here."
"He's not coming." I told them. "He texted me this morning."
"We're better for it."
"What about Olivia?" Ruby comes in. "Cesar's probably won't show either." I can't believe he did it. Its not Cesar like.
"We don't know that."
"He just killed someone."
"We don't know that for sure." That is true. Ruby and I turned to Monse.
"Monse we know." She just looks away.
"Lover, can I borrow your pocket square?" Jasmine comes in, coughing on me and Ruby. She looks like death! Her eyes, mocos coming out, i stood back, hell nah, I wasn't getting sick.
"Use your hand!" Ruby pushed her off of him.
"I think you need to go back inside." I shyly suggested.
"But away from me." Olivia said, smiling.
"Then where should I go?" She asked us.
"The daycare center." Ruby told her. I elbowed him. "What? Babies are always sick." Jasmine smiles, and the gags. I held my mouth, her gagging makes me want to gag. She grabbed a pamphlet and walks off.
"Have you seen Cesar?" Olivia asked us. We all turned to each other. Nobody was saying anything.
"Not yet." I smiled. "But you know Cesar. Dude takes forever to primp." I laughed it off, but nobody laughed. "Bet he's on his way."
"'Bet he's on his way?"' Ruby smacks my arm. "Why say that?"
"So she wouldn't worry." I told him. "What? You guys weren't gonna say anything."
"But he's not coming. We should've showed her the typo." Ruby held up the paper. I shook my head.
"What's that gonna do?" Monse pointed out.
"Distraction. Some people like taking their mind off what's big by sweating the small stuff.
Jesus Christ!" He looks at the paper again. The man walks by and coughed. "Amen. They're the wrong font. They were supposed to be printed in Palatino, not Helvetica. Now I can't unsee that."
"We gotta tell Olivia." I told them. Monse nods.
"I don't think she'll even notice." Ruby was still hung up on the paper.
"No! About Cesar." Monse yelled. "She needs to know."
"He's not coming." Ruby argued.
"But he's already here." Cesar said, making us jump. His head was shaved off. I closed my eyes. Hes now a santo. He really did kill him. "Give me some of those." He grabbed the paper as we looked at him. All he did was smile. The service started, we took our seats and listened to the long, boring conversation of how Olivia is now a women and christ and you get it. I was nervous, why? Because of Cesar! Ruby held my hand, which made me calm for the rest of the remaining of the service. I helped Rubys parents with the twins while they got everything on the car. When they finished, i put them in their car seats and head to Cesar to tell what the actual hell!
"What the hell!" I slapped his arm.
"What?!" Cesar gave me this look. I knew that look.
"You didn't kill him." He looks down. He grabs me and we hid in the confession room.
"You cant tell Spooky. Not even your brother." I nodded my head. "Hes gone, I couldn't do it."
"If Latrelle's not dead, doesn't that leave you vulnerable?" I told him.
"It's handled. And we never talk about it again.
Now this is Olivia's day, and if I were you, I'd be more worried about those dance steps."
"What are we going to do with you, mano." We both sighed.
"Do you think you can take me to Rubys?"
"Come on." We both waited for Jacky to pull up and dropped us off at Rubys. The ride was silent, and awkward.
"We got a full house." Ruby said as he looks out the window as guest came pulling up. Cesar, Monse, Olivia and I sat on the couch. "You ready to get this party started?" Ruby turns around. "Agh!"
"I think I might have to go home." Jasmine mumbles.
"What's wrong with you?"
"I don't know. I just keep passing out."
"You have to rally. I can wear gloves."
"I'm down with that." She smiles. "It's about to get dirty up in here." She closes her eyes. Ruby looked so scared.
"Jasmine!" He yelled at her.
"Taste my juicy nalga!" We all jumped. "Dos quesadillas por favor." My eyes widen from the fear. She's literally the walking dead.
"Can someone escort Jasmine home?"
"No." We all said. Jasmine grabs Ruby. He takes her to the door, coughing her way there.
"Buenas noches." She left. Abueltia and more guest came with food. Man did it smell good.
"Seรฑoras, Sรญgueme a la cocina." She turns to Ruby. "Mjio, where are going to set up the buffet?"
"On the tables in the back." He pointed.
"But they're not there."
"What? Well, who moved them?" This was so chaotic. My head was spinning. It wasn't even my party!
"A guy told me he needed them." Cesar stands up. "It was the fireworks guy."
"We're having fireworks?" Olivia's face lit up.
"Thank you." Ruby claps. "Thank you, everyone, for spoiling the surprise. Yes, fireworks. At 9:30."
"Someone get his panties out of a bunch." She points at me and she walks away.
"Nothing's spoiled." Olivia walks up to Ruby.
"Oh, no, we're just down a dama and a 2 chambelans. And one of your surprises is ruined." I rolled my eyes as the other one was Carlos.
"One of my surprises?"
"Yes. But that's all I'm giving you until it's spoiled which it undoubtedly will be. This day is cursed. I'm telling you, it's cursed. The only upshot is that our D to C numbers are even again."
"D to C numbers? Is that dick to coochie?" Monse looks at Ruby.
"Get your head out the gutter! Damas to chambelanes. Now Jasmine's out, you get to dance with me."
"My prayers have been answered." Monse rolles her eyes.
"What about Val?" Olivia looks at me.
"No! I mean, im fine, can be in the crowd. Dont worry about me. Ill be fine." I smiled.
"Are you sure?" Ruby asked me, holding my hand. There it was, the butterflies.
"Si." I nodded.
"Everyone, assume your positions." Everyone starts to get ready. "I mean I can tell Monse she's out, if you want to?"
"Ruby." I said as I fixed his tie. "I still don't know the moves, if I have to be honest." I laughed. We both looked at each other. That spark. "Ill save a dance for you later tonight."
"Si mi princesa." We both smiled. I fixed my dress and was about head out to tell everyone to take their seats for the surprise dance. "Wait!" I stopped. Ruby came up to me. He pushed back my hair behind my ear. "There, perfect. You always look perfect." I turned red. I placed my hand in his cheek. I was about to lean in but I stopped.
"Thank you." I turned around and went outside.
