Halloween
"Tell me later when I get to Rubys, okay."
I told Jamal on the phone as I walked into my house. Supposedly he's got a lead on Rollerworld and now Ruby's grandma is in it to. I know Rollerworld is true. I went to my room and started to change into my costume. I put on some makeup and left to go to Ruby's. I walked right in, Monse dressed as a lifeguard, Cesar was dressed as someone from Greece, Jamal, a injured person, and Ruby was dressed as a vampire.
"Hey guys!" I greeted everyone as I stepped in. Rubys eyes grew and pulled a pillow close to him.
"That looks nice." He mentioned.
"A witch, it suits you." Cesar laughs,
"At least I'm wearing something from my closet, not from my bedset." I told him. Cesar glanced at me. I got him. Ruby patted a seat next to him and I sat next to him. Olivia comes out and smiles.
"So, when are we going out?" She asked.
"Never. Trick-or-treating in Freeridge is a no-go." I told her as she sat on the arm of the couch.
"Why?" Ruby then sighs.
"I'll be brief. In 2012, Prophets rolled up on us. Glocks to our heads and snatched our bags.
2013 we were kissing pavement all night. Caught in a drive-by. That night, we lost our candy and perhaps our innocence." As Ruby was telling Olivia, I was texting Willy about that im at Ruby's, not worry and I'll text him when ill be at home. I was ignoring everything around me. "Scary movies, artisan pizza, and most of all, new experiences."
"You're right. We should go out. I'm feeling like this could be our last Halloween trick-or-treating. And frankly, it's feeling a little cramped in here. You feel me?" Monse said. I put away my phone and started to listen,
"I vote for Brentwood." Jamal threw out, looking at his phone. "It's safe, rich, and I bet they've got full-size candy bars." I nodded my grad Ruby.
"Shut-ins are tradition. And I ordered the pizza. Did I mention it's artisanal?" Ruby was freaking out, why though?
"Why can't we go somewhere else?"
"Brentwood." Jamal whispers,
"There's gotta be other places."
"Brentwood." Jamal kept saying.
"How about Brentwood?" I asked.
"I'm down. Good call, Val." Jamal smiled and I smiled back
"It's a bad call." Ruby complained,
"It's a great idea." I said as I grabbed his hand.
"It's just Brentwood's super far and we would have to take public transpo, - which sucks." Here we go, typical Ruby, making excuses.
"You've never been on the train." Cesar called out.
"Sorry, guys, but I don't know how we'd even get there." Ruby shook his head.
"All good." Jamal said as he jumped on the couch. "I got us a hook-up." I laughed.
"See Ruby! Its all good!" I still wad grabbing his hand. When we both noticed, we both turned red. The person that Jamal said was the hook up was actually Ruby's grandma. We drove all the way to Brentwood. We all got off and we all looked at the houses.
"We are not in Freeridge anymore." Monse said as I was stunned.
"In 800 feet, you have arrived." I heard a voice coming from Jamals phone, i know hes up to something.
"No. We've got lots of ground to cover, so to maximize candy efficiency, let's divide and conquer, then split our booty." Jamal suggested. We all agreed.
"Great idea." Ruby finally said after a whole ride of complaining. "Val and I will go this way. Meet back here around 10:00? Later." Ruby grabbed my hand and we walked a few inches, until Cesar and Monse yelled.
"Jamal!" We all turned.
"On second thought, I'll go with Ruby and Val." Cesar said. I wasn't liking what was going on between them.
"On third thought, I should go with Jamal and Monse. Olivia, you go with Ruby and Cesar." I told her.
"Uh, sure." We made our trade and Ruby groaned.
On fourth thought, I think I should go with Val too-" Cesar pulls Ruby back and we head our ways. I felt bad for trading myself like that even though I wanted to go with Ruby. I made the most stupidest decision ever! Monse and I followed Jamal to a house, we basically skipped some good houses giving out king size!
"This is really getting old. We're skipping all the big houses with crazy decorations and you want to hit up Tootsie Rolls." Monse was pissed and was pointing out at the bowl of tootsies. Jamal ignore Monse and rang the door bell.
"What are you doing? Buckets equal self-service." I told Jamal as I grabbed a tootsie roll. The door opened.
"Trick-or-treat!" Jamal smiled at the older women.
"Baby, bucket equals self-service." She told Jamal.
"Happy Halloween." Monse and I smiled and pulled him away but he pushed us off.
"Oh, my God! Did you dance on Soul Train?" Monse and I looked at each other with the most confused look on our faces. What is he up to now?
"What do you know about Soul Train?" She questioned him.
"It was only the dopest dance show ever. I mean, my mama loved it. My mama's mama loved it. And that dance line was the bomb." He was flattering her. What in the world!
"I invented the dance line." She told him
"Wow, that's so cool! But we really should get going." Monse cuts in the conversation and Jamal pushes her back again.
"A legend like you - I bet you've got stories for days."
"Well."
"Damn! Is that a gold record?" We all peaked in her house.
"Mm-hmm." She hummed.
"Would it be too much if I asked for a selfie in front of it? You know, for my mama's mama." Jamal pulls out his phone and begs her. She thought about it.
"Well, we can't keep your mama's mama hanging." They both laughed. I was just creeped out. "Come on." We walked in her house. "And now what you're looking at is the first dancer to have a number one hit." I looked at her records.
"That's dope, Rose." Jamal called her. How in the world does he know her from, really!
"Actually, it's pronounced Ro-say." she corrected him.
"Oh. After your favorite wine?" Monse and I stood behind Jamal as he was asking her questions.
"No. After this other bitch named Rose started dancing on the Train." Her phone started to ring. "Oh, I'm blowing up." She laughs. Jamal took a quick pic of some photos she had.
"So, what was Don Cornelius like? Child, rest his soul."
"The man was handsy. Couldn't keep his fingers off this jelly."
"Is that why you left the Train for Solid Gold?"
"Oh, no, baby. I left for the green. Plus my moves ain't free. And I was tired of living in a sugar shack."
"So you bought that place in Sherman Oaks." Jamal asked her, just as she was about to answer, she stopped.
"Yeah, I How did you know?" Oh no.
"Where else would a lady baller like you live? I read that it was like the Paris of the Valley back in the day." Jamal i swear to god if I die on Halloween I will haunt you!
"So how'd you get started? Dance school?" Monse asked her, crossing her arms.
"No, more like dance parties. Or any place they played music, like the Florentine Gardens, Osko's-"
"Oh, RollerWorld." Jamal smiled.
"RollerWorld?" Monse and I repeated. Oh my god! He trying to find it! She might have some clues!
"Yeah, you know it?"
"I've heard about it once or twice." Monse angrily glanced at Jamal. Then a timer went off.
"Oh! Time's up. My chili's ready."
"Our time's up too." I said as I grabbed Jamal's arm. "We need to go."
"Baby. Baby, hold up. I'll be right back." She walked away. We all stood there and Monse hit him on the arm.
"RollerWorld? That's why we came to Brentwood? So you could Dateline this shit?Jamal, we're leaving now or I'm gonna kill you." Monse dragged us to the door until we heard a gun clocked. Our eyes popped out and Rosé had the gun pointed at us.
"That's exactly what I was thinking." We all put our hands up. "Are you casing my place? You think I'm a fool? I saw you taking pictures.
And you're asking way too many questions.
You better come correct, boy." Jamal looked at us.
"Don't look at us." I told him.
"If I had a gun, I'd shoot you myself."
Is the RollerWorld heist real? Are the rumors true? Is there still money out there?" Jamal blurted out.
"You want the skinny on RollerWorld? What's in it for me?"
"Anything!" She lowers her gun down.
"Help me with the chili." I sighed, thank god! We all we t to her kitchen. Monse was grating the cheese, Jamal was cutting the onions and I was putting out the bowls. I pulled out my phone every 3 minutes, answering to Willy.
"Is this enough?" Jamal cries out.
"Ooh, perfect. Now, come show these wine glasses some love. How we doing on the cheese? I need you to grate all that. I got the whole block coming for my chili." Rosé was looking through some pictures that she brought out. I was done and I decided to sat down next to her looking at the pictures.
"Damn, I haven't seen these boys in years."
"Who's that playa? - Is he wearing a fishnet crop top?" Jamal pointed out. I giggled as i saw it.
"Okay." We laughed. "Yes. That's Frankie."
"Fine as hell." I said.
"But dumb as dirt, hear? That's why him and Benito Now, Benito's the one with the flavor saver That's why they got pinched for RollerWorld. You don't go flashing green when the blue is onto you. And they loved flashing the green. Even leased me a Trans Am, which unfortunately, was yellow."
"So, he spent all the money?" I asked her.
"Far as I know, there wasn't that much to spend."
"So, there could be more." Jamal whispered.
"Who's that other guy?"
"This one is Lil' Ricky."
"Was he part of the heist too?" Jamal asked. I pulled out my phone again to text to Willy about The Santos.
"No. He was too smart for that."
"But if he was into it-"
"he was way too smart to get busted. They were all so tight. They started the Freeridge Santos." She pointed out.
"You dated a Santo?" Me and Monse said.
"What was that like?" Monse asked.
"Isn't that a little personal?" Jamal told her.
"Said the stalker." Rosé laughs.
"I don't mind. Come on over here, baby. Have a seat. Get the ladies a drink, Jamal."
"Yeah, Jamal. This lady's thirsty. Do You mind if I ask you a question?" They passed me the book and I looked. My eyes stopped at one particular photo.
"Oh, that's-"
"Chico and Celia." I cut her off.
"You know them? Its a shame what had happened to Chico, right in front of his children. Santos were so devastated that day."
"Wait, Val, isn't that-"
"They're my parents." I shed a tear. Rosé grabbed my hand.
"Im sorry baby." I wiped my tear. "Chico was a great man, he really was."
"Wait, was Chico involved?" Jamal asked. "He was a santo?"
"Do you think thats a great time to say that?" Monse punched him.
"No, its fine." I told them.
"Chico was close with Lil Ricky, they were like brothers, so there might be a possibility." I pulled out my phone and took a picture.
"Wait, is this all fall down?" I asked as I laughed it off.
"All fall down, baby!"
"We still do that." Jamal told Rosé. So, RollerWorld Let's just say there was a third person and it was Lil' Ricky."
"Baby, are you still on that? I told you he wasn't involved. Listen, Lil' Ricky was on a higher plane. Hear? He was the one that took the Santos from street hustlers to major players."
"You need a lot of money to do that."
"It was the '80s. All you needed was a short stack."
"So maybe someone kept the rest." I told Jamal as he was taking some notes.
"Anything's possible."
"You two were the cutest couple." I told her as I saw her and Frankie.
"Mm-hmm. You got that right." She gave Jamal her glass. "It ain't gonna refill itself, sweetie."
"You sure you can't stay for the party? You barely even sampled the goods."
"Thanks, Rosé, but we really should meet up with our friends." Jamal told her as we walked out of her house.
"All right."
"You be good, hear?" She gave me a hug. "Come here." I gave her a hug. The greatest hugs i ever had gotten. "Im sorry about your father."
"It's okay."
"When Frankie heard that, he was in tears. Chico meant a lot to the Santos." I let go of her hug. "Im guessing you're in?"
"What?"
"Come on baby, i know. If I were you, tell your mans that you are in."
"My mans?"
"Ruby?" My jaw dropped. "You were on your phone all night, your brother. Tell them before its too late."
"Thanks Rosé." We all walked away and Monse slowly walked. "Monse? You alright?"
"I think I saw my mom." She looked at me and I hugged her.
"Oh Monse."
"Run!" Ruby yelled at he pushed me and Monse.
"Get out of here!" Cesar yelled out.
"Run? - Why? - Why? Ah! Ah!" We got egged. We ran out of there for our lives.
"Back to where you came from! Yeah! And don't come back." We heard behind us.
"You guys, this is all my fault. I let that asshole get the best of me." Olivia said as we started to get egg off of us.
"Don't apologize." I told her. "Its Brentwood, Theres a lot of assholes here."
"We just got to get home."
"Jamal, get a Lyft." Ruby told him.
My dad said Lyft was only for emergencies." Everyone groaned.
"Seriously? What exactly constitutes an emergency? Don't get a Lyft."
"It's handled." Cesar said. He looked at me. Oh no. "It's handled." Spooky shows up a few minutes later and and we went to the assholes house who egged us. That guy was so scared of Spooky that he gave us a ton of candy, and some smoothies. When we got to Ruby's, my phone was blowing up.
Willy💀: is everything okay? Spooky told me. Im going to Brentwood and beat the guy.
Val🙄: Yeah everything is okay. Im gonna stay at Ruby's for a while okay.
Cesar left and Olivia went to her room and Jamal went home. It was just me and Ruby.
"Val, it's still early. You up for Nightmare on Elm Street?" Ruby smiled.
"Sure why not." I smiled back,
"Great. Gonna take a quick shower then we can get our scare on." I laughed as he ran to the shower. I sat on the couch and I looked at my phone, the photo of my father. I miss him so much.
