23. the darkness of Devon Hobbs

Claire came as quickly as possible. She did her scan, she was just surprised to see all the wounds and bruises she had on her body. She didn't know if she should tell Matt. He was kinda busy praying for Devon by her side. He was so miserable and guilty about what happened.
"I have to call her brother." Matt gets up and goes to the room to call. Claire checks Devon's heartbeat and gets startled when Devon grips Claire's arm. Devon's eyes were filled with tears, rage, and fear. Claire tries to calm her down, telling her it's okay.
"I'm Claire, I'm a friend of Matts. He called me." I was not trusting it. She could be working for Dreykov. I didn't want to risk it. "See." She steps back and I see Matt in my room. He shouldn't be here. He'll know about Matt. I need to protect him from Dreykov because I know it'll get worse. "Woah!" I tried to sit up but Claire stops me and puts me down. "You have a bruised rib, a sword wound, deep scratches on your neck and your face is beaten up badly."
"Let me go." My accent slips out.
"Listen, with all these wounds, I know for damn sure he doesn't know about what you do or he does and doesn't want to talk about it. Your rib will collapse if you don't let me help."
"Leave him out of this!"
"And I don't know what you do, I don't care but he had to walk in and feel you almost die in his arms. Either I help you or you'll die on this couch. Now, who did this to you."
"You don't need to know. It's my problem." Claire scuffs and checks out the sword wound that I got. "You can't tell him, please. It'll make things worse." I begged. She nods. She poured some stuff on my wound and I didn't make a face or a sound. The pain didn't hurt. She looks at me confused.
"Looks like you been through a lot." She scans up and down at my scars. "This scar is probably less than 5 years."
"Hawkeye, arrows, gotta love them."
"You're the Red Widow, aren't you?"
"That's my name, don't wear it out." I coughed and groan as my side hurts. "He doesn't know I'm her." Matt walks in and kneels down and holds my hand. Claire packs up.
"She's on bed rest for the week."
"What?! No!" I yelled and tried to get up.
"She will. I'll keep her safe. Thanks, Claire." Matt kisses my forehead and touched my broken cheek. Claire leaves and it was just now the two of us. "What happened? Who did this?"
"Robbers probably followed me."
"I thought I lost you." He brushes my hair back. "Devon..." I reached to touch his cheek. He was really worried about me. Broken from what happened. He cries a bit and I wiped his tear. "My sweet Devon." I didn't say anything because I was too hurt. Seeing him like this broke me. Do I really want to keep this from him? Is it worth it?
Matt stayed the night, sitting on my chair as he stares at me. He wanted to stay for safety and to watch over me. As I watched him close his eyes, I silently cried to myself, muffling my cries with my hand. How are you going pull this off Devon?

It's been already a week and I've been up and about. I hated staying on bed rest. Matt would make me stay home, have River, or even Foggy check up on me. Claire would come too, but we just talked about my life. She's actually nice, actually cares.
"The man beat, tortured, manipulated you. You can't fight back?" She asked me as she changed my bandage. "You are a dangerous vigilante."
"I was too scared to even look at him for what he did. Even if I did, he would've killed everyone I loved. The worse of it, I would beg for him to kill me but he wanted me to suffer." I fixed my shirt. "When Natasha said she killed him, I felt at peace. The moment I saw him, all of that went away. He's going to come back for more."
"Are you going to stop him?"
"I can try. Beating Dreykov and now that he was Taskmaster, the person I trained, it's going to be hard." We both stopped as we heard someone at the door. I froze and quickly grabbed my gun. "Go." I pointed at the fire escape and Claire hesitated. "Now!" The banging continues.
"Devon Hobs, it's the Police, we need to chat." Great. I hid my guns and other weapons under my bed and opened the door, faking a smile.
"Hello." It was just Mahoney.
"Can we chat?" I stepped out of his way and he scans the room as he enters.
"If this is about the break-in, I'm not pressing charges." He turns around.
"I'm not here about that." he sighs. "I'm here about your relation with Wilson Fisk." My stomach drops. "Your brother said he was a family friend."
"Yes, but I never really met him. Probably twice and that's all. Why?" I was now pissed. They are talking to River about him.
"We just wanted to clear some things. We know that your father had some business with him." My jaw clenched. Fisk promised. "Ms. Hobbs?"
"Me and my family don't know what my dad did for a living. My mother and my brother have nothing to do with this." Mahoney steps back. I pinched my nose from the headache I got. "We're clean."
"I know that. If you dont mind," He gives me his number. "We can talk more one day at the station." I grabbed the paper and just nod. He just kept looking at my face. "Want to press charges on whoever did that?"
"No. It's my fault." I walked him to the door. "I should've known what I was getting into. Have a great afternoon Mahoney." He nods and leaves. I crumpled up the paper and kicked my side table. He promised! He told me!

It was Friday. Its our first date. I just need one day to be normal. Just one, even if it is just an hour. Matt made me choose where to eat and went to my mom for her recommendation. Which I wish I didn't because this was a fancy place and I knew it didnt suit us.
I wore a dress, short sleeve and above the knees. It was simple and cute. I actually did some makeup, nothing to bold. I waited outside the restaurant and here Matt came. He brought me flowers and a tiny gift. He gave me a kiss.
"Ready?" I chuckled and we went inside and they took us to out seats. I scanned through the menu, everything sounded so fancy and I was nervous for some reason. Matt grabs my hand and stops me from shaking the table. "Take a deep breath. Youre okay."
"When im with you, I feel better." He smiles back at me.
"Are you always this nervous on dates?"
"Youre not going to believe me if I said this." He hums. "This is actually my first ever date, with a man, that I like."
"You never been on a date before?"
"Eros wasn't a romantic." I slipped my exes name. "I shouldnt be talking about my ex, sorry."
"Neither was mine. Elektra was a manipulative person, she caused me to flunk one of my semesters, nearly getting me kicked out." He did talk about her once. I can see he gets bothered by it, by her. "But you came into my life and you made everything better."
"Same here." We held hands on the table. He rubs his thumb over mine and we just smiled.
"I want to make this your favorite memory of us together." He slides a small box across the table. "I had help so, if you dont like it, please tell me." I opened the box and there was a small cross necklace with tiny diamonds on it. It was beautiful. "The catholic in me wanted you to-"
"Matt, it's beautiful." I looked at the beautiful jewelry and smiled like crazy. "This is the most nicest thing that anyone has ever given me, thank you."
"Here, let me." He gets up and takes the necklace around my neck and claps it together. His hands brushed over my neck, his knuckles touched my scars. I touched the tiny pendant and kissed him again. "Im really glad you like it."
"I love it." He sits back down and takes a sip of his water. "Hows work? How is that new client? Foggy said that this client is a big deal." His smile fades.
"Uh yeah, nothing I haven't seen before. I seriously doubt its gonna pan out but thats...thats fine."
"Okay, good."
"What about you? The trials? Hows that going?"
"Robin has been slacking lately, now that I took the week off, we're behind schedule. Connors wants to actually take our time and not rush. It's probably gonna take us 3 years to actually get it right." I rubbed my forehead. "Nothing new. Connors has been acting up lately. We just dont know why. The whole team is on edge."
"Im sorry to hear that." I saw a woman by herself stare at me. She gets up and walks away to the bathroom.
"Ill be back, i wont be long." I took my bag and followed the woman into the bathroom. I locked the door and she comes out of the stall. "Hello Petra." She didn't smile. "What do you want, kill me?" She hands me a piece of paper.
"Midnight." Was all she said and left. The paper had coordinates. Great. I got eyes. I shoved the paper in my bag and head back to the table. Matt was gone and I saw him by the door.
"Hey, is everything okay?" I placed my hand on his arm.
"Yeah they ran out of wine."
"Really?" He just nods. "Is it too fancy? I didn't mean to. Is it me? I just wanted to make a good impression, I-"
"Its not you. Its never you. You're perfect." I held his hand as we were about to leave.
"I know where we can go." I drove us to a small diner. It was cute and everyone was dress in cute uniforms. We ordered a milkshake and some fries. "My dad used to take me and River here every time he would pick us up from school. We would only order a milkshake and fries." I sipped on the creamy drink. "He would tell us not to tell our mom since she hated us having sweet stuff. But he was the rule breaker, anything for us you know? The last time we were here was when River won the spelling bee at school and we celebrated with this. I had good memories here."
"Sounds like your dad really loved you guys."
"Even though he wasn't really present, he tried. I think the reason why he did this is because he didn't know when he'll come back home. He wouldn't come back for weeks from his job. But he loved this place. To be honest, he loved anything if we were there with him. Doesn't matter where." I dipped a fry in my shake. "He didn't like being rich, he liked the cheap stuff. His uncle raised him that way. Doesn't matter if you're rich, don't forget where you came from."
"I've always felt more comfortable with the cheap stuff."
"Ill drink to that." I raised my glass up. Matt did the same and we clinked. "To cheap stuff." We laughed. "You know, I haven't had a milkshake in years. Its funny how good they still taste. I still feel like a kid."
"You missed out on a lot when were gone huh?"
"I was isolated. I lived in a small room with a red light, no windows. I was even lucky to go out just for a little bit. I lost my childhood, but being back, doing stuff that I missed out on, like going to the movies, hearing music, im glad i escaped." I clapped my hands. "I missed this city, the lights, the people. Theres still more to explore and I have time."
"You see, thats why I love this city. Ive lived here my whole life, and the place never stops unfolding new secrets." Matt pops a fry in his mouth.
"Its funny how we could've met when we were kids." We laughed. "Imagine that."
"I still would've fallen for you." I blushed.
"I was a trouble maker, so i think I would've annoyed you." We laughed again. I looked around the place, i just smiled. "I wish you could see this place."
"I can, if you describe it to me." I sat up and leaned over to Matt.
"So, this place is decorated like the 70s. So like the booths are like mini corvettes, we have a pink one." He chuckles. "The waitresses are dressed in cute matching outfits and they are wearing rollerblades. The bar stools are shaped like soda bottles and my favorite is the mini jukebox at the end of the place. It has all the songs that were popular back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. My favorite is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John."
"Elton John huh?"
"Second is American Pie by Don McLean." We stayed longer, talking about random things. Matt and I walked home. We sat on the steps of our apartment. We sat there like nervous teenagers. We both laughed as we knew this was so funny because we had sex and kissed each other, but we were so awkward about this date.
"Im going to kiss you." He grabs my face and pulls me in. We smiled as we kissed and I gripped onto his suit. His kisses were so warm and sweet. We stood up, still kissing, walked into the building and went to my door. Our hands were all over each other and I wanted him and he wanted me.
"God you make me crazy." I moaned out. He kissed my neck and I opened the door. We both stumbled in and took off our clothes as we got to my bed. Matt was on top of me, my legs opened. He gets down and gets closer to my face. "Please stay the night. Dont leave me in the morning."
"I cant." He gently kisses my collarbone. My hair spread out on the silk sheets. Only if he could see, how beautiful I looked under him. "Can I tell you why? Because I have this incredible ability to bring disaster to the best things in my life and tonight has been perfect. Dont you think?"
"Yes." My fingers danced around his jaw.
"And if i don't stay, i get to keep this one perfect night. And also have the chance of keep it going tomorrow." He kissed my jaw. "And the day after." He kisses my chest. He crawls back up and sets me on his lap. His hand grabs the back of my neck gently.
"Can i also say something?" He hums and nods. "I don't want this to end either." I whispered to his ear. "Everything good was taken from me, but this, im glad that nobody can. All that time ive been gone, all I had was darkness, rage, but when i met you, you Matty, you showed me the light." I wrapped my arms around him.
"I love you Devon." He says to me. I looked at him. "I won't let anything happen to you. You mean everything to me and you are the love of my life. I want to spend my life with you."
"I love you too." I kissed him. Being with him might get me killed but if I can protect him, thats all I want. I don't care the consequences I'll be in. For him ill change. Ill be good, ill stop killing, ill stop. Maybe I can be good again. "I meant every word. You make me a better person." He runs his hands over my body and lays me down.

It was midnight, i was on a rooftop and waited for the widow to come. I was expecting one but 4 showed up, surrounded me. Im going to keep my promise, i wont kill. The 4 widows walked closer to me.
"What do you guys want? Are you doing Dreykov's dirty work?" I looked at one of them.
"Wheres Romanoff." She spat.
"I dont know. She would be the last person I'll ever talk to." They seemed mad. "Have you checked the Avengers place? Oh wait, do you remember something? If you kill Romanoff, all the Avengers will hunt you down."
"You think that scares us?" One said.
"The hulk seems to not care if you do or you dont." I shrugged.
"Tell us where she is or Matt Murdock dies." Petra stated. Something switched in me. They knew. "Give it up." I was now in rage. I shot at one, running to the other. It was a shootout here. I sliced ones throat, stabbing the other and I gripped Petras hair, making her face me.
"If you told anyone about him, I will kill every last one of you." I bashed her head on the ground. I stepped back and looked at what I done. My hands covered in blood. My head went crazy, i was so overwhelmed. The voices of Dreykov, Eros, Melina all in my head were mixing together and i freaked out. I screamed at the top of my lungs and my hands over my ears, dropping to my knees. What have I done? I didn't mean to.
