05. glad you're back

I pinched my nose as i stared at the computer all day, eyes burning, watering. These glasses did not work. I just wanted to go home and sleep, try. I finished my last paperwork and headed out. 75 floors later, i stepped out of the Oscorp building and headed home. It was a Friday night, everyone was out and about and having fun.

"Ah! Devon-tron!" Foggy steps out of the building complex and Matt behind him. Thats a new name. Foggy always had a new nickname whenever he sees me, sees what suits me best. "You look-"

"Tired?"

"Sure." He jokes around. "Looks like you need a drink." I leaned against the front door and watch them stand below me. "I'll got the first round."

"Hes not going to give up, might as well come." Matt chuckles and makes room for me. I gave in and started walking with them. Foggy went on and on about their life in college. We head into a bar called Josies, we started drinking. "Dr. Devon Hobbs, wow." Matt chugs his shot.

"Not yet." I nodded, rubbing my temples. "Just love the whole 'hearing a guy who's so cocky about his title, but cant do the job right'."

"Why cant you show him how its done?" Matt leans over to me, nudging my arm. I tried hiding a smile, but Matt kept going. Since I moved here, Matt and Foggy have been good to me, too good. For the longest time, i got friends. I never had them. Foggy creeps up, giving us a few more shots.

"A toast, to our new best friend, Devon." We raised our glasses and chugged. We spend god knows how many hours at Josie's, it was fun, seeing the boys like this, all happy and goofy. When it came to an end, i was the sober one, making sure Foggy got into a taxi and helped Matt walk home and to his loft above me.

I tossed my keys into the bowl, going to my room and getting my computer and papers. The papers were scattered around the floor and coffee table as I looked into Matt and Foggy. Force of habit. They are nice people but its me.

Foggy, aka Franklin Percy Nelson, lived in Hell's Kitchen, family owns a butcher shop, went to Columbia university, he was good student, passed all his classes, he did theatre camp ages ago. But Matt, he was interesting.

Matthew Michael Murdock, hes the son of a boxer, Jack Murdock who was murdered in cold blood, nothing on his mom. He was nine when he had an accident where he went blind. When his father died, Matt was sent to Saint Agnes orphanage, where he had stayed until 18. During those years in the orphanage, he stayed quiet. He went to Columbia university, met Foggy. His grades started slipping one year, the same year Roscoe Sweeney was taken and sent to prison. Then, his grades went back again as if nothing happened. And after that, the rest is fine.

I rubbed my eyes, closing my laptop and opened a wine bottle. They're were clean but Matt, hes a mystery and I do like that. But again, they don't seem to be out to get me or have a double life, you know.

I heard noise coming from my room, i quickly and quietly reached for my gun from under the coffee table and slowly made my way to my room. I hid behind the wall and waited, the person came out and I tripped her, pinning her down. It was Sasha.

"Front doors exist you know." I got off of her and put away my gun, going back to my laptop. Sasha gets up, dusts herself and looked around. "What do you want?"

"Im just checking up on you." She picks up some trinkets my mother gave me to spice up the place. "See if you haven't murdered anyone, or said anything." I kicked my feet off the table and watched her.

"I haven't." I huffed out.

"Dont get too comfortable, yet has more to come." She runs her finger down my arm. I grabbed her wrist and pushed her off of me. She walks by the coffee table and saw the papers. "You were busy, cant put the widow down cant you?"

"This is not any of your concern." I spat, racing to gather my information and holding it close to my chest. "What I do is not your business." She raised her arms up and heads back to my room and leaves. Now I have to deal with her.

I raced to get ready to go see my parents, dressed up. Late as per usual. My heels clicked as I made to the door and bumped into Matt who was making his way down.

"You're in a hurry, Boyfriend called?" I pushed my hair back and helped him down.

"I don't have one." I chuckled to myself. Memories ran in but I pushed them to the side.

"Thats good to hear." He chuckles a bit. "My chances are high then."

"Are always a flirt Mr. Murdock?" I flipped my hair back as we got outside. He grips his walking stick and tilts his head to the side. "Get in line." I touched his arm as i walked away to my car. As I made it to the street, Matt grabs my arm and pulls me back to him, crashing into his chest. A car sped down the street and if Matt didn't pull me, I would've been hit.

"You okay?" He puts his hands on my arms, giving me a minute to pull myself together.

"Ive been in worse situations." I coughed. "Uh thanks for stopping me from becoming road kill." I quickly got in my car and drove away. How did he know? Did he hear it coming? Am I that stupid?

I raced upstairs to find my dad in the kitchen. He had a glass of whiskey and turns around and smiles at me. He was dressed nice, like he always had, a suit, black shiny shoes, and his watch me and River gave him for fathers day one year. He never wore a tie, ever, he would say that his work doesn't allow him to have one, makes it difficult for him.

"Devon." He signs me to join him. I made my way to the window that you can see all of New York. My dad sighs and sips his drink. "How's everything?"

"Everything is fine. Settling well, i made two friends, they're fun." I said without looking at him.

"Thats good to hear." He finishes his glass and looked at me. "I want you to know that, you can tell me anything okay? I know its hard to be back, trying to be back to reality." I just nod and i noticed that he had a cut on his cheek.

"Are you okay?" I ran my finger through the cut. It was new, fresh, if I had to say, he probably got it last night. He puts my hand down and just smiles.

"Work." My mom and River came down and greeted me. My mom tried to hug me but I backed away. She looked in pain but she placed her hand on my cheek.

"Hows work?" She asked me. I shrugged and followed her to the kitchen.

"Its great, you know, scientists and their experiments."

"Thats good to hear you like it." She tucks my hair behind my ear and her eyes widen. "Wha-" it was the ear that the police shot when were on the plane. I had to make a story quick. It was a huge missing piece gone and my mom knew that I didn't have this when I left.

"Dead tissue." I lied. "They had to cut it off." She brushed her finger and almost cried. "Dont cry."

"Im sorry, its just that..." she takes a deep breath. "I don't know what happened to you. Wherever you were, i hope that they didn't harm you or treated you badly." They did the opposite of what she wanted. The ear, its not a bad as the other injuries i gotten. But thats a later story.

"Im here now. Im safer than I ever be." The elevator doors open and my parents went to and greeted them. River and I stood there.

"Just try and not ask any questions, especially about dads job." He whispered to me. I frown and looked at Wesley, the one who was here when I came home, Sasha, and some more men in suits. But this guy was huge, tall. He walks in and greets my mom with a kiss on her hand and River smiles.

"Devon, this is your uncle." My dad introduced us.

"You were so little, I don't blame you if you don't remember me. Uncle Wilson Fisk." He shakes my hand. His hand was huge, covering mine. "Im glad you are back. Your father hasn't been this happy since you and River were born."

"Its nice to see you again Uncle Wilson." I nodded. He was right, honestly I don't even remember him. Name did sound familiar.

"You're so strong, all those years." He nods, looking down at me. "You're just like your father." He looks at him and my fathers eyes told him stop. "Its just so nice to have you here with us. May those people burn for what they've done." He walks away with my mom and telling him the food and wine she had made for tonight. I watched from afar and I knew he knew something.
