Chris's POV
While me and the rest of Alpha team were patrolling the deserted streets of Seattle, all of us heard what sounded like a car crash, coming from the other side of the building just up ahead.
"Captain, did you hear that?" Piers asked me.
"Yes, we should check it out immediately. There could be survivors over there that need our help. All right, you know the drill. So let's move out!" I ordered.
"Yes sir!" Everybody replied in unison.
We all continued on, being more cautiously and aware of our surroundings, treading to where the sound of crash came from. I sneaked up to the side of the building, leaning back against the wall. I motioned my team to halt behind me, as they all caught up to me. With my rifle in hand, I swiftly glanced over the side, checking for any hostiles. As I peered over, I immediately spotted the crash sight off the side of the road.
Inside the wrecked vehicle, there was a girl sitting upfront. Resting her head on top of the dashboard, unconscious and possibly injured from the crash. While there were a group of infected heading towards it. Two hostiles were already at the car pounding on it persistently with their fistsβtrying to get in. Overall, there were a total of ten infected in sight, possibly more within range. I pressed my finger onto my comm link, reporting in.
"Chris to HQ. Survivors have been located in the quarantine zone. Over."
"Copy that. What's the status on your location?"
"We're in the southeastern part of the city. B.O.W.s have been spotted just up ahead," I reported in.
"Copy that. Proceed with extreme caution. Over and out."
I motioned Piers to come forward first with his sniper rifle, along with the rest of the team. "I've spotted the crash sight. just up ahead. There's a survivor knocked out unconscious inside the vehicle. There's also infected in the area too. So here's the plan. Piers, you'll snipe the two hostiles at the crash sight, while the rest of us take out the other infected in the area as quickly and as effectively as possible. So, let's roll out!" I whispered to my team.
Piers carefully sneaked over to a nearby vehicleβhiding behind it. He cocked his rifle, as he adjusted the scope and aimed at his first target. Everybody else readied their assorted weapons, as I motioned my hand to signal the count down. I counted down in my head, as I did with my fingers.
Three...
Two...
One...
Now!
Piers fired the first shot at his targets, hitting both in the head, and killing them in the process. The sounds of the echoing gun shots caught the rest of their attentionβchanging their course to over towards us instead. The rest of the team, including myself, came out of hiding and fired our guns at the rest of the hostiles in the area. Eliminating all of them within a matter of seconds. After the hostiles were taken cared of, we moved out into the area with extreme caution. Performing a perimeter check like usual protocol. Once we all checked the entire area, I shouted to my men,
"Clear!"
I turned my attention to the crashed vehicle. Rushing over to it. I looked through it window, seeing the girl out cold in front seat. I carefully opened the car door, pressing two of my fingers against her neck. Checking for a pulse. I let out a relieved sigh once I found one. I carefully shake the girl by her shoulders. Trying to wake her up.
"Hey... Hey... Come on, wake up."
She stirred a little in her sleep, before eventually opening her eyes and waking up. The young woman moaned in pain then complained, as she clutched her temple.
"Ugh... Ow! My head..." She glanced up at me, instantly frightened.
"Hey, hey. It's okay... We're not here to hurt you, we're here to help," I explained.
She calmed down a little. "Okay, you just scared the shit out of me there man," She told me, as I helped her out of the car.
"Sorry about that, didn't mean to do that. What's your name miss?" I asked her.
"My name's Moira," She answered.
"Wait a minute, aren't youβ"
"Captain! There another girl in the back seat!" Flint cut me off.
"Just a second. Can you stand Moira?"
"Yes, just give me a minute," Moira answered, while she leaned against the hood of the crashed car. Clutching her forehead.
"I'll check her out Chris," Rebecca, our team medic said to me, as she went over to examine Moira.
I walked over to the rest of the team. While Austin was holding Piers's rifle, Piers was getting the other girl out of her seat in a heedful manner. As I reached them, Piers was kneeling on the ground, carrying the girl and laying her gently against the side of the vehicle. Once I laid my eyes upon her, I immediately recognized her from a few days earlier, and noticed the cut she had on her forehead. With blood trickling down from the injury.
"Piers, is Laura okay?" I inquired.
"Captain? How do you know this girl?" Jackson questioned me, raising an eyebrow at me.
"Not now O'Donnell, this isn't the time for asking questions," I told him, before redirecting my gaze back at my co-captain. "Piers, is she okay?"
"Laura's okay, she's just unconscious. But she has a nasty cut that won't stop bleeding," Piers responded, as was pressing a small cloth to her bleeding wound.
"Here Piers, I'll take over from here," Rebecca spoke up, as she and Moira approached us.
"How's Moira? Will she be alright?" I asked Rebecca.
Rebecca momentarily shifted her gaze to me. "She'll be fine, Moira just hit her head against the dashboard. That's all."
"Piers to HQ. The hostiles have been eliminated and we've made contact with the survivors," Piers reported to HQ.
"HQ here. Copy that," They responded over the link.
While Rebecca was cleaning and tending to Laura's cut, the rest of the team was busy talking with one another for the time being, while patrolling the area. I walked over to Moira, as she was standing off to the side. Leaning against the side of the crashed car.
"Hey Moira, can I talk to you for moment?"
"Yeah sure," She replied, then we walked over to the other side of the vehicle, in order to talk in private.
"Aren't you Barry Burton's daughter?"
"Yes, Barry is my dadβ Wait a minute, where's Claire?!" Moira freaked out suddenly. "Claire!!! Claire, where the hell are you!!!" Moira called out.
I immediately covered her mouth with my gloved hand to silence her. Anymore shouting and she could draw more infected towards us.
"Hey, we need to keep quiet. Or else you'll draw the B.O.W.s to us okay," I explained to Moira.
She nodded her head, acknowledging me, as I removed my hand away from her mouth. "You're Chris aren't you? You're Claire's older brother." Moira asked, as she glanced over at Laura for a moment.
"Yes... Yes I am. Okay, can you please tell what happened? What you remember at least."
At that point, I knew that Claire must've been with her before the crash. Something else must've happened right before we got here. 'Where could she be?'
Moira thought for a moment, recalling what happened before we arrived. "Claire was driving us to get out of the city because of the outbreak. Then all of a sudden, we all noticed at the last minute that some guy was standing in the middle of the road. He wasn't dead, that's the thing. So she tried to avoid hitting him, and ended up crashing off the side of the road. Then I blacked out, I don't remember anything after that, I swear," Moira explained to me, as her voice was getting shaky and she was getting very worried.
"It's alright Moira, we'll find Claire. I'm worried sick about her too, but we must remain calm. We know how tough she is, it takes a lot to take a woman like her down."
"Right... I agree, I just hope that she's okay."
I turned away from Moiraβglancing at the team. "Come on men let's move out! We can't stay here forever." I ordered.
"Yes sir!" Everybody said in unison.
Piers's POV
"Piers, you carry Laura. Rebecca, watch after Moira for now. We're heading out," Chris ordered.
'Poor Chris, his sister was missing, he must be worried sick for her. Even though he didn't look quite concerned as he should be, he had to stay strong.' I thought to myself.
"Hold on just a sec," Moira spoke up then she went over to the crashed carβgrabbing something out of it. She pulled out a box and two purses out of the vehicle. Next, Moira placed the box into one of the purses and then zipped it up. I didn't know what her motives were for grabbing something that's practically useless at a time like this, but I chose not to inquire about it.
"Need help with her?" Rebecca offered, while standing beside Moira.
"Sure, here hold this for a sec," I answered, as I handed my rifle over to Rebecca.
As I was about to pick her up, Laura started stirring a little bit in her sleep. She was muttering something very inaudibly, to the point where I couldn't make any of it out. Then, her eyes abruptly shot wide open, as she woke up. Appearing panicked and scared. Her breathing pace had increased heavily, like she had just woken up from some sort of hellish nightmare.
"Hey. Hey. It's okay Laura, you're safe," I reassured her, briefly grabbing ahold of her shoulders.
Laura shifted her gaze over at me. "Piers...? What are you doing here? What happened? Ow!" She yelped, as she touched her fore head. Feeling the taped gauze on her cut.
"Laura, you were in a car crash. Remember? You ended up getting a minor cut on your head from the accident. But thanks to our medic Rebecca over here, she patched it up for you," I explained to her, as I pointed over to Rebecca.
"Thanks Rebecca, I appreciate it," Laura thanked her.
"Anytime Laura," Rebecca replied back.
"How do you feel?" I inquired, as I vigilantly lifted her up off the ground.
Once Laura was back on her own two feet, she stumbled a bit. "A little light headed that's all, I gonna be fine though. Do you happen to have any water with you? I'm a bit thirsty."
"Sure just a sec, Rebecca." Rebecca threw me her water canteen and I handed it to Laura.
Laura opened it and drank out of it. Taking a few sips of it. Laura handed it back to Rebecca, as she handed me my rifle back. Moira walked over to herβhanding her one of purses she grabbed out of car.
"Thanks Moira," Laura thanked her.
Moira nodded her head back at her. I pulled the strap of my rifle over my shoulder so I could carry it more efficiently. After Laura hung the strap of her purse over her shoulder, she unzipped the purse and took a sheathed knife. Hooking it to her belt while glancing frantically everywhere around her, as if looking for someone.
"Come on, we gotta go. We can't stay here, it won't be safe for much longer," I stated, as we all began walking.
"But Piers, where's Claire...? Where's my mother?" Laura asked me, as she stopped in her tracks. Rebecca, Moira, and I stopped and turned around to face her.
I was utterly shocked. I didn't know how to react, more like I didn't know what I should say to her. 'Was she telling the truth? If she was telling the truth, then that would make her Chris's niece. What if she's actually lying? Laura doesn't look like she's lying, I know that she wouldn't lie at a time like this.' I thought to myself. She couldn't be lying, there were tears starting to brim in her eyes from her frustration. Laura turned to Moira, asking her,
"Moira, where's Mom? Is sheβ"
"No, she's not dead Laura."
"Then where is she?!" She demanded.
"We don't know Laura... Claire went missing after the accident," I explained to her.
"What's going on here?" Chris demanded, as he and the rest of the team came over to us.
Before anyone could say anything, a B.O.W. was about lunge at Chris from behind him unexpectedly.
"Chris watchout!" Someone shouted.
All of a sudden, someone from behind me competently threw a combat knife at the B.O.W. Everyone saw it all happen in slow motion. The knife glided pass me and everyone else in its path. The blade traveled in mid air, barely missing Chris's face, piercing flawlessly into the B.O.W.'s skull. It slumped onto the ground once it was killed, with blood seeping out of where the knife was jabbed.
All of us glanced to where it came, all our eyes landed on Chris's saviorβLaura. If it wasn't for her, Chris could of gotten bitten in the neck by the B.O.W. and infected. Even he was astonished at what just happened. No one on our team could throw a knife like that with such perfect marksmanship. 'Where the hell did she learn how to do that?'
"Damn... Thanks Laura, you just saved my ass," Chris thanked her.
Chris treaded over to the rotten corpseβpulling out the knife. With the bloody blade in his hands, he examined the blade after wiping the blood off it. His eyes widened and his forehead furrowed. Chris immediately rushed back over to Laura, his eyes flickering with curiosity and confusion.
"Where'd you get this knife? This one's similar toβ"
"To the one you gave your sister Claire, a long time ago?" Laura finished his sentence, using an obtuse tone of voice. She glanced up at him, with her eyes slightly narrowed.
Chris was speechless like the rest of the team. All of us were too shocked to say a even single word.
"My mother gave it to me today for my birthday, right before the car crash. I'm immensely worried about her, just like you too."
"So that meansβ"
"Yes, Claire Redfield is my birth mother making you my biological uncle," Laura cut him off again.
Silence filled the air, as well as shock. Off to the side, Laura glanced off to the side, something caught her eye. She walked away from Chris, going over to a nearby dark alleyway, close to the sight of the car crash.
"Where are you going, Laura?" Moira asked her.
"Just a second, I think I found something." Laura replied, as she approached a dead, infected corpse. There was something shiny on the ground beside it.
Chris treaded up to her, as she kneeled on the ground. Picking up the peculiar object.
Laura's POV
I picked up the switchblade off the groundβexamining it. It's handle was a bright blue, with fresh blood stained on the blade. Most likely from the corpse next to me, since it had a fresh bleeding stab wound in the head. From the looks of it, it didn't look like an ordinary switchblade. It looked a customized switchblade. It had the white TerraSave logo on it.
"What is it?" Chris asked me, even though I didn't know he was behind me.
A sense of fear and dread filled my heart, this switchblade belonged to my mother. She told me that she always had this blade with her in case of any emergencies. Mom would never leave this behind even during what's going on right now. 'What could've happened to her?'
I saw Chris from out of the corner of my eye, peering over my shoulder to take a look at the lost object in my hand.
"This is Mom's switchblade..." I stated.
I could hear Chris murmur a curse word quietly from behind me. I turned aroundβseeing what he had found laying the ground.
It was an empty syringe of morphine, and a large amount of it too. What surprised me most about it was that the needle had the Umbrella Corporation logo on its label.
Chris's POV
I can't believe this...
I didn't know about any it for so long. Yet, it was still all very shocking to me. 'Why didn't Claire tell me that she had a daughter? Why did she keep it a secret from me? Most importantly, who's the father of her child?'
I glanced over at my newfound niece, as she stared intensely with her sad, vibrant blue eyes at the switchblade she held in her hands. Zoning out from the realm of reality.
I can't let anything bad happen to her today, especially on her birthday. If anything were to happen to Claire, and take her out of the picture, I would be the only other family Laura would have left. Besides my pregnant wife Jill, only four months along in the pregnancy, and our five-year old son Nathan. From now on, I'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe and out of harms way. No matter the odds.
