Bernadette could have been...should have been just as perfect and admired and pristine as the rest of her perfect and admired and pristine family. She was taught manners and etiquette and rules and social skills at an age far too young to be considered normal. She could have been the perfect Ambroise, just like the rest of them. She decided to be honest instead. Looking back, Birdy was sure her family had the same ambitions and tug at their heartstrings for adventure and escape as she did, they just didn't do it, they stayed in a safe space.
After a childhood of trying to be the best daughter she could be, she reached a point of not caring. They had saw trouble in her eyes and recognised the devil in her at a young age so no matter what she did, how hard she tried, she could not meet the expectations of what everyone wanted her to be. Instead of being what everyone else wanted her to be, She would be what she wanted to be in the most out-there way so everyone knew. As much as you can without being shunned from society anyways. She is still 15 and still dependent on her parents and she cannot quite live up to her name all the way yet but she is trying. She has found herself to be happier than ever like this, living boldly and authentically and confidently.
That doesn't mean she doesn't feel insecure though, just because she has decided to live this out-there life. Hell, she's a teenager! For forever she always pushed herself to make her family proud, to be like her older sister. That way of thinking doesn't go away overnight. She struggles to shake off her tendencies of judging every action she does. How her limbs aren't even that long and she still can't control them all that well, how her vocabulary has the habit of turning to the vulgar. Sometimes it is like she isn't an Ambroise at all. She feels like she's behind a glass wall, do they all not see how mental they are? She didnt exactly mould into how her family wanted them all to be but with that always came a sense of freedom and release.
Birdy is less interested in the sheer excitement and pleasure of the moment than she is in enjoying the social and emotional connections she makes with others. In years to come she will not remember the riverbend that was near the town for the clear waters and soft grass and the bliss of it on a warm day, she will remember the laughs of her friends and the jokes they shared, sat by the edge exchanging stories.
She tends to see life as a big, complex puzzle where everything is connected - but unlike her cold and scrutinising family and all their rivals, who tend to see that puzzle as a series of systemic machinations, she likes to see it through a prism of emotion, compassion and mysticism, and is always looking for a deeper meaning. Don't get her wrong, not so much that she can't live in the moment but sometimes she would be exploring the hills and caves and rivers and remove a little notebook from her pocket and jot down how something looks, or try and recount it on her walk home. How much longer would these adventures last? As she hurtled towards sixteen, this thought plagued her. She had to remember them, her friends and the times they spent together.
As she observes, forming new connections and ideas, she won't hold her tongue- she's excited about her findings, and shares them with anyone who'll listen. This infectious enthusiasm has the benefit of giving her a chance to make more social connections, which is why she is basically friends with everyone that she can be friends with. It has the bonus of getting extra little things like profiteroles on her plate while also meaning she has company. Basically everyone in the little town nearby knows her by now, and some have even become very close friends.
All this adaptability and spontaneity comes together to form a person who is approachable, interesting and exciting, with a cooperative and altruistic spirit and friendly, empathetic disposition.
Aswell as her daring escapades out of her bedroom window and into the world, she is a natural explorer of interpersonal connections and philosophy, but this backfires when what needs to be done is that schoolwork sitting right in front of her. She likes English and history and art, studies of the heart and the soul in their metaphorical forms, not their physical. It's hard for her to maintain interest as tasks drift towards routine, administrative matters, and away from broader concepts. It's why she wants to get as far away from the family business as quickly as possible. She'd like to travel the world and write and meet people and live. People forget years but they will always remember moments. She sometimes takes for granted that she's lucky, given that many wouldn't have the funds or even the ability to think about these dreams above all other issues but she can't help desiring more from life. Another benefit of hers is that she is not the oldest child, she has less pressure on her to sort out her life in general, though it does mean she is doted upon. She hates the constricted, structured life that her status has given her. Bernadette loathes being micromanaged by her parents and restrained by heavy-handed rules - she wants to be seen as a highly independent master of her own fate, even a possessor of an altruistic wisdom that goes beyond draconian law. The challenge for her is that she lives in a world of checks and balances, pointed politeness and expectations, a pill she is not happy to swallow. Trust me, many people have tried to quell her messy adventurous spirit. Bernadette has her own brand of stubborn recklessness. Sometimes, especially when she was younger, she would break a rule on purpose infront of her siblings or teachers just to see what they would do. See how far she could push. That's how she ended up sneaking out so much. She didnt think it would be so easy the first time but all of the sudden she was running full speed through the towns, moon high in the sky. Her habit of doing things just to see if she could has never gone away. Owing to her rather sheltered upbringing, Birdy's optimism and enthusiasm can border on recklessness, to the point of endangering the people around her with her madcap antics. Its never intentional, and she'll always try to reverse her fuck-ups but there have been many, many situations that it was almost impossible to cover up. Many believe she is careless about her life, because of her tendency to jump into danger willingly. Its not carelessness alone, but paired with her curiosity its hazardous. She is very playful and competitive. She'd jump off a cliff so she could say she survived it and to know what it felt like. Birdy has great athletic prowess which, coupled with her competitive streak, makes her formidable. Oh yes, any form of conpetition like debates or board games or races causes her to absolutely transform into a bloodthirsty monster. She almost looks like her elders. This could stem from her constant attempts to make her parents proud of her that she has long abandoned, and for her to be praised.....but she doesn't think its anything to worry about. It's part of the reason she was such a child genius, she wanted to prove she was able to be more than they thought. Turns out what they thought was not playing a card game all night because the game went on and nobody would concede to her cocky words. When she is being competitive, she often will be teasing or sarcastic towards her opponents, her sharp wit emerging, though never with her grandparents or father. Her goal in life is to beat her grandfather in chess. After that, God may come down from the heavens and strike her down.
Charming, independent, energetic and compassionate, she can certainly be felt in any crowd. Really and truly, Birdy is a young girl who refuses to be robbed of the experiences that come with that title.

'You can't take any gold or rings further than the grave' was a sentiment expressed to her one of the first times she had snuck out to a small town on the Riveria. She had found a young boy and asked him to swap clothes with her for a sum of money so her bright clothes weren't so noticeable and thats all he replied, clutching at his coat. His mother had made that coat for him. It meant alot. She had sort of stared at him, bewildered. From a young age, her entire life(whether or not she had even realised) was entirely centred around wealth. She was taught languages and manners and certain skills in order to be the right daughter to marry off rich. Ofcourse she was messy and reckless and so unbelievably clumsy and it didnt work but it was only now she realised why it was so important for her family. She had everything due to money. Even now, their trips to the Riveria, absolutely drenched in wealth. The amount of clothes she owned and ruined due to her escapades in gardens and rivers and fields...well regardless she hadnt really known the price of her living until she had spent time with people who's price of living was a fraction of hers. Ofcourse, in childish innocence, she had tried to explain this to her family. This was shot down and it was then she realised the little glass menagerie she had lived in, the illusion of a life of happiness and luxury and abundance. This brought her security, and wellbeing yes, but also restrictions and comparisons and inadequacy. Usually the term false class consciousness would be applied to the working class but this upper class little girl just broke through it in a day. How do you balance appreciation for what you have with absolute loathing for every rule and every stepped upon person it was built on? Answer; you don't. She resents the selfishness of her family and their old fashioned, stifling ways and wants to escape as soon as possible, before they marry her off or something. She started off by wearing clothes she bought in town, cheap, local businesses. She says they're gifts from friends. She starts talking to the help to the point where she knows them really well. Most of her friends were people who worked for her or they were people in the town. She sneaks off almost every other night, and some afternoons if she can get away with it. She has been taught the rules well and now she knows how to break them.

โขreading and writing- often at 3am she will climb up to her roof and be armed with some form of book or notebook and pen
โขthe outdoors- at any given time, She would rather be outside than in. Especially in summer, she is outside a good 80% of the time
โขsummer- best time of year for adventures! Longer days, brighter sun, less school! Plus more of the people at the village are out and about.
โขnight- it can be both a calm, contemplative time and a time for absolute chaos, and that's something Birdy can appreciate
โขtea- she has been fed it since she was little and would take it over coffee any day. She doesn't need any extra energy
โขmusic- she plays piano and guitar(badly, like very basic) but she also follows many singers she hears of in the town
โขmeeting new people- you can never have too many friends
โขgetting to prove people wrong- when people doubt her, she likes to watch them realize their mistake
โขbees- you know that one thing you'd latch on to as a child and that would be your thing? Yeah well bees were Birdy's. Some of the staff or kids in the town would make "birds and the bees" jokes often enough but she didnt care, she just laughed back
โขflowers- she always has a fresh vase of lilies in her room, the best bit about the riviera is its gardens, specifically the poppy field and the rose gardens
๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
โขGood books with bad endings- ooooo this infuriates her wHY WOULD YOU PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO A BOOK TO SHIT ON IT AT THE END WHAT THE FUCK WHY-
โขcooking- she is bad and hasn't had the time to be good at it
โขbadly played piano sections in orchestras- she plays the piano so she can tell when they're being bad
โขhaving nothing to do- whenever she isn't doing something she feels like she's procrastinating work she doesn't have.
โขsports- they're chasing a ball around a field, you mean this is supposed to be emtertaining?
โขcats- she doesn't trust them
โขthe cold- less people wanna do stuff, and she hates the nippy weather. Unless it snows.
โขisolation- it's her biggest fear
โขbeing told what to do- she may have some...issues with authority.
โขboredom- literally goes against everything she is as a person.
โขrude people or fake nice people- if you're gonna be a bitch, atleast have the guts to let people know.
โขhaving to stay in one place for too long- pretty damn self explanatory
โขcoffee- she loves the smell, hates the taste
โขLiquorice- a candy.. that isn't sweet???
โขsalt and vinegar flavoured things- the pungent smell is awful
