π±ππππππππ’ πππ πΏππππππππππ’:
Growing up, life made it very clear that Cordelia and her mother were the leftovers from Oswald Winston's poor decision making and selfish way of thinking. It seemed that, growing up, her father wanted nothing to do with her. She was the child from the failed marriage, the anchor connecting him to a reputation he was trying to shed. When he spoke of or to Cordelia and her mother, it seemed like his insides were lined with vinegar and turpentine. She could never figure out what her mother saw in him to begin with.
She would visit on weekends and he would hole himself up in his office, only coming out every so often and avoiding her like the plague when he did if he could help it.
Most of the time he would just send out someone else to drive her home. It was more isolating than anything she could imagine. So she stopped visiting beyond what the court mandated her to. This experience led her to grow quite bitter towards her father, and in turn let her develop a hard shell to combat the emslaught of negative emotions that would fill her during every visit. She developed witty retorts, sarcasm and hardened glares that would have Scarlet O'Hara quaking in her heels.
Any time Mrs Winston tried to interact with her, she would torture her with annoyed responses, and backcheek. What was she going to do? Punish her? She could fucking try. Any time her father tried to interact with her, she would just use the conversation to get some jabs in, or up her allowance to keep quiet about the fact he doesn't even really look after her when she did visit. Very quickly, she became detached from the whole Winston family situation. They were all too far up their own assholes to ever even notice she was there.
If she was going to be embarrassed in her daily life when Mr and Mrs Winston flaunted their happy family, she could build up her popularity and reputation in a different setting. And she did. She is a good student, a well known person, head of the cheerleading team, has so many friends that she has lost count, and so many scholarships that she has a free ride for her entire university experience when that eventually happens. She learned quickly that she was hardworking, determined and more intelligent than anyone would ever give her credit for. Her people skills developed out of necessity and she knew the social strings she had to pull to get invited to places, whether that meant talking to someone just because she knew they had a summer home on a lake, or going to certain games because one of the players is particularly attractive, she is calculated. She knows what she is doing. She didnt mean to learn how to be so manipulative, it just happened. Come high school, everyone knew her name, not just as the poor abandoned child of Mr Winston, but as her own person. People grew jealous of her even and she loved it. In her own twisted form of revenge against her own home being wrecked, she had this odd talent of getting other people's boyfriends to let their eyes wander. She wouldn't sleep with them, no, just let them do enough that they were exposed for what they are. She would have done the same to the girls who had wandering eyes but she didn't want to expose her own confused feelings about sexuality.
She is a bombshell, a force to be reckoned with in every way. She is always put together, in trend with outfits and hair and makeup, regardless of whatever is going on around her. She carries herself in a way that demands respect. She can charm just about anyone. This may come from a need to prove her worth to people but...she will tackle that issue another day. She knows what she wants and works her ass off to get it. Her determined nature is what will be the cause of her triumph, as she very rarely, if ever, gives up. This translates into arguments and the like, where she is stubborn and hotheaded as anything...that is in her personal life. When they're arguments that matter, she is cunning and calculating, able to manipulate her opponent in any way. She tries not to manipulate her friends and family and is working on detaching "work Val" from "normal Val". She is extremely loyal to her friends and fam-...well her mother. Her mother has always been there for her, has drilled into her that the only person you can rely on is yourself, that resilience is one of a person's best attributes. It isn't only her mother she is loyal too though. She will do anything for someone as soon as they get her trust- not that getting her trust is easy, given her mom's lessons. She is a great friend when you earn her friendship, who will destroy anyone who hurts you, and be there to pick up the pieces when something goes wrong. Not necessarily in a caring, tlc type way, but in a way that is practical. She has often dragged sad friends out to parties or helped them fix whatever is wrong...after a good night of fun that is.
Work hard play harder? Welcome to the physical embodiment of that. She is the life of the party. Her mother, probably to compensate in alot of ways, has given her enough freedom that Cordelia basically has free reign. Her curfew is late, rules lax and if she breaks them, she can get out of it quickly enough. She knows how to toe the line in a way that she can get away with most things. That means she is always out and knows how to bend the rules. She has been supplying alcohol to her friend group and housing parties while her mother was away for years.
She has always attended Camp Rushaven for obvious reasons, and she has always genuinely enjoyed it, though as she has gotten older those reasons have certainly shifted to less innocent reasons. What, its not like she's going to adore time at the lake just cause of the water toys anymore!
Though she is a bit insensitive and manipulative, outright bullying has never been and would never be her style. She generally strives to do whatβs right overall. Concepts like egalitarianism and karma can mean a great deal to her. She pursues this with a single-mindedness that can catch others off guard. Personally, she rarely settles for βgood enough,β and her willingness to disrupt the status quo may not please everyone.
She is troubled by injustice, and she cares more about altruism than personal gain when push comes to shove. As a result, she sometimes puts her own personal goals aside and steps in when she sees someone facing unfairness or hardship, aspiring to fix societyβs deeper problems, in the hope that unfairness and hardship can become things of the past. After all, her hard shell is just that, a hard shell.
