CHAPTER TWELVE
"If there is even the slightest movement from Silas you get yourself out. I don't care about anyone else."

β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’

CASSANDRA WALKS INTO THE GILBERT HOUSE, Klaus turning to her, his body deflating as he sees her. Bonnie lowers the barrier so they are able to hug each other. Klaus was glad that she had come back before they left, he had a bad feeling about this whole thing. Cassandra pulls away, kissing him before she wraps her arms around his neck. "Nik. We're leaving today." She informs him, making him frown lightly but he nods his head, pressing another kiss to her lips.

"Okay, be safe. Please." He says as he brings her closer to him. Cassandra nods her head as she smiles at him.

"I will." Cassandra promises as she licks her bottom lip, glancing up at him. "Just wanted to give you a goodbye present." She whispers towards him, pulling her sweater zipper down a little bit to reveal the lace bra she had been wearing. Klaus smiles at her before she zips it back up and plants another kiss on his lips.

"Normally I'd be more happy but my brother's dead body kind of kills the mood." Klaus informs her as he glanced over at Kol making Cassandra sigh as she had been trying to push that memory away otherwise, Elena wouldn't survive the trip to the island.

"Yeah." She says, her voice cracking as she looks down at the floor and Klaus noticed her change in mood.

"Hey." Klaus says as he lifts her chin up with his finger so her glossed over eyes were looking at him. "Come here." He whispers making her practically jump into the hug that he was offering. Klaus tightly wraps his arms around her, knowing that she needed to let out the emotions that she was feeling instead of bottling them up.

"I'd leave you two alone but we don't have much time." Bonnie admits as she stares at them, rocking back and forth on her feet as she was trying to stop her tears from showing.

"Bonnie, you can wait outside if you need to." Cassandra tells her, not wanting to keep her in here if she didn't want to.

"No, it's okay." Bonnie tells her, shaking her head as she could feel the tears building up. "I should've been here. If I was, they weren't gonna be able to kill him." She states as she cries, looking down at the floor as she was too ashamed to look at either of them. Klaus pulls away from his hug with Cassandra to walk over to the witch.

"Bonnie, my brother set his mind on something and is not easily deterred. It wasn't your fault." Klaus assures her as he could tell that she was really broken up about Kol's death, no matter how small their time together was.

"But--" She goes to argue but Klaus only shakes his head. Silently telling her to let it go. Bonnie just bursts into tears, her arms wrapping around Klaus who a little shocked by the sudden action. She cries in his arms even though he just stood there as she hugged him. Klaus finally brings his hand up, patting her back until Bonnie pulls away from him, wiping her tears as she felt a little embarrassed. "I'm sorry." Bonnie apologizes, knowing that Klaus wasnt the best at giving affection if it wasn't towards Cassandra.

"It's okay." Klaus tells her with a soft smile on his face that comforted her. Bonnie nods as she sniffles, glancing towards Cassandra.

"We have to go." She says to the girl who nods, moving out of the space that the barrier was around but Klaus only stops her, looking her dead in the eye.

"If there is even the slightest movement from Silas you get yourself out. I don't care about anyone else." Klaus says as he puts his hands on either side of her face.

"I will. I promise." Cassandra says with a nod as she stares at the man. Klaus sighs before planting one last kiss on her lips and letting her leave the house with Bonnie. He reaches out his hand, feeling the barrier once again locking him in.

β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’

THEY HAD MADE IT TO THE ISLAND WHERE CASSANDRA WAS CHILLING NEXT TO REBEKAH AS THEY BOTH GLARED AT ELENA. The fact that Elena never even apologized yet says a lot about her. Stefan glances at them, a sigh leaving his lips as he knew they weren't going to stop. "You're not even helping." He informs them as Rebekah looks at him, raising an eyebrow.

"You're perfectly capable of tying a knot." She tells him before looking back at Cassandra.

"Giving Elena the evil eye isn't really helping." Stefan says as he nudges cassandra who only glares at him. They're lucky she doesn't just snap her little twig neck.

"She killed my brother, tried to get you to put a dagger in my back. She's lucky all she's getting is the evil eye." Rebekah states as she notices Cassandra was just as angry as she was, as she should be, Kol and her were very close.

"You know I can hear you, right?" Elena asks as she rolls her eyes a little bit. Cassandra scoffs, taking the knot from Stefan and finishing it.

"You know I don't care, right?" Rebekah replies making Cassandra snort before she turns to Stefan who was staring at the ground.

"Did you know? What they were gonna do?" She asks him as she catches his attention. Stefan looks over at her, seeing obvious pain in her eyes and he felt bad for her.

"I didn't know until it was too late to stop it." Stefan admits as he sighs, moving his hand over to squeeze her knee. Cassandra only clenches her jaw, scoffing a little bit.

"Do you know what it's like? Watching one of your best friends go up in flames, screaming in agony?" Cassandra asks him, her voice cracking as she doesn't falter her eyes from his. Stefan gives her a guilty expression, feeling like was partly responsible even though he wasn't.

"I'm really sorry, Cassandra." He admits as he rubs her knee, leaning closer to her, he was going to give her a hug but he knew cassandra needed some space.

"Like sorry is gonna bring him back." She mutters before glancing away from him only in time to see Elena charge at Rebekah with the white oak but the blonde stops the attack easily, pushing her to the ground.

"Go ahead, try to kill me. Then you'll have to face your real problems, like the fact that Stefan invited me here himself. I guess he likes me again." Rebekah taunts the girl before sitting back down. Cassandra stares at Elena before getting up and walking over to her making the girl move backwards slightly.

"Ill keep this." Cassandra says as she bends down, ripping the stake from Elena's hands. Elena only flinches as she didn't know if Cassandra was going to do anything to her. Rebekah sees the stake in Cassandra's hands and only holds out her hand.

"Cassandra." She says in a stern voice, raising an eyebrow at the girl. Cassandra only whines, knowing the reason Rebekah was so hesitant. "Given you just tried to use it to kill us yesterday because of the mark, I'm not taking chances because I know that you could actually kill me." Rebekah explains to her making cassandra roll her eyes but she gives her the stake anyways. Cassandra knew Rebekah was right, if anyone could easily stake them it would be her.

"Wait, you tried to kill them?" Stefan asks with furrowed eyebrows, not knowing he missed something huge.

"The mark, the divine. It almost completely took her over. Luckily Klaus was able to get her back before she stabbed him with it." Bonnie says as she makes her way over to them. Cassandra looks at her for a second before a thought hits her.

"Wait.. Bonnie." She says, making the girl look over at her curiously. "I tried to kill Klaus, wouldn't I have died if I'm in his bloodline?"Cassandra asks, wondering why on earth the divine would want to kill Klaus, fully knowing that she came from his sire line.

"Yeah, I'm not sure. Surely the divine wouldn't have tried to kill him if it knew you would die too." Bonnie replies, also confused by that fact. The only thing she could think of is, because of the divine being dark magic she would have cast a spell, stopping her from being killed because of the original.

"Wow, I missed a lot." Stefan mumbles as he didn't understand how he didn't hear about any of this taking place.

"That was kinda my fault too." She says guiltily before getting up and walking away from them, not wanting to remember anything else. Damon follows her with his eyes before looking back at Bonnie.

"So, this mark. What exactly is it?" He asks as he wanted to know exactly why she had turned all killer on her fiancee and friends.

"It's the mark of the divine. Pure darkness in human form." Bonnie states making Stefan and Damons eyes widen as they couldn't even imagine Cassandra having that inside of her. Sure, she's had moments where she looked like she was going to go off the rails, but nothing that extreme.

"That sounds fun." Damon mumbles before heading off over to Cassandra who had sat by herself, her arms wrapped around her body.

"If Cassandra let's the divine take over, we can't stop it unless we kill the host." Bonnie tells Stefan, knowing Damon heard it as well. Stefan frowns, hating himself for not being around her enough to know about this. He knew they weren't exactly close anymore but he would have thought she would have told him.

"Hey." Damon says, sitting next to Cassandra on the log but she only rolls his eyes, thinking there was some exterior motive to just making conversation.

"What do you want, Damon?" She snaps at him, not happy that he was anywhere near her after everything he's done.

"Look, I haven't been there for you and I feel really bad about it." Damon admits with a frown as he moves cautiously towards her. "I let Elena get in the way of our friendship." He hated the fact that because of Elena, he had lost Cassandra. Elena doesn't even treat him well, especially when Stefan is still around and it pissed him off.

"Did you know." Cassandra asks, her eyes looking at the sand. She wanted to ask the Salvatore's this just incase there was a small chance that they weren't involved in Kol's death.

"No but once Kol's compulsion wore off, I knew." Damon admits, knowing that Kol wouldn't ever voluntarily undo his compulsion. Damon just thought they daggered him until he saw Jeremy's tattoo. "I am really sorry, Cassandra." He tells her, making her laugh humorlessly, hating how everyone was taking pity on her. "Even though he beat me to a pulp and compelled me to kill Jeremy." He mumbled making Cassandra snap her head towards him. If she had known what Kol was doing, she would've stopped him long before he ended up in the Gilbert household.

"If I had known--" Cassandra starts to say but he only holds up his hand, shaking his head.

"I know." He replies, knowing Cassandra would've come save him even if they weren't on the best of terms. They did still look out for each other.

"Damon, I need you to promise me something." Cassandra says, her jaw clenching as she knew he was the only one she could ask. Lowering her voice a little bit, she leans closer to him. "If the divine takes over, if you see me starting to lose myself. I need you to kill me." She tells him making his eyes widen as he sits back.

"What?" He says, a little too loudly for her liking. Cassandra covers his mouth with a glare before sighing.

"If you kill me before the divine has full power, it'll die."Β  Cassandra says making Damon scoff, shaking his head as he definitely was not going to kill her.

"I'm not gonna kill you." He snaps at her, no matter what they went through, he wasn't going to end her life.

"Please Damon." She pleads, taking his hands in hers making him falter a little bit. "I don't want to hurt anybody else." Cassandra tells him as she sees that Damon was thinking about it, not understanding why this thing couldn't be taken care of without her having to die.

"Why are you asking me." Damon asks, not knowing why she didn't ask Rebekah or literally anybody else who she actually liked.

"Because I know you'll go through with it." Cassandra says as she meets Damon's eyes. She was right, he was one of the only people who could look her in the eye and stake her if it was absolutely necessary. Rebekah was too close, Bonnie couldn't do it either, Damon thinking because of her innocent look but Cassandra knew Bonnie cared for her. Stefan would hesitate and Elena, no matter how much hatred was between them, wouldn't be able to do it either. That left only him in their group and he hated it. Even back home, no one else would have the guts to do it. Not even Klaus.

"Okay." Damon says after a long pause making her pull him a little closer.

"Promise me, Damon." Cassandra says, her eyes pleading him silently. Damon clenches his jaw, his mind running at a thousand miles an hour before he closes his eyes for a moment. If this is what she truly wanted, he didn't want her to suffer. Making up his mind, he opens his eyes, looking at the girl.

"I promise."

WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS, Cassandra was in front of Stefan who was a little annoyed at this because she kept stopping in front of him making him bump into her several times. He wanted to shove her out the way but was being nice about it. Stefan knew she wasn't doing it on purpose as Cassandra apologized everytime. "Is anyone else a little creeped out?" Elena asks as she sighs, glancing around the woods. Cassandra rolls her eyes, slowing down a little bit so she didn't get too close to Elena and rip out her spine. Stefan glares as he stops in his steps abruptly to not run into her again. He lifts up his hands, ready to strangle her but restrains himself.

"So, then leave. Out of everyone, your presence is the least necessary." Rebekah announces making Cassandra laugh as she glanced behind her at Stefan who puts on a smile when he notices.

"Please don't start." Damon says annoyed as he didn't want to hear them fight.

"I'm merely stating facts. Jeremy has the spell on his body, Bonnie's the witch that unseals the cure, Shane is the human compass, you and I have the tombstone which does God knows what, Cassandra is here because she's stronger than all of you, and Elena has no point." Rebekah explains with a smile on her face making Elena glare in front of her. Cassandra sighs, kicking her feet against the twigs as she keeps walking.

"What about me?" Damon asks confused as he was at the front, keeping an eye on the creepy professor Shane who Cassandra learned hadn't been dead after all.

"You have a nice behind." Rebekah calls out causing Cassandra to smirk as she shakes her head at her statement. Cassandra then sighs, slowing down even more as she keeps her hands in her pockets.

"You okay?" Stefan asks as he nudges her back, being close to her because it was either fall behind or be on her tail.

"Yeah, don't worry about me Stefan." She replies with a false smile as she falls behind so she was next to him.

"Ill always worry, Cassandra." Stefan admits making the girl glance at him for a moment. She knew he was being sincere and that made her realize that maybe he wasn't doing anything of this to hurt anyone, he was simply looking out for himself. Clearing her throat, she puts a smirk on her face.

"So, you and Rebekah?" She teases softly, making sure Rebekah herself didn't hear her. Stefan rolls his eyes but a smile pressed on his face.

"Don't even start." He groans, knowing she was going to tease him about this the whole entire time.

"What? Bonnie and I already made plans to get you together but looks like you took matters into your own hands." She explains making Stefan slightly confused as he didn't realize Bonnie and her were that close.

"We are not together." Stefan tells her, shaking his head. He wouldn't mind getting with Rebekah again after centuries but Rebekah was so damaged that everything Stefan did, she thought he was lying and using her.

"But you like her." Cassandra sing songs making Stefan glare playfully at her before squinting.

"Keep walking." He mutters as he pushes her infront of him. Half because he wanted to stop the conversation and half because he had wanted to do that the whole time they had been walking. Cassandra only laughs before catching up with Rebekah and wrapping her arms around the girl.

β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’Β°β€’

"CENTURIES AFTER QETSIYAH DIED, these miners who were excavating a well on the island suddenly went mad. They bled themselves dry, no apparent reason. So legend spread that these miners, in exchange for a drop of their blood, saw visions of their lost loved ones in the well they were digging. So, word traveled and explorers sought out the well to see if the legend was true." Shane explains to them as he continues to walk them through the woods, it had already turned dark. Cassandra sighs as she was getting bored of walking this entire way.

"So the well was magic?" Bonnie asks curiously making Shane look back at her.

"Some people believed the voices of lost souls were just the wind vortex whipping through the caves and the visions were caused by inhaling the islands poisonous plant life." Shane tells her making Cassandra rub her face, stopping in her place for a moment. Stefan hits her back, internally groaning as he glares at the girl.

"And what do you believe?" Elena asks but frankly, Cassandra didn't care. All she wanted was to get the cure and leave.

"I believe in magic. My wife and my son died within months of each other. So I decided to try the well out for myself. I offered up my blood and I waited. I saw my wife, I saw her eyes, her smile. My blood let me see her again." Shane says making Cassandra's ears perk up. If that was true, maybe she could finally talk to her mom after having no contact.

"Yeah, got it. Don't eat the poisonous flowers." Damon mumbles annoyed, stepping in front of Shane as he wanted to move more quickly.

"Wait, stop. Stop," Shane tells him, halting Damon in his place. "Is anybody paying attention?" He asks as he glanced back at the group. "Our-" he begins to say but cassandra only picks up a rock, throwing it in front of them so that the net sprung up from the ground. Everyone just stares at her as she wears a blank expression on her face.

"Can we go now?"Β  She asks, walking past them, leaving them all to look at her curiously before they started walking again. Shane catches up to her, wanting to talk to her after he had overheard the conversation earlier.

"You know, the mark of the divine is one of the most ancient magic to ever exist. If it's inside of you, you are more powerful than you can ever imagine." Shane tells her making Cassandra scoff as she turns to face the man.

"Tried it out, tried to kill my fiance. No thanks." She bluntly responds before going to leave but he only grabs her arm.

"But, just think about it. If you can control the divine but still become one. You can use that power anyway you like." Shane informs her making her furrow her eyebrows a little bit.

"You can't control it." Cassandra states, knowing that messing with dark magic wasn't exactly something that you do and live after.

"I helped Bonnie with her magic. Let me help you." Shane says as he steps closer to her but Cassandra only scoffs, shaking her head.

"The only thing I'm doing, is finding this bloody cure. Maybe it can't take over if I'm human." Cassandra mumbles, turning and walking away but Shane only sighs, shaking his head.

"You can't use the cure." He calls out to her making her stop in her steps. Everyone else looks at Shane confused on why Cassandra couldn't take it.

"Excuse me?" Cassandra asks as she turns back around, an angry look on her face.

"The divine. If it's already inside of you, it stops you from dying easily, right?" Shane asks making Cassandra nod her head a little bit. "It can sense magic from miles away, if it senses the cure? It'll do everything it can to protect itself from being hidden away." He explains to her making her shrug her shoulders as that wasnt exactly anything new.

"So, I'll get someone to shove it down my throat." She states, gesturing to the group of morons behind him.

"The divine will just spit it out." Shane says making everyones eyes widen. Even Elena of all people felt bad for Cassandra. She couldn't become human even if she wanted to. "You are the divine, Cassandra and as long as it's in here. You cannot take the cure." Shane tells her as he points at her chest. Cassandra glares at him, not liking what he was telling her so she only scoffs and walks away, not wanting to hear anymore of it.

"Cassandra." Rebekah calls out after her but it doesn't stop the girl who was now in a fit of rage.

"What is this place?" Stefan asks as they reach a seemingly abandoned tent as he looks around for anyone surrounding them.

"Anything to island gore, a group of college kids came here for spring break. A few weeks later they were all found completely drained of blood." Shane explains to them as he still looks at Cassandra who was far away from the whole group.

"Well, tragic for them, brilliant for us. Who sleeps where?" Rebekah asks as she looks around but Damon only rolls his eyes.

"Well, that's lovely. There's a mystery man with a hatchet lurking in the woods and were gonna camp." Damon mumbles making Shane look at him.

"We're safer here than we are hiking in the dark." He tells the man but that just causes Damon to walk closer to him.

"Let's just keep going. You know? Get the cure, get in and get out. Where is it?" Damon asks making Shane scoff as he raises an eyebrow at him.

"How stupid do you think I am?" He asks making Damon squint his eyes a little bit.

"Stupid enough to raise an immortal witch so I'd say incredibly." Damon says with a fake smile on his face and Shane just stares at him for a second.

"I'm shocked you even want the cure given youve got the most to loose once Elena's human." Shane finished before looking over at Cassandra and walking away from Damon.

Cassandra was sitting on a log to herself, hearing the divine's voice inside of her. She didn't want to be powerful. She wanted to be human. To have a family. To grow old. And now she couldn't.

"I want to be human." She whispers to herself, her eyes full of tears as she couldn't believe she searched for nothing.

You want to be powerful.

"You tried to kill my fiance." Cassandra snaps, hating how she was so close to killing Klaus.

Fine. I promise not to hurt your lover. Or your friends. Just become one with me. You know you want to.

Cassandra had to think for a second. If Shane was right and she could control the divines powers, maybe she would be able to keep the people she loved safe. Nothing would be able to mess with her again.

"Can we really stop Silas from coming back?" She asks, wondering if it was even possible to take his power away.

If we stop his power, if we take it. He won't be able to come back.

"What if It goes wrong." She knew it was a risky thing, especially with some many people around. If they tried to take his power and fail? Silas would kill them.

Silas knows how powerful we are. We can join him

"You didn't want him back earlier." Cassandra mumbles, not understanding why the divine was suddenly pro Silas as she didn't seem to like him yesterday.

I changed my mind.

"If I let you control for two seconds to do the spell, you let me have control back. I want to make the decision, not you just taking my body over without me knowing." Cassandra tells her, wanting to make the decision on her own. If it fails and the divine tries to forcefully take her over, Damon would kill her.

Okay. I know you'll do what's right, Cassandra.

"Who are you talking to?" Stefan asks as he had wandered over after seeing the girl alone. Cassandra jumps a little bit but collects herself before turning to meet Stefan's curious eyes.

"Myself, hoping Kol is out there listening." She lies, a sad smile on her lips making Stefan frown. He nods as he sits down next to her, bringing her into his side and letting her head rest on his shoulder.
