CHAPTER TEN
"Its pure darkness. You can't get rid of it. You can't kill it."
β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’
EVERYONE HAD RUSHED OVER TO KLAUS'S HOUSE THE SECOND BONNIE ANNOUNCED SHE KNEW WHAT THE MARK WAS. It didn't matter what side they were on about the cure, all they cared about was finding out what was wrong with her and fixing it. All eyes land on Kol as he enters the house making him roll his eyes.
"The only reason I am here is because I'm worried about Cassandra." Kol tells them as he crossed his arms against his chest. Bonnie rushed over to him, pressing a quick kiss to his lips, luckily neither Salvatore's were present because they would definitely tell Elena.
"Were you with her?" Bonnie asks curiously and Kol just nods his head before rubbing her back, wanting to start telling them what she found out. "It's the mark of the divine." She announced like it was something that everyone knew but everyone just stared at her.
"The what?" Octavia asks as her eyebrows furrowed, never once hearing that name.
"It's a form of darkness, dark magic. It was once a person but after the execution, it transformed into a mark and branded itself into someone else." Bonnie explains the lure as everyone was still trying to grasp what the mark actually was and what it could do to Cassandra.
"So it's dark magic?" Elijah asks, confused as why it was inside of Cassandra since she wasn't a witch. Although her mother was so maybe that's why the divine was inside of her and it's been there since before she turned.
"It's pure darkness." Bonnie states making everyone look around, knowing that wasn't good at all. "You can't kill it, you can't get rid of it." She says with a sigh as she knew it wasn't the greatest news but at least they knew what it was.
"That's bloody great isn't it." Rebekah grumbles as she rolls her eyes, heading to get a drink since this conversation obviously wasn't going anywhere.
"Can we transfer it to someone else?" Nathan suggests as maybe that was the easiest solution, at least they wouldn't have to deal with it directly.
"The divine has one host and one host only. It leeches onto their life force and does everything to protect their host from imminent death." Bonnie explains, frowning as she also wished there was another way but unfortunately it stuck with her forever
"So, this darkness.. it's tainting Cassandra?" Klaus asks cautiously, still trying to wrap his head around everything. It would explain her thoughts telling her to kill people close to her.
"It's warping her mind into doing things that Cassandra wouldn't necessarily do but things that will ultimately help the divine get its end goal." She tells them as they all process the information.
"Which is what?" Katherine asks as she puts her hands on her hips, wanting to get to the part where they could actually help Cassandra.
"To become one with Cassandra." Bonnie answers, noticing the glum looks on everyone's faces. "If the divine and Cassandra allow each other in.. it'll be unstoppable." She states, holding Kol's hand as he seemed to be not handling the information well.
"How do they become one?" He asks her as he looks down at her, his eyes full of concern as he was thinking about his conversation with Cassandra. Had it already happened?
"Cassandra has to give into the temptation of the divine, and once she does, she will be pure darkness walking the earth." Bonnie tells them making everyone share looks. That definitely was not a good thing especially with the news of Silas also being risen from the dead.
"There is no way to kill it?" Klaus asks as he rubs his face, wondering why he had never heard of this divine throughout his whole life. And why did it only show up now?
"There is." Bonnie says hesitantly as it wasn't exactly a great way. "The Divine can't live without their host." She mumbles making everyones eyes widen. The only way to kill it was to kill Cassandra?
"No. No we're not killing her." Nathan objects right away, everyone agreeing with him as they were not going to kill her because of something inside of her that she couldn't control.
"I didn't suggest we did." Bonnie says with a sigh before rubbing her face. "Look, I can contain the divine inside of Cassandra for a little while until we figure it out." She tells them as she opens her book.
"Okay, how?" Elijah asks as they all walk closer to her to hear what she has for a plan.
"Well, I cant exactly do the spell on her or else the divine could end up taking full control and killing us all. But I did find a spell that if I put it on someone's lips and she kisses them, we could contain it." Bonnie explains it, knowing it sounded weird but it was the best way to take the divine by surprise.
"Okay, so we spell Klaus's lips." Katherine points out the obvious as Klaus nods, he was fine with being spelled if it meant helping Cassandra.
"That's the issue. The Divine is already on alert, it'll detect it from a mile away if it's on someone that she kisses on a daily basis. But if it's someone who the divine wouldn't suspect would kiss her, the spell could slip by undetected." Bonnie explains the conundrum making Klaus glare at the witch as his fists tighten.
"So, you want someone to kiss my fiance." He asks, obviously not okay with this, especially if it was someone inside of this room.
"You can pick, but it has to be the last person who Cassandra would ever suspect and who she can't kill." She tells him making everyone look at her confused over the last part she said.
"Why that she can't kill?" Katherine asks confused as she tilts her head.
"Because Cassandra will definitely kill anyone who tries to kiss her." Bonnie points out the obvious, divine or not, Cassandra won't take lightly to someone just randomly kissing her.
"Okay, well there's only a limited selection of people who can't die." Octavia says with a sigh as she looks around the room at the originals. "It can't be Klaus.. Elijah would still be too detectable so..." She trails off, all of their eyes shifting to Kol who was swishing the alcohol around in his cup. Feeling the eyes on him, he looks up confused.
"You're up sweetheart." Bonnie says with a smile, patting his back, knowing he would not agree to it one bit.
"What?" Kol asks with a scoff, raising his eyebrows at them. They couldn't be serious. "No." He immediately denies, shaking his head frantically. "Nuh-uh, no way." He goes to to leave but Katherine grabs his arm to stop him.
"Come on, Kol. You're the last person she'd ever suspect." She points out as everyone knew that they were very close but physical affection wasn't exactly their thing with each other.
"Yeah, because it's fucking disgusting." Kol admits as he crossed his arms, surprised that Klaus wasnt speaking up. "I'm not doing it." He tells them as he shakes his head. Klaus honestly only trusted Kol to do it because of the fact that him and Cassandra were so disgusted by each other in that way. "We can't even hug guys, how do you expect me to kiss her?" He groans out as he shivers at the thought of having to be physical with Cassandra.
"Just picture she's Bonnie." Nathan suggests with a shrug as if it as the easiest thing in the world.
"No." Kol scoffs as he looks down at his girlfriend who was staring up at him with pleading eyes.
"Kol, I'm giving you permission to do this, you'll save her life." Klaus tells him as he sighs, staring at Kol who grumbles at that. He didn't want his permission.
"But.." he trails off, practically pouting like a toddler. "It'll be gross." Kol points out making Katherine groan as she rolls her eyes
"Oh, my god. Are we five?" She asks annoyed at his behaviour. "Suck it up." Katherine says as she pats Kol on the back. He only takes a deep breath but nods, looking down at Bonnie who automatically started doing the spell because they knew they didn't have much time.
They all lounged around in the house, trying to act as natural as they could as they waited for Cassandra to show up. Luckily they didn't have to wait too long as she came bursting in, stopping suddenly when she felt all the eyes on her. "Where's Kol." She asks without hesitation as she didn't see him among the group.
"Why?" Klaus asks as he looks at his fiance who didn't even spare him a second glance. Cassandra squints her eyes, glancing around the room. Feeling an essence, she becomes more alert, hearing the floorboard crack from behind her. Turning around, she vamp speeds Kol towards the wall, her eyes trained on him. Her fingers lift up, hovering over his lips for a moment as she closes her eyes. Once she feels it, a sinister laugh leaves her lips.
"A spell?" She asks, raising an eyebrow before her eyes move to Bonnie who gulps. Bonnie didn't think she would be able to spot it, unless she was already too far gone. Cassandra let's Kol go and instead goes for Bonnie instead. Everyone gets up but cassandra only waves her hand causing everyone to become paralyzed in their spot.
"What the hell?" Rebekah asks as her eyes widen. Everyone was shocked at the sudden power that came from Cassandra which could only mean one thing. The divine was taking her over.
"C-cassandra." Bonnie pleads as she is being suffocated against the wall
"Cassandra." She mimics Bonnie's voice before a smirk forms on her lips and she laughs at the girl. "Please, do you hear yourself?" Cassandra asks as she rolls her eyes a little bit, staring at her.
"Let her go!" Kol yells at her, trying to move but It was no use. Whatever was used, it was very powerful.
"You wanted to succumb me, huh? To capture me?" Cassandra asks as she scoffs, taking a step closer so she was looking directly in Bonnie's eyes. "Too late." She whispers before laughing, Bonnie's eyes filling with tears. "You see, little miss Cassandra is still in here, I'm not fully in control yet but I will be." She says as she taps her head before dropping Bonnie to the ground making her cough violently, trying to get air. "She will become one with me." Cassandra states with a smirk as she looks around the room.
"Cassandra!" Klaus tries to catch her attention but Cassandra only turns back to bonnie, her eyes turning black for a split second.
"I'll be back for you." She warns before speeding out, the spell wearing off as everyone drops to the ground, being left with the aftermath of whatever the hell just happened.
β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’
THE DIVINE WAS HAVING A BLAST FINALLY HAVING THE CONTROLS IN CASSANDRA'S BODY. She could finally get the work down that they were set to accomplish. Cassandra still had some free will but it was overpowered by the will of the divine. And when the divine gets her to become one, nothing could turn her back.
"Your town is so cute." She says, looking around with a smirk as she watches all the innocent people move around her. "You're fiance is cute too." Klaus had tried to get through to her but it didn't work, she was too deep. "We'll see if he still is when I drive that stake through his heart." Cassandra finishes talking with a laugh as she walks into the Mystic Grill. Looking around, she looks for a good bite to eat.
"Cassandra?" A voice asks making Cassandra hesitate for a moment before turning towards the voice to see it was Caroline who had called her, Stefan being beside her.
"Stefan! Caroline!" Cassandra put on her best voice as she walks over to them, crossing her arms. "What are you guys doing here?" She asks as she glances around, noticing how there wasn't many people in here at this time.
"We could ask you the same question." Stefan says slowly, his eyes slowly squinting as he noticed that some of her mannerisms were different but decided it was nothing.
"Just looking for Kol." Cassandra says as she shrugs her shoulders, knowing Kol wouldve tried to follow her but she didn't need him. She needed the stake.
"Are you okay?" Caroline asks as she notices something flicker in her eyes but it was too fast for her to make out what it was.
"I'm fine, why do you ask?" She raises an eyebrow at Caroline who clears her throat, noticing something was definitely off with her.
"We've been trying to call you." She states as she squints her eyes lightly, her eyes scanning Cassandra once but she couldn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary.
"My phone must be off." Cassandra says as she checks her phone, showing them the pitch black screen. Stefan and Caroline share a worried look before the Salvatore takes a step closer.
"Cassandra?" Stefan catches her attention, a light smile on his face. "Are you sure you're okay?" He asks, worried about her and suddenly he recieved a text. Cassandra only looks at him as he reads it, his face changing dramatically.
"Caroline." He whispers as he tilted his phone towards her so she could see the message.
Cassandra is not herself! Don't trust her!
"You know what, Care?" Cassandra says and before either of them could do anything, Cassandra lifts her hand up to their foreheads and warps their mind. "I'm not okay." She says with a dramatic sigh before smiling at both of them. "I want you to find Kol Mikaelson and get the white oak stake from him,Β if you fail to do so in thirty minutes, I want you both to take a stake and stab it through your heart." She explains to them carefully making the two of them nod their heads at her directions.
"And if Kol tries to stop you. Kill him too."
β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’
NO ONE HAD LEFT THE HOUSE SINCE CASSANDRA HAD SPED OUT AFTER THREATENING BONNIE. They were trying to figure out what they should do now that the spell obviously wasn't going to contain the divine. There was nothing they could do. Cassandra didn't even seem like she was in there. "What are we gonna do?" Katherine asks as she knew they wasn't her best friend. She didn't even know if that was even a soul.
"She's way past gone." Kol mumbles as he shakes his head, knowing there was nothing they could do except to kill her which wasn't an option so they were practically screwed unless someone made the decision.
"No, the divine said she didn't have full control yet. Cassandra is still in there." Bonnie tells them, knowing they could get her back but they really had to try. She didn't know how hard it would be but she didn't care."We need to be her back." She adds but it wasn't the most convincing argument.
"And how do you suggest we do that?" Rebekah asks with a sigh as she crossed her arms, not knowing of a way to make a mystical darkness stop possessing your friend.
"With me." Klaus says as he offers himself up. It was the only way they were going to hopefully get her back. If he could just jog her memory. "But I'll need the stake." He adds, glancing at Kol who just stares at him like he's gone made. Why would he willingly go to a evil creature with the one weapon that could kill him?
"What are you gonna do?" Elijah asks as she wasn't on board with the plan to bring the stake either.
"If there's even a small piece of her left, I can bring her out." Klaus tries to convince himself too but he didn't seem to be doing a good job. His eyes drift to his brother who was still a little uncertain. "Kol." He says making him sigh as he nods his head.
"I'll come with you." Kol says making Bonnie open her mouth but he only shakes his head at her.
"The rest of you will stay here out of harm's way." Klaus tells them, not needing anyone else to be in danger than there had to be. "And--" Suddenly the door opens making him stop his sentence. They look over to see Stefan and Caroline walking in.
"Ah, you two finally joining the party?" Nathan asks, his eyes landing on Caroline but it seems that she just looked right past him making him furrow his eyebrows confused.
"Where's Kol?" Stefan asks as his eyes scan the room. Kol clears his throat, raising his hand.
"Right here next to my beautiful girlfriend." Kol says with a chuckle, standing next to Bonnie but he diminishes after he realizes that they were both acting weird.
"Wheres the stake." Caroline asks in a monotone voice making Kol furrow his eyebrows as he only shrugs his shoulders. He wasn't just going to give away the location. Suddenly Caroline and Stefan speed over to him making Kol fall to the ground. Klaus speeds over, grabbing Caroline as Elijah and Nathan go for Stefan. Caroline fights against Klaus until they both see the time. Suddenly they stop resisting against them making everyone just stare at then confused. Stefan nods his head at Caroline before the both walk over to the drawer where the keep the stakes, both taking one out. Everyone is a little cautious as they watch what they were gonna do. All of a sudden, the stakes are pointed towards them. Katherine and octavia waste no time in speeding over and snapping their necks so they didn't kill themselves.
"Were they compelled?" Nathan asks confused as he keeps his foot on Stefan for a little longer before lifting it off.
"That's impossible." Elijah says as he shakes his head, the only people who he knew could compel other vampires were him and his siblings.
"It's one of the divines powers. Mind control." Bonnie answers the question making everyone groan. Of course it was.
"Well, isn't that just great." Octavia mutters as they all stare down at Stefan and Caroline a unconscious bodies. If she could do mind control and paralyze people, what other dangers are lurking within?
β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’Β°β’
KOL WAS WAITING OUTSIDE, peeking through the window of the grill where Klaus had entered. Klaus had told him to stay outside unless it was absolutely necessary for him to come inside. Kol agreed but it didn't mean he liked sending him in alone with the only weapon that could kill him. Cassandra seemed to sense his presence, smirking as she lifts her head, standing up from the table. "Klaus Mikaelson." She says with a soft chuckle, licking her bottom lip before turning around to face him. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" Cassandra asks as she raises an eyebrow at him. Klaus only stares at her for a moment before taking a step closer.
"Cassandra, I need you to listen to me." Klaus says softly making Cassandra roll her eyes as she knew exactly what he was trying to do. "If you're in there, I need you to fight." He tells her, gulping as he takes another step closer. "For me. For your friends. For yourself." He finishes and Cassandra only yawns, obviously not impressed by his tactic.
"Be quiet." She groans out, not wanting to hear any more sweet crap. Cassandra smirks at the man before pointing to her head. "She's not in here." Cassandra tells him as she steps closer to him, challenging him as he was supposedly supposed to be the most powerful creature on the planet, well that's awake.
"We'll see about that." Klaus responds as he clenches his jaw a little bit. Cassandra only laughs as she shakes her head, going to turn back around but Klaus speeds towards her, grabbing her in a choke hold. Cassandra rolls her eyes before flicking her wrist and tossing him across the room. Klaus immediately gets up, his eyes boring into hers.
"Cassandra, I know you're in there!" He calls out but Cassandra yet again doesn't take any interest in his desperate pleas. Klaus suddenly has her against the wall, his hand around her throat. Cassandra glared at him before grabbing his hand and snapping it, kicking him to the ground. Klaus groans in pain but doesn't let that stop him. "Don't let her take over!" He tries again, his voice cracking as he looks up at the girl. Cassandra rolls her eyes, looking down at him before her eyes land on something interesting. Klaus knew what she spotted so he caught her hand when she went to take it. He shows his hybrid face, throwing her across the room and making her crash into the shelf.
Cassandra growls before moving her fingers so all the chair legs broke off before sending them flying towards Klaus. A couple of them flying into him. Klaus growls, yanking some out before attacking her, banging her head against the bar before throwing her across the tables. Cassandra lands on the ground painfully but gets up quickly as she glared at him. She charges at him, tackling him to the ground sending the stake flying across the floor. Klaus watches it with his eyes before they look at each other. Cassandra punches him in the face before going to rush after that stake but Klaus grabs her legs, pulling her back. Cassandra turns around, using her leg to kick him back. She grabs the chair that was next to her, smashing it against Klaus.
Cassandra moves the stake towards her, grabbing a hold of it as she stands up, leaning over Klaus. He glares before suddenly transforming and grabbing a hold of her arm, snapping it causing a pained noise to leave her. Cassandra uses the momentum of her other hand to make his insides start twisting and breaking. Klaus yells out in agony making Cassandra smirk. She leans down, straddling him as she ups the pain. Klaus goes to grab the stake but she only grabs a wooden leg and stabs it through his one good hand. Klaus looks at her, his eyes searching here's for any sign that Cassandra was in there. Right now. There was nothing. Just darkness. Cassandra takes the stake in both hands, gripping her fingers around it. She smirks, a sickly laugh leaving her lips as she couldn't believe she was about to kill the supposed to be most powerful creature. Cassandra leans down towards his ear.
"Bye, bye, Wolfy." She says with a smirk as she raises the stake. Klaus stares up at her, silent as a million emotions run through his eyes. Cassandra falters a little, going to bring the stake down but instead of it landing in his chest, she tossed it across the room. Klaus let's out the breath he didn't know he was holding in. Cassandra shakes her head a little bit before her eyes land back down on Klaus.
"Nik?" She asks, tears brewing in her eyes as she strokes his cheek. Klaus smiles at her, breathing heavily as he nods his head.
"Cassandra?" He double checks that it is actually her, but he saw the pure emotion in her eyes, something you didn't see with the divine.
"I-i--m so sorry." She apologized, tears flowing down her cheeks as she gets off of him, not knowing how this thing even got in control of her. Klaus sits up slowly, still in pain but he brings her into him.
"It's okay. It's okay." He assures her, knowing it wasn't her fault what had happened and he didn't blame her for anything. Kol comes inside, smiling as he sees Cassandra back to her old self but Klaus only raises an eyebrow at him. "Now you come in?" Klaus asks, painfully holding his side as he stares at Kol who sheepishly smiles at him.
"What? I totally believed that you had that."
