B2-Part 19: Blessing And A Curse
"There goes my heart beating
'Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
And there goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now"
~Calum Scott
3rd Person's POV
"Mila Stacey..."
Mila jumps in fright looking behind her in the elevator. She smiles at Harry holding her hand to her chest.
"Harry! You scared me."
He chuckles, "Sorry about that."
Harry stands staring at Mila as if he was trying to figure something out. Mila shifts from one foot to the other as she starts to feel the heat of his gaze.
"So... I didn't know you were an old friend of Peter's."
"Yeah. Childhood friends."
Mila nods, "Me too. Well middle school. He was my best friend... Anyways, Um is it okay if I leave a little early? I'm kind of in a rush."
"Yeah of course. Is something wrong?"
"No, no of course not. I just ran into Peter just now and there's somethings we have to talk about so..."
"Ah... I thought you two had broken up."
"Yeah. Yes, we had. It's- it's just..."
"It's complicated."
"Complicated. One hundred percent."
"I mean, it's Peter. Heh. Everything's always complicated with Peter."
"Yeah." She laughs shaking her head.
Harry smiles then immediately drops his grin and stares at her with a blank face, "But that's why he needs you."
Mila frowns furrowing her eyebrows in confusion, "Sorry?
"That's why he needs you... Right? To help him make his choices clear."
"I'm not sure I'm understanding..." Mila chuckles uncomfortably trying not to make eye contact with Harry.
DING
Kari, "1st floor."
Mila gulps trying to smile as she chuckles nervously, "I gotta go... see ya Harry."
As she quickly hurries out the elevator door, Harry chuckles to himself thinking.
...
"Mr. Osborn."
Harry lays in his penthouse as he looks around confused.
"Look up."
Glancing up, he sees Spider-Man upside down. He flips around and sits in a chair by the window.
"Think you're looking for me."
Harry smiles shaking his head as he stands up, "I cannot believe my eyes. Spider-Man. Just the man I wanted to see. You, um... talked to Peter?"
Harry sits beside Spider-Man drinking from a glass he had just poured.
"Yeah. I wanna help you, Mr. Osborn. I really, really do... But I can't give you my blood."
Harry's eye twitches.
Spider-Man sighs shaking his head, "Not right now."
"Excuse me?" Harry's smile completely vanishes as he looks at Spider-Man in anger.
"It's too dangerous. If our blood is incompatible, you could die."
"I'm already dying. Your blood can't make me die more."
"But it could do something worse."
Harry nods cracking his neck before giving an annoyed smirk, "Okay. All right, how much?"
Spider-Man tilts his head in question, "How much what?"
"How much do you want? Name it. You want a boat? You want a plane? You want money? How much do you want?"
"I don't want your money."
"Come on. Everybody wants my money!"
"I don't."
Harry scoffs, "I thought you... I thought you were supposed to save people."
Spider-Man sighs and stands up.
"I thought that's what you do, is you save people's lives. You're... You're just gonna let me die." Harry stands as well.
"I'm trying to protect you right now."
"No. No, you are not. You're trying to protect yourself."
"Look, we just need a bit more time to figure out something else."
"I do not have time!"
Harry angrily throws his glass making Spider-Man move his head slightly. The glass hits the tv behind him and ricochets back to hit Harry in the face. He groans looking at Spider-Man in disbelief.
"I'm sorry." Spider-Man quickly leaps up and shoots himself out a window before seeming like swings away into the city. But really he stuck to the wall outside and listened as Harry had a breakdown.
"You're a fraud, Spider-Man!" Harry starts overturning tables and throwing stuff before falling onto the couch defeated.
Peter sighs sadly knowing this was a tough decision. But he would try to run tests and figure something out.
He swings back home and immediately starts going through his fathers work. He goes through some files of his fathers on his computer disk and frowns finding a video.
...
Mila walks down the street quickly as she pops a mint into her mouth. She had left her apartment late because of morning sickness and now hurrying down the street was making her more nauseous.
"Ugh!"
Mila jumps as Peter swings through the air then hits the wall behind her. She holds her hand over her chest shaking her head.
"Geez Peter, are you alright?"
"Hey! Yeah no. I gotta talk to you for a second."
Mila raises an eyebrow but continues to walk, "Okay well walk and talk because I'm running late right now."
"It's just gonna take a second."
Shaking her head she continues walking leaving him behind, "I can't, I waited for you to talk last night on the phone and you didn't. So, I'm sorry, Peter."
Peter groans following after Mila as she goes inside a building.
"Shit I'm sorry. That call went totally over my head. I apologize for making you wait." He lightly grabs her arm making her freeze in her spot, "Just give me one minute. I just wanna say one thing and I'm gone."
Mila frowns looking at his pleading face, "Pete I have to be-"
Peter holds Mila's hand gaining her full attention, "Everything's a mess."
"And you're gonna continue anyways, fantastic," Mila smiles looking at Peter.
"Everything's insane!"
"Shh a little quieter." Her thumb rubs his hand as she can see him start to freak out.
"Sorry... My dad, my mom. Everything I thought about them? Lies. Ha Ha! Lies. Lies, lies, lies. Nothing makes any sense anymore."
"Okay... I'm sorry, I'm not understanding Peter. Can you explain to me what exactly is going on?"
Mila knew she was late. Hell she didn't care that this was making her later, she hoped that it might impact the chances of her getting this scholarship... then she would stay in New York. And stay with Peter... by default. It was hard for her to make a decision between going and leaving. She knew what was the healthy idea but what her heart chose... that was a different idea.
"I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with Harry. Of course I wanna save him. You know?"
"Uh huh..."
"I wanna save him because he's my best pal."
"I know Petey boy. But-"
Peter shakes his head, "And what if my blood works? But what if it doesn't? I don't know. I got no idea."
Peter starts laughing to himself as if he was slowly going crazy as Mila chuckles nervously along with him.
"Oh, God," Mila groans as Peter let's go of her hand and grips his hair, shaking his head.
"I got nothing... I got nothing."
"Bab- um Peter j-just calm down okay..."
"I can't calm down, Ror. The only thing I keep coming back to, is..."
"Ms. Stacey?"
Mila's head snaps over to the receptionist at the desk a couple feet away. Peter frowns not realizing where they were.
"Shall I take you upstairs?"
Mila smiles, "Yes. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, I'm already late. But um... Can I have just one more minute?"
The woman smiles nodding before sitting back down, "Okay."
"Thank you. I'm sorry." Mila looks over at a totally confused Peter who starts looking at the decorations and flags all around, "Ahem... Okay Pete, I have to be-"
"Where are we?" Peter whispers.
Mila rubs his arm chuckling lowly to herself so that she doesn't lose it, "I'm at my last interview thing for Oxford right now. You remember I told you... the verbal test."
Peter's eyes widen as he slowly starts to take a few steps back, "Oxford. Shoot I remember. I'm sorry I did forget... no I didn't forget. I just got the dates mixed up."
Mila frowns, "It's been a day Peter..."
"I know... I'm so sorry."
"I know. It's okay."
"Oh. Okay, well..." Peter turns to the receptionist, "I'm sorry to bother you, uh, my fair lady... Madam."
"Fair lady? Peter shut up." Mila slaps his arm.
Peter dodges another slap from Mila as he shrugs nonchalantly, "But who am I?"
"Nobody asked... nobody," Mila whispers shaking her head.
"I mean, who am I? I'm John Hopkins."
"Oh please no."
"I'm one of the young professors at Harvard, and I've been trying to get her to be in my..."
Mila's mouth drops in shock. On the inside she was dying of laughter but on the outside, she couldn't believe he was still talking.
"Be a part of my team for a while now."
"Huh?"
"And she's just the best person I know and a scientific genius. And... Anyway, God save the queen."
"Would you shut up? Stop it," Mila smiles nervously at the woman, "I'm so sorry about all this... Can you wait one more minute?"
The woman nods making Mila grab Peter's hand and pull him farther away. She frown letting him go as he looks at her thinking.
"Peter..."
Peter stood still in his head.
"Peter..."
"Huh?"
"What do you want to say to me? What's the 'one thing'?"
Peter frowns thinking, 'I realized that losing you and the baby isn't worth it. I would try anything for another chance.'
Mila sighs as Peter stays quiet, "Pete I have to go to England. I worked hard for this, it's important to me. I mean, I don't know... honestly I would love to stay here but it's not healthy. I-I can't stay here and go through this cycle. I can't stay here and do nothing. Maybe we're on different paths right now. You know? I don't know. I want to... I want to know that I'm wanted."
"Mila you are wanted. I swear you are." Peter frowns.
"Maybe it'll be better that we're going different ways, Peter. I don't... I know me losing my dad was hard... but I lost you too. And I don't think I'm strong enough to stay here and see you everyday knowing that I can't be with you and you can't be with me without being hurt by my father's promise. You have heal and accept and move on... But I've gotta go. I gotta go, Peter."
Mila goes to turn around with teary eyes as Peter bites his lip shaking his head.
"Mila."
Looking at Peter with hopeful eyes, Mila raises an eyebrow.
"Good luck." He holds a thumbs up, feeling his heart completely break.
Of course he wanted to say anything and everything to make her stay, but that wouldn't be fair to her. She worked for this. Like she said, she can't stay here and do nothing.
Mila frowns, then sighs slowly walking back over to Peter. She leans forward and lightly kisses his cheek before smiling sadly at him.
"Thank you for everything Peter."
...
"Hi, Petey boy, it's me. Uh, I got in to Oxford. Woo-hoo no surprise I already told you I would. But um... It's very exciting. I came by your house a little bit ago and I, um...You weren't there, and so I'm on my way to the airport right now, because there's this early summer class that I found out about, and I thought that it would somehow be easier, I guess, this way. Goodbyes are really hard for me. Um anyways... we can at some point talk about the little nugget... well sorry I forgot you don't know who I'm talking about but I'm sure you can assume. Yeah I am screwing up this voice message and I'm sure it's gonna cut me off soon. But the baby conversation we should have. Okay? I'm not doing any of this because I don't love you. It's actually because I do, and maybe it's just time to let it go and to think of myself and now to think about little nugget so, um... Okay, bye."
Peter sits on his front porch listening to the voice message from Mila over and over again.
"Wow you look like shit."
Peter glances up seeing Mj standing on her porch frowning.
"Thanks. Yeah thank you for that."
"Why are you torturing yourself? You two love each other... you always came back to one another. Always."
"I don't know if I'm good enough for her."
"Bullshit. You know she doesn't care if you are or aren't. She loves you more than anything and anyone in the world. All she needed was you. You were perfect to her. Any flaw you had she overlooked it."
"I don't want to hurt her anymore."
"Then go after her. And don't ever let her go again."
Peter watches Mj walk back inside her house. He frowns playing with the ring on his finger as Aunt May walks out the house.
She sits down beside Peter and sighs, "So you missed her..."
Peter nods.
"You're a good boy Peter. Very bright, very smart. But not right now, right now you're being an idiot. That girl brings out a light in you. She brings out the best in you and you bring out the best of her. I've never seen her smile bigger than she does with you. She saw a future with you."
"May-"
"I know Peter... you don't want her hurt."
Peter frowns confused at what May was speculating.
May rolls her eyes, "I do the laundry of the house you don't think I wouldn't notice a red and blue superhero costume?"
"I do my laundry..." Peter frowns.
"You... Mhmm sure Mr American flag. You may do it now but who do you think put your clothes in the dryer while you were at school?"
Peter stares at her with wide eyes, "You knew?"
"Honey, I'm not an idiot. Plus I know how Mila acts around you. You really expect me to believe she's that comfortable around a strange man in a costume."
"TouchΓ©... you and Blair should have tea sometime. You'd get along tremendously."
May smiles sadly placing her hand on top of his, "Peter have you told her you love her?"
"Of course I have. I told her all the time."
"Well... tell her again. And this time you stay by her side and you mean it."
...
"You alright ?"
Mila nods glancing over at her sister, "Yeah I'm fine. Thanks for coming all the way back here to take the flight with me."
Gwen smiles nodding, "No problem. I needed the break anyways."
Mila had been so surprised when her sister walked into her room one night ago. This had been after Mila's time at the hospital and before the Max situation. When Peter was at Mila's apartment, Gwen was at Mj's house.
Gwen and Mila had spent the day together before Mila's Oxford meeting and then Gwen had been her shoulder to cry on after the meeting.
"How's the nugget?"
"Gwen I'm not that far along." Mila smiles.
"What did the doctor say?"
Mila thinks back to when she was almost hit with a dumpster. The doctor had confidentially told her about being pregnant. She had no idea and wasn't sure how to tell everyone.
"The Doctor said I was 10 weeks."
"So 2 and a half months pregnant. Generally not a definitely two and a half. But around there?"
"Yep."
"How did you not know?"
Mila shrugs, "I'm not sure. I didn't really have morning sickness. I mean there's still time, and I had it yesterday... but I was so stressed out and depressed that I didn't even realize that I didn't get my period."
Gwen chuckles, "You are so oblivious sometimes. I can't wait until he's here!"
Mila raises an eyebrow, "How do you know lil nugget is a boy?"
"I just feel it... so how do you think it's gonna work out between you two with nugget?"
"I'm not sure," Mila sighs, "I obviously love him. And I would've stayed if he didn't try to shield me away from everything... including himself. I think we will both be good parents but I'm not sure-"
"Hey... It's Spider-Man." The cab driver says looking out the passenger window.
"Stop the cab." Gwen orders as she smiles now also looking out the window.
"Lady, I ain't even moving."
"Oh my gosh. He didn't..." Gwen smiles as she glances at a confused Mila.
"Who didn't? And didn't what?"
"Just get out the car."
Mila frowns before opening the door and walking around the car to Gwen's side. Her mouth falls open as she stares at the bridge across from them in shock.
'I choose you, I love you.'
Mila eyes water as she smiles so wide her cheeks began to hurt.
"Heads up." Gwen smiles as she sees Peter swinging towards them.
She quickly takes Mila's purse just as Peter swipes her up off the ground and swings them to the other bridge.
"Ah young love..."
"Hi." Peter takes off his mask and smiles down at a grinning Mila.
"Hi."
Mila wasn't surprised she wasn't scared at the moment. She knew Peter would always save her. He would always catch her. Her fear of heights wasn't a thing when Peter was around.
"Did you get my message?" His hand rubs her back as she has her arms wrapped around his neck.
Mila gives him a confused look before smiling, "What message?"
"The message right there." Peter points done at the bridge underneath them.
Mila giggles, "Oh, that. That was you?"
Peter grins shaking his head, "Don't do that."
"I'm sorry Peter, I couldn't make it out."
Peter pecks her lips before leaning his forehead against her, "Oh you couldn't make it out? That's okay... I'll tell you what it says."
"Okay tell me..." Mila's thumb grazes the back of his neck as she stares into his big brown doe eyes.
"It says, 'I choose you, love you.' Because I do... I'm way past enthralled by you, Ror. I can't function without you. I'm in love you with you, Mila Rory Stacey. I always will be. Being in love with you is a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because I get to see that smile everyday. I get to kiss you and to hold you. And to hear your adorable laugh and snort. I get to listen to you ramble about anything and everything. And now I get to be by your side when we raise a mini me."
Mila smiles, "We don't need a mini you..."
Peter chuckles, "Too bad and way too late."
Mila laughs then shakes head, "And what about the curse?"
"The curse of loving you is knowing that I can't live without you. I've been a mess without you. I don't know what I would do if you weren't here. I don't know where I'd be... a day without you, Mila Rory Stacey, is a day without breath. And no offense, but you're wrong."
"I'm wrong about what?"
"You're wrong about us being on different paths. We're not on different paths. You're my path. And you're always gonna be my path. You and him..." Peter moves his hand to Mila's belly as he caresses her slightly showing stomach, "you two are one of the most important things in my life. And I know there's a million reasons why we shouldn't be together. I know that. But I'm tired of them. I'm tired of every single one of them. I'm tired of pushing you away, pushing my feelings away. We've all gotta make a choice. Right?"
"Right..."
"Well, like I said I choose you two. So here's my thought... England. Both of us... well sorry the three of us."
Mila chuckles running her hands through his hair as she stares at him lovingly.
"I'm following you now. I'm just gonna follow you everywhere." Peter grins feeling his heart elate as he watches Mila's glowing smile, "I'm just gonna follow you the rest of my life."
"This is a big step, Peter. A baby is life changing."
"You've already changed my life, Mila. For the better. What's one more change."
Mila pouts trying not to grin as hard, "What about Spider-Man?"
"I mean, they got crime there in England."
"Yeah." She nods.
"They got tons of crime, it seems."
"Tons."
"They got, uh, Jack the Ripper."
Mila giggles shaking her head.
Peter frowns jokingly, "What? They haven't caught Jack the Ripper yet. You didn't know that?"
As if time had stopped right there, as they stood...
As if no one else existed...
The two reveled in one another for a moment before leaning forward, warm lips capturing one another. Heat rose from Mila's stomach to her chest. Her heart skipped a beat upon the smell of him, most definitely hypnotic beyond reason. She parted her lips and felt him washing over like a wave of warmth. Her whole body tingled, the feel of his frame completely against hers as his arms wrapped around tightly.
She pulls away and quickly asks once more, "You're sure?"
"Ror I'm all in."
Mila smiles into the kiss as Peter pulls her in, claiming her mouth once again. He kissed her so hungry and intense, that she was beginning to feel her knees become weak. Peter became aware of her fingers, they had moved from his hair to caress his face, her skin smooth and radiating heat. He inwardly groans as her light touch makes tingles run down his spine.
He frowns pulling away slightly as his spidey sense tingles. He had learned the difference between the tingle that Mila gave him and his bad things are coming tingle.
They both look around as the city goes black for a second.
"What the hell is that?"
Mila frowns rubbing his arm, "Is that Max?"
"He must have cut the power to the whole city."
Mila sighs, "A hero's work is never done."
YALL... this story is almost over π
Mila and Peter make my heart hurt... they're way too cute
What did you think about May knowing?
Mj actually gave him good advice? Who would've thought...
Harry is losing it
Gwen is in New York
