24: Somebody That I Used To Know

"But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough"
~ Gotye

3rd Person's POV

At George Stacy's funeral, Peter hides on the roof of a building nearby and watches from a distance. Mila senses him and looks up but sees nothing.

Tears steam down her cheeks as she looks at her hands. She blanks out and finally goes back to when her mom softly rubs her bandaged arm.

"It'll be okay honey. We'll get through this."

Mila feels a hand squeeze hers. She glances to her left to see Gwen gripping onto her hand while staring at the casket as it is lowered into the ground.

Shots fire through the air making Mila flinch at every one. Helen rubs Mila's back. She knew the girl had a rough year and she hoped to God that this wouldn't break her.

Phillip helps his mom up and into the limo then walks over to Gwen and does the same. Phillip curses as he sees Mila still in her chair. It starts to rain and everyone begins to disperse from the funeral. Mila slides out her chair and sits on the wet ground staring down in the dirt hole at the casket holding the one person who had been a rock in her life... the one person who her birth mother trusted with her life... she didn't know how to cope with him being gone. It felt like she had not only lost him but lost the last thing she had that kept her close to her mother.

Now she was just lost.

Cora and Blair walk over to Mila as their parents leave.

"Mila hun, you wanna go?"

Mila just sits still and remains staring at the casket. Blair sighs and nods to Flash who makes his way over. Flash gently picks up her body and walks over to Phil.

"Thanks man."

"Of course. I'll be over later."

Phil nods and takes Mila from Flash. He bends down and places her in the limo. Gwen quickly pulls Mila into her arms and hugs her. Together the two cry feeling the same loss and pain.

...

"Why wasn't he there?"

The group of friends all look up and stare at each other before looking at Mila. She had finally come out of her zombie state and this is the first thing she said.

Cora looks at Phil whose eyes were still red. He had taken his fathers death really hard but he didn't want to show it. He needed to be strong for his family.

Phil clears his throat and looks at Mila who sits on her bed staring out the window, "I don't know Mila. I wish I could tell you. I really do. But I don't know. I wish everything would be okay. But that's life."

Mila lets out a small sob as she falls back into her bed. Blair immediately jumps onto the bed and hugs Mila. Cora then makes her way into the bed hugs the other side of Mila. Flash and Phil sit on the edge of the bed patting the girls legs as they have their moment.

"It'll be okay. In the end it'll all be okay."

...

Later that same day, Mila walks to Peter's house. She closes her umbrella as she stands underneath the covering. She knocks on the door and waits for him to answer but he doesn't.

Mila bends down and pushes open the mail slot on the door, "Peter Benjamin Parker, you open this door right now. I know you're home."

The door slowly opens making Mila take a few steps back. Peter had many scrapes on his face from the brawl with the lizard. His eyes were bloodshot and his hair disheveled.

"Where have you been?"

"I..." He looks away not answering.

Mila starts to tear up.

"My father died. There was a funeral. They shot off rifles and they made speeches. Two of my teachers showed up, Flash showed up... Everyone was there but you." Mila starts to cry as tears fall down her face, "You're my best friend... and you weren't there..."

Peter wipes away a tear from her face, but then stops and looks away.

"I can't do this Ro- Mila. I can't. I'm sorry."

Mila frowns, "What are you saying?"

"I can't see you anymore. I can't!"

Mila stares at him upset as he looks off. She lets out a sob and turns to start walking away. Putting up her umbrella, she then stops and turns to face him.

"He made you promise, didn't he?... To stay away from me? So I'd be safe."

Peter doesn't answer.

Mila shakes her head as more tears fall. She quickly walks off leaving Peter to watch her disappear down the street. After Mila leaves, Peter returns inside.

"She's such a beautiful, strong girl."

"Yeah. That's what Uncle Ben used to say."

Aunt May smiles lightly, "Did you finally ask her out?"

Peter shakes his head as a tear falls down his cheek.

May frowns, "Why?"

"I can't."

"Why?"

Peter shakes his head furiously, "I'm just no good for her."

Aunt May shakes her head in disagreement, "Peter Parker, if there's one thing you are, it's good. Anyone has a problem with that can talk to me. And Pete honey that girl... she loves you. Probably more than anything in the world. Anyone can see it. That's once in a lifetime... you don't let that go."

May leaves the living room. Peter sighs rubbing his face then goes upstairs. He lays on his bed and listens to the voice message that his uncle left him before he died.

"Peter, I know things have been difficult lately. And I'm sorry about that. I think I know what you're feeling. Ever since you were a little boy, you've been living with so many unresolved things. Well, take it from old man, those things send us down a road, they make us who we are. And if anyone's destined for greatness, it's you, son. You owe the world your gifts. You just have to figure out how to use them, and know that wherever they take you, we'll always be here. So, come on home, Peter. You're my hero, and I love you."

...

Back at school on Monday, Peter is going through his locker. In the corner of his eye, he sees Mila looking through hers. Suddenly, someone comes up behind Peter and pulls him into a hug.

"What's up Parker?"

Mila glances behind her seeing Flash hug Peter. She rolls her eyes and sighs then turns back to her locker.

"Hey Mila you okay?"

Mila glances beside her to see Cora and Blair.

"Yep I'm fine. I'll see you guys at lunch."

The two girls nod slowly then make their way to class.

"You coming along man?"

Peter nods with a small smile, "Yeah. That's a cool shirt."

Flash looks down at his shirt with the Spiderman logo, "Yeah... dudes crazy. The chicks dig him."

The bell goes off making everyone hurry to their classes. Mila closes her locker and looks down at her books as she walks past Flash and Peter.

Peter watches her leave with a frown. He bites the inside of his cheek trying his hardest not to say anything. He wanted to talk to her so bad. He wanted to apologize. He wanted to start over.

Flash nudges Peter's arm making him look away from Mila who turns the corner.

"Dude go talk to her."

"What?"

"She's liked you since middle school Parker. Talk to her before you lose her for good."

Flash pats Peter's shoulder before jogging down the hall to his class. Peter scratches his head, sighing. He looks up at the ceiling with a groan.

"What do I do?"

Mila flips through her book listening to Miss Ritter as she goes on and on about who knows what. Peter then shows up late making Miss Ritter bring everyone's attention to him.

"Mr. Parker, tardy again."

Peter walks past Mila and sits behind her.

"Well, at least we can always count on you."

"Sorry, Miss Ritter. It won't happen again, I promise."

Miss Ritter points at him with a fierce look, "Don't make promises you can't keep, Mr. Parker."

The teacher turns her back to the class. Peter leans forward slightly and whispers so that Mila can hear.

"Yeah, but those are the best kind."

Mila freezes and slightly turns to look at him. He nods slowly. Mila smiles lightly and turns her attention back to the front of the room. Her cheeks heat up as she thinks about what Peter just said.

"You really mean that." She whispers so he can hear.

"You're worth it."

Mila looks down at her hands and smiles widely.
