chapter ten
Third Person's POV
The sun had risen and Letty and also apparently Mia was at the police station. They had been asking the two women questions about Dom all night. They refused to answer the questions. They simply sat in their rooms silently with their arms folded over their chest. Michael Stasiak spoke, but Mia tuned him out. He pointed off into the distance. The man had received a call saying he was needed elsewhere so he left the room, leaving Mia with the other agent in the room. She looked down at her feet. There was a buzzing sound, which meant that someone was coming into the room. Mia looked up out of curiosity. Her breath caught in her throat the sight. There stood both Brian and Britney.
"Hey, Tyler, we got a transfer." Britney says to the man standing near Mia, she said that with a straight face. The man nodded his head as Brian walks over to Mia. She looked at him, swallowing hard.
"You want to come with us?" Brian asks quietly as Mia felt her blood pressure rise. Mia stood up and Brian and Britney both led the way. Britney was typing something on her tablet as they were walking to a small coffee shop about a block away from the police station.
Brian ordered a coffee, Britney got a Dr. Pepper, and Mia got a water. They had been sitting here in silence since they arrived which was a good thing for Britney as she was doing her own thing as she sat squished next to her Dad. No matter how much he tried to move there wasn't enough room for the two of them.
Mia had taken the time to notice how much Brian and Britney had changed. Brian's curls were gone, he didn't have that 'surfer boy' look anymore. He was dressed in a suit and a tie - something she had never seen him in prior to Desi's funeral. The hint of stubble on his face suited him well. He looked so handsome. She hated herself for admitting that.
Britney she already knew that she had changed but since the last time that Mia had seen the girl before the funeral, Britney's hair was shorter, and almost a brunette as she had a blonde/brunette hair. Her hair goes past her shoulders. Mia saw that Britney was wearing a burgundy suit suited for women. She looked completely different, as it scared her a whole lot about it. Definitely Britney is obviously older than five years ago. She also saw that on Britney's suit was Madden. Not O'Conner like her father.
"We've been here for ten minutes now. Are you gonna tell me why you dragged me here?" Mia spoke, breaking the silence as Britney just rolled her blue eyes hearing what she said. Brian leaned back in his seat.
"You know they're gonna capture Dom, maybe even worse. I don't want you gettin' tangled up in this, so stay away from him, Mia for everyone's sake...for mine. I really don't want to arrest you if you don't listen." Britney says without looking up from her tablet, as Mia scrunched her eyebrows at hearing the words that Britney just said to her.
"That's what you have to say to me after all this time? You're going to sit there and tell me to stay away from my brother, Britney?" Mia asked she was frustrated at this, also questioning Brian's parenting choices by having his child in the fucking FBI. "What makes you care about what happens to me all the sudden? Why now? What changed?" A hurt expression washes over Brian's face as for once Britney looks up from her tablet.
He turned his head to look out the window as Britney grabbed his hand and squeezed it and he returned it to her, then they both turned their attention back to Mia. Her words stung, but they knew they deserved it. He look a deep breath.
"What Dad did to you was wrong, because believe me. I've seen the shit he's done. We're sorry. It was the hardest thing for Dad to do, if it wasn't for me, he probably wouldn't be sacrificing his fucking life. So I don't want to hear your shit, Mia." Britney says as she was now fumed at hearing this entire conversation. She still had her emotionless expression on her face, that sorta scared Mia but she wasn't going to be saying anything.
"I'm sorry too, Brian. I'm so sorry that it was hard for you to come into my home and completely rip my family apart. I'm sorry that it was hard for you to come into my life, use me and get close to my brother and pretend to love me. I'm sorry it was hard for you to tell me that you wanted me in your life, and then just run away the next day. I'm so very sorry that it was hard for you." Mia spat, feeling a mixture of sadness and anger raging inside of her. She clenched her fists as the tears threatened to spill from her eyes. Brian swallowed hard, it was someone was twisting a knife into his chest. After seeing the expression on his face, Mia felt a little guilty for saying all those things. But she most definitely wasn't going to apologize for it.
"I lied to you. I lied to Dom, I lied to everybody. It's what I do best, it's why the Feds recruited me." Brian says as a doleful look on his face.
"Maybe you're just lying to yourself, Brian. Maybe you're not the good guy pretending to be the bad guy...maybe you're the bad guy pretending to be the good guy. You ever think of that?" Mia asks, narrowing her eyes slightly. Her heart pounded against her chest. She needed to leave before she started crying in front of him.
"Every day." Brian answered, his eyes meeting Mia's. She stared at him a moment before shaking her head. She stood up and began to walk away.
"Yeah, walk away." Britney muttered to Mia, before she turned around and walked back to the table where the two O'Conner's were still sitting. "Oh, look...you're back. Thought you were leaving."
"Britney." Brian says to his daughter as she rolled her eyes at her father. She was always like this, but he got used to it. Now wasn't the time for the two, to cause a scene here.
"You know, I always wondered....Why'd you let my brother go that day? What made you do it?" Mia asks, nervously fiddling with her jacket. As Brian looked up at Mia.
"I don't know." Brian replied quietly after a brief of silence. Mia nodded her head and then turned around and left, doing her best to process what had just happened.
Brian stayed there a moment, watching her walk away. He wanted to chase after her. That's what he should've done all those years ago. He should've stayed here and tried to work things out with her instead of running away.
"Well that happened?" Britney says as Brian side-eyed his daughter before running a hand over his face. He pulled his wallet out of his pocket and put down a $10 to pay for the bill. He stood up along with Britney and they both walked out of the coffee shop. Once they had arrived back at the station, Trinity, their co-worker spotted the teenage girl.
"Brian and Britney!" Trinity yelled. They both looked up when they heard their names. She ran towards them. They were in the process of trying to take down an infamous drug lord that went by the name Braga. There are no pictures, videos or any sort of documentation about this guy which just makes their job so much harder.
Brian had an encounter with a street thug and found out the name of the guy that could lead them to Braga. His name was David Park. The name David Park was a pretty popular name in this part of town, so they were having a tough time narrowing the search down.
"I've got the cross checks on David Park back and got a list of possibilities." Trinity spoke, as she opened the file, showing the two O'Conner's the items that was inside.
"Alright, what do you got?" Brian asks, looking down the files.
"A forty-five year old male with a scion and three reckless driving tickets." Trinity says, reading from the file. When Brian shook his head, she continued. But as per usual Britney listed off the cars.
"A two-thousand and one Chevy Tahoe." Britney says as Brian shakes his head yet again. They continue to walk through the isle of desks.
"Two mini-coopers, a six and a seven. A Toyota Hybrid." Trinity reads off from the list, as Britney almost laughs.
"A ninety-eight Nissan two fourty with an illegal mod--wait, that's what Dad drives." Britney says as Brian felt a rush of excitement wash over him. Britney looked at her Dad and just saw a smile on his face. This meant one thing, they found their guy.
"Wait, how do you know it's that one?" Trinity asks him, as matching smirks played at both Brian and Britney's lips.
"Because that's something I'd drive." Brian says, quickly Britney wrote down the address for this man and she hurried to her Skyline where her father barely missed her driving off almost leaving him in the dust.
When the two pulled up to the location, he spotted the Nissan and smiled. This was a good sign, they unbuckled their seat belts and exited the cars. They walked closer to the Nissan and began to inspect it.
The sound of glass shattering put Brian and Britney on high alert. They looked up at the building next to them and find Dom holding someone halfway out of the window. Brian and Britney both run into the building. As they climbed the stairs, they both grabbed their guns from their waist band in case they needed to use it. Britney heard someone screaming for help and she assumed it was the man dangling out of the window. Britney motioned her father to follow her and he followed her. They spotted a door that had been busted open, they both took a deep breath before walking inside with their guns aimed.
"Bring him up, Dominic." Britney commanded slowly moving closer to Dom. He was the last person that either her father and her had expected to see here. Dom cocked his head to the side upon hearing that voice. He knew who it was, and also who was with Britney. "Bring him up, not going to ask again." Britney commanded again.
"You here to take me in, O'Conner?" Dom asked the girl. It felt weird for the three of them to be in each other's presence again.
"Oh shit!" The man, David Park who was hanging from the window cried out. Dom gripped his leg tighter.
"SHUT UP!" Dom yelled. He didn't feel threatened by Brian and or Britney as he knew that they wouldn't use it.
"Desiree was my friend, too." Britney says taking a couple more steps towards Dom with her gun aimed directly at his head as she cocked the gun.
"You gonna shoot me, Mini O'Conner?" Dom asks Britney as she almost felt herself stop right then and there. That was the first time that she has ever heard that nickname since her and Dom were at that barbecue.
"If I have to I will, now bring Park over, now!!" Britney commanded louder as Dom still didn't think that Britney would use that gun.
"YO, CAN YOU GUYS TALK ABOUT THIS LATER AND PULL MY ASS UP?!" David Park screamed, feeling his heart race speed up.
"She was runnin' for this guy Braga and things went bad. I'm gonna get these guys, Dom. Now let us do our job and bring him up." Brian instructed, his heart pounding against his chest.
"I'm gonna kill this Braga....and anyone else who gets in my way." Dom says darkly as Britney lowered her gun and Brian sighed thinking that she wasn't going to shoot him, but it just went lower to his leg. Then a gunshot could be heard, as Dom threw David Park back into the room from the window and limped away.
Brian breathed a sigh of relief when he ran over past Britney and saw that David was okay. As Brian helped him up, he glanced back into the room to where Dom had went. He was gone.
Britney arrested David Park. He was bringing him back to the station for questioning. It had been a very eventful day for Britney and Brian and it was only 3:00 pm. They had arrived at the station, Brian and Britney walked out of the elevator with David - who was in handcuffs - by this side.
"O'Conner and Madden!" Michael Stasiak called out when he saw the two exit the elevator. They knew their co-worker was going to complain about Brian interfering with his interrogation of Mia and Letty. "If you ever release my witness again--" Michael stopped talking and shoved Britney.
Britney grabbed a hold of Michael and slammed his face into the wall behind them, breaking his nose. Britney kneed him in the gut, causing Michael to fall to the floor. Britney took a few steps back, looking down at him.
"That's enough, Madden!" Penning, both Brian and Britney's boss, shouted as he reached the two. A small crowed gathered. Penning frowned when he saw the blood on Michael's face
"Don't touch me, I'm fine." Michael said as two men tried to help him stand. He pointed at Britney who just waved with a smirk on her face when he was back on his feet. "You're through, Madden!"
"Oh, really, buster." Britney said wanting to go back for a round two but Brian harshly grabbed the collar of her suit, and pulling her back stopping her in her tracks.
"I said, that's enough!" Penning said, his tone stern. "Stasiak go get yourself cleaned up."
"What? She hit me first." Michael exclaimed as a rush of anger washed over him.
"It was very enjoyable." Britney said as Brian pulled her back as he still had his hand digging into her collar.
"This isn't the cub scouts! Now go on! You're bleeding on my floor." Penning demanded raising his voice at the shorter man. Michael walked away as he glared at Britney who had a mischievous smirk on her face. Penning took a few steps closer to Britney. "Madden, do you know the difference between a cop and a criminal?"
"What?" Both Brian and Britney as in unison as Britney catches her breath.
"One bad judgment call. Keep your shit in line, Madden." Penning replied as his words made Brian think about what Mia had said in the coffee shop.
He couldn't help but start to think that she just might be right.
