24. Drawing Of A Key

3rd Person's POV

Catalina paces the deck anxiously as she looks at the rocks by the prison. Coffins lay on the rocks and far away screams echo from the building. A tear slides down her face as she thinks the worst.

It had been two weeks since Jack went inside the prison. Everyone had warned him not to go inside but no; there was something in there that was so important that he needed to.

"Fifteen men on a dead man's chest, yo-ho and a bottle of rum." Gibbs stumbles out the first mate cabin holding a bottle of rum.

He looks up and sees Cat pacing and frowns, "By god Cat what ye be doing up out here so late?"

Cat jumps and turns to Gibbs with a guilty smile, "I can't sleep. I'm scared. He's been in there a long time. What if-"

Gibbs shakes his head as he walks over to her. The two walk to the rail and lean against it watching the waves.

"Oh lassie he be Captain Jack Sparrow. He can get out of anything."

"Why didn't he let me go? I could've helped and he would've been back faster."

Gibbs looks over at her with a frown, "It's too dangerous he said. Cap doesn't want you hurt or worse. Don't worry he be back by sunrise."

He pats her shoulder then walks up the stairs to the wheel. As time passes by, more and more of the crew step up from below deck and get to work. Cat remains leaning against the rail, watching the strong waves hit the rocks by shore.

The prison guards come out carrying more coffins and throw them into the water. Cat watches as a black bird sits on top of one, hitting it with its beak over and over. Suddenly, a loud shot bangs from the coffin hitting the bird making it fall into the water. The crew all run to the rail and watch as a skeleton leg pops out the top of the box. A body sits up and starts to use the leg as an oar, rowing to the ship. Cat smiles as she sees witty Jack get closer and closer.

The small coffin hits the ship and Jack starts make his way up. As his hand hits the rail, Gibbs holds his hand out to help but instead gets the skeleton leg. Cat stands back behind everyone as Jack makes his way on deck. Everyone glares as he starts to make his way to the back of the crew. He sees Cat and relief washes over his face as he holds his arms out.

Cat smiles widely and runs into his arms. He holds her head and kisses her gently as she wraps her arms tightly around his waist.

"Don't do that again. I'm getting really tired of you leaving me."

"Never again."

Cat smiles as she holds Jack's hand.

Gibbs walks over to the two with a grimace, "Not quite according to plan."

Jack shrugs pulling Cat into his side, "Complications arose, ensued, were overcome."

"You got what you went in after, then?" Cat questions with a smile.

Jack waggles a folded strip of cloth victoriously, but moves away quickly pulling Cat with him. Gibbs peers at the cloth, hurries after Jack.

Gibbs wrings his hands together, "Captain, I think the crew- meaning me as well- were expecting something a bit more ... shiny."

Jack almost walks into Leech, who stands in his path, arms folded. The rest of the crew drift over, surrounding Jack, not threatening, but not friendly, either.

Gibbs continues as he stands by with the crew, "With Isla de Muerta going all pear-shaped, reclaimed by the sea, and the treasure with it-"

"And the Royal Navy chasing us all around the Atlantic." Leech frowns.

"And the hurricane!" Marty adds.

Catalina frowns as she looks at the crew. No one had said a word of this when he was gone. Did they feel this way the whole time? No one had even mentioned they were unhappy to her. Especially not Gibbs. She felt a little betrayed. How was she the only one who actually cared for Jack not just money?

Gibbs holds his hand up silencing the crew, "All in all, it's been some time since we've done a spec of honest piratin'."

"Shiny." Jack repeats with a slight look of betrayal on his face also.

"Aye. Shiny." Gibbs nods.

Catalina growls as she steps in front of Jack.

"Jack has been gone for weeks and all you bloody pirates have been thinking about is something bloody shiny?! Well then..."

She turns to Jack and nudges him, "Smile Jack."

Jack furrows his eyebrows in confusion. Cat nods and he shrugs smiling, showing off his shining silver and gold teeth.

Cat turns around and also smiles pointing at Jack, "There's your shiny."

The crew all frown as Cat grabs Jack's hand. Gibbs opens his mouth to say something else but closes it as he sees Catalina give him a deadly glare.

Jack frowns as he looks over every face, "Is that how you're all feeling? That I'm not serving your interests as Captain?"

An awkward silence.

"Walk the plank!"

Jack's quickly pulls his pistol out, and aims it at Cotton's Parrot. Cotton's eyes widen as he covers the bird mouth with one finger.

"What did the bird say?" Jack asks with crazy eyes.

Cat shakes her head and lightly pushes Jack's hand down. She turns to the bird and glares heatedly as Cotton tries to shield the parrot away.

"Oh shut it you. Before I let him make bird stew..."

Leech steps up, "Do not blame the bird. Just show us
what's on that piece of cloth you got there."

Jack sneaks a peek at what's on the cloth and considers his response.

Jack the monkey, skeletal in the moonlight, swings out of the rigging and screeches at Pirate Jack. Pirate Jack screams back as the monkey grabs the cloth and runs. Jack fires his pistol at it -- CLICK -- then tosses it aside as he pulls a pistol from Leech's belt, and fires again.

The monkey is blown back as it drops the cloth. It looks down then back up. No effect. It chatters scoldingly as it runs away.

Gibbs frowns, "You know that doesn't do any good."

"It does me."

Marty grabs the cloth before it blows away. The crew examines it. Marty turns it, revealing that it is a rough drawing.

"It's a key." Marty frowns.

"Better." Jack takes the cloth, displays it, "It's a drawing of a key."

Jack waits. The crew is not as impressed as Jack seems to expect. Jack can't believe they aren't more excited. Cat frowns herself wondering why he would risk his life for a drawing.

"Gentlemen, what do keys do?"

Everyone stands in silence with their hands on their chins trying to figure it out as if Jack had said a riddle.

"Are you kidding me right now? A key unlocks things. Ugh bloody pirates." Cat sighs as she sits on the railing.

Gibbs smiles and nods, "And whatever this unlocks, inside is something valuable! So we're setting out to find whatever this unlocks."

Jack frowns and shakes his head, looking at Gibbs as if he is crazy, "No. If we don't have the key, we can't open whatever it unlocks, so what purpose would be served in finding whatever needs be unlocked without first having found the key that unlocks it? Honestly, you ninny."

"So we're going to find this key?" Gibbs questions as the crew nods.

"What good is a key if we have nothing for the key to unlock? Please, try and keep up!" Jack grabs Cat's hand and pulls her down off the rail, slowly leading her to his quarters.

The crew considers this... then shrug, nod, sure, that makes sense. They go with it.

Marty raises his hand, "So-- do we have a heading?"

"Aye! A heading!"

Jack turns away, flips open his compass and studies it. He then shakes it and angles it. Then shoots an arm out to the girl standing beside him. Cat looks at the compass smirking as Jack closes it.

"Set sail in a general... that way direction."

He points behind Catalina as if he wasn't pointing at her first, making the crew look at each other in question.

"Captain?" Gibbs frowns.

"I'll plot our course later."

They all hesitate but quickly nod as Cat puts her hand on her sword.

"Snap to and make sail! You know how it works!" She orders as Jack strides toward his cabin with Cat in tow. The crew turns to their tasks, but not happily.

"Have you noticed lately, the Captain seems to be acting a bit-- strange? Er?" Marty questions looking at the empty spot where Jack just was.

"Aye. Something's got Jack vexed, setting a course without knowing his own heading. Trust me... what bodes ill for Jack Sparrow bodes ill for us all. I shall talk to Cat and get her to find out."

Marty nods and heads off.
