14. Attempted Murder
3rd Person's POV
Catalina was the first one to wake up early the next morning. After helping out a little bit on deck, she decided to go up to the birds nest on the top of the ship. She remembered how her father used to sit with her and watch the sunrise outside on their back porch. They were so beautiful. They made you forget all about your problems and troubles in life.
Seeing the sunrise so close and so bright, she felt as though her father was telling her that he was looking out for her. She missed him dearly but she knew he was watching her. Of course she thought he would be slightly disappointed in her growing up to be a killer pirate instead of a nurse but she knew he would be proud of the strong independent woman she turned into.
As everyone starts to wake up, Catalina decides to go down on deck and help Will. She wanted to study him a bit more. After the kiss she knew that she didn't want to steer his mind from his mission of rescuing his beloved... but it had been a while since she had actual legit sexual relations with a man. As much as she was attracted to him... laying with Jack last night had made a few old feelings come to mind.
Will works on deck, coiling a rope-- but he watches Jack and AnaMaria, clearly not happy. Gibbs hobbles up.
"Left-handed ropes are coiled against the sun, or it's bad luck," he twirls a finger, "Anty-clockwise."
Gibbs takes over the task. The ship shifts course again. Will had just enough.
"How do we expect to find an island no one can find-- with a compass that doesn't work?" Will throws up his hands in despair just as Catalina walks over.
She has a questionable look on her face but says nothing. Sitting on a box nearby, she sees Will looking at her so she waves. He waves back then walks closer to her.
Gibbs follows with a frown, "Now, lad, just because it don't point north don't mean it don't work."
Gibbs voice gets lower as he leans in closer to the two, "That compass gives bearings to the Isla de Muerta, wherever it may lay."
"Really? So... what's the story on the pistol?"
Gibbs settles in, happy to have a willing listener.
"I'll tell ye. Now, Jack Sparrow has an honest streak in him,"
Will glances over at Catalina who scoffs and looks away. Anger is in her eyes but her face is calm. Will scrunches his eyebrows wondering what happened between the two.
Gibbs frowns a little as he looks at Catalina but continues, "and that's where the whole problem starts. This was when he was Captain of the Black Pearlβ"
"What? He never told me that."
"Ah-- he's learned, then. Plays things more close to the vest. See, Jack was a cartographer, back in Old England. Somehow he came by the money to commission the Pearl. Hired himself a crew, promised each man an equal share."
Gibbs now stands in front of the two whispering, "So, they're forty days out, and the First Mate says, everything's an equal share, that should mean the location of the island, too. So Jack gave up the bearings."
Catalina glances up from looking at the sea to find her eyes meeting Jack's. She was very thankful that things had gone back to normal after last night. She didn't want to just let him off the hook no matter if he helped or not.
Jack stares more intensely while looking at her body. If she hadn't had such a tough exterior she would've blushed. In return, she does the same to him. She doesn't even try to hide the fact that her eyes roam his entire body. Connecting her eyes back to his, she notices him biting his light slightly. Feeling tingles in her stomach she decides it's probably best to look away.
Gibbs has still been talking about what happened between Jack and his ex first mate when Catalina came back to.
He shakes his head, "That night, there was a mutiny. Jack gave hisself up for the sake of his loyal crew. He was marooned on an island, left there to die."
"Wait-- what about the pistol?" Will glances over at Jack who had been looking at his compass.
Gibbs frowns, "The pistol. When a pirate is marooned, Will, he's given a pistol with a single shot. No good for hunting, or surviving, really. But after three weeks of starvation and thirst-- the option of that pistol begins to look good."
He makes a gun with his fingers and holds it up to his chin. Catalina frowns deeply as she listens to the story. She had never heard anything about Jack being marooned. And she definitely didn't know he almost died.
"But Jack he escaped the island. And he still has that single shot. Oh he won't use it though. Savin' it for one man. His mutinous first mate."
Will looks over at Cat then back at Gibbs, "Barbossa."
Gibbs nods, "Barbossa Aye."
"How did Jack get off the island?"
"Well I'll tell lee. He waited out into the shallows and he waited there three days and three nights, till all manner of sea creatures came. Now on the fourth morning, he roped himself a couple of sea turtles, latched then together, and made a raft."
Will glances at Catalina who lets out a small giggle.
She holds up a hand, "I'm sorry... did ye say he roped a couple of sea turtles?"
Gibbs nods with wide eyes, "Aye sea turtles."
"What did he use for rope?"
Gibbs opens his mouth to answer Will but then realizes that he doesn't even know himself. He looks confused for a second but then a voice is heard behind them. Will and Gibbs jump while Catalina smirks and turns around. Jack is right there behind them.
"Human hair from me own back."
"Ew."
Catalina jumps down from the box then walks away to talk to AnaMaria. Jack watches as she leaves. Will shakes his head as Jack's eyes wander lower then necessary.
"Gibbs lower the anchor. Turner, Cat, and I will go ashore."
Gibbs nods then walks away to tell the crew. As Jack turns to leave, Will grabs his arm and pulls him back.
"Jack what is going on between you and Cat?"
Jack's eyes widen, "Nothing."
"It doesn't seem like just nothing Jack. There is something wrong. I can tell."
"Alright Turner we used to be be friends. We actually grew up together. But things happened, I became a pirate, she had goals in life I didn't need to drag her with me. But now it seems as if she has become a pirate and a killer all by herself."
Will looks at Jack's face as Jack stares at Cat from across the boat. Will can't even believe it but he sees love in Jack's eyes.
"You're actually telling the truth?"
Jack nods, "Of course I am. I tend to do that."
Will frowns, "Well why does she hate you?"
"Hate is a strong word, Turner-"
"She's tried to kill you two times already Jack."
"Well actually the fight was- wait... two?"
Will grimaces, "Oh uh she might have tried to strangle you in your sleep."
"What?" Jack frowns.
"What?" Will repeats as he looks away, "Oh look time to go."
Jack watches as Will runs away to Gibbs and the rest of the crew. He pulls out his compass and opens it. The needle twists and turns then finally lands on one particular spot. The person standing at the wheel of the ship.
The person who hated him and apparently tried to kill him. But for some reason that didn't matter. He wanted her. And after all this was over, he would let her know that.
