11. Love Hurts
3rd Person's POV
A flash of lightening and the crack of thunder fill throughout the sky. The canvas of every sail is stretched taut. The ship rocks as it drops into the valley of huge swell, climbs up the other side.
On board, the new crew members scurry about with their tasks, pulling lines and trimming sails. Excellent sailors, it takes everything they have to keep the ship afloat. AnaMaria is at the helm.
Gibbs staggers along the deck, "That fool will have us lose the canvas, and the masts besides!"
On Jack, a roaring wind blowing back his hair, eyes intent on their course. Gibbs climbs the tilted deck toward him.
"We'd best drop canvas, sir!"
Jack shakes his head, "She can hold a bit longer."
The wind picks up, howling. Jack smiles.
"What's in your head to put you in such a fine mood," Gibbs shouts.
"We're catching up!"
Jack turns back to the sea, enjoying himself. Gibbs stares at him like he's a crazy man. Gibbs turns away and goes back to the crew as Jack's eyes linger over the deck, looking for one person in particular.
Where is she?
"AnaMaria take the wheel."
AnaMaria steps up and grabs the wheel with a nod. Jack closes his compass then throws it in his pocket. Without another word, he makes his way down the stairs and into the hall to the captain's quarters. Standing by the door, he puts his ear to it and listens to the other side. He hears light footsteps and drawers closing and instantly knows that she was in there.
Slamming the door open, Jack stands with his arms crossed against his chest. Catalina glances over without worry or surprise then turns back to the desk she was scavenging through.
"What are ye doing?" Jack asks as he slowly makes his way into the room.
"What I do best Sparrow... study then kill." Catalina smirks as she raises a bottle of rum to her lips.
Jack's eyebrows furrow, "You're going to kill me?"
Jack was totally and utterly confused. The last he saw her they were the best of friends. Sure he would understand if she was mad about him not coming back but she was livid and not herself.
"Oh not yet. But when I do... I will be a legend."
"Right..." Jack says in confusion while watching Catalina slightly stumble past the desk.
"Catalina-"
Jack stops speaking as Cat pushes him into a desk, her body touching his, with a knife attached to his throat.
"You Sparrow... don't get to call me that. Not anymore. Do we have an understanding?"
Jack watches as her dead eyes become a little bit livelier, "Aye we have an understanding love."
Catalina scoffs and puts the knife away. Then looks at him once more before slapping him across the face. She laughs at his shocked face then moves away and sits on his bed.
"What was that for?" Jack raises his hands in the air crazily.
"Don't ever call me love, got it love?"
Jack watches as she brings a bottle up to her lips and drinks it. She then puts the bottle down and stands a good distance from Jack.
He looks her up and down and can't help but have thousands of questions. The first was why was she killing people. The second... who is she? This is not the Catalina he knew. Not even close.
"I had no idea that you would be the one known as Enchantress. I heard that she- well uh you... have killed over a dozen men. Why?"
Catalina smirks and holds her arms out, "Why not? No ones going to miss a few rapists and worthless English soldiers."
Jack shrugs as if saying true but then shakes his head. Looking at his old friend now he knew there was something else she wasn't telling him. He had no idea why she was so scary. She had changed.
"What happened to being a nurse? Wanting to save lives?"
Cat shrugs, "It's like you said Jackie... it gets boring."
Jack frowns not liking her answer. She would never say that. Something is wrong. He will figure out what but I guess she needs to warm up to him first.
"Why are you here? What could you possibly want on this endeavor?"
"Adventure... treasure... I don't know yet. But when I figure it out, I'll let you know."
Jack goes to open his mouth but is cut off by Cat.
"And no Sparrow I'm not here for you. I actually do plan on helping the handsome Turner fellow. Unlike some people." She crosses her arms with an eyebrow raised.
Damn it she still knows me well, Jack thinks to himself.
"You know nothing." Jack mimics her childishly.
"Oh please. You're Jack Sparrow... all you care about is yourself. Obviously there is something about him that means something to you. Otherwise you would have left as soon as he freed you from that Port Royal jail. Perhaps his name is something meaningful to you. William Turner sounds familiar... I hear things from people. So you tell me Jack Sparrow, are you using him?"
"I resent that. I am very helpful and giving."
Jack's heart skips a beat as Cat's blank face instantly turns into a seducing one. She smiles and cocks her head to the side as she bites her lip then she stands up and struts over to Jack.
She then lays her palms on his chest and leans close to him whispering, "Yes I've heard about how giving you are to wenches and mistresses. I would say it's disgusting but then I would be a hypocrite."
Jack doesn't know what to do. He was frozen still and his brain had completely stopped working. She was good.
She lightly kisses down his neck to his collarbone making him shiver in excitement, "Except the difference between you and me is that after I use them... I kill them."
And just like that Catalina removes herself from Jack and sits on his bed again, this time holding up a pair of keys. Jack looks at her in confusion then pats where his keys used to be.
"They don't call me Enchantress for nothing, Jackie. You don't mind me sleeping here right? I mean this isn't your boat. I've heard of the Black Pearl it looks nothing like this."
Jack shakes his head while clearing his throat, "No, no it's fine. I shall manage in the first mate chamber and Gibbs will be fine below with the crew. It's um a little rough out so um just stay in here."
Jack makes his way to the door then glances back one last time before shutting it. Catalina sighs and lays back with a huff.
After a minute of staring at the ceiling, someone knocks on the door. Catalina groans then gets up walking over to the door while also grabbing the run off the desk. The door opens to reveal a nervous Gibbs.
"Joshamee Gibbs... what can I do ya for?"
Turning around, Catalina walks back to the bed and stands near it. Gibbs gulps as he walks in. He had just tried talking to the captain who had been in a trance and was not very helpful with directions at the moment.
"Well I uh- I um just wanted to ask- I know it's not my place but Jack is acting strange- er and all of the crew and I were wondering if it had something to do with a specific new member. You per say."
Catalina chuckles as she points to the chair at the desk. Gibbs follows and sits down.
"Jack Sparrow... he didn't have that name growing up. You knew that?"
Gibbs shakes his head, "He has told me of a few things in his younger days but not everything."
"His name was Jack Teague. We used to be best friends. We grew up together. He told me he loved me and I him. After that he disappeared and I never saw him again for months. I was in Tortuga and saw him with his hand in some wench's skirt."
Gibbs looks at Catalina sadly, "I'm sorry that happened Cat."
"You don't tell someone you love them... and then leave them. That could really damage someone."
Catalina laughs humorlessly, "I would know. Look at me..."
Gibbs watches as she turns around in a circle raising her hands above her head slightly spilling some rum everywhere.
"I'm a mess... a killer... a bloody pirate. All because of love. Funny isn't it? The thing that everyone craves so dearly is the one thing that hurts them the most. Not people, not swords, not guns, just stupid love."
Gibbs nods with a sad smile, "Aye. Tis true. Jack... he did tell me of this girl in his younger days. He always said how beautiful and smart she was. How badly she wanted to be a nurse. He never told me anything else after that. Never a name or what she meant to him... was that you?"
Cat sighs and sits on the bed looking down at the ground. A tear slides down her cheek and falls onto the wood floor.
"Aye... my father wanted me to be a nurse. Always did..."
Cat laughs humorlessly as Gibbs frowns, "Obviously that didn't work out."
Gibbs opens his mouth to speak but hears Jack calling his name from the deck. He gives Cat a look as if apologizing then walks over to the door.
"Things will work out. They always do Cat. Believe me."
He leaves without another glance and closes the door behind him. Cat wipes her face and sits the bottle of rum down on the floor. Falling back on the bed she stares at the ceiling thinking about the next upcoming days. It was only day one and seeing Jack had made her a mess. This is going to be a rough week.
