Chapter 9: Sadness

Y/N was currently in his apartment, as usual, with his sister standing right next to him.

Y/N had a deadpan look on his face as Setsuna has a smile on her face. The reason why is Saki had decided to visit and she was now rolling around on the floor.

Y/N: Why?

Saki: Summer is almost over. I want more months.

Setsuna: So do I, but because of Itsuki's work and my own, we couldn't even go anywhere aside from the Chiba trip. (pouts) I really wanted to go to the beach and hit on other girls.

Y/N: (deadpan) Stupid.

A visible tick mark appears on Setsuna's head and she immediately grabs her younger brother, putting him in a headlock and drives her fist into his head.

Setsuna: Who are you calling stupid!? Huh!?

Y/N: Ow ow ow ow ow! Get off me you old hag!

Setsuna: (tightens grip) You called me an old hag again!

Kawasaki only watches her cousin, giggling at Y/N's misfortune. As the scuffle continues, the door opens, Itsuki walking in, coming home for lunch.

Itsuki: I'm ho--

He pauses as he gains a horrified look as he stares at his two siblings, with Y/N being on the floor and Setsuna's arm being wrapped around his neck. In her free hand was some rope and Saki had a look of disbelief. Honestly, she doesn't remember Setsuna being this way.

Y/N notices his older brother in the room and reaches his hand out to him and pleas for help.

Itsuki: Hai, hai, hai. I never saw anything. I never saw anything. Saki, I got some errands to run. Want to come?

Saki: Yes please.

Getting up and grabbing her stuff, she leaves with Itsuki. Before the door closes, Y/N yells out.

Y/N: You son of a bi--

The door closes shut and the two walk away like nothing happened.

Saki: He's going to kill you later.

Itsuki: I know. He can considered that payback for not stopping Setsuna in Chiba.

Saki: You have no backbone whatsoever.

Suddenly, they hear a loud bang as they turned around to see the L/N sibling's apartment door wide open. Y/N could be seen crawling out of the door, dodging an enraged Setsuna, who had a rope and duct tape in her hands. Soon, Y/N starts to dart down the hall as does Itsuki and Saki, running away from a very angry Setsuna.

The L/N brothers made the note. "Never enrage Setsuna ever again." Although, keeping this mental note to remember is something that'll be hard to actually do.

Le Timeskip

After that whole debacle with Setsuna, Saki had already went home, leaving the L/N children in their apartment.

As usual, Setsuna was the one doing the chores, Itsuki was working on an engineering project for his company, brainstorming ideas, and Y/N was on his phone, scrolling through Reddit. For some reason, memes seem to make his day. Most of the time.

Setsuna: Oh! I nearly forgot!

Y/N: (sigh) What now?

Itsuki: Well, aren't you chipper.

Setsuna: The town is holding fireworks tonight! We should go see it as a family!

Itsuki: Hmm, I might be able to leave work early. If I remember correctly, the boss said he was going to close early because of this.

Y/N: I already know that you're going to drag me there, so I might as well come.

Setsuna: Perfect! Now I just have to get me a yukata! Y/N--

Y/N: Absolutely not.

Setsuna: But it's the summer!

Y/N: I don't like those.

Itsuki: Besides, give it a rest.

Setsuna: (pouts) Hmph. Fine.

Itsuki: Well, I'm heading in to the office. I'll see you guys tonight.

Setsuna: Might as well shop for some yukatas then. Y/N, if your going out, remember to lock the door.

Y/N: Hai, hai.

Setsuna: Alright then. See you later!~

Itsuki: What she said.

The two older siblings leave, leaving the youngest L/N by himself. After awhile, he had nothing to do. He didn't want to sit around in the apartment, lazing about. Not only that, there weren't any good anime coming out at the moment.

(A/N): Like, seriously, all the good anime have ended. I have to wait for the Demon Slayer movie to come out on MyAnimeList. It's not even on there yet. Kill me.

Sunset soon came around and Setsuna had soon come home, getting ready for the fireworks. It was a beautiful yukata she was wearing. The colors of black and blue with a white obi on it. Y/N dressed up in his normal attire, what he usually wears for most days. Black gym shorts with his usual hoodie.

Since it was still early for the fireworks to occur, the two had decided to walk around the area, looking at all the food stalls.

As they walked around, Setsuna was eating some takoyaki and Y/N with a bag of cotten candy.

Setsuna: Mmmm!~ Oishi!

Y/N: Nee-san, don't buy too much.

Setsuna: You're one to talk. You're sweet tooth is kicking in.

Y/N: This is only one bag. At least I didn't spend a whole lot on takoyaki.

Setsuna: (not listening) Hmm, what should we eat next? Candy apples?

Y/N: (sigh) Great. She's not even listening.

As they kept watching, Y/N bumped into someone. Someone he wasn't expecting to be here.

Y/N: Hey! Watch where you're--oh, it's you.

Hachiman: Did you have to be like that?

Y/N: Well, you're not really the type of person to come out here.

Hachiman: ...Fair point. Then again, my sister planned all this for being nosy and I ended up accepting Yuigahama's invitation to go here. Why are you here?

Y/N: Who do you think?

Hachiman: Oh. Ooooohhhh. That's tough.

Y/N: Well, there's really no point in arguing with her with these type of things.

Setsuna: Oh, Hikigaya-kun! Nice to see you here.

Hachiman: (nods) Osu.

Setsuna: Who did you come here with?

Hachiman: Yuigahama.

Looking over to where Hikigaya was pointing, they see Yuigahama dressed in a yukata as well, the color being yellow with a orange square pattern to it. She was talking to a girl in their class, Sagami. Sagami had also two other girls with her, but Y/N and Hachiman weren't paying attention, trying to fade in the background. Setsuna was on a call, talking to Itsuki on where to meet for the fireworks.

Sagami: So, you here with anyone?

Yui: Oh, yeah. This is Hikigaya-kun. He's in our class. Wait, L/N-san!?

Hachiman: (nervously) Osu.

Y/N: Yo.

Yui: A-Anyway, this is Sagami Minami-chan. She's in our class.

They gave Hachiman questioning looks, but rather flirty ones towards Y/N, who in turn only rolls his eyes.

Setsuna: Yui-chan! Yahello!

Y/N: When did you start using that greeting?

Yui: Oh, Setsuna-san. Yahello!

Sagami: (smug) Oh? You came here together? It's a fireworks show with just girls for us! Wish I could live up my youth like you!

Yui: (sweat drops) Hey, you're talking about it like it's a swim meet!

Y/N: So? What did Nii-san say?

Setsuna: He should be here just about--

Itsuki: Sorry I'm late.

Setsuna: No worries!

Y/N: Meh.

Itsuki: Now then, Setsuna, no splur--

Y/N: Nii-san, it's already too late on that.

Itsuki: (flattens out in a comically manner) Why am I not surprised?

Setsuna: Are you calling me fat!?

Itsuki: Dear sister of mine, I would never say such things. All I'm saying is--

Setsuna: (death glare) Do you want to be tied up at home?

Itsuki: N-No ma'am.

Setsuna: That's what I thought. Come along now.

Y/N: See you later, I guess.

Hachiman: Sure.

The L/N siblings leave Hachiman and Yui to their business, walking around the stalls, gazing about the food.

While Setsuna was on a food rush, Y/N and Itsuki were left to take care of a hungry Setsuna. After walking around for awhile, they made it to the designated area on where the fireworks were being held. They were able to secure a spot, a private one.

While the three stared at the fireworks, Y/N started to remember a vivid memory.

Flashback

(A/N): Setsuna and Haruno are eight while Itsuki is about 14. Meaning, you and Yukino are about five.

Y/N and his siblings, along with their mother were at the Yukinoshita home. The only ones there were Haruno, Yukino, and their own mother.

The mothers were talking amongst themselves in the living room, Itsuki being in the same room, reading a book on engineering basics. Setsuna and Haruno were in Haruno's room, doing something.

Y/N and Yukino however, were on the balcony, sitting on chairs as the two gazed out into the starry night sky. Fireworks were even lighting up the night.

The young Y/N looked towards Yukino, a bright smile on her face as he stared into her eyes. He could see the reflection of the fireworks exploding in her eyes. It made her look cute, pretty even. Y/N blushed as he stared at her. Soon enough, Yukino caught him looking at her, causing her to blush as well.

The two looked away, flustered, as the sounds of fireworks exploding could be heard in the background. Something was placed on Y/N's shoulder, causing the green-eyed boy to look in the direction. Yukino was laying her head on his shoulder, comfortably sound asleep. Y/N couldn't help but make a small smile and soon, he too could feel himself drifting off to sleep. Unknown to the two, Yukinoshita's mother and the L/N's mother were watching them, a smile on both their faces.

Flashback End

Itsuki could see that Y/N was deep in thought. The look in his eyes meant that he was reminiscing something.

Then again, he too remembered when he asked Shizuka to go with him to watch the fireworks as well. As friends. They were both sixteen at the time and they knew nothing about love. Not only that, Itsuki was dense when it came to women, something that surprised his own mother. A single comment from Itsuki to a girl was enough to make the girl on the receiving end blush. This would only add confusion to him, but then again, he was never the best at understanding a woman's heart as he thought it was a "waste of time," rather focusing on school work.

Now twenty-six, he was at the age of having a spouse, but never found one. He had tried going on dates, but he could never find the one. If only he knew that the person meant for him was with him most of the time.

Not long after, the fireworks end and the L/N children head home for the day, tired. There were only a few days left of summer before heading back to school so the three siblings decided to make the most of it and spend time with each other, making up for the times they couldn't do that when they were younger.

After all, tomorrow was someone's anniversary. And it wasn't a pleasant one.

Next Day

It was the next day and Itsuki and Setsuna were the first to get up. Both of them were dressed up in formal attire. Setsuna wearing a black dress and Itsuki wearing a tuxedo, they were waiting on their younger brother.

Setsuna: Do you think he's ready?

Itsuki: We didn't see her for a few years now. Hopefully he can.

Setsuna: If he can. And you mean he hasn't seen her in a few years. We have.

Itsuki: You know what I meant.

Setsuna: (sigh) I know, I know. I'm just worried, you know?

Itsuki: I know. But, we'll get through this together.

Setsuna: Right.

With Y/N

Y/N currently sat on his bed, looking down as his hair covers his eyes. Still dressed in his night wear, his formal clothing sat on top of his desk.

He was hesitant to get up. The main reason being that today was his mother's death. The day she had died all those years back protecting her son. The day Y/N's life essentially came crashing down. Though it wasn't his fault. That's what he didn't want to believe though. Getting up from his bed, he grabs his towel and heads to the shower.

He stood there in the shower. His eyes dull, dead of life. Most of his happiness did come from his mother after all. He didn't even remember a time that his mother was mean. Whenever he did something wrong, he would only receive a light scolding from her, but a mother's hug right after. He already missed the feeling of a mother's hug, and her love. Y/N wasn't sure if he was ready to see her grave again. He didn't go in the past three years as it brought him too much emotional pain. But this was something he had to do.

Getting out of the shower and heading back to his room, he looked at the clothes that sat on the left side of his desk. He clenched his fists and he grabbed them. The scene changes to Y/N in front of a mirror. He had finished putting on his clothes and fixed his hair they way it usually is. Now, the green-eyed boy was just fixing and fumbling with his tie. He knew he was taking a long time to fix himself up, but it was understandable to his siblings.

With a sigh, he left his room heading to the door, putting on his shoes. His hand heading for the door knob. His hand started to shake. He grabs it with his other and waits to calm down. With that done with, he opens the door.

Itsuki: Ready to go?

Y/N: (nods and hums)

Itsuki: Alright then. Let's go.

Setsuna: Wait one second.

Of course, Y/N would mess up on his tie. Setsuna had taken the extra minute to fix it up. As she did so, she looked up to see that Y/N's eyes were focused on the ground the entire time, dull of life.

After finishing with his tie, she hugs him, rubbing his back in the process as their oldest sibling joins in as well.

Setsuna: It wasn't your fault. You know that. So just let it out.

Only sniffles could be heard. After a few minutes, the three siblings got into the car, heading towards the cemetery. Walking past various graves, they see a particular one. A large one in fact.

It was decorated with lots of flowers and ribbons. This was the grave of Sarashiki L/N. She was remembered as a kind person and helpful one, always donating to helpful organizations, doing fundraisers, and most importantly, loved volunteering that involved helping children. She was loved by many, revered as the "Queen of the people."

The three siblings didn't stay there long though. It was a short visit, but a nice one. They shared the sadness of their mother, the three of them working hard to keep her image, or rather Setsuna is. Itsuki was always caught up in his own work and Y/N most of the time depressed, trying to forget that day. But the three try their best to help out. In fact, every Christmas, they would help out a children's hospital or donate money like their mother. While they don't donate large enough as much as their mother, due to them refusing money from their own father, they try to help just as much.

Most people see Hirmada L/N as a corrupt man, willing to crush his foes and the competition to get what he wants, but they see the L/N children and Hirmada's wife a blessing.

Unknown to the three, a certain ice queen was watching them, a look of sorrow. Her suspicions were correct. Yukino didn't leave her apartment much, she wanted to confirm her suspicions whether it was true or not. She got her answer as she can see the words on the stone, but not too close that the L/N children will see her. Still, sadness plagues her as she looks at the youngest L/N. Comfort was what Y/N needed.

Yukino often ponders whether her love is enough to heal him. But, she was just too nervous to tell him. Even back then, she was nervous to even get close to boy, waiting for him to get close to her. She wondered how she didn't know this. Perhaps her family knew and didn't want to tell her. She knows her sister loves her too much and will do things to protect her, but sometimes doing those things gives her older sister enjoyment. Then again, if her family didn't tell her, then they merely did this for the sake of her well being.

After all, Y/N wasn't the only one to look up to Sarashiki herself. In fact, Yukino would often come to her for love advice, even if she was a girl at such a young age.

And now those two lost role models they look up to. But they don't realize how their life are intertwined.

-----

Apologies for not uploading yesterday as I had a shit ton of errands to run that I didn't have enough time to write. Hell, I fell asleep writing this.

I also want to apologize for the short chapter as the ninth episode of Oregairu mainly focuses on Hachiman and Yui and I had no idea how to write this one so I'd rather try and create an original chapter. Sorry if it was shit or half-assed, but the next one will be longer.

Again, I apologize.
