Chapter 11: Cultural Festival

Getting near the end of season one. After the last chapter of season one, I'm going to put this book on hold for about three days, or for a week to do something new. At this point, if I make a new story, it's just "fuck it." Was going to do SAO, but because of me having a hard time and no idea when to start it...yeah. I just don't want to write something half-assed.

Secondly, I still need to watch season three of this anime as it finished a few months ago. Plus, anime is getting a bit stale for me so I might branch out to other things, most likely games. The first one I want to do is Final Fantasy 15 or FFXV. Enough of me rambling, here's the chapter. Hope y'all enjoy it.

-----

Currently, Class 2-F

Saika: Before they grow big, the baobabs start out by being little.

Hayato: But why do you want the sheep to eat the little baobabs?

Saika: (blushes slightly) Oh, come, come!

Ebina: No!

The two males were startled by Ebina's outburst. They were rehearsing for their play, but because of them being on the committee, they didn't participate.

Ebina: You know what baobabs are a metaphor for, don't you? I hope you do.

Saki and two other girls were sewing clothes together for costumes, referencing from the reference drawings that Ebina had made.

A few other people were making props for the play as well.

Ebina: The prince needs to lean in and glance upwards, as though leading him on! Like, "You know what I want, you tease! Come, come!" One more time, let's go!

Hayato sighs and he and Saika turn to face each other. Needless to say, he wasn't enjoying it. Not one bit.

Saika: (shyly looks away) Before they grow so big, the baobabs start out by being little.

Hayato: (leans in) But why do you want the sheep to eat the little baobabs?

Saika: (blushes slightly) Oh, come, come!

Enjoying her yaoi work that's coming together, blood explodes out of her nose. It concerned a few people. The committee chairman, Minami Sagami was also there, but she wasn't doing any work, rather she was just watching.

She soon gets distracted by Saki's work, who does a superb job on the costumes. The silver-blueish haired girl in question blushes slightly from the compliment.

Yui was on the side, helping on monitoring the progress when she gets a call. Checking her phone, the caller ID was labeled "Hikky." Knowing who it was, she answered the phone.

Yui: Hello? What's wrong? Why the call?

Hachiman: (on phone) You heard? Yukinoshita's out sick today?

Yui: Huh?

Hachiman: (on phone) Looks like she caught a cold.

Timeskip-End of Day, Yukino's Apartment Complex

The rest of the Service Club members, Y/N, Hachiman, and Yui, were standing outside Yukino's apartment complex. They could admit that it was nicer's than Y/N's, as the L/N's apartment complex was a bit more smaller and was less expensive than this.

Heading inside, they rung the buzzer that was near large brown gates. No one answered.

Hachiman: Asleep?

Yui: I hope so. But if she's so sick she can't get up...

???: (intercom) Hello?

Hearing the familiar voice of the ice queen was reassuring to the members.

Yui: Yukinon? It's me, Yui! Are you okay?

Yukino: (intercom) ...Yes. I'm fine, so...

With a sigh, Y/N moves Yui aside to speak to Yukino.

Y/N: Stop being stupid and let us in.

Yukino: (intercom) Why are you here?

Y/N: Just let us in. We need to talk.

A sound was made and the gates open, leading to a small lounging area. They head towards the elevator and beings to ascend to her apartment.

The elevator bell dings on the fifteenth floor and it opens to a small hallway. Heading to her room number, Yui rings the door bell, waiting for it to be opened. The door opens and Yukino seems fine for the most part. Perhaps on the outside.

Yukino: Welcome. Come in.

They head inside and it was quite nice. An open window to their right, looking out towards the city. Yukino gestures them to take a seat.

They could see her laptop and the other half of the work that she had on the coffee table. Y/N sighs in annoyance as she must have been overworking herself. Y/N may have taken half the work, but there was no reason for her to act like she was on a crunch time.

Yukino: What do we need to talk about?

Yui: Um...well...you were out sick, so I was hoping you were okay.

Yukino: I was out for one day. You're overreacting.

Yui: But you look really tired. Like, you look kind of pale.

Yukino: I was somewhat tired, but not enough to be a problem.

Yui: But that's the problem. You don't need to take on all the work yourself.

Yukino: (sighs) I know. That's why divided the tasks and reduced the load on my--

Y/N: I may have taken half, but you're overworking yourself. Simply put, it's not enough.

Yui: I'm kinda mad, okay? I'm mad at you too, Hikky! You said you'd save her if she was in trouble!

Y/N: (thoughts) When did this happen?

Yukino: He has performed his duties as assistant historian. That's sufficient.

Yui: But...

Yukino: I'm fine. We still have time. I can work from home, so we're still on schedule. You needn't be concerned, Yuigahama-san.

Yui: But that's just wrong.

Yukino: Is...it?

Hachiman: ...Relying on others.

Y/N: And helping each other out.

Hachiman: Supporting one another is the right thing to do. Nothing could be more right.

Yukino: ...I see.

Hachiman: But that's idealistic. Someone draws the short straw. So I have no intention of telling you to rely on others. But the way you're approaching this is wrong.

Yukino: ...Then you know the right way to approach it?

Y/N: Like hell he does. I don't either.

Hachiman: But it's different from the way you've approached things thus far.

A brief silence occurs and Yui then sneezes, concerning Yukinoshita.

Yukino: I'm sorry. I'll make tea.

Y/N: (sigh) Sit down. I'll make it.

Yukino: You needn't--

Y/N flicks her forehead, causing Yukino to blush and hold her forehead. She looks at the green-eyed boy in annoyance, who only pats her head.

Y/N: You've done enough. Don't overwork yourself. Besides, Haruno told me on what tea you like.

Proceeding to the kitchen, he heads in to make tea. Yukino always told herself to not burden him and yet, he always pushes on and takes tasks that aren't his. That's how Y/N was in the past and he still does it now. To some degree.

Yui watches with a smile on her face and Hachiman only closes his eyes, but smirks nonetheless. Their relationship was growing, but not up to that level. At least, not yet.

Yui: Yukinon...um...rely on me and Hikky! Even L/N-san! But not on everyone, not on others. Rely on us!

Seconds later, Y/N comes out with a tray of black tea. Handing out to everyone else, they take the cups and drink.

Y/N could see the color return to Yukino's face slightly. He leans up against the wall and Yukino looks out the window that overlooked the city. Hachiman and Yui were putting in sugar cubes to adjust the taste of their tea.

Hachiman: Well, I'm going home.

Yui: M-Me too!

The two leave, but were stopped by Yukino.

Yukino: Yuigahama-san.

Yui: Y-Yes?

Yukino: It's difficult for me right now, but one day, I will rely on you. So...thank you.

Yui: Yukinon...

Yukino: But I need some time to think.

Giving them a smile, the two leave, but Yukino was confused as to why Y/N was still here. The other black haired boy simply finishes his tea, giving off a relaxed sigh.

Y/N: Thanks for the tea.

Yukino: ...Why?

Y/N: Why what?

Yukino Why do you go so far for me? Especially when you've been suffering.

Y/N: (thoughts) Guess she found out. (normal) Why? I wonder?

He turns around with an unsure smile.

Y/N: How the hell am I supposed to know? Heh. Guess old habits die hard.

Yukino: Old habits...?

Y/N: It's nothing. See you tomorrow. And you were bound to find out what happened to her. I didn't bother to tell her as you didn't need anything else on your plate.

The green-eyed boy leaves and Yukino stood there for awhile. Old habits? She then thought back to her youth. Y/N would always find some reason to help her out. Even if there wasn't any reason to help her at all.

Going back to her room, she looks through her nightstand, pulling out a small photo. She brushed her thumb over it as it had accumulated some dust because it sat in that nightstand of hers for so long. She smiled back at the memory she remembered. It was a Christmas and there were about five or six. Their mother's had put them into the picture in front of the tree, having Yukino hold Y/N's hand.

In the picture, she was blushing a deep red and Y/N was looking the other way with a shy look.

Yukino: He's still the same. Baka...

With Y/N

Upon entering the apartment of his and his siblings, he opens the door and was met with an embrace. The warmth coming from his sister.

Y/N: What are you doing?

Setsuna: You still haven't changed when you're around her, huh?

Y/N: What are you going on about?

Setsuna: Nothing!~

Going off to resume her house chores, Y/N only stood there with a confused look. He shakes his head and he ended up thinking of her.

Laying on his bed, he covers his eyes with his arms.

Y/N: Dammit. Tsk. When did I start thinking of her? (sigh) I'll just sleep it off.

Too lazy to go into his sleepwear, he drifts off to sleep. Back in the kitchen, Setsuna was humming herself a tune as she swept the floor. The door locks could be heard outside, turning and keys were jingling as well.

Itsuki comes in and notices the cheerful look on his sister's face.

Itsuki: What's gotten you so chipper?

Setsuna: Oh nothing.~ Just love is in the air, but two people can't seem to realize it.~

Itsuki: (narrows eyes) Right.

Setsuna: On to the subject of love, why haven't you found a wife yet?

As soon as that was mentioned, Itsuki had fallen face first onto the floor.

Itsuki: Please don't mention that...

Setsuna: Nii-san, you're twenty-six. How have you not found a wife yet? In fact, why don't you just ask Hiratsuka-sensei?

Itsuki: (blushes) Sh-Shizuka!? I doubt she even like me!

Setsuna: You two have so much in common. You're both the same age and are both single.

Itsuki: (-_-) You only mentioned two things.

Setsuna: That's not the point! Just ask her already!

Itsuki: (sigh) Whatever. Night.

Not wanting to talk about the topic anymore, the oldest L/N left with a flustered face. Setsuna cheers to herself until she freezes. She didn't have a partner either.

Next Day-Conference Room

It was the next day and the committee met at the conference room.

Setsuna and Y/N at their usual spot, in chairs sitting behind Hikigaya, who was sitting in his spot as assistant historian. Sagami was over with her two friends, the three of them conversing between each other. Yukino had shown up, feeling better and was sitting in her spot.

Hayato was sitting next to Hachiman, arms crossed as he looked around the room. The meeting hadn't started yet and they were behind schedule as it was the end of the day. Across from them were Haruno, who was yawning, and Shizuka, who was sitting next to the older Yukinoshita with her arms crossed, eyes closed.

They were getting annoyed as everyone was here, but Minami wasn't taking initiative to start the meeting.

Meguri: Sagami-san, everyone is here.

Minami: Oh, okay!

She took her seat next to Yukino, who was focused on the matter at hand. Since Minami had no idea what had happened yesterday as she was slacking off and having fun, she didn't know what to talk about.

Minami: Yukinoshita-san?

Yukino: Eh? (recomposes herself) We will now begin the committee meeting. Today's topic will be, as per Shiromeguri-senpai's suggestion, the cultural festival slogan.

One of Sagami's clique members gets up from her chair and writes on the whiteboard. The caption she wrote read, "Friendship, Effort, Victory."

Disagreements were heard and the slogan kept on changing. With one last slogan being written, it read, "ONE FOR ALL."

Hayato: Oh, I like this one! "One for all." I like these kinds of ideas.

Hachiman: Yeah, looks like you get it. Simple enough.

Hayato: Huh?

Hachiman: Force one person to be the scapegoat and eliminate them. "One for all." You do it often?

Hayato: Hikigaya...

Hachiman: (flicked in the back of head) Ow! What the hell was that for?

Y/N: I didn't do anything.

Hachiman: That shit-eating grin says otherwise.

Y/N: I don't know what you're talking about.

Minami: We thought up this last one.

She got up and started write on the whiteboard. Her caption read, "Friendship Helping one another: a cultural festival."

Hachiman: Ew.

Everyone looks at him and Sagami begins to scowl.

Minami: (grits teeth) Excuse me, but is there a problem?

Hachiman: No, not really.

Minami: Sure you don't have a comment to make?

Hachiman: No, not really.

Minami: Oh, good. If you do, then come up with one yourself.

Hachiman: Then...

He begins to write on the paper and Y/N and Setsuna could get a clear view of it. Setsuna sighs and shakes her head while Y/N chuckles a bit and smirks slightly, unnoticeable.

Holding it up, it read, "Man Look closely and one of them's slacking off: a cultural festival."

Hachiman: Man. ~Look closely and one of them's slacking off: a cultural festival.~

Everyone stares at him before a laughter erupts, the commotion coming from Haruno Yukinoshita. They could also hear Y/N chuckling slightly.

Hayato was about to retaliate but grins. He may have not been there for him in the past, but he was glad Y/N was feeling somewhat better.

Haruno: (laughs) He's an idiot! He's a total idiot! That was awesome! Shoot, it's too much! (leans face on desk) My sides!

Hiratsuka: Haruno, stop laughing.

Haruno: (wipes tear) No, I mean, I think it's a great idea! Yeah! It's funny! All good!

Y/N: Yeah. It--

Setsuna: (covers Y/N's mouth) That's enough out of you.

Hiratsuka: Hikigaya. Explain.

Hachiman: Well, you know how people say the character for "man" is an ideogram of people supporting one another? But one's leaning on top of the other. I think the concept of "man" includes the assumption that one ends up a sacrifice. So I'd say its fitting for this cultural festival and the cultural festival committee.

Hiratsuka: What do you mean by "sacrifice," specifically?

Hachiman: (points to himself) Look at me, I'm totally a sacrifice here. I'm being forced to work like a slave.

Y/N: (cough) He's not wrong. (cough)

Setsuna: (death glare) Please be quiet.

Y/N: ...Hai.

Hachiman: Hell, people are shoving their own work on me. Or maybe that's what the committee chair means by "helping one another?" I've never been helped here, so I don't know what you mean.

Everyone then turns to look at Minami, who could feel the stares. She scowls even more.

Light giggling could be heard and they look to the source, it being Yukino who's face was being covered by paper. It was quite new and odd to see the ice queen giggling. She stops and brings the paper down, her usual and normal demeanor being shown.

Yukino: Hikigaya-kun.

Hachiman: Hmm?

Yukino: (smirks) Rejected.

Hachiman: Tch.

Yukino: (sigh of relief) Sagami-san, let's end the meeting here. We won't have any good suggestions.

Minami: Huh? But--

Yukino: Wasting a day on this would be a foolish decision. All committee members will think of slogans and present them tomorrow. If all members work on all remaining days, we can recover the lost time. Right?

Minami: Y-Yeah, right. Okay, everyone. We'll be meeting again tomorrow. (bows head slightly) Thanks for coming today!

Everyone begins to get up from their seats and leave. The others begin to talk trash towards Hikigaya, who sat there unfazed.

Setsuna: Well, I'll be going ahead. I'll see you at the car.

She leaves ahead of him and Y/N and Hikigaya leave.

Yukino: Are you sure?

Y/N: Eh?

Hachiman: Huh?

Yukino: You might want to resolve this misunderstanding.

Y/N: With this current state, it'll never get resolved. Besides, they're already talking about it.

Hachiman: The problem ends there.

Yukino: You make excuses for the most worthless things but never make excuses when it's most necessary.

Hachiman: There's no point in making excuses. Humans make decisions themselves when it's necessary.

Yukino: Yes. You might be right. Excuses are meaningless. Perhaps I need to ask you once more. But more importantly, what was that slogan?

Y/N: Oh, that was pretty impressive.

Yukino: It was absolutely tasteless.

Hachiman: Better than yours, at least. What are you, a thesaurus?

Yukino: You're disappointingly unchanging.

Y/N: Humans don't change that fast anyway.

Yukino: He was strange from the start.

Hachiman: If you two can't say something nice...

Yukino: (sighs) Sometimes, when I see you act, I have the notion that perhaps attempting to force change would be foolish.

Hachiman: See ya. (walks off)

Yukino: Yes. Goodbye.

Y/N: Bye. See you tomorrow.

Yukino: (quietly) See you tomorrow...Y/N.

Next Day

It was the next day and a new slogan was presented on the board. It read, "Chiba's specialties! Festivals and dancing! We're all fools, so let's dance and Sing a Song."

Yukino: This will be the slogan for this year's cultural festival. Sagami-san, we should advertise using this slogan immediately.

Minami: O-Oh, okay. Advertising, please.

Boy: All right, guys! Posters, on the double!

Girl: Vice-Chair, home page test update complete!

Yukino: Understood. Sagami-san, confirm.

Minami: Huh? Y-Yeah, okay.

Yukino: Upload it to the main server.

Girl: Roger!

Minami only stared at the scene in front of her. Her uselessness was getting to her as she couldn't do anything.

Everyone was doing their part, Y/N and Hayato were helping out with documents, Setsuna giving pointers and helping with the posters, and Hachiman was doing his duties as assistant historian. Hachiman scowls as even more paperwork starts to pile up.

He suddenly feels something pat his head, turning to see Haruno Yukinoshita.

Haruno: Hey there, working hard?

Hachiman: As you can see.

Haruno: Doesn't look like you're working that hard.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Why!? I totally am!

Haruno: I mean, you haven't put your own achievements in the record. Time for a quiz! What makes a group come together like nothing other?

Hachiman: A coldhearted tyrant?

Haruno: Oh, come on. You know. It's an enemy. Well, the enemy here is kinda wimpy.

Hachiman: Oh, shut up.

Haruno: But as long as you played the villain, you got a heroic response. If the enemy slacks off, the group doesn't grow. Conflict brings about the development of technology.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Wow, could you shut up? (normal) Um...did you purposely make--

Haruno: (puts a finger to Hachiman's lips) I don't like boys who can catch on.

She grins as she does so. They hear a thud on the desk as Yukino had put even more workload onto Hachiman's plate.

Yukino: Assistant, back to work. Document that the slogan has been determined. Also, the record of proceedings. Inform all participants of the slogan as well. Oh, and upload all group participation requests to the server as well.

Setsuna and Y/N were watching from the side, a grin bearing Setsuna's face.

Setsuna: Her "demon" side is showing. I'm so proud.

Y/N: Don't act like you don't have one either, Nee-san.

Setsuna: (pulls rope out) You were saying?

Y/N: ...Nothing.

Yukino: Finish it all today.

Haruno: Need me to help too?

Yukino: You just get in the way. Go home.

Y/N: Can my sister go home too?

Yukino: And let you leave scot free? I don't think so.

Y/N: Are you asking me to get tortured?

Yukino: Perhaps.

Setsuna: Move it Y/N! Get back to work!

Haruno: (fake pain) You're mean! Yukino-chan, you're so mean! Well, I'm bored, so I'll help out anyway.

Yukino: (sigh) We need to review the finances again. Could you do that?

Haruno: Okay!~ Now this is how you get work done!

Setsuna: Is that a challenge?

Haruno: Oh? Is our rivalry coming back?

Setsuna: You tell me.

The two butt heads as a yellow spark bounces off their foreheads in a cartoon-like manner, grins on their faces as they seemed to be enjoying this.

Y/N chuckles slightly. His sister is usually working a lot and his sister was enjoying himself. Y/N turns his attention to Minami, who was sitting at her desk doing nothing. Y/N only scoffs and goes back to what he was doing.

Timeskip

It was time for the cultural festival to start and Hachiman was in the back, a headpiece on his head as the mic was near his mouth.

Hachiman: Three minutes to curtains. Three minutes to curtains.

Yukino: (earpiece) Yukinoshita to all hands. We are proceeding on time. Report any delays immediately.

Boy 1: (earpiece) Lights, all clear!

Boy 2: (earpiece) PA system, all clear!

Girl 1: (earpiece) Green room, cast preparations behind, but should complete before show time.

Yukino: (earpiece) All hands, stand by for cue.

The scene then drifts off to Yukino, who was standing behind the curtains, peering out of the side, staring out at the crowd of students.

Ten seconds go by and the stage lights turn on, revealing the student council president, Meguri Shiromeguri, standing cheerfully on the stage, the slogan behind her.

Meguri: Are you ready to culture!?

The crowd cheers as the cultural festival was about to begin. Their screams of joy were getting things excited.

Meguri: Chiba's specialties! Festivals and...

Everyone: Dancing!

Meguri: We're all fools, so let's dance and...

Everyone: Sing a song!

A performance then shows on the stage, Meguri moving off of it to make way for the cheerleaders and dancers. Colored lights begin to show as the show goes on.

Boy: (intercom) PA here. Cutting music momentarily.

Yukino: Roger. Chairwoman Sagami, stand by.

Minami walks up, waiting for the curtains to unveil her. She was nervous. Outside the curtains, Shiromeguri was back on the stage, presenting an announcement.

Meguri: And now, a word from the committee chairwoman!

Walking off to the side, Minami hesitantly walks out onto the stage. Y/N was at the back, near the entrance of the auditorium. He simply closes his eyes and walks out.

Minami stood on the stage and brought the mic to her mouth, taking a deep breath.

Minami: Hi--

She was cut off as a loud sound erupted from the mic, causing everyone to cover their ears. This also caused everyone to laugh at her, making her embarrassed.

Meguri: (steps onto stage) Okay, let's have a do-over! Committee chairwoman, go ahead!

Sagami then goes into her skirt pocket to take a piece of paper out, but it falls and she goes to pick it up. Everyone then laughs at her again. While it was funny, they were falling behind schedule.

Y/N was peeking through the doors of where he walked out.

Y/N: She's making a fool of herself. Whatever.

Instead of watching her, Y/N heads down to class 2-F to check on them. Later on, ut was now open to the public and everyone were going around to the classes events.

In class 2-F, Y/N was standing off to the side, watching the yaoi play with his sister.

Saika: I did not know how to understand anything! I ought to have listened to him. He cast his fragrance and radiance over me.

Hayato: (brings Saika closer) You were too young to know how to love him.

Saika: (blushes)

The girls were enjoying this, finding this as the main event. Setsuna practically had a nosebleed, concerning her younger brother.

Setsuna: (blushes) I-It's...too...good...

Y/N was very concerned as his sister was enjoying it. He then begins to hear whispers from the crowd.

Girl 1: It's a shame that L/N couldn't do it.

Girl 3: Yeah. He was on the committee.

Girl 2: If only he could do the role. It would have been so hot!~

Y/N: Kill me... (thoughts) And she wanted me to play this role!?

Saika: Tonight--you know...do not come.

Hayato: No, but why not? I said, I shall not leave you.

The crowd begins to cry tears of joy, screaming in happiness. Setsuna was on the floor, hugging herself as she was crying.

Setsuna: It's so beautiful! Y/N! Why couldn't you be Totsuka's role!?

Y/N: I was on the committee. It's not my fault. (thoughts) Besides, I didn't want to do this. I'll have to thank Totsuka later for taking the role for me.

Saika: It was wrong of you to come. You will suffer.

Hayato: I shall not leave you!

Saika: Here it is! Let me go on by myself!

Hayato: I shall not leave you!

Setsuna's nose then erupts even more blood, causing her to pass out.

Y/N: Oi...Nee-san...shit.

Hayato: So you have chosen him over me. But it is well. I shall see you again soon. Because...when I drew the muzzle for the sheep, I did not draw the leather strap.

The light turns off and Setsuna quickly gets back up, wiping her nose as she starts to clap with the other girls, cheering and applauding the performance. Y/N shakes his head and sighs with annoyance.

After the performance, Y/N was sitting on the roof of the school with his cousin. They still had time before they had to go to their shifts.

Saki: Did you enjoy the performance?

Y/N: Hell no. Nee-san sure did.

Saki: How so?

Y/N: She had damn nosebleed the entire time.

Saki starts to giggle before she bursted out laughing. She then glances over to Y/N, who was deep in thought.

Saki: Something on your mind?

Y/N: ...Thinking about some things.

Saki: Like what?

Y/N: What happens when you keep thinking of someone and you just can't get them out of your head?

Saki: Depends on who you're thinking on. I have a good feeling of what it is though. The question is, will you follow that feeling?

Y/N: Huh?

Saki: Just think on it. It's kinda sad that you can't see it.

His cousin leaves, leaving Y/N to ponder the question. Yukino Yukinoshita then flashes in his mind again.

Y/N: Again? Why...

Meanwhile

Currently, Minami Sagami was sitting in a stall in the girls bathroom. Her face had no emotion whatsoever.

------

Today was Veteran's day so I had enough time to finish this. About more than 4300 words. Anyway, hope y'all enjoyed this chapter and await the next one. Thanks and stay safe out there.
