4. Lucky Day

(This day is split into two parts. 4th and 5th are both parts of the same day.)

James' POV

Beep. Beep. Beep.

I groaned and attempted to throw a pillow at the nastily offending object that tried to wake me up.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

There it went again.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

"Ugh, for God's sake, SHUT UP!" I yelled at the alarm clock. I got up and turned it off. I pulled at random clothes from my trunk and waltzed into the bathroom. I took a shower, shampooed, brushed my teeth all in 5 minutes.

"James, are you ready?" A voice called out.

"Yes, I'm ready, Lily!" I swung my bag over my shoulder and ran to meet Lily.

She was tapping her foot impatiently, looking as gorgeous as ever. Her hair was atop her head in a messy bun. Her brilliant emerald eyes were sparkling with the thirst to know more about the magical world. Her uniform and robes were neatly ironed. She was wearing black ballet flats. I took in her beauty and said, "Good morning, Lily. How are you?"

She smiled brightly and replied, "Good morning. I'm good. Shall we go?" I nodded and opened the painting.

"After you, M'lady." Lily chuckled and rolled her eyes, nonetheless exiting the dormitory first. I shut the door softly and followed. We entered the Great Hall and took our separate seats at the Gryffindor table.

"What's up today, Sirius?" I asked brightly, helping myself to bacon, eggs, toast, and a cup of tea.

"What do you mean? Studying, of course. And a prank on the snakes." Sirius grinned mischievously, helping himself to my toast.

"Hey! Get your food!" I said indignantly, swatting his hand away.

"Why ever would I do that, Prongs?" He winked at me. Before I could respond, Remus and Peter muttered their greetings and took their seats. They helped themselves to breakfast.

"So, should we prank the snakes today?" Padfoot asked hopefully, excitement alight in his eyes.

"Yeah, I suppose." Remus shrugged. We all stared at him in bewilderment. He raised his eyebrows in question.

"Who are you, what have you done with Remus Lupin, and how did you get close enough to him to get his hair for Polyjuice?"

Sirius asked, gaping. Remus just smirked in response and winked at us.

"So, what are we going to do? Turn their robes Gryffindor colors?" Peter asked, furrowing his eyebrows. (As much as I hate it, I had to add him.) We all pondered over it until Sirius jumped with excitement.

"What?" We asked him in unison.

"We could sneak into their common room tonight and turn their shampoos pink and blue." We nodded, telling him to continue.

"It won't affect Snivelly because he has never washed his hair once in his entire life. He will be the only one to come in with his normal hair, indicating he was the one who pranked them, resulting in his detention." Sirius finished proudly. We all grinned, imagining the idea in our heads. A throat cleared behind us. We turned to see Professor McGonagall holding out our schedules.

"Alright there, Minnie?" I asked her, flashing her my signature smile. She rolled her eyes, moving onto others, though she couldn't conceal her smile. My schedule was-

1st: Potions

2nd: Potions

3rd: Lunch

4th: Transfiguration

5th: Free

6th: Divination

Padfoot and I had all classes the same. Remus had Ancient Runes instead of Divination. Peter had Herbology instead of Divination. I finished my breakfast and waited for Padfoot to finish his. Soon, we reached the dungeons. Only a few students were there, including Lily.

"Evans!" I called out to her. She came over to me.

"Please be my partner." I used my puppy dog face on her. She let out a tinkling laugh.

"Ok, ok." She agreed.

She took her seat next to me and continued reading her book. Soon, all students arrived and were seated as Professor Slughorn entered, beaming. Peter partnered with Mary, and Remus partnered with Sirius.

"Welcome to your seventh year! This year is going to be the toughest so far. So who can tell me what potion is that?" He pointed to one of the four cauldrons at the front of the class, which I hadn't noticed before. Lily's hand shot into the air faster than a bullet.

"Yes, Lily?"

"That one is Veritaserum, sir. It is a transparent, odorless potion that forces the drinker to tell the truth."

"Very good," Slughorn beamed at her, " ten points to Gryffindor. And that one?" He pointed to a dull grey one. Lily's hand was in the air again.

"Yes, Lily?"

"It's Polyjuice potion, sir. It allows the drinker to assume the appearance of someone else for an hour or more, depending on the quantity."

Slughorn clapped his hands together and awarded another ten points to Gryffindor. Next, he pointed to a bright pink potion. Just watching it made me want to puke.

"And that one, dear?" Slughorn asked. Lily gasped.

"That's Amortentia, sir! It is the strongest love potion in the world. The smell of the potion varies from person to person and is dependent upon what each individual finds appealing."

"I assume you recognized it by its mother-of-pearl sheen?" Slughorn inquired.

"And its spiraling steam, sir." Slughorn beamed.

"Fifteen points to Gryffindor! Amortentia, as flawlessly described by Miss Evans, is the most powerful love potion in the world. Of course, it doesn't create love! It causes a powerful obsession from the drinker."

"Any questions?" Slughorn looked around. A Ravenclaw had raised his hand.

"Yes?"

"You haven't told us what that one does." He said, pointing to the molten gold-colored potion. Slughorn clapped his hand to his forehead dramatically.

"Oh!" He exclaimed. "That, ladies and gentlemen, is-"

"Felix Felicis!" Lily exclaimed, gaping.

"Yes! Does anyone know what it does? But, of course, Lily, you do!"

"Felix Felicis, also called liquid luck, is a magical potion that makes the drinker lucky for some time, during which everything they attempt will be successful," Lily recited as though she had memorized the whole Potions book. Slughorn couldn't be happier.

"Yes. Overuse can cause giddiness and reckless behavior. Desperately tricky to make, disastrous should you get it wrong. It's banned on any special events or Quidditch matches. Watch how it turns an ordinary day into an extraordinary one!" Everyone clapped excitedly. "But today, we will be brewing the Draught of Living Death. The best potion will achieve a small vial of Felix. You have one hour. Turn to page 10 for instructions." Everyone rushed to get their ingredients. Lily stood up too, but I stopped her.

"I'll get the ingredients."

"Ok." She replied.

I collected powdered Root of Asphodel, Infusion of Wormwood, Valerian Sprigs, Sloth Brain, Juice of a Sopophorous Bean, and went back to our seat. Lily had already started a fire under a cauldron.

The following was written in the book:

Add the Infusion of Wormwood.Add the Powdered Root of Asphodel.Stir twice clockwise.Add the sloth brain.Add the Sopophorous bean's juice.Stir seven times anti-clockwise.

So that's what we did. By the end of one hour, only two pairs had managed to make any progress. Lily and I were the only ones who had been able to turn our draught a pale lilac shade. Snape and his partners' somewhat resembled but wasn't as perfect. Slughorn dropped a leaf in ours, and it crumbled perfectly. He looked like he was about to wet himself with delight.

"A perfect Draught of Living Death! A vial of Felix Felicis each to Mr. Potter and Ms. Evans!" The class clapped unhappily.

With that, he dismissed the class. We couldn't be more delighted.
