3rd Person's POV
"It won't work again, baby."
Bella frowns looking over at her mother Rene, "You put it on hold."
Rene frowns in confusion, "I did?"
Bella nods chuckling, "Look. You also called Mexico."
Rene pushes her playfully, they laugh.
"I'll figure it out. You gotta be able to reach me and Phil on the road- I love saying that- on the road."
"Very romantic." Bella replies sarcastically.
Phil was 31, good looking with an athlete's body. He exits the house carrying Bella's three suitcases with ease.
"If you call crappy motels, backwater towns and ballpark hot dogs romantic."
He puts his Phoenix Desert Dogs baseball hat on Rene's head with a kiss. Phil's love of Rene reassures Bella. Phil heads to the old station wagon to load the luggage, while Rene slips her arm through Bella's, clinging to her as they walk to car.
"Now, you know if you change your mind, I'll race back here from wherever the game is."
But Rene's strained expression tells Bella what a great sacrifice that would be. Bella forces a smile.
"I won't change my mind, mom."
Rene shrugs, "You might. You've always hated Forks."
"It's not about Forks, it's about Dad. I mean, two weeks a year, we barely know each other."
Bella sighs and watches Rene's still worried look on her face, "Mom, I want to go. I'll be fine."
But as Rene hugs Bella, her face holds dread, doubt, and regret.
...
Bella sits next to her uniformed father, police chief, Charlie Swan. Who was taciturn, introverted like Bella. Their strained silence contrasts Bella's relationship with her mother.
Charlie peeks over at Bella then clears his throat, "Your hair's longer."
Bella nods slightly still looking outside, "I cut it since last time I saw you."
Charlie nods, "Guess it grew out again."
Bella just nods then a long silence fills the car once again.
"How's your mom?"
"Good. "
More silence.
They pass a welcome sign that states, "The City Of Forks Welcomes You- Pop. 3246."
Bella sighs.
"Well my sister is back. She can't wait to see you." Charlie smiles peeking at Bella once more.
"Oh good."
As the cruiser drives through empty street, Bella takes in the logging town. Almost every storefront had a wood carving. The Timber Museum's sign was two loggers sawing a stump. The police station also happened to be a small wooden building across from City Hall.
The cruiser pulls up to the old two-story house Bella remembered she visited almost once every year. She climbs out slowly looking at her home for the time being.
Charlie hops out the car and helps carry in her bags. The house isn't stylish or new, the only new thing new looking was a Flat Screen T.V., but it's comfortable, lived-in home. There was also lots of fishing memorabilia; photos of Charlie fishing with Quileute Indian, Billy Black. Handmade cards to "Daddy" and photos of Bella were all around the living room. She winces at herself, age 7, in a tutu, sitting stubbornly on the ground.
"I put Grandpa's old desk in your room. And I cleared some shelves in the bathroom."
Bella nods grimacing, "That's right. One bathroom."
Bella's eye lands on a photo of a much younger Charlie and Rene, on vacation, beaming with love.
Charlie sighs before grabbing Bella's bag once more, "I'll just put these up in your room-"
"I can do it-"
They both reach for the bags, bumping one another awkwardly. Bella backs off, letting Charlie carry the bags upstairs.
An antique rolltop desk sits in a corner. The room is filled with childhood remnants that have seen better days. As she unpacks her CD case, loneliness finally overwhelms her. She sits heavily on the edge of the bed, tears threatening.
Then she hears a honk outside. Bella runs across the hall and looks out the window to see a faded red truck, Circa 1960 pull up.
Bella looks down at the two figures that get out the truck interested. She stares at the boy realizing she knew him from when they were kids and sighs. Nodding to herself almost as if she were trying to give herself a pep talk, she runs down the stairs and exits the house to find Charlie greeting the driver.
Jacob Black, a Quileute Indian, amiable with long black hair, and hints of childish roundness in his face stands by Charlie after helping his father into a wheelchair.
"Bella, you remember Billy Black."
Billy smiles, "Glad you're finally here. Charlie hasn't shut up about it since you told him you were coming."
Charlie scoffs as his face slightly reddens, "Keep exaggerating, I'll wheel you down the hill."
"Right after I ram you in the ankles." Billy jokes as he takes several rolls at Charlie, who dodges.
Jacob shakes his head at their two fathers as he shyly approaches Bella, "I'm Jacob. We made mud pies together when we were little kids."
"Yeah... I think I remember..." Bella nods before glancing over at their dads who were now in the road messing with one another, "Are they always like this?"
"It's getting worse with old age."
Before Bella can say anything else, Charlie pops back up and pats the hood of the truck, addressing Bella.
"So what do you think of your homecoming gift?"
Bella chuckles nervously, "No way. The truck is for me?"
Charlie shrugs with a smile, "Just bought it off Billy, here."
Jacob notices Bella's shocked face and thinks she is upset so tries to say something to get her excited, "I rebuilt the engine and-"
But Bella is happier than she looks.
"It's perfect!" She beams.
It's the first genuine smile that she had shown in a while. She rushes to the truck as Jacob eagerly joins her.
"Okay, so you gotta double pump the clutch when you shift, but-" He hands her the keys as she climbs in.
Bella nods, "Maybe I can give you a ride to school."
Jacob frowns, "I go to school on the reservation."
Sighing Bella slumps slightly, "Too bad. Would've been nice to know at least one person."
"Well that's kind of rude baby cousin... seeing as you'll know me."
Bella jumps as she looks to her left. A tall boy with brunette hair and brown eyes stands with his head in the truck. Bella looks at him in confusion before scoffing and chuckling a little.
"Beau!"
"The one and only! What's up Bella?"
Bella opens the door and quickly pulls Beau into a hug. Jacob gets out the car and walks to the other side standing nearby politely.
Jacob was surprised. Bella wasn't a very touchy feely person yet she was the one to hug Beau.
Bella was very close to her cousin and that was one person who she didn't mind being in her space as much as she loved it.
Pulling away from Beau she looks up at him with a raised eyebrow, "Wow you've gotten tall."
"Growth spurt. What can I say? Hey man I'm Beau."
Beau holds out his hand allowing Jacob to shake it.
"Jacob. Everyone calls me Jake."
"Wow I can't believe this you're going to school with me?" Bella punches Beau's shoulder.
"Yup."
"Oh thank God I won't be the only new kid. I hate attention."
Jacob chuckles.
"Well if you think it's great that I'm going to school with you... wait till you meet my sister. You'll love her. Just don't piss her off, she will kill you."
Beau smiles but Bella frowns after his last comment. Bella thinks about what Beau's sister could possibly look like. Rebecca was gorgeous and Beau was good looking, totally not in a weird way, that's her cousin. But she wondered if Beau's sister was pretty and smart. Maybe even quiet like her.
"Wait since when do you have a sister. Mom and Charlie never told me about her. I didn't think Rebecca was dating anyone."
"Nah she's not. And my sister's adopted."
"Oh okay... Wow well I can't wait to meet her."
"Same... I'm sure me and my dad will be around." Jacob smiles.
"Bella!"
Bella whips around just in time to catch herself as a body flings itself into her arms. She gasps trying to breath as the person squeezes the life out of her.
Beau chuckles trying to pry Rebecca off Bella, "Mom, stop... you're killing her."
"Oh sorry Bells. It's so great to see you again. It's been so long. Look at how big you've gotten."
"Yeah it's great to see you too. Both of you. Can't believe you guys are Charlie's neighbor."
Rebecca slightly frowns hearing Bella call her brother by his first name. She knew how hard the divorce took a toll of Charlie and Rene but she had hoped Rene hadn't influenced Bella's judge of character of her dad in any way.
"I'm so excited for a fresh start. I hope you guys love it here. I don't know why I ever moved away."
"Because you wanted to be a big shot city photographer."
Rebecca smiles seeing her brother walk over with Billy wheeling by his side.
"Well I was for a bit. Then got bored and wanted to become a teacher. So I started teaching photography to high schoolers."
Charlie pulls Rebecca into a hug, "Well I'm just glad you're back little sis."
"I'm glad too."
