Chapter Twelve: The Newest Prospect
Chapter Twelve: The Newest Prospect
Selena's green eyes took in the Romero Brothers scrapyard as she pulled her car through the gate. She was hesitant as she parked her car and turned off the engine — she was sure EZ hadn't misspelled the address when the brunette received a text from the Reyes man earlier in the day, but it looked like she had just drove into a scene from a horror movie.
A sigh left her lips as her green eyes scanned the text from EZ — double checking that she did indeed have the correct address before exiting the car. Selena ran a hand through her hair while looking around the dusty scrapyard, her eyes looking for EZ or at least an office of sorts.
It had been a few weeks since Selena had asked EZ to try and talk to Letty, and she hadn't heard from the Reyes man in weeks while she waited patiently to see if he could give her any information on the teenager. In fact, the brunette had seen EZ either — unless you counted the times she saw him riding around Santo Padre with his brother. It had been a while since he had stepped foot in the bookstore — which had put a bit of a damper on Selena's mood at first — she had grown use to the Reyes man stopping in, but she quickly told herself to get over it. They both had busy lives.
You could imagine Selena's surprise then when she received a text from EZ with an address to the scrapyard and asking her if she had the time to go there today. He had some news about Letty. Of course the brunette would make time to see him — she wanted to know if Letty was alright. She hadn't known the teenager for long, but she felt a need to protect the girl.
"Hola." A bald man with prosthetic fingers waved towards Selena with a welcoming smile on his face, "how can I help you?" He asked, the smile still in tact on his face as he stared at the green eyed brunette.
Selena stared at the man's fingers for a moment her brow furrowing before she quickly removed her gaze from his hands and onto the man's smiling face.
"Oh, um. I'm looking for EZ Reyes." Selena spoke while placing a smile on her face.
The bald man in front of her seemed a little bit odd but she could tell he was harmless. The brunette could sense that he was a genuinely sweet person and that put her a bit a ease.
"You must be Selena." The smile on his face grew larger, "I'm Chucky." The man she had know come to know as Chucky said while pointing to himself.
A small laugh left the brunette's lips. She didn't know this man yet, but she liked him.
"Nice to meet you, Chucky. I'm Selena, but you seem to already know that." Selena let out a laugh as her eyebrow raised ever so slightly.
"EZ talks about you." The sentence slipped easily from Chucky's mouth as though it was a well known fact that EZ Reyes talked about the brunette woman. "He's in the trailer over there." The bald man said while pointing towards a small trailer.
"Thank you, Chucky." Selena smiled warmly at the bald man before walking off towards the small trailer.

It was quiet in the small trailer as Selena sat across from EZ at the small table slowly sipping on a glass of water. The brunette was trying to shake the awkwardness that had taken over since the moment she stepped foot in the trailer. She wasn't sure why it had grown awkward — maybe it was the smile EZ has given her that made heartbeat speed up just a bit or maybe it was the way his hand brushed against hers when he handed her the glass of water, but whatever it was Selena needed to push it aside.
"Chucky seems nice." Selena spoke while placing the glass down on the table.
"Yeah. He's a good guy." EZ nodded while rubbing the back of his neck.
EZ couldn't pinpoint why the atmosphere in the trailer was awkward. Maybe it was the smile Selena had given him when he opened the door for her, or maybe it was the way her hand brushed against his as he handed her a glass of water. Whatever it was though EZ needed to push it aside.
"So I got in contact with Letty." EZ said, his brown eyes watching Selena's green eyes lit up with a hint of hopefulness at his words. It hurt him to know that that hopefulness would soon be gone. "She said she's sorry but she's not coming back to work." The Reyes man said letting out a sigh.
It had taken EZ a few weeks to finally get in contact with Letty — honestly he had forgotten Selena had asked him to find out the whereabouts of the teenager until he drove passed the bookstore one night and saw Selena and the new girl she had hired closing up. He hadn't meant to forget about the brunette asking for his help, but club shit and shit with the rebels was taking over his life at the moment. It honestly felt like EZ didn't have a moment to breath let alone try and track down a rebellious teenager with a bad attitude.
"Oh." Selena said softly as the hopefulness faded from her bright green eyes at EZ's words. "That woman who came into the store?" The brunette questioned as she drew a circle around the rim of the glass, her green eyes staring into EZ's brown ones.
"That's Celia. Letty's mom." The Reyes man answered while staring into the brunette's green eyes. He swore he could stare into them for hours — day even and not get bored.
It didn't shock Selena to hear that that tactless woman was Letty's mother. It sadden her to hear the more than anything. Selena knew what it was like to have a mother like that. Sure she didn't know to what extend what this Celia woman was like, but she had an idea and she felt terrible for Letty.
"I should of guessed that." Selena said with a sigh. "Maybe this Celia woman and my mother should meet. They'd probably be best friends." The laugh that left Selena's throat was short and bitter, and one EZ had yet to hear from the brunette.
EZ remained silent, he wasn't sure what to say. Selena had already told him that her mother was a hard woman to explain, and he could tell by the look on her face that it was a touchy subject for the brunette. The Prospect didn't want to say the wrong thing or ask the wrong question so he just sat there being silent — it was the safest choice.
"Thank you." Selena spoke again after a moment of silence passed between them.
"No problem." EZ nodded.
"I should get going." The brunette announced as she stood up from the table. "I don't want to take up too much of your time." She smiled while walking the short distance towards the door.
"You're not." He assured the brunette with a smile.
In fact, EZ wished he had a way to make Selena stay longer. He wanted to talk more to the beautiful green eyed brunette who seemed to have staring role in all of his dreams lately.
"Thank you again, EZ." Selena said again as she turned around, smiling up at the Reyes man as she stood at the bottom of the small steps that led out of the trailer.
"It's really no problem, Selena." He assured the brunette once again with a smile.
"Call me Lena." She told him with a smile.
EZ nodded at the sound of the nickname leaving her lips. A special feeling took over his body as he smiled at the brunette. He knew only a handful of people had gotten the opportunity to call her Lena, and now he was one of them. EZ felt special.
"There's —"
The loud rumble of motorcycles cut EZ off as he tore his eyes away from Selena, mentally cursing to himself as he watched Angel's bike pull into the scrapyard. A sigh left the prospect's lips as he quickly noticed Diego's bike pull into the lot behind Angel's. He turned his attention back to Selena, studying her face and taking note of the confusion written across her face.
"Why is Diego here?" The brunette questioned more to herself than to EZ as she watched her younger brother park his bike and share a laugh with the older Reyes brother.
Selena didn't bother to say another word to EZ before she walked off towards where her brother was. The leather vest on his back didn't go unnoticed by her green eyes as she made her way closer to him — she could make out a Prospect patch just like the one EZ's held.
"Diego?" Selena questioned with her arms across her chest as she stood behind her brother. "What are you doing here?" She asked with a furrowed brow.
"Hey, Lena." Diego turned around at the sound of his sister's voice, a sheepish smile on his face.
Selena remained silent as she stared down her brother, her arms still across her chest as she waited for him to say something more than just a simple 'hey'. The brunette knew Diego had been sending a lot of time away from home and when he was home he was coming in at odd hours of the night — it just never occurred to her to think he had joined the local gang she had heard so much about throughout Santo Padre. Honestly she had thought he was spending most of his time with Sarah or some other girl.
"Uh," Diego rubbed the back of his neck. "Let's talk." He said as he walked away from his bike and towards his sister.
"Yeah. Let's." Selena nodded as she turned on her heel, brushing past EZ — who she didn't even realize had followed her as she followed Diego to a less populated area.
"Your girlfriend is gonna kick his ass." Angel laughed as he lit up a cigarette, watching the newest Mayan prospect walk off with his fuming older sister following closely behind.
EZ nodded in agreement at his brother's words as he watched the two siblings walk away from them.
"Are you going to explain, D? Or are we just going to stand here?" The brunette questioned her brother as she leaned against her car.
"There's not much to explain, Lena." Diego let out a sigh as he ran a hand through his growing hair. "I'm the newest Mayan prospect."
"That's fucking obvious, Diego." Selena hissed as she eyed the leather vest. "Why?" She asked. "Why would you join a fucking gang?"
Granted, Selena didn't know much about the Mayans besides what she had heard from other people's mouths, and she didn't want to judge because who was she to judge? But she didn't want her brother getting involved with something he couldn't get himself out of.
"Lena," Diego sighed. "Stop listening to other people. The Mayans are so much more than what people say about them. They're not a gang. It's a fucking family and it's people looking out for each other and making sure Santo Padre and the people of Santo Padre are safe." He ranted as his chest filled with pride.
"I don't want you getting in trouble, D." Selena said with a sigh as she took in her brother's passionate words. "I don't want you getting too in over your head with all of this."
Selena knew she couldn't tell her brother what to do. She may not have liked what he was choosing to do with his life, but he was his own person and he could make his own choices.
"Don't worry about me so much, Lena." Diego assured his older sister. "I'm good." He promised her with a wide smile.
"Okay." Selena nodded.
"There's a party tonight." Diego said. "You should stay for it. You can meet everyone and have some fun. It's been a while since you did anything besides spend all day in the bookstore." He pointed out.
"Uh," Selena hummed while running a hand through her dark hair.
Diego hadn't been wrong. Lately all she seemed to be doing was spending most of her days at the bookstore and then coming home to a bottle of wine and falling asleep on the couch with the tv on. It was pathetic.
"You sure that's okay with everyone?" The brunette asked as her green eyes looked over to where EZ stood.
"Fuck yeah!" Diego said while placing his arm across his sister's shoulders. "Everyone has been wanting to meet you." He added with a toothy smile.
"Okay. I'll stay." Selena smiled.
Diego was right she really needed to have some fun. She really needed to let loose lately. Especially with everything that had gone on in her life in the past couple of months. Maybe tonight what just what she needed to start feeling better.
