prologue

Birthday

Two more hours. Only two more hours. Isabella reminded herself, running to her job. If I am late again they're gonna fire me. Izzy managed to get in right on time, already seeing Hana, Laska and Riley. The rest was supposed to come later.

"Izzy, darling, do me one strong coffee!" Riley yelled at her friend as she walked to the staff room to put on her uniform. Isabella laughed it off, closing herself in the room. There wasn't even that much of changing to do, but she did need to wear brown dungarees instead of her favorite skirt that she came in. Thankfully it didn't look half bad.

She left the staff room, going behind the desk to prepare Riley's order, which she knew damn well she wouldn't pay today. They all decided that today was the day Izzy would pay for everything they ordered because of her birthday. Their logic sometimes killed her.

"Alright, one black coffee for Riles, latte for Hana, and americano for Laska," Izzy said, placing all three drinks on the table. "Are Amy and Astran coming anytime soon? I could get started on their drinks too."

"Astran won't come until his class ends, which is in like an hour, but Amy should be here soon." Hana answered, thanking her for the latte. "She said she'll pay for hers and mine drinks so you don't have to by the way." Izzy chuckled, shaking her head.

"See? Not that hard." she said towards her other two friends.

"I don't have the money to pay for my coffee every day, come on." Riley answered, acting hurt over the fact she even dared to suggest that. "And we know you actually do want to pay for us." she added, making Laska giggle and nod.

"Of course I do," Izzy said sarcastically, rolling her eyes but laughing. "What about Robin and Tessa? Are they coming?"

"Robin should be here any minute. She didn't want to miss a second." Riley spoke up, already trying her coffee.

"Alright, I'll prepare her drink then," Izzy nodded, leaving them again.

"I am here!" the brunette yelled as she walked in, making everyone look her way. "Tell me you didn't have a cake yet."

"Robin, shut up!" Izzy commanded, but laughed quietly anyway, taking her coffee to their table. "I will make you leave if I have to"

"Okay," she chuckled, sitting beside Riley. "Where the hell is the rest? I wanna eat the birthday cake." She whined, making even Hana chuckle. Isabel noticed before that Hana was getting intimidated by Robin's energy and extroverted personality, but it seemed like she was getting more comfortable by each day.

The group started easily, only with Isabel and Hana. They were just high school classmates and then figured out they vibe well together, even dating each other for a while. From that day they started hanging out and Izzy met her sister - Amy. She became part of the group and Izzy's best friend soon after. She then introduced them to Astran, who they just clicked with right away. Alaska, Riley, Robin and Tessa became their friends last year when they met them at a party. Izzy tried to flirt with Alaska until she figured she was straight and they started talking as friends. That's when this little group was completed. Even though they haven't known each other that long, they still acted as if they had.

"Do you guys have a pen by any chance?" Hana asked, suddenly smiling at her arm.

"Here," Izzy offered, handing her her pen for work, looking at what she was writing. "God damn, I still need to wait another two hours!" Isabel whined. "I finally want to be able to text my soulmate too."

"Only an hour and forty minutes," Laska corrected her, hoping it might help.

"Still too long,"

"It's not that great anyway," Robin commented, taking a sip of her coffee. "My soulmate barely texts me. He is totally ignoring me all the time."

"Are we even surprised?" Riley laughed. "You probably scared him away."

"That's nothing," Laska started, looking at Robin. "My brother keeps complaining to me because he still hasn't got any message."

"Hyunjin?"

"Yea, everyone keeps teasing him about it," She nodded. "Including me," She added, making Izzy chuckle. None of them were surprised she does that.

"You have to bring him to hang out with us soon, I want to laugh at him too," Riley commented.

"Okay, okay, enough. Stop ruining my dream. My soulmate will be amazing." Izzy said confidently.

"You surely can believe that," Hana chuckled, giving her back the pen. "This whole soulmate thing doesn't even work. I am pretty sure my soulmate is my dog, not some guy, writing on my arm."

"We are better off without them." Robin nodded and Izzy decided to leave them alone, going back to work. Only one hour and thirty-five minutes left.

"So, what did we miss?" Astran asked, walking in with Tessa.

"A cake," Robin said right away, making some space for the two of them.

"Really?"

"No," Izzy answered with a small chuckle, walking to the group again. "Hana still needs to go pick it up."

"I can go," Robin suggested.

"No way," Isabella said right away. "The reason Hana is picking it up is because I don't believe you guys. You specifically would eat it before we could even take a look."

"Fair enough," Riley laughed.

"Alright, I'll go, but I want the biggest piece." Hana said, standing up. Izzy laughed, nodding to her.

"You know you would get it either way," Izzy whispered to her, making her chuckle. Hana left the café soon after, making Izzy go back to work again. It was not like the place would be full, it's usually not at this hour, but she still needed to make sure the manager wasn't going to fire her.

"Excuse me," an almost head taller male came to her, making Izzy pay attention to the customers again. "I need 4 lattes and...it doesn't matter, they shouldn't have made me do it, 4 black coffees," He muttered as Izzy wrote down the order, looking back at him. "Oh and it's on Alaska." He added and Izzy finally realized where she had seen him before. With the new hair color she didn't recognize him right away, but she was sure it was one of Alaska's brother's friends.

"Does she know that?" Izzy asked, raising her eyebrow.

"Probably not," He chuckled. "It's not my fault but Hyunjin's, don't look at me like that, Izzy." Seungmin said, turning his head to face Laska. "Just make the order so Changbin doesn't beat me up, please?" Izzy shook her head, turning around to prepare the drinks.

"Tell Hyunjin to at least go and say hi to Alaska if she is paying for you," Izzy commanded, making the male leave to his group that was still waiting outside. She sighed, realizing she might end up being the one paying for their drinks too.

"Hey," Hyunjin came inside of the café, his friends all following him, going to sit at a table next to Alaska's group.

"What are you doing here?" Laska asked, her smile slowly fading away. Riley on the other hand found this situation funny, giggling when she saw him. It felt as if she summoned him by saying Laska should bring him to hang out with them soon.

"Getting a coffee," Hyunjin answered right away, walking to Izzy to take their orders. "Thank you..."

"Isabella, you could have remembered my name," Izzy added when she saw him struggling with her name, or at least that's what she thought it was.

"Right, sorry," He laughed quietly. It was more of an embarrassed laugh than a derisive laughter. "Izzy," he mumbled with a slight smile and Izzy gave him first two lattes. She could have given him all and watch him struggle taking it, but when she remembered what Laska said earlier, she felt sorry for him. Maybe she would have even helped him with them if she had known she was the only reason why he still hadn't gotten any messages from his soulmate.

As Hyunjin took the last two drinks, thinking they would just go, Hana came back with the cake, which made all of them want to stay.

"There isn't that much," Robin argued right away, Tessa agreeing with her.

"They don't deserve a cake anyway. They wouldn't give us a single piece if they had one." Laska commented. "Just go home."

"She is right," Hyunjin started, turning to Laska. "For once." he scoffed. "Let's just go."

"We can buy a cake on the way," Chan offered, agreeing with Hyunjin that they should go when they have their drinks.

"I agree, I wanna go back so I can write to her, we promised we'll text this afternoon. She wants to tell me about some new game she's been playing. Something about suits," Jeongin smiled, thinking about his soulmate.

Izzy noticed Amy's eyes widened when he said that, trying so hard to not turn around. She figured out the same thing Amy just did. Izzy already knew all about the new game Amy has been playing, and she also knew she wanted to talk to her soulmate about it today. Isabel turned her head to Jeongin, seeing him smile like a little kid and smiled too. He might be a good choice for Amy.

"Fine, fine," Han muttered, standing up. "Don't talk about her much so Hyunjin doesn't get jealous though," he laughed, making Hyunjin give him one dead stare. Riley, however, chuckled.

"Just go outside," Hyunjin mumbled, making all of them go out. "Thanks for the coffee, Laska," He waved at her, walking out too. Laska just mumbled something under her breath and Izzy chuckled, sitting to her friends.

"Now, let's finally cut the cake," Astran chuckled, making more space for Izzy so she could do so.

"Hana you should sing happy birthday," Amy commented with a smile. Not a very family-friendly smile, but more of 'you took my shirt I am gonna make your life hell' smile.

"Shut up," Hana muttered.

"Let her breath," Riley laughed, already eating her piece.

"Guys, there's only like half a minute left," Tessa commented to stop the possible chaos. Even though some people might say chaos was her middle name, she knew damn well how much Izzy wouldn't like this.

"Oh god, it better be someone cute," Amy commented.

"Don't worry about that," Izzy laughed, already taking a pen to her hand. She wasn't going to miss a second. Her phone rang, letting her know she is officially nineteen and a small star started to show up on her left arm, making her smile. "A star?" She asked, writing a Hi on her arm.
