❧ stepping out of your car in a hurry, you closed the door with your hip and jogged to the entrance of the coffee shop where you were supposed to meet eren. whatever reaction you'd be receiving from eren would most likely affect your friendship with him and you felt it in your gut, he wasn't gonna hesitate to tell you how he feels.
the bell of the coffee shop rung after you stepped in the shop, your shoulders slumped as you watched eren and guapo seated together whilst working on eren's laptop. you could hear their small side conversation of guapo's feedback, eren softly giggling at almost everything she said.
guapo teared her eyes away from eren's face, her broad smile slowly fading after seeing you standing at the door. your smile was thin, nodding at her and waving at her awkwardly.
"what's wrong? you don't like this picture either?" you hear eren whispering to guapo after he noticed how quickly her smile flickered out like a flame on a candle. guapo shook her head to deny her dislike for eren's picture, she did like it.
"um she's here," she pointed at your direction and watched eren furrow his eyebrows. he slowly looked over his shoulder to find you standing at the door with your hands behind your back. he quickly looked away from you and stared back at his laptop, pretending that you weren't even there.
"eren," you said his name softly, slowly walking up to the booth seats he sat at. he didn't reply, just kept his gaze on his screen. he didn't want to see you at the moment, he had every right to be upset for you not showing up knowing how important your help on his project was needed.
"i'm busy right now," he said with a monotone voice. your heart sank at the sudden switch of his emotions just by seeing you. just a second ago he was smiling and laughing, now he turned cold.
"eren, i'm sorry. i just lost track of ti-"
he raised a finger in the air to hush you before glancing at you with disappointment clouding his eyes, "there's really no excuse for why you stood me up y/n. you knew how much i needed you for this project yet you still didn't show up."
he paused his talking before continuing, "i get it, you were dropping something off for a friend...but if you wanted to hang back with him, there was plenty of time in the world to do that. not when you're best friend needed your help."
you gulped down all your regrets, realizing all of eren's points. he was right, you did have all the time in the world to spend time with armin. but at the moment wasn't the right time to do so. you parted your mouth to say something but nothing came out which made eren's upper lip twitch.
"i think i should...get back to my shift," guapo mumbled and began to scoot to the end of the seat but was stopped by eren's leg that brushed against hers, the look he gave her was pleading for her to stay. guapo rubbed her lips together and scooted back to her previous seating, clearly not having the time to get herself in anyone's business.
"i wish i could make it up for you eren, i rlly do. but-" you were beginning to say but quickly caught yourself after eren looked back at you, his cold facial expression made your heart sink to your stomach. what he said next made you feel even more worse.
"but? y/n, oh you've got to be kidding me," he let out a sardonic laugh, his face burying in his hands before rubbing his eyes with the heel of his palms and shaking his head, "but what? his seashells were more important? don't think that i don't know, he does this seashell bullshit with every girl he gets with. you don't even know him y/n!?"
"i just had a chance to get to know him, okay? and i just took that opportunity..." you mumbled with your eyes shifting down to your shoes. eren blinked at your answer, looked at guapo who was picking at her nails.
"so that just proves my point about you knowing that you needed to be here. it's cool though, you'll have plenty of chances to get to know armin more," he shrugged and pulled his laptop closer to him to close it, grabbing his laptop case to shove it inside.
"oh my gosh eren, please," you felt another lump of guiltiness crawl up your throat as you watched eren hold his laptop case by his hip. eren's heart was racing, feeling it beat harshly against his chest as he avoided your eye contact. he was filled with disappointment of course, but he cared so much for you.
"i won't be in your way to getting to know your future boyfriend anymore, okay?" he said too calmly, taking a deep breath and retracing the things he said to you. he was only upset and him thinking you'd see him differently made him feel so distressed. eren stood up from his seat and gave you one last hard look, reading your eyes that you were at fault.
"i'm out g," eren teared his eyes away from you slowly and waved at guapo before leaving the coffee shop. your hands dropped by your sides as you stared at the seat he sat in. guapo pressed her lips together and got out of her seat to get back to her shift to leave you at such high guilt.
you turned on your heel to leave the coffee shop with your heart sinking with gloominess. eren was no where in sight, he had already left the parking lot and the area as a whole. you walked with your head down to your car, the walk of shame as iris would put it as.
you felt your body sinking in your seat once you stepped inside your car. your fingers clenching the steering wheel as you looked ahead at the window shield to stare off blankly into the distance. you couldn't call eren because you were sure he wouldn't even bother picking up the phone, so you ended up calling iris.
one single ring was enough for iris to pick up the call in less than a minute, she was urgent with it. muffled noises were heard from the other end of the call as if iris was trying to fix her seating position, the sound of her hoop earring hitting against the microphone before she spoke.
"yo!" iris said, sounding energy-filled. you pressed your lips together as you kept your phone close to your ears, no words coming out of your mouth after she spoke. she noticed how you weren't responding back, she thought the connection cut off for a second, "hello? girl, you there?"
your lashes fluttered as you blinked, hoisting your body up as you turned on the ignition, "yeah..yeah i'm here," you cleared your throat softly and traced the lining of your top lip with your hand still clenching the steering of your car that was still on parked.
"you good? you sound like you jus-"
"iris, i think messed up..." you groaned quietly with a tilt of your head. you pressed the back of your head against the head rest of your chair, pinching the bridge of your nose as you exhaled a deep sigh.
"you think you messed up, with who? armin?" you shook your head without any words leaving your lips and mentally face palmed yourself when you realized iris wasn't here physically with you to see you shake your head to have no as your answer.
"no, with eren," you responded, you could here the sound of iris humming on the other line. you didn't have to see her to know she had one leg crossed over the other, her elbow propped on her knee and her chin resting on her hand. she was ready to listen and understand what you could've done wrong.
silence lingered between the two of you, giving her time to think of what to say, "girl what the hell did you do? not show up to the coffee shop?" she blurted. you remembered informing iris that eren needed you to meet up with him at the coffee shop, so her making that inference wasn't much of a surprise to you.
you lowered your voice a bit while looking down at your nails to glance at them as you spoke, "well...i just lost track of time and-"
your sentence was interrupted by iris continuously humming in disapproval. you didn't have to finish your explanation, iris already knew what you did just by hearing the words "lost track of time". it was the same thing her 'date' said before standing her up too.
"what was intervening with your plan...to meet up with eren, y/n?" iris was getting serious now, this wasn't something that you would do especially when it came to eren. it wasn't like you to just not show up when you were needed at best.
"armin forgot his folder and i thought i would have enough time to drop it off at his apartment, okay? he really needed it. i ended up staying a bit longer iris," your words were tumbling out of your mouth so fast, iris couldn't even keep up with some of them.
"are you serious right now? y/n, you got all the time in the world to see armin. he ain't all that for you to forget about your original plans?" you knew she was right, but something inside of you wanted to disagree, to defend yourself and him.
you cocked your head to the side and pressed your lips together, letting iris finish speaking, "i know iris but the chance was just there."
"y/n, c'mon girl?" her voice pitched up, almost making it squeak. her hands were out in front of her being waved around stiffly while squinting her eyes at what you said.
"what?" you said in a questioning tone, "iris, you always told me when i was around armin, if there was a chance then just take it." you said defensively. iris began to grow confuse on the switch of your tone which went stern, also giving her the go to start laughing hysterically at what you just said.
"girl, ain't nothing wrong with taking the chance with armin if it's right there but you had plans? " you could hear her laughing dying down. her laughs in situations like these weren't always the amusing ones. it was more the disbeliefs ones.
you stayed quiet and that gave iris the sign that she proved you wrong. she stayed silent too, the only thing you could hear on the other line was jayce singing aloud to the music that was playing on their tv. finally iris opened her mouth to break the silence.
"girl you're blinded. armin gotcho ass under this spell or something cause-"
"no i'm not," you interrupted her sternly, "he's treating me right, he's a good person to me iris and we both know that was something hard for me to find in someone. i was afraid of what would happen if i turned him down."
"but you weren't afraid of how eren would feel if you didn't show up? oh okay." her words hit your heart like a dagger. it was truth words, but she wasn't done talking. the things you said must've hit her harder, "no because was armin aware that you needed to see eren? armin could've waited for you unless he ain't know what it's like being a good friend."
"h-he is a good friend, you don't know him!" you sat up in your chair so quick at her words, your heart almost beating out of your chest from how hard it was beating, "it's just armin okay? like i said i didn't want.." your voice began to fade after you heard iris kissing her teeth.
"girl you don't know him either. if armin was a good friend he would've acknowledged the traits of being one such as not standing up someone. he needa understand that not everything needs to be about him."
you nibbled on your bottom lip as you shifted the car away from park to start exiting the parking lot of the coffee shop. you stayed silent once again, iris only hearing the sound of your car being driven. iris began to mumble under her breath, some words you weren't able to catch.
"i know you ain't ignoring me nie," iris blurts out, her sass escaping her tone. you clenched your jaw to avoid saying anything else which made iris even more upset besides you completely dismissing what she said by your silence, "this ain't like you y/n. ever since you've been around armin, i've peeped. don't think i haven't noticed."
silence again.
"aight keep ignoring me, like i give a fuck," iris kept going and going, but still couldn't get a word out of you. she scoffed softly, what she said next almost made your eye twitch, "i'm starting to see that he's built off red flags. the failed relationships, the lack of traits of being a good friend. girl open yo damn eyes."
"bye iris," your voice was blunt and monotone, you sounded tired of hearing iris talk and talk. you telling her bye caught her off, again you were trying to dismiss her and she wasn't rocking with that.
"bye!? i'm tryin' to help you, the fuck you mean bye!? jayce you hearin' this shit? y/n telling me bye 'cause i'm spittin' facts on ha dome right now," iris' voice was beginning to rise, almost having her rasp out as she yelled.
"y/n we both know once you hang up, you done cut me off right? you deadass cuttin' me off over a man?" you knew she was waving her finger out in front of her as she held her phone close to her lips to shout at the phone. you flared your nostrils as you breathed out, gulping down the lump that was creeping up your throat.
"i guess i am," your voice cracked at the words that escaped your lips. as you moved your phone away from your ear, all you can hear is shouts that came from iris who was beginning to go off, jayce in the back trying to calm her down.
pressing the red button was the last contact you made with iris. you just never knew those last words you said to her would be words you'll forever regret saying to her.
VANISH....
