chapter twenty five
Three years later
His phone rang as it made him jump, he grabbed his phone and without answering it clicked the green arrow to accept the call. "Hey, we're about to leave and someone wants to say bye to Daddy." The person on the other line said as it clicked in Brian's head.
"On my way," Brian says flatly as Mia knew that's not how he wanted it to come out, as she knew that when she would start to get Jack ready in the morning that Brian would be going doing his own daily patrols of Los Angeles to find something about Britney. Every day it's the same. Nothing.
Brian got to the house just as Mia, and Dom was walking out of the house with Letty beside him as Mia has Jack's backpack for school, and the moment that Jack had saw Brian get out of the car, he ran right towards him. Brian had a smile on his face as Mia knew that it was a tired fake smile but Jack bought it either way.
"Daddy!" Jack screamed of pure happiness as he doesn't know that he has a sister, as for three years Brian and Mia hadn't mentioned the eldest O'Conner child. There has been countless times where Brian would think about telling Jack that he has an older sister but he doesn't want him to get all excited then break his heart by saying that she is missing. So if and when they get Britney back there's going to be a family reunion.
"Hey bud, ready for your second day at preschool?" Brian asked Jack as he kissed the side of his face as Mia just smiled at seeing Brian with Jack. As she just saw Britney instead of Jack as it made her eyes suddenly water with tears, at the girl.
Mia misses Britney just as much as Brian does, even Dom and Letty miss Britney just as much as Brian does, if not more. They saw her grow up from a five year old and then years later she's a teenager.
"Yeah, I am!" Jack yells again as Brian spin his son around in circles as he would often to that to Britney when she was little. He often does things with Jack that he used to do with Britney.
"We miss her too." Letty says seeing the tears welling up in Mia's brown eyes, as she turned her head to look away, as she cleared her throat.
Just then a car parked in front of Brian's car that he drive earlier, as a man walked out of the car as it was Joe.
"Morning, Toretto's and O'Conner's?" Joe says as he knows about Britney being missing after three years, as they have all missed three years of Britney's life.
"Morning." Mia says with a sad smile as Joe nodded his head at the brunette woman.
"Say bye to Uncle Dom and Aunt Letty." Brian says as Jack nods his head before running up the stairs as Letty was the first one to get down to Jack's level and gave him a hug, as Dom did the same when it was his turn.
"Bye Uncle Dom, and Auntie Letty." Jack says as Letty got to Jack's level and kissed his head.
"Have fun, kid." Letty says to Jack with a smile as Dom pulled away from the embrace, Jack waved at his aunt and uncle.
"What am I, Brian chopped liver?" Joe says from his spot where he stood, as Jack ran towards Joe and hugged his leg, as Joe quickly gave him a hug before handing him back to Brian.
"Parking brake slid up to the school?" Brian asked Jack as they walked towards the van referring how they would arrive at school, as Brian always liked to show up with style.
"Where's mommy?" Jack asked looking around for her.
"She's coming, don't worry, buddy. She's talking to Uncle Dom and Aunt Letty." Brian replied glancing over his shoulder to see that Mia was still talking to Dom and Letty. Brian opened the door of the minivan and set Jack in his chair.
"Who would've thought..." Mia mumbled to herself smiling at the sight of Brian putting Jack in their brand new minivan. Never in her entire time of knowing Brian would she see the day where Brian drove a minivan. Mia looked behind her and saw a large package on the porch behind her. "Hey, before you leave Dom! You have a package, it says it's from Tokyo, it's probably something from Han." Mia says as she wonders how Han is holding up, as Brian said that he had gone back to Tokyo after Gisele passed (his girlfriend).
"Tokyo?" Letty asked, as she intertwined her hand with Dom's as he smiled at her before turning back to his sister. He looked down at the large box with a smile on his face.
"What's Han tryin' to do, convert me over to a Turbo Charger?" Dom joked as Mia and Letty chuckled as that would never happen.
"Hey, buddy, car's don't fly!" Brian told Jack after he had thrown his toy car. Brian bent over and grabbed the red car, and handed it back to Jack.
"Hey, car's don't fly!" Jack repeated, giggling. The sound of his laugh caught Mia's attention, she smiled as she looked at her two boys.
"Brian in a minivan...things have changed." Dom said with a chuckle as Mia smirked at his words.
"Never thought I'd see that." Letty adds as Dom nods his head as he kissed the side of Letty's head.
"I think he's struggling, Dom. Outside of Britney. He doesn't want me to see it, but the white picket fence is like an anchor to him. I can feel it. I tried to talk to him the other night and you know what he told me? It's not the girls he missed, it's not the cars...it's the bullets. He said he missed the bullets." Mia said shaking her head, as she slowly walked down the stairs of the porch, as Dom and Letty followed her. She stopped in her tracks and Dom and Letty turned to look at her. "I just...can you believe that, Dom? The bullets?"
"Let him settle in, give him time." Dom told her. "He's an adrenaline junkie like the rest of us. That's one of the reasons he fit in so well. Just give him some more time."
Mia nodded her head as she hugged her brother and Letty took a step away letting the two siblings have their moment. Moments later, Mia was the one who broke the hug, as Dom kissed her forehead. "See you later." Mia turned around as she started to walk towards the minivan.
Dom's phone rang in his pocket. He reached in and grabbed it. The call was coming from Tokyo. "Hello?" Dom answered, as he waited to hear Han's voice on the other end of the line.
"Dominic Toretto." A man with an English accent spoke. "You don't know me...but you're about to." The man said as panic hit Dom like a freight train. He remembered Mia telling him about the package from Tokyo on the porch. He listened closely and heard a faint ticking sound. Letty also heard the ticking sound also, as they both realized that the package was a bomb.
"GET DOWN!" Dom and Letty shout loudly. Mia whipped around confused as Dom was running towards his sister as Letty ducked and rolled. Dom got to Mia in time before their front porch exploded. Dom reached Mia and wrapped his arms around her tightly to protect her from the blast. Brian quickly closed the van door, attempting to keep Jack safe from whatever was going to happen next.
Just as Dom was about to pull his sister down to the ground with him the bomb in the box exploded. Dom and Mia landed on the sidewalk with a thud. Letty held her head in her hands, as Joe was sent flying as he was closer than he wanted to be to the explosion. The Toretto house exploded, sending debris flying in every direction. Mia covered her head with her arms. She felt her heart pounding in her chest.
When Mia finally lifted her head she saw what used to be her house. There was nothing left besides dirt and rubble. Mia's eyes filled with tears at the sight. So many memories in that home and it was gone in an instant.
Mia's eyes widen as she hurriedly got up. "JACK!" Mia screamed, feeling her stomach drop at the thought of something happening to her son. She tried to run but ended up stumbling a few times, still not fully balanced from the impact of the blast. Brian slid open the van door, and grabbed Jack. There wasn't scratch on him. He held him tightly against his chest, breathing out a sigh of relief knowing that his son was okay.
If only he was there to make sure that Britney was okay, that fateful morning three years ago. Then everything would have been okay, he wouldn't be going through periods of depression, and everytime that his phone rings him thinking that his daughter is the one calling him and telling him that she's okay.
But that hadn't happened as he hadn't lost hope about his daughter coming home. Well what's left of the dirt and rubble.
"Mia, are you okay? Are you hurt?" Brian questioned like he would question Britney when she would get a single scratch on her. He brushed some of her dark hair out of her face, inspecting every inch to make sure there was no injuries.
"I'm good. What about you, you okay?" Mia asked her voice still shaking. She blinked back some tears. Brian nodded and handed Jack to Mia, knowing she needed to hug her son. Mia held Jack, and rubbed his back soothingly. "It's okay, buddy, it's okay. Does anything hurt, baby? Tell Mommy if anything hurts, okay?"
"I'm okay, Mommy." Jack says quietly as he hugged Mia back tightly. Brian leaned over and kissed Mia on the forehead. The two looked over at where Letty fell but she was no longer there, and they then adverted their eyes to Dom and Letty was holding Dom, well Dom was holding Letty. Brian then looked at Joe and he sorta got the worst hit because he was closer to it, but outside of his head bleeding he's fine. Though the car could say otherwise.
The five adults all had one question on their mind.
What the fuck just happened.
------
"Shattered his collar-bone, fractured his leg in three places, he only regained consciousness first thing this morning. The first thing he said was, 'Get me Dom'. He is there." Lindsey explains to Dom as Letty as they walked through the hospital. The day before the Toretto house exploded, her father Luke Hobbs had been attacked by a stranger who put him in the hospital.
"How are your wounds?" Dom asked her as she shrugged her shoulders.
"Oh I was fine as I wasn't there when it happened." Lindsey says to Dom as he nods his head at her. Her father getting attacked and to their house blowing up definitely had to be connected. It's too suspicious. "Oh, when you get the chance, tell Brian I'm sorry about what happened to Britney."
Letty looked over at the girl who mentioned Britney as she suddenly had tears welling up in her eyes at the very mention about the girl. As it still effected her that Britney has been missing for three years. "Thank you, Lindsey." Letty says quietly as she tries to hold in a sob of tears as she knew that Lindsey was genuinely sorry about what happened to Britney.
"He's waiting, let's go." She added walking away leading the couple to her father's room. When they walked in the room, they saw Hobbs sitting on the hospital bed only wearing boxers, which were covered up by the white sheet on his bed. his left arm was in a huge cast, along with one of his legs.
"I've got something for you, Dad." Lindsey says to Hobbs as Dom walked in with Letty following in suit. Hobbs looked away from the television which was playing an episode of the Incredible Hulk and looked over at Dom and Letty. "Your files." Lindsey added, handing her father the black folder that she held in her hands.
"Thank you." Hobbs told his daughter smiling as he took the folder from her hands.
"You risk your life and limb to save the free world and what do they give you? Jell-O and a bad seventies TV show." Dom joked earing a laugh from Lindsey, Hobbs and Letty.
"You know, it's got it's perks. The sponge baths ain't that bad." Hobbs says as he moved his good leg a little so that Lindsey could sit where his foot was.
"Uncle Luke!" Hobbs was cut off, as Letty knitted her eyebrows in confusion when she heard the sound of a little girl. She looked over to where the voice had come from. A little girl had sat in the corner of the room playing on a phone with earbuds that she held in her hands. Letty's jaw nearly dropped.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Sammy." Hobbs apologized as he flashed a smile at the little girl.
"Uncle?" Dom and Letty asked at the same time they shared a look before looking back at Luke.
"That's my cousin Samantha." Lindsey says to the husband and wife with a smile. "Don't let her attitude fool you, because she got it from me."
"I sorta put that picture together." Dom says as Lindsey smile as she knew that he wasn't wrong.
"Sam, we want to introduce you to someone. He's a uh...he's an old friend, and that's his sister. Come say hello." Lindsey says motioning her to get up and she did as she walked over to the two of them, as Mia smiled politely down at the girl.
"Dominic Toretto right?" Samantha asked. "My Uncle said he kicked your ass once." Mia busted out laughing at that. When Dom gave her a look, she cleared her throat to cover up her laugh.
"Samantha Rose, watch your mouth." Luke and Lindsey warn both holding back a laugh. Mia had to force herself to stop laughing.
"Your Uncle's on heavy pain meds, I can understand if his history is a little hazy." Dom replied to the little girl with a small smirk forming on his lips.
"Yeah, I doubt it." Samantha said, only making Mia laugh again, as Samantha looked over at Mia. "You're Mia, right?" Mia smiled and nodded.
"The one and only." Mia replied with a small laugh, as Samantha nodded.
"Alright Sam, that's enough. I want you to go get something to eat with Elena while me, Linz, and these two have a talk." Hobbs instructed, as she nodded as she and Elena led her out of the room. As soon as they were out of earshot, Letty spoke up.
"Who did this?" Letty asked in a now serious tone, folding her arms over her chest as they took a step closer to Hobbs.
"You remember Owen and his son Brett Shaw the two we tore half of London down trying to get? Well, this is Owen's big-bad-brother. Take a look at this." Lindsey explained handing Dom the black folder that she had given her father moments ago.
"Deckard Shaw." Dom says reading the file in his hands.
"A British Special Forces assassin. The kind of unique asset that no one government would ever admit to employ." Lindsey says to the two.
"Black Ops boys." Letty stated as Hobbs shook his head at her.
"Worse, they created a monster. They felt Shaw was necessary evil until eventually they decided he was unnecessary. The Powers That Be felt that he knew just a little too much. The asset become a liability. So, they sent twenty elite operatives to retire him." Lindsey continues to explain. "And they missed him." Dom added.
"That was six years ago and Shaw's been a ghost ever since." Hobbs says. These words sent chills down Letty's spine.
"Until now." Letty stated, as Hobbs looked at her, but directed his attention back over to Dom when he took a step closer to the hospital bed.
"How do we find him?" Letty asked Hobbs with pure venom and hatred lingering in her mouth as Lindsey looked down to her lap as she fiddled with her fingers, before looking up.
"You don't." Lindsey says rather quietly as she was starting to bite her bottom lip as it's a nervous habit.
"He killed Han." Letty replied with the same amount of venom in her voice but at least Han is with Gisele now again, so that's a little bonus but it doesn't feel the same without the two of them as they were both considered family as Dom trusted them. "He almost killed my family."
"He also tried to put my father in a body bag too." Lindsey says quietly once again as Luke spoke up.
"Which is why when I get out, I'm gonna put a herd on him so bad he's gonna wish his momma had kept his legs closed. But until then, my official answer to you is...stand down." Hobbs told them.
"Now you know I can't do that." Dom replied in a low voice as Letty knew he was going to say that, because that's Dom.
"I do know you Dom, which is why now I give you the brother-to-brother answer. You do whatever it is you gotta do. When you find that son of a bitch, just do me one favor." Hobbs says.
"What's that?" Letty asked Hobbs as Dom stayed silent.
"Don't miss."
------
Two days later, Mia and Brian flew back to LA, for Han's funeral. Everyone was so deeply saddened that they lost Han a short time after they did Gisele. A few tears fell from Mia's eyes as the priest continued to talk about the wonderful life that Han lived.
They've all known Han for a couple years now and to them, it's so crazy to say that he's gone. It's surreal to them. Han was the first person to know (sorry Brian) when Letty and Dom welcomed their son Marcus. He called him 'Little M', and it suited for him, as that's mainly what everyone calls Marcus, they sorta forget that the little one has an actual name.
Mia still feels like she's waiting for Han to show up out of the blue, with a bag of chips in his hand and crack a joke that everyone would laugh at. Mia may not have really met Han but she knows him from how everyone talked about him.
More tears slid down Mia and Letty's cheeks. Both blinking back tears as much as they could without messing up their makeup that they spent twenty minutes doing. Letty and Mia both watched as Dom placed a picture of Gisele on top on Han's casket, as the two women smile a sad smile at that.
"I can't do no more funerals." Marilyn says quietly to mainly herself and to no one in particular. The people around her nodded in agreement.
"First Han...now Hobbs is laid up, of all people..." Tej trailed off. "We're being hunted. You know he's out there somewhere watchin', right?" Mia tensed up at the thought of that.
"I hope so. It means he's close." Brian stated, as Mia nodded in agreement again, moving closer to Brian. Brian's grip around Mia's waist tightened a bit noticing how Mia grew tense.
"Just promise me, Brian...no more funerals." Roman says to Brian in a quiet voice, which is something that Mia hasn't heard Roman use before.
"Just one more." Brian paused then looked down at Roman and Mia as a serious expression was on his face. "His."
