CHAPTER FIVE; KILL OR BE KILLED

"SO SUDDENLY, SHE'S ON the running for mother of the year just when I'm trying to avoid her the most," complained the blonde vampire as she dragged her paintbrush up and down the wooden frame of the tent in the park. As she paused for breath, Caroline noticed how only Maya was listening to her. Elena was starring off her mind clearly elsewhere, "I'm babbling, you don't want to hear all this." 

Shaking her head get her mind back on track Elena attempted to maintain, "No, sorry. Then what happened?"

Caroline in turn played along and explained, "Well, I was a bitch but it's part of the process." Noting how Stefan stood only down the hill from them, the blonde wondered, "So, how are things between you and Stefan? Anything?"

The twins shared quick glances before Elena replied, "No, not since the fight. He's been pushing me away because he thinks that Katherine might get jealous enough to hurt me. I just don't know how to change his mind."

Caroline shrugged a little offering her, "You said that Katherine's dangerous. Maybe he's got a point."

"Yeah, I know that she's dangerous and I know that he's just trying to protect me, but it feels like giving up and I just..." Elena trailed off lowering her own paint brush.

"Just what," asked Maya as she continued to stir paint and pretend, she was actually helping.

Filled with seemingly real sadness Elena answered her twin, "I just thought we were stronger than that."

Maya looked down away from the twos conversation not feeling right about thinking the worst in Caroline. The two of them hadn't even spoken about all the things she said. However, if Katherine really was using her girlfriend against her will to find out what Stefan and Damon were up to Maya had to put their problems on pause.

Maya and Caroline watched as the couple sent each other glances from opposite sides of the park. "Oh, oh. Lurking looks are being exchanged," Caroline said with her usual commentary.

"I'm gonna go talk to him," she responded putting down her brush.

Caroline went to stop her putting down her brush as she protested, "No, Elena. I think it's a bad idea."

"Annnnnd she's gone," Maya said dragging on as she continued to paint, and her sister walked away. The only thing she hated more than getting bossed around by Carol was getting yelled about her.

Damon walked over to the girls asking them curiously asking the couple, "What's her problem?"

"Don't worry about it," Maya answered him dismissively. The blonde sent her girlfriend a pointed annoyed by his presence as he stood next to her.

Ignoring Maya, he looked at the blonde in question asking her, "Why are you being such a bitch to your mom?"

"Don't worry about it," Caroline repeated to him harshly walking back over to her friend painting. The Forbes girl pushed her hair behind her ear so she could hear the couple's conversation.

Elena approached her boyfriend cutting right down to the problem asking, "Do you still care about Katherine?"

Stopping what he was doing Stefan stood straight up, "Don't be like this. Please don't turn this into something that it's not."

"So, this is not up for discussion. That's what you're saying," she replied becoming angry with him.

The three watched the couple from a far only two of them being able to hear the conversation. "No, I'm saying that is enough for discussion right now because we have ears on us," the two vampires turned looking away as Elena and Stefan's attention turned towards them.

Not being able to hear what they did, Maya was still looking at them and was caught doing so by them. Maya turned away fumbling with the paint brush dropping it all over her hands. "Smooth," Damon mumbled earning a bitter smile from Maya.

"Oh, why don't you fuck off," spat Maya at the vampire.

Looking away from the group watching them, Elena persisted with her boyfriend, "Okay, when?"

"I don't know," answered Stefan unsure his arms hugging his own body.

"I saw her Stefan. It's like we are the same person. How could you hate her and be in love with me," she went on just wanting her boyfriend to talk to her, to explain everything.

Maya watched from afar as Stefan shook his head, "You're reaching. I'm not... I'm not Damon." Despite knowing what they were doing, it felt strange to watch them fight.

The human girl raised her arm slightly pointing over to the group, "How about we don't bring Damon into this right now?"

Maya could see the bitten back smirk across Damon's face, she could only roll her eyes at him for it. "You know, I can't... I can't do this anymore, Elena," Stefan told his girlfriend tiredly.

Knowing that was the signal they agreed upon this morning Elena paused giving a performance to show Caroline. Back up a little she seemed disgusted with his attitude, "Fine, Stefan. Whatever," she finished walking away not even bothering to return their way.

"Relationships are about communication," Damon mumbled to the girls.

Each girl turned their heads giving him a pointed look before Caroline scoffed walking away to find Elena. Once she was gone and Damon was left starring at a narrowed eyed Maya who asked, "What happened? What'd I miss?"

"Don't worry about it," Damon repeated picking her from earlier.

"You're a dick," Maya told him harshly walking away going to find her friends.

Maya was attempting to find her sister and girlfriend when she saw how close they were standing to Carol Lockwood. That was enough of a reason for Maya to sneak off with her cigarettes and walks into the woods to smoke. She knew it's not good for her but with people constantly trying to rip her throat out with their teeth, she figured something else would kill her before the cigarette ever had a chance. Plus, she had to regularly avoid Caroline knowing she was smoking them, so it didn't leave her with many chances to even do it.

So, without thinking she walked deep enough into the woods no one would catch her. The walk was pleasant until she reached a boulder and was sitting all of three seconds before a voice spoke, "Those will kill you; you know?"

Maya turned her head to the side seeing Mason drawing closer to her. "Aren't my teenage years the years I am supposed to do things that'll kill me," returned the Gilbert doppelganger. 

The older man kept moving closer till his was blocking Maya's way off the boulder. "True," he agreed before he added on, "But people usually mean those cigarettes, drinking, and partying. Not what you do."

Maya blew the smoke out from her lungs and replied, "And what is it that I do that you know so much about, Mason?"

"Just that I bet your parents would've preferred the drinking and partying to, murder, and magic. Or having you hanging out with vampires like Damon and Stefan," the older man bit back. Maya only chuckled at him, "What's so funny?"

"You talk about my parents as if I wasn't an orphan my whole life, and you stood way too close to me," Maya said taking the cigarette that was in her hand and jammed it into the skin near his eye. She was aiming for his eye, but he grabbed her wrist as they stumbled back into a tree. Once he was consumed with pain, Maya sprinted back towards the crowd.

Maya barley made it a few feet before he had grabbed her hair and yanked her back. She swiftly pushed her elbow back landing it firmly in his gut. Yet he still didn't release her, so with all her might Maya threw her body forward forcing him to roll and flip onto the ground. The Gilbert girl crawled back taking the knife she always kept with her on her hip out.

When Mason was coming to his feet, she could see the remains of the ash under his eye. Luckily for him he could heal so it didn't hurt nearly as much as it should've. "I would walk away if I were you," Maya warned.

"Not a chance," returned Mason and before he knew it, Maya was lunging forward at him. She faked slicing her blade at his face and when he moved to block her there, Maya dropped and sliced it across his chest. She used the momentum of it to tuck her body rolling out of his way.

 As soon as she was to her feet again and Maya swung this time Mason had caught her wrist and pulled her into his chest. With her back against him Maya saw as Caroline was rushing to the scene having heard the struggle.

Out of breath and moments behind the vampire, Elena attempted to reach her sister, "Let her go!" Caroline held onto the back of the older twin's arm keeping her still.

Remembering who they were also there for Caroline stalled asking, "Where are they?" The werewolf stepped away from them carefully keeping his arm around Maya's neck.

"You don't need me for that," Mason told them pausing for a moment pointing at the blonde he said, "I'll let your friend here sniff them out." He looked directly at Caroline asking, "Does your mother know what you are? I'll happy to tell her." The vampire angered by his threat went towards him, Maya struggled trying to pull out his grasp, but he just gripped tighter. "Don't be stupid! Necks snap easy around here," he warned the blonde.

"I can take you," Caroline nodded sure of herself.

Holding Maya tightly he asked her, "Wanna bet?"

Caroline nodded her eyes locked with Maya, "Yeah. I do." Before Mason could even register her reply Caroline rushed over to him. Using her speed, she grabbed him pulling his away from Maya knocking her on the ground in her effort to separate them. The Forbes vampire pushed him against a tree, and once he was stuck, she mocked, "Told ya." 

Kicking him in the leg Maya watched from the ground as Caroline threw him on the floor kicking him on the stomach with her vampire strength. The force from the kick sent him flying towards a tree.

From the ground Maya watched grinning from ear to ear as she watched her girlfriend. When Caroline had turned around once again, Maya was up to her feet throwing her arms around her. "Have I have said how much I love you," Maya said with her hands on either side of her face.

"Come on," she told her as the girls took off running to find their friends and get them out of whatever trouble they had gotten themselves into.

The three girls ran through the woods arriving at ruins Caroline led them to. Yet, just before entering Caroline simply stopped. Leaning against the tree grateful to have stopped Maya asked, "What is it? Why'd we stop? Or did you hear me hack my lung up back there and you thought I needed a break?" Caroline didn't answer the girl only listening to the voices underground. They watched as their friend's face became contorted with something they couldn't read. Maya moved forward placing her hand on her shoulder asking once again, "Caroline. Caroline, what is it?"

"My mom. She's killing them," she told them. With out caring about their own safety the girls went to run down the stairs but were stopped by their friend grabbing their arms.

"What?! We have to stop her," Maya rushed out to her girlfriend ripping her arm from her grasp.

Terrified she argued with them grabbing hold of Maya again, "No, I can't. MJ, she's gonna find out about me." Maya looked at her sympathetic with her, but she still yanked her arm from her grasp running into the ruins, "Lena! MJ!

"Let's do this. Each with a stake in the heart, then burn them both," Liz said holding the gun on the brothers. The deputies were about to move in when they all heard the gate creaking.

One of the deputies went to check out and as soon as he opened the door Elena swung hitting him with a giant plank. Maya jumped over him rubbing inside, making her way to the door she saw Stefan's body, "Elena! Maya! What are you doing?"

With out thinking she ran towards him looking at his body seeing bullet holes in his body as she held his face in her hands, "Wake up Stefan, you're gonna be okay."

"You can't kill them. We're not gonna let you," Elena told the sheriff. Suddenly they all heard a noise, one the twins knew well. The sound of a vampire running and the wind moving past them.

A deputy nervously asked, "What was that?"

Liz looked at the twins, "Who else is with you?"

Maya shrugged answering knowingly, "You wouldn't believe us if we told you." Caroline moved around swiftly not being seen, she grabbed one of the deputies biting into his neck.

The other deputy began to shoot at her only hitting the deputy Caroline fed on because she was using him as a shield. She dropped his body rushing at the deputy knocking him out cold.

Caroline leaned in the corner savage before she finally regained control of herself. Stepping out from the shadows with her face in full vampire form she locked eyes with her mother. Letting her face become normal again she said, "Hi mom."

Damon and Stefan were now awake, the elder brother was feeding on one of the deputies. Elena was rubbing Stefan's back as he healed, the younger twin sat on the stone stairs with her girlfriend shielding Caroline from her own mother.

Taking a break from feeding Damon pulled back and moved onto checking on his brother, "You need to drink some deputy blood."

"No. I'm gonna be fine. It's gonna take a little bit longer," he reasoned groaning in pain radiating throughout his entire body.

"Damon's right you know. If it's ever time to break your diet... " Caroline began to speak her mouth still covered with the blood of all the men.

Elena looked back at her friend hissing slightly, "He said he didn't want it, okay?"

Her sister sent her warning stare to back off, while Damon got up from his spot on the ground now fully healed. "This is the most unfortunate situation. Two deputies dead and you," he paused looking at Liz, "What am I gonna do with you?"

"You won't tell anyone, will you," Caroline asked needing her mother to agree with her. Liz only looked at her for a moment before looking away, "Mom? Mom? Please. Look, I know that we don't get along and that you hate me but I'm your daughter and you'll do this for me, right? Mom, please. He will kill you."

Liz looked up at Damon telling him, "Then kill me."

"No!"

With ear filled eyes Liz begged, "I can't take this. Kill me now."

Damon crouched down in front of her, "But you're gonna dry out so painfully." 

The elder vampire grabbed her lifting her off the ground holding her tightly. The blonde let out a cry trying to move forward but Maya blocked her path, "No, no, no, no!"

"Damon, don't," Stefan begged his brother.

Elena looked at the scene in front of her, "Damon, please!"

"Let her go Damon," Maya added on warningly.

Looking back at everyone he said, "Relax guys. No one is killing anybody." Looking back at Liz Damon told her, "You're my friend." His eyes falling on the bodies on the floor he said, "We have to clean this up."

 ❝ salvatore boarding house [ foyer & cellar ] ❞

Maya opened the Salvatore's door seeing her best friend on the other side with a small smile greeting, "Hey, sorry that took forever. I just didn't know how long my mom was gonna be here," she finished walking in.

Closing the door behind her Maya told her, "Damon says it'll take 3 days' tops for the vervain to leave her system. Maybe even sooner."

The couple was walking downstairs when Stefan and Elena joined them. Trying to force an upbeat cheer Caroline asked her fellow vampire, "Hey! You had some bunny in you?"

"Yeah, I'm feeling much better, thank you," he returned before they continued down their path to the cellar.

When they finally reached the last of the steps they could hear Liz, clear as day saying, "Keep Caroline away from me. I don't wanna see her."

"She's your daughter Liz," Damon argued with her.

"Not anymore," Liz responded, "My daughters gone."

Maya's mouth gaped hearing Liz's harsh words about her own daughter. In Caroline's defense, much to the surprise to all that lingered behind the doorway, Damon said to Liz, "You have no idea how wrong you are about that." The blonde placed down the bag rushing away from the scene not being able to hear her mother. Maya quickly pushed around her sister and Stefan rushing to follow Caroline.

The older twin stomped into the room frustratedly grabbing her bag. Looking briefly at the blonde left alone on the couch asking her, "You want me to take you home?"

Caroline tearfully told them, "I can't go home."

"Why not," asked Maya returning from grabbing Caroline the water she desperately needed.

Letting her tears spill she sobbed shaking her head, "Because I'm scared." The twins shared a look before Maya moved to sit in front of her girlfriend.

Handing her the water Maya softly asked, "Why are you scared? Caroline, you can talk to me."

"Katherine's gonna be there and she's gonna want me to tell her everything that happened today. She told me I had to spy on you and report back to her," Caroline explained.

Maya looked back her friend feeling tears form in her eyes knowing her friend had been scared out of her mind for a while now. "We know," began Elena earning wide eyes from Caroline, "And I've been so mad at you. But then, I tried to put myself in your position so that I could understand why you would do this to me and to Stefan because he's been such a friend to you."

Cutting off her sister Maya asked, "Who did she threaten?"

"You, she threatened you, Maya and I'm so scared of her Elena! I am so scared of her even if you're not. Even if you think you can take her, she is still so much stronger than you. "Why is she doing this? What does she want," she asked her friends.

The older Gilbert wished she had an answer, but nothing came of it, "That's the million-dollar question."

Maya grabbed her girlfriend pulling her into a hug as the blonde leaned her head into her chest. Looking at her sister Maya angrily warned her, "I'm going to kill that bitch.
