NINA LAKE-MILLER had always wished she was born before the world ended, based on the stories her dad would tell her about amusement parks, birthday cakes, bookstores, flying in an airplane— and much more, it seemed amazing. But, of course, she was born 11 years after the end of the normal world.

April 13, 2014– the day Nina Lake-Miller entered the world, also the day Elaine Lake left it. The hospital in the QZ had been understaffed that day, with only one nurse available to deliver Nina, there were several complications, resulting in Elaine dying just an hour after she met her daughter.

Afterwards, Joel Miller had no choice but to raise his daughter all on his own— which was terrifying for him; it reminded him of Sarah— raising her all alone, just for her to die such a horrible death. He wasn't sure if he'd ever be ready to raise a kid again, especially in such a dangerous world.
