Maybe

A/N: this is based off of the song 'Maybe' from Annie

Lola sat down by the window closest to her bed, sighing to herself. She's never met her parents before, she only knew that her parents had left her at the orphanage when she was only a couple months old.

Lola didn't look up from the window, the other orphans were getting ready for bed.

"Lola...c'mon it's almost bedtime" Lola's friend Sophia said, tapping her shoulder. Lola looked over and shook her head,

"Are you thinking about your parents again?" Sophia asked softly, sitting next to her.

{Maybe far away, or maybe real nearby. He maybe pouring her coffee, she maybe straightening his tie.}

Toni smiled to herself as she looked up to see her husband refilling her cup. She turned back to the cloth she was sewing.

"Thanks..." she smiled, he tilted her chin up and pecked her lips.

"Oh- Pea your tie..." she muttered, adjusting it slightly. He had just come back from his second job interview, and had taken the rest of the day off at Toni's request.

"Thank you.." he smiled, walking back over to the kitchen.

{Maybe in a house, all hidden by a hill}

He walked over and looked outside their front window. Their gray/light blue car parked a little off parallel to their house, Sweetpea always parked the car wrong.

Their house was a victorian like house that was a light gray and white, a little baby blue mixed in too. It was a little small but enough to have a family.

Toni looked down to the piece of cloth she was sewing and set it down on the dining table.

{She's sitting playing piano, he's sitting paying a bill}

He snapped back to reality when he heard Toni playing the piano in the living room. She was playing the song she's learned since she was five, it was a more melodic version of twinkle twinkle.

"Do you think she'll wanna learn how to play piano too?" Toni asked loudly, not looking up or stopping herself from continuing the song. Sweetpea glanced over to her before picking up an envelope and sitting down.

"I'm sure she'll love it..." he muttered, tearing open the envelope and reading it. Toni stopped and looked over to Sweetpea's worried expression.

"What is it love?" She asked lightly, walking over and leaning over his shoulder. Sweetpea looked up behind him at Toni and sighed.

"Another bill..." he muttered, rubbing his face with his hands. Sweetpea had gotten his paycheck for his first job a couple days ago, and he already had to spend it to pay for their electric.

Toni frowned, "It'll be okay...everything's almost ready for her bedroom anyways." She tried to reassure him, it didn't really work though.

{Betcha they're young, betcha they're smart}

Toni and Sweetpea looked at each other in distress. They were married young, and while Toni was pregnant with their first and only child, they were very financially unstable and even homeless for a while. When Toni had their baby, they both knew they weren't enough.

"We bounced back before...we can do this.." He said, swallowing thickly. Sometimes he thought his words of encouragement would reassure Toni more but deep down he really just said them to reassure himself.

"I know...I just don't know if it'll cover food for the three of us this week? How much do little girls eat?" She asked, putting her face in her hands.

"Shop lightly until I land this second job okay? Everything will be fine." He said, standing up to give her a hug. Toni went back to the piano to play a little longer, Sweetpea sat down and started to read the paper, lighting a cigarette.

{Bet they collect things like ashtrays and art}

Toni stood up from the piano, informing Sweetpea that she had found another piece of art to embellish their house with.

"Another?" Sweetpea asked, pulling the now lit cigarette out of his mouth and placing it in one of his ash trays. Toni smiled and held up a painting of a field of flowers.

"It'll go perfect in her room!" She said happily, quickly walking away to go hang it out. Sweetpea smiled to himself as he continued to read the paper, forgetting all about the bill sitting on the table.

{Betcha they're good, why shouldn't they be?}

"Sweets!" Toni shouted from the small girl's room they were preparing.

"Coming!" He shouted back, getting up and walking down the hallway into the yellow room.

"I need help hanging this..." she laughed, Sweetpea held it up straight and knocked the nail into place, straightening the painting out perfectly. Toni stepped back and stared at it, tears pricked her eyes.

{Their one mistake was giving up me...}

Sweetpea stepped back next to Toni and noticed Toni was crying. He wrapped his arms around her gently.

"What if sh-she never forgive us for what we did?" She cried into his chest.

"Hey- Toni remember, we weren't okay back then. But we are now. She'll understand I promise."

Toni pulled away looked up at him, her eyes a little red and puffy.

{So maybe now it's time, and maybe when I wake}

"What if she hates it here...what if she prefers that orphanage..." she sobbed. Sweetpea frowned at her and kissed her forehead. He got down on his knees,

"Toni. That little girl is so lucky to have you as a mother, she's gonna love it here. I promise." He said softly, holding both of Toni's hands. Toni scoffed as a smile escaped her lips.

{They'll be there calling me baby, maybe}

"I can't wait to meet our baby..." she said, smiling as he wiped her tears away. They both returned to the living room, Toni picked up her piece of cloth and her needle again, sitting on the couch.

{Betcha he reads, betcha she sews, maybe she's made me a closet of clothes}

Sweetpea returned to reading his newspaper as Toni began finishing her project.

"Sweets look..." she said, holding up a a circle of knitted cloth. Sweetpea furrowed his brow playfully.

"What is that?" He joked, Toni cracked a smile,

"It's a hair band! To go with one of her outfits!" She laughed. Sweetpea smiled at her as she got up and returned to the yellow room, placing the hair band in the closet.

{Maybe they're strict, as straight as a line. Don't really care as long as they're mine}

Toni returned to the room with a huge smile on her face.

"I'm so excited, she's gonna be so smart, and get so many good grades!" She twirled, letting her arms open out and her head tilted towards the ceiling.

"She better not be anything like I was..." Sweetpea joked. Toni laughed even harder as she stumbled around making herself a little dizzy.

"She will most certainly not be like you!" She smiled at him.

{So maybe now this prayer's, the last one of its kind.}

Toni sat down on the couch and folded her hands, causing Sweetpea to look up at her. Toni only got religious when something really big was happening, like the time when her mother was in the hospital and that she'd struggled to find ways to earn money, or when her father passed and she had to pay for the service.

She whispered into her hands, trembling a little. When she was finished, she covered her face with her hands. Sweetpea put down his paper and sighed, walking over to her. He got down to her level,

"Love," he sighed, pulling her hands away from her face, "Lola is gonna be so happy. Okay? I'll do everything I can to earn some extra money. Maybe I'll buy some wood and make her a playhouse for the backyard." He chuckled, Toni kissed him softly.

{Won't you please come get your baby?}

"Can we go get our baby?" She asked, wrapping her hands around his neck. He smiled and picked her up, carrying her out to the car.

"Let's go get our baby." He smiled happily, putting Toni into the passenger seat and himself into the driver's. He started the engine and the couple began their journey to reunite their family.

{Won't you please come get your baby?}

Toni and Sweetpea locked hands as they entered the small orphanage on the Main Street.

"Hi! You must be here to adopt Lola again!" The receptionist grinned. Toni nodded as she felt a wave of tears flow through her body. Sweetpea gripped her hand tighter as the nice lady said she'd be back with their little girl.

Lola and her friends peeked out from their bedroom doors, seeing the tall and tiny figures standing behind the desk. Lola and the girls rushed back to their beds before Ms. Avery walked in.

"Lola, honey, I have exciting news." Ms. Avery smiled. Lola scrunched up her face,

"What?" She asked, flashing her toothy grin.

"You're birth parents are ready to adopt you..."

Lola stared at Ms. Avery until Sophia nudged her slightly. Lola beamed,

"Those people-" she started, Ms. Avery cut her off with a nod and followed Lola's fast pace into the lobby. Meeting face to face with her parents.

"I thought you didn't want me!" Lola cried, running into Sweetpea and Toni's arms. Toni started to sob as Sweetpea hugged his two girls tightly.

"We'll explain everything, but right now we would like you to come home." He whispered to the small girl. Lola started to cry and eventually nodded her head in response.

{Maybe}
