Wonka led them to a room full of squirrels, and he explained what they do and what the room is for. After he explains the purpose of the squirrels and the room, Veruca turns towards her father. "Daddy, I want a squirrel. Get me one of those squirrels."
"Veruca, dear, you already have many marvellous pets." He replied.
Veruca listed all of her pets as if there wasn't enough. She then ended with an aggressive command. "I want a squirrel! "
"Alright, Daddy will get you a squirrel as soon as he can." He confirmed, nodding at her.
"But I don't want any old squirrel! I want a trained squirrel!" She stomped her foot on the ground, and crossed her arms.
"Oh boy. . " Luella said quietly as she rolled her eyes, Wonka looked over at her and started to. . almost stare at her. Wonka was quickly snapped out of his daze by Mr. Salt asking him:
"Mr. Wonka, how much do you want for one of those squirrels? Name your price."
"Oh, these squirrels are not for sale." Wonka's eyebrows rose up a he leaned onto his cane. "She can't have one."
Veruce gives her father a look of death as she says, "Daddy. . "
Wonka did a spot on impression of her father, "I'm sorry, darling, Mr. Wonka's being unreasonable."
Luella chuckled a bit, despite her awkward uncomfortableness. "Charlie," she whispered, grabbing the little boy's attention. "I don't think this is gonna end well for Veruca. . "
"I'm starting to think that too, Lue." He whispered back.
"If you won't get me a squirrel, I'll get one myself." She scowled, and climbed under the gate of the stairs towards a squirrel.
"Veruca!" Her father called out after her, but she didn't listen.
"Little girl- don't touch that squirrel's nuts! He'll go crazy!" Wonka demanded, Luella's eyes widened and she shook her head. She took that whole sentence the wrong way.
Veruca reaches for a squirrel, "I'll have you." She says confidently. Instead of the squirrel cooperating with her, it jumps up upon her face. The other squirrels follow until she is down on the ground.
"What are they doing?!" Mr. Salt asks, furrowing his eyebrows.
Wonka is busy looking through a large rack of keys. He replies to Mr. Salt, "They're checking to see if she's a bad nut! Turns out she is!" He grins.
The squirrels started taking her to the garbage chute, she cries for help. This alone made Luella's stomach churn. She hated squirrels, and the sad thing is that she feared that this would happen to her if she ever went near a squirrel.
"Where are they taking her?!" Mr. Salt, demanded to know, he was fully concerned for his daughter at this point.
"The garbage chute!" Wonka replied once more, "It goes down to the incinerator! But dont worry, we only light it on Tuesdays."
"Today is Tuesday." Mike looked up at Wonka's who's face fell to an serious expression.
"Well. . there's a chance that they decided not to light it today. . " He trailed off and shrugged a bit.
The squirrels push her down the chute, and she screams in horror. Luella, who is very much panicking at this point, mutters something underneath her breath and pushes past Mr. Salt and Wonka, keeping her head down. She opens the door to the room and leaves.
"I forgot to mention. ." Charlie spoke up, "She's afraid of squirrels. . "
"Well why didn't you say so? I would've very much avoided this room if you told me!" Mr. Wonka exclaimed. "Anyway, she may be stuck in the chute somewhere near the top. If that's the case, all you gotta do is reach in and pull her out!" Wonka puts the key into the lock and opens it to let Mr. Salt through.
The Oompa Loompas come out once again, and start singing another song. Wonka danced along, but was really concerned for Luella's wellbeing. When Mr. Salt got near the hole of the incinerator, the Oompa Loompas kicked him down into the hole, and the song end. Another Oompa Loompa whispers into Wonka's ear, he grins.
"Good news everyone! I've just been informed that the incinerator is broken and that there should be at least three weeks of garbage to shield their fall!"
"Really? That's great news." Mr. Teevee beamed, Wonka turned towards Charlie.
"Can you go get Luella and tell her it's time to move on to the next room?" Charlie nodded and went out to go get her.
After a few minutes, Charlie arrived hand in hand with Luella, who reluctantly walked through the room. Her eyes were closed. "Where's Mr. Salt?"
"He got kicked down the garbage chute, now let's go." Wonka said almost casually, and they made their way over to the Great Glass Elevator, an elevator made of all glass.
He pushes a button and the door opens, they all step in. "Why haven't I thought of this before? The elevator is by far the most efficient way of getting around the factory."
Luella shrugged in response, "All I know is that I don't ever want to see that many squirrels ever again." She shuddered, "Nightmare fuel."
Charlie giggled, and Wonka smiled at her. There couldn't possibly be a way he was in his feelings? No, he hasn't had actual human interaction in years. . it's impossible.
Mike looks at all the buttons and shake his head in disbelief, "There can't possibly be that many floors. ."
"How do you know, Mr. Smarty Pants?" Wonka retaliated sarcastically. "And this isn't just your ordinary up and down elevator, by the way. It can go sideways, slantways, longways, and any other ways you can think of! You just push any button, and whoosh! You're off!"
He pressed a series of buttons, and they had gone by several different rooms. When they got to one specific room, Mike spoke. "Why is everything here completely pointless?"
Wonka sent a a glare towards him, Luella's eyebrows furrowed as she mouthed a "what?".
"Candy doesn't have to have a point! That's why it's candy." Charlie replied, making Wonka smile. Luella was proud of Charlie for saying something like that.
"It's stupid!" Mike said, "Candy is a waste of time!"
Wonka started to space out again as he flashed-back to a time where he was a child once more. He shakes his head as he is taken back to reality. "Another flashback?" Luella asked softly, raising an eyebrow at him. He looks over at her intentionally.
"Hm? Oh, yeah. . " He nodded and looked back at the ground. "Sorry. . "
"It's alright, I understand." She grinned.
"I wanna pick a room!" Mike exclaimed.
Wonka looked over at Mike, and smiled. . it wasn't a genuine smile. "Go ahead."
Mike pushed a button entitled: "The Television Room." and within a few minutes, they were there in that room. The elevator opened, and they stepped out of it.
"Here, put these on." Wonka said as he grabbed 5 pairs of huge sunglasses. He handed them to the guardians and the children. "The lights in here can burn your eyeballs right out of your skulls. And we wouldn't want that, would we?"
When they walked down the steps to a large table in the middle of the room, Wonka spoke again, "This is the testing room for my latest and greatest invention, television chocolate! One day it occurred to me- hey! If television can break up a picture into a million tiny little pieces and send them whizzing through the air, why can't I do the same thing with chocolate? Why can't I send a real chocolate bar through the air and to the television, ready to be eaten?"
"Those are great questions. ." Luella complimented, earning a small thank you from Wonka, "Have you answered those questions yet?"
"Yes." He nodded.
"Sounds impossible." Mr. Teevee said, pushing his glasses up onto the bridge of his nose.
"It is impossible!" Mike exclaimed, and started listing down the two main points as to why it seemed nearly impossible--and unreasonable--to try and send a chocolate bar to a television.
At this point, Luella was irritated, and looked around to find something else to distract her hearing. She saw an Oompa Loompa go through clips of Oprah Winfrey and the Spice Girls, even a Space Odyssey movie.
"Mumbler!" Wonka snapped at him, causing Luella to whip her head over to Wonka. "Seriously-I can't understand a single word you are saying. Okie-dokie. I will now send a chocolate bar from one end of the room, to the other! But through television!" He called out, and a series of Oompa Loompas brought in a huge oversized chocolate bar. Luella's eyes widened.
"It's gotta be real big, 'cause you know how you can film a regular sized man but he comes out this tall?" He demonstrates a small measurement with his fingers and shrugs. "Same basic principle."
"Makes sense." Luella commented, Charlie nodded.
Wonka presses a button, the chocolate bar levitates for a bit before flashing into a stream of light and disappearing into the air.
"It's gone!" Charlie exclaimed.
"Told you! Now the bar of chocolate is rushing over int int little pieces over to the television! Come on!" He leads them towards the television, and alas, the chocolate bar appears there. Wonka turns towards Mike. "Go on. . eat it."
"It's just a picture." Mike said lowly, Wonka rolled his eyes and turned towards Charlie.
"You eat it then. Just reach out and grab it!" He grins.
Charlie was a little hesitant at first, but Luella encouraged him to take the chocolate bar. Reluctantly, Charlie grabbed the chocolate bar from the screen and pulled it out. It was real chocolate. . so far.
"Eat it! It'll be delicious! It's the same bar, just a little smaller." Wonka reassured him, keeping the grin on his face.
Charlie opens up the chocolate bar and takes a bite out of it. "It's great!" Charlie offers Luella a piece and she hungrily takes a small piece off of the bar of chocolate.
"So imagine. You're sitting at home, watching television, and a commercial will come on. Then a voice will say: "Wonka's chocolates are the best in the world, if you don't believe us, try one yourself." And then you just simply reach out and take one! How about that?" Wonka beamed, putting his hands on his hips.
"So could you send other things like. . breakfast cereals?" Mr. Teevee asked, Wonka made a look of disgust.
"Do you have any idea what breakfast cereal is made out of? It's those curly little wood things you would find in pencil sharpeners." He shuddered.
"But could you send it by television if you want to?" Charlie asked.
"Course I could." Wonka replied.
"Could you send a person?" Mike rose an eyebrow.
"Why would you want to send a person? They don't taste good at all!" Wonka tried to convince him, but Mike wasn't having it.
"Don't you realise what you've just invented?! It's a teleporter! It's the most important invention in the history of the world and all you think about is chocolate!" Mike snapped at him, Mr. Teevee put a hand on Mike's shoulder.
"Calm down, Mike. I think Mr. Wonka knows what he's talking about."
"No! He doesn't! He doesn't have any idea!" Mike scowled, "You think he's a genius, but he's an idiot! But I'm not!"
Luella looked at at Wonka, who said nothing in return. He wasn't even defending himself. Suddenly, the boy started to run towards the button.
"Hey, little boy- don't push my button!" He demanded, but Mike pushed it anyway and jumped up onto the platform. He levitated for a few seconds, but quickly disappeared soon after in a flash of light.
"He's gone!" Mr. Teevee exclaimed with concern.
"Let's go back to the television and see what we get." Wonka said, almost exhaustedly. "I sure hope no part of him gets left behind. . "
"What do you mean 'left behind'?" Mr. Teevee asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Sometimes not all pieces make it through to the television."
After a while, Wonka turns towards the Oompa Loompa controlling the television. "Go through all the channels, I'm starting to get a little anxious."
Once again, a song starts up by the Oompa Loompas. After the song, Mike calls out. "Somebody help
me!"
"Someone grab him." Wonka said quietly, Mr. Teevee reaches out and grabs him by the shirt. Mike is now only 6 inches tall.
"He should probably go to the taffy puller!" Wonka explained, smiling widely.
"Taffy puller?!"
"Hey, that was my idea." Wonka sighed, "Boy, is he going to be skinny." He calls over another Oompa Loompa, and tells it to take them to the taffy puller room. The Oompa Loompa bows towards him, Wonka does the same before the Oompa Loompa takes both Mr. Teevee and Mike Teevee away.
"On with the tour? There's so much more to see! How many children are there left?" He looks at both Charlie and Luella, who are both grinned, despite what happened. "Just you two?"
They nodded, "He's the only child left." Luella confirmed.
"That means you've won!" Wonka grabbed Charlie's hand and started to shake it vigorously. "Oh I do congratulate you! I really do! I am absolutely delighted! I knew it would be you right from the beginning! Now we mustn't dilly or dally, because we have an enormous number of things to do before the day's out. But luckily for us we have the Great Glass Elevator to--"
He let go of Charlie's had and ran towards the Elevator. He bumped into the glass and fell backwards. Luella put her hand over her mouth to keep herself from laughing, but she couldn't help it. Her giggles came out one by one. When Wonka say up, he didn't realise that a red pigment rose up onto his cheeks. "--Speed things along."
"Oh my god. . are you okay?!" She cackled as Wonka stood up and dusted himself off.
"I'm fine." He confirms, and leads them into the elevator. "Lets go."
