Chapter 9

"Stop snoring," Caleb whined.

My eyes fluttered open at the sound of his voice. I looked over and saw Caleb slowly starting to sit up straight, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"You stop moving," Bradley huffed. His arms were still wrapped around my waist and his head was buried into my chest.

Caleb started to move around more and I spoke up, "What are you doing?"

The younger Baker sibling didn't answer me as he looked around the car. His face showed confusion as he gave his brother a shove, "Brad."

"Will you quit it," Bradley barked, giving Caleb a shove in return. However my boyfriend's brother didn't say anything, but from the look on his face I knew something was wrong.

"What?" I questioned. Caleb simply looked to the front of the car, not saying a word.

Bradley then let go of me and sat up straight himself. "What?" He repeated my question.

I looked in the driver's seat and saw that Elliot was no where to be found. "Where did he go, Bradley?" I asked confused.

Bradley gave me a shrug and tried to turn the car on, "I'm so cold."

I saw that Caleb was shivering, so I climbed over and wrapped my blanket around him. My boyfriend's brother gave me a small, thankful smile.

"Oh, shit, come on, please," Bradley pleaded, turning the ignition. The car didn't start and after a few tries Bradley eventually gave up, sitting back and staring at his brother and I.

"What's wrong?" Caleb asked, concern laced in his voice.

I shook my head, "It's not turning on."

Caleb looked back and forth between Bradley and I, fear was in his eyes and I couldn't help but feel afraid as well. "He just went to go get help, right?" Caleb questioned.

"I don't know maybe," Bradley answered.

I opened my mouth to comfort Caleb, but I was cut off by banging coming from the trunk door. All three of us let out yells and Bradley protectively pulled me by his side.

The trunk door opened and revealed none other than their father. He had a stupid smile on his face and was chuckling to himself. "Oh funny," I scoffed with an eye roll.

"Who'd you think it was?" Elliot laughed.

"Bradley thought you were Bigfoot," Caleb laughed, now at ease that his father was back.

I, however, was on edge. Something seemed odd about Elliot now, but I couldn't quite place it. Maybe it was just me overreacting.

Bradley climbed out of the car with a scowl on his face, "Where have you been?"

I hopped out of the trunk as well; Bradley helped me out and quickly pulled me close. "I went for a hike to scout things out," Elliot answered.

"Did you find help?" I asked slightly annoyed, along with my teeth chattering.

"No, but a couple of years ago, we were set up on the other side of this valley. And we went hunting one weekend and there's a cabin down there. I think that's our best bet, so grab your stuff," Elliot responded while reaching into the back of the car.

Bradley crossed his arms, "How is that our best bet? We've got to go back to the highway and find help from there."

Elliot shook his head, "No, No. Hey grab the stuff out of there. Now we're to far from the road. We can't be out in the cold for that long, and this truck isn't gonna keep us warm."

Bradley rolled his eyes and looked away from his father. "What about food? I'm starving," Caleb whined.

"Yeah we'll find something there.  Just grab what you, need essentials only. We gotta keep it light; it's gonna be slow going in the snow," Elliot stated while grabbing a red backpack, along with the rifle.

I gave out a huff and stared at the man in front of me, "Yeah, but how are we gonna find this place?"

Caleb climbed out of the car, chewing God knows what. Elliot was smiling at me and closed the trunk door, "Well where's your sense of adventure?"

I gave Elliot a bewildered look and didn't bother to answer him. He gave mw a stare but eventually spoke, "Lets go."

Caleb and his father took off walking and I looked back at my boyfriend. "This is bullshit," Bradley muttered while taking my hand and dragging me along.

"What?" I asked as I looked at Elliot stopping.  He was staring up at the trees like an idiot.  I knew exactly what he was doing and their was no point in stopping when you could simply look up while walking.

"This way," my boyfriend's father simply answered, pointing his finger south.

"How do you know?" Bradley scoffed.

Elliot stopped in his tracks and pointed upwards, "See these branches? They're bigger on this side. They get more sun, less stress from the North wind."

Both the Baker brothers gave confused looks so I filled in the blanks, "It means they're pointing south."

Elliot gave me a look of shock and Bradley gave me a small smirk.  "Come on," his dad eventually said.

We all started to walk again.  It was silent for a few minutes and then Caleb spoke up, "How much further is it?"

No response came.  After a few seconds Caleb called out again, "Dad?"

Again the younger Baker was met with silence.  This made Bradley finally speak up, "Hey, should we really keep going if we're not sure where we're headed?"

"You got a better idea," Elliot snapped, turning around to face us.

"Yeah, you shutting the fuck up," I muttered underneath my breath.

Elliot didn't seem to hear it so he kept on walking, "This is the right way; I know I'm right, come on."

We walked for what seemed like hours.  We were all shivering and pale.  I was sick and tired of the cold and I was also tired of Elliot's bullshit.  We were now walking across a frozen lake, even after I had stated it wasn't a great idea. But apparently Elliot knows best.

Bradley and I had even heard noises coming from the trees, but Elliot brushed it off like it was nothing.  It all honesty I was starting to get skeptical of what Elliot's true intentions were.

Caleb let out a yell like huff. "I know try not to think about it," Elliot responded.

Their dad then stopped dead in his tracks and smiled.  I looked ahead and saw a cabin just under a mile away.  Relief flooded through my body.

"Finally! Yes!" Caleb cheered, jumping around on the ice.  Elliot turned around and faced Bradley, "Told Ya!"

Elliot and Caleb took off towards the cabin and I started to walk along side Bradley.  He walked a few feet and then the ice gave away a little.

"You good?" I questioned, looking down at his wet shoes.

Bradley let out a huff and nodded his head.  I gave a small smile and started to walk more, but I only got a few feet.

I heard ice start to crack, and as soon as I turned around, fear flooded through my veins as I watched the boy I love fall into the cold, frozen lake water.
